Exactly, we need people like them who are fearless. We cannot always keep our opinions to ourselves just cuz we’re afraid that it may offend others. EVERY opinion will offend at least a few people. That’s inevitable.
LOL, they're utter hypocrites. Ben & Karen keep acting holier-than-thou, attacking chesscom for being a for-profit (oh no, how awful! 🤣) business, but then give no good reason for their association with chesscom. They admit their morals aren't so high and mighty because it benefits them, so they retain the association.
And then they attack Danny Rensch for the silliest of reasons. If you turn down a commentating gig when chesscom need you, then Rensch/chesscom are perfectly entitled to say they might not be inclined to hire you for commentary again in the future. But they're bitter about not getting the chesscom commentary cash (that they were denouncing a couple of mins before).
I like Ben and Karen, and I like watching their streams, but speaking truth to power is one of the few things they don’t do

I like when Karen tells Ben to let her talk and he is like you’re right (facial expressions) and he is quite for 30 seconds then gets all riled up again. They have a great relationship.

I would absolutely love official matches commented by Ben & Karen but with ONE condition: they're allowed to be funny! I understand that world championships and such are taken seriously but i think that a more entertaining presentation of such events wouldn't hurt! Simon Williams brought a bit of that in some recent events, but let's face it, it's still content for a bunch of "too serious" viewers!

Most people watching chess content are new to chess. I started playing again after the 2018 world championship. Many others started during the Covid chess boom, but these guys have been around a long time and have known each other for a long time. Ben has known Hikaru since he was about 10 years old, maybe earlier. He beat Fabi when Fabi was 11. People know each other and some of them have beef. A lot of people don't like Hikaru, not necessarily for what he does now, but how he acted 10-15 years ago and they're disinclined to give him the benefit of the doubt about stuff now. IM Lawrence Trent and Nepo have had beef and I'm not sure Nepo has forgiven him yet
It seems that the competitive chess world is small enough that people who actually played consistently at a relatively high level from childhood all at least know of each other.
Go ben! It's ridiculous behaviour from the company that should promote chess. Go lichess!

Great thing about the modern age is you can expose the mistreatment you were handed in the past. Rip those guys a new one!
Furthermore, it is absurd how many brainless actually think that Chesscom prohibited Hans from future event because of cheating. Which has nothing to do with the reason. The only reason Chesscom banned Hans is because Magnus is giving an ultimatum. Either ban Hans or he will not play. And Chesscom chooses to keep their much more lucrative business partner in. Without any regard to Hans or his life/career. This is the reason why anybody working for or with organizers are prohibited in participating in the competitions. If Magnus is affiliated with Chesscom, then he should be prohibited from competing in their events. The fact that Magnus is able to compete is exactly why all of this is happening. Or is anybody unclear about the absolute fact that the only reason Chesscom prohibited Hans has nothing whatsoever to do with cheating or Hans past. It is only because of Magnus.

chess.com is very buggy. I joined for one month and did all the beginner to intermediate lessons and all the review questions / puzzles. Pieces are often displayed incorrectly: pawn replaced with another piece, sometimes had two kings of the same colour on the board, sometimes no king (because it was displayed as a different piece); interactions were also buggy with positions changing erratically. Not all the time but often enough here and there on random pages. This was only a year or so ago. Lichess is rock solid by comparison.

holy moly this anecdote, in the hands on Hans's legal team, would really just... destroy Danny's credibility and paint him as the vindictive type willing to destroy peoples' careers should they step out of line.
I think it's totally overblown. People come off more aggressive sometimes. Sometimes people overreact.
Pretty much every noteworthy GM or chess commentator is probably going to end up being called to testify if this actually goes to court. Ben may get the chance to re-tell this story under oath, in a setting where everyone's dirty laundry is being aired. Should be interesting. I suspect this gets settled, but really, really, really hope it goes to trial. I want the facts to come out and justice to be done. If Magnus was wrong an apology and retraction are the very least of what Hans is owed, although if it turns out that Hans is a serial cheater who happened to not be cheating at that exact moment I will be considerably less outraged on his behalf. The problem with getting a reputation as a liar is that no one believes you when you are telling the truth, and likewise, when people assume you are cheating they will still think you are cheating long after you stop. If real GMs had reason to believe Hans was cheating, if his cheating was an open secret as some have claimed, those GMs will be called to testify under oath. I'll bring the beer if you bring the pretzels! :D

