  • In this insightful talk, sociologist Julie Hogan demonstrates the concept of cultural humility. She explores how differently Americans respond to her when wearing two traditional robes: Muslim burka and academic regalia. Dr. Hogan deep dives into cultural competence, deconstructs the prevailing paradigm, and offers cultural humility as a richer more meaningful way to understand not only the culture of others, but American culture as well. Dr. Julie A. Hogan is an associate professor at the University of Nevada Reno’s College of Business. Hogan earned her doctoral degree at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in Sociology. She earned her master’s degree at the University of California Chico when Pioneer Days (a university sanctioned week long alcohol and drug party) was broadcast on MTV. She has spent 30 years in the substance abuse prevention field, has amassed a whopping 38 million dollars in grants and contracts, and has three textbook publications.
For 30 years, Hogan has been deeply engaged in the topic of culture. Over the past ten years, she has been embracing diversity through the framework of cultural humility. In August of 2015 she met a student who changed her life. After experiencing some socially rich observations in the classroom, Hogan accepted a gift that changed the way she views American culture and herself. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

You reminded me of an in incident fresh out of college at work about 45 minutes away from my highly Muslim populated home. I have a had scarf on and not burka, face exposed and western clothing, only my hair covered, normal hijab. Went out normal in my hometown. So at work during lunch my “American coworkers” and I decided decided to go to a local restaurant for lunch. As we walked in to a full restaurant, everyone became silent and all heads turned and looked at me. All I could say is “all eyes on me.” I just smiled, waved, and walked along to our tables. Had a great lunch with smiles and laughs. We Muslim women are not oppressed. We are highly educated, confident, respectable women. We go to college if we choose, we choose our careers and lol our own choices in life. You have the freedom to wear as little as you want, I have the freedom to wear as much as I want.

Yes ,you are free but in west and by rulls of demokrati and human rights in west not by islamic rulls, you can divorce, keep your child, choose your clothing....and many otherthings which is a dream for many women in most muslim countries. Wearing a Hija is 100% depended on who rulls in middeleast or muslim countries, scince late 80 and 90,s more country are rulld by muslim leader and since then you see more and more women wearing hijab, which it was quit different in 50s,60,s and 70s no women had hijab, so it is quit obvious that it is highly effekted by aeras political map.... of course in many countrys now in last few decades it has not been achoice but a force and all system and edjucation is on their hand. The effect of this few decades show itselfe in a very wide brainwash all over women who claim " hijab is our identy!!!!!"without knowing any thing about history and rulls of those country and women rolls in history.....Hijab is higly dicided by who rulls in middeleast.
By your hijab in west you support more and more your systers unfair and unjustice situation in the east muslim countries.
If you are educated learn som history and political hisorty ......

In the west the face is critical. You turn and look at the face, eyes, and facial expression when talking to someone. If someone is hiding their face it comes off as unpleasant and uninviting and gives off the subconscious vibe that you aren't interested in having a conversation. This doesn't just go for an islamic veil this goes for anytime you're hiding your face from someone.

So just because you feel uncomfortable while talking to that person in that small moment, she must take such a drastic step as removing it entirely? Don't you think that's extremely selfish? How about you just get used to it? The niqab is worn in several countries and regions but no one minds, everyone's used to it. It's almost as if you haven't watched the tedtalk at all. Thank you, Professor Hogan for the open invitation to approach Muslim Women with curious inquisitive openness and not be fearful that their families will not disown or hurt them.
I appreciate the naive willingness you hold for accepting the public clothing imprisonment demonstrated by individuals who openly show they are not interested in me, myself, I.
To cover yourself entirely is a statement of isolation and obedience to patriarchal cultures (cultures in which men dress as they please).
I remember trying to ask a Samalia Women about her coverings. She glared at me and walked 5 steps away and faced the opposite direction. I generally give compliments to women and men, who have made an effort to look exceptional and stand out.
I have been taught and encouraged to treat Muslim Women as Muslim Men/Boys do, invisible. They are like trees standing in the modernness of our current time, as background white noise.
Please Muslim Men - grow up, become human beings. We are all connected. :)

It’s part of the reason why some people don’t trust being to next to someone dressed from head to toe. It can be hard to trust people, much more when you don’t have a face to kind of inspect its expressions, genuineness and probable intentions.

Why? Aren't you able to tune in and connect through the many other cues you get when engaging someone, e.g. tone of voice, pace and pitch of speech, posture, gesticulation...? It's both lazy and arrogant to want others to adjust how they present themselves in a way that's convenient for you and makes you more comfortable, whereas you aren't prepared to try connecting in a deeper way than "reading" facial expressions. Besides which, it's entirely possible to completely misread facial expressions, esp when interacting with a culture you are unfamiliar.

of course, the difference between the Arabic robes and the academic robes are obvious. One robe is common traditional robes for Muslim conservative women since ancient times to this day. The other robe is not usual but exclusive to these days. You can not blame some people who are not well learned about the traditional Muslim women robes because they associated it with some gruesome incidents involving terrorism, fiction or not, where a woman terrorist wear a hijab o burka.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Book 74, Hadith Number 257.
Narrated By ‘Aisha: (The wife of the Prophet) ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab used to say to Allah’s Apostle “Let your wives be veiled” But he did not do so. The wives of the Prophet used to go out to answer the call of nature at night only at Al-Manasi.’ Once Sauda, the daughter of Zam’a went out and she was a tall woman. ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab saw her while he was in a gathering, and said, “I have recognized you, O Sauda!” He (‘Umar) said so as he was anxious for some Divine orders regarding the veil (the veiling of women.) So Allah revealed the Verse of veiling. (Al-Hijab; a complete body cover excluding the eyes). (See Hadith No. 148, Vol. 1)
