Sorry for necroposting, likely that HST was cold starting, which for a Diesel engine without glowplugs means repeatedly cranking the engine over until the compression generates enough heat to begin combusting the diesel fuel via compression ignition. However while cranking over diesel is still being injected into the cylinders, and because it’s too cold, not being combusted and therefore being exhausted as white smoke, but it’s still diesel and therefore flammable. Once the engine does finally start up and the engine starts going bang, the now hot exhaust can sometimes cause the lingering atomised diesel around the exhaust and in the exhaust system to combust, and cause flames to shoot out. It’s either that, or a diesel runaway, when there’s a leak somewhere and oil or diesel gets into the cylinders outside of the controlled means IE via the injectors, and gets used as fuel by the engine, as this is uncontrolled by the throttle, it causes the engine to essentially run away uncontrollably and, if nothing is done such as by blocking the air intake, can cause the engine to tear itself to pieces. One of the visible symptoms of such an infliction is flames coming out the exhaust. However, context clues to the pic to me suggests it’s just a cold starting HST
I never find these funny as lots of people are killed or very seriously injured due to these accidents, though luckily some are empty when the accident occurs or the driver gets a minor injury like a broken toe or a massive bruise up their leg. I still don’t find them funny even if they were one of these. Always remember someone could/could have died.