Not' trying to start a "best chess site" war here or anything because in the end, chess is chess, lol! I think you guys have way better reasons to move to Lichess than I as you got way deeper into their ecosystem than I have and experienced all these gripes. But I'd like to share why I moved to Lichess from Green Pawn (Can't' write their name as it'll likely show as a link and UA-cam will auto-mark my comment) anyway.
Initially I started on Green Pawn and it seemed fine. Until I started getting into the other features. So many teaching things had a paywall (which was hypocritical to their message of teaching everyone because it lowered accessibility) and it became quite a nuisance. So I eventually found Lichess which had a load of stuff free and open for anyone to look at and contribute to. I started to be there more and more for stuff like the puzzles and studies. But still sort of didn't know if I should give up on Green Pawn. Like that I was being too harsh on it or something. That is until they did shady stuff like the NFTs and "verified accounts" to get more money for essentially providing what amounts to nothing. It was then I completely went over to Lichess. Don't get me wrong and think I just hate for-profit things here or something. Normally I don't mind money making because people have gotta make a living. But why do shady stuff like that when there are a million other ways to make money, you know?
The more time I spent on Lichess, the more I also picked up on how smooth everything ran. It compensates for lag so you aren't losing clock time, navigating is more efficient, none of said paywall hindrances as stated of course, etc... You've been there so you guys know all of it. But on top of that, it's clear they have their priorities straight. They promise free everything plus continued improvements and they indeed deliver. I've seen people say it's still technically not free because it needs donations. But when something is as good as Lichess, people will want to donate to support it because it's valued. It happens all the time with indie games which have "pay what you want" for instance in that the good ones get donations for continued development and just thanks for a job well done.
Green Pawn does have a lot more variants though. So I guess if I wanted to get into them, I'd have to go back and use it as some only exist there that I know of. The most famous example recently is Duck Chess of course. Lichess apparently is not interested in adding more variants at the moment either.
Ben and Karen are the best human beings in the chess world.

4:20 It's bottle top discipline. So one gets into the habit of not leaving open containers near expensive electronic equipment. You never know when you might forget about it, so it's better to keep it closed whenever you're not drinking. Predicting when your next sip will be can be hard at times when busy talking.

I clicked on this hoping for something coherent and substantive. I've unsubbed but am still watching periodically because it's such a puzzle to me that an actual real life GM is much more tolerant of cheating than I ever imagined one would be - I keep thinking I must be missing something obvious. (For context, I've been holding chess players up to NHL fans as models of what it looks like when people actually follow the rules of their sport for years, I've had to re-evaluate how I perceive chess). This beef is like celebrity beef in that it's really petty and spiteful and about nothing. FWIW I don't doubt your claims, I just think they are very unremarkable. Someone was rude in an email to you, then they apologized. You felt threatened, so you confronted the person and they backed down. You didn't get offered a business opportunity you felt you deserved. I don't mean this disrespectfully, but you should try having a job sometime, that is what working people call "a day at the office." Watching someone badmouth... what, their business partner? Their employer?... while they are (presumably) on the job is a bit much, but claiming that they are somehow being forced to work for this particular boss and if they had a choice they would do something else is something else. I dunno, I know what it's like to work for an employer you dislike, and if you're genuinely stuck there I sympathize, but this came across as shallow and unprofessional IMO.

When people (Danny Renschchsh; also, if you can call them people) have power, they will use that power to their liking, not to do what's right.
Hans shouldn't have been humiliated publicly for something that happened when he was a juvenile. Was totally overboard. Although his lawsuit is the worst written legal document I've ever read. It's like he wrote it himself instead of using a solid attorney.
He is a juvenile, if we waited to humiliate him until he was an adult it would have taken several more decades

Well, it actually was a special treatment. Unlike most of the other titled players that were caught cheating once or twice, Hans was cheating for years in more than 100 of games that we know of. He is also a publicly admitted cheater who outright lied in his post-game interview and tried to downplay his cheating and make Chess com and othe people look bad, pretending like he has no idea why he's banned and to look like they targeted him just to ruin his career, while the poor innocent him was just working hard and living out of a suitcase and certainly not cheating for years in titled games both for money and rating like that "bad, bad Chess com" implied.
I'm sick of the people who are trying to paint him like some innocent victim just so they can pretend that they are occupying some imaginary moral high ground above the rest of us mortals. Oh, they're defending this poor innocent kid from the vile attacks on his pristine career and personality, give me a break please.
Danny has always given me weird vibes when I see him commentating or when I read his announcements etc. Nice to see my intuition was right..

There's not really any reason to call Ben as a witness. All he would be able to say as an expert is that there wasn't anything suspicious about Hans's moves in the Sinquefield Cup. Anything else would be speculation on his part and wouldn't be allowed. There's any number of qualified GMs or IMs that can give the exact same testimony.
Kissing anyone's ass is not a good look, no matter how good looking Magnus Carlsen might be considered to be.

Anoint all potential entrances to your home. To anoint the sick, place oil on tip of finger and touch it to the head of the sick and say a prayer of healing over them in Jesus name.
