I played golf for twenty years and read dozens of instructional books and not one of them mentioned “side bend” which is the curving of the lower lumbar vertebrae which is essential in the downswing and done without any conscious thought when doing other things like tossing a ball down side-arm down the target line from a golf address posture. What appears to be the trail arm just dropping to the side in the downswing is actually the result of side bend action.
Once I became aware of side bend I started screen capturing swing videos of pro then playing them back frame-by-frame and then tried to move the same way. I discovered that what a slight bit of side bend can do is reverse the direction of the club head while the shoulders are still moving around hips in the backswing and that side bend can do that regardless of the length of the swing arc.
In a full swing to the top reversing the direction with a bit of side bent causes the kinetic energy in the club head which had been pulling the shoulders around hips to instead bend and load the shaft and creates more radial deviation in the wrists. But once loaded that bend only stays in the shaft as long as the hands pull down against the INERTIA of the club head after it has been stopped and reversed with the initial side bend action.
The way to keep the hands pulling against the inertia of the club head mass isn’t to just turn hips and shoulders-which turns both hands and club head at the same rate-but to also GRADUALLY increase the amount of side bending of the lumbar spine, something which is seen it this video and in the swings of all good ball strikers.
A variable affecting side-bend action is the proportions of the golfer: the ratio between length of legs and torso for people of the same height. People with long torsos and short legs can and do side bend differently than those with long legs and short torsos. It takes more side bending for a golfer with a long torso to get the elbow of the trail arm ideally tucked in to externally rotate the trail arm than a golfer with long legs and short torso or someone with ‘average’ leg/torso proportions.
Understanding the role of side bending and how to do it instantly eliminates a lot of common beginner swing problems. When helping a beginner learn how to swing the first thing I now do is statically pose them in the same side bent impact position good ball strikers are in at the instant the ball leaves the club face then have them go back to the address position, to the top of the back swing then back down to that side bent impact position SLOWLY 2 - 3 time then try to hit a ball placed 1/2” behind where their club has been hitting the ground. The difference in their swing and ball flight after that 5 minute drill is dramatic and always elicits the same reaction: “I had no idea a swing is supposed to work that way!”
The reason that drill works so well is that it gives the conscious brain a understanding of the goal at the same time it trains the reflexive brain in the technique necessary to achieve the goal. It’s not a method anyone trying to make a living giving golf lessons would use of course 😂

I like this but this move might be good for a senior back. I'm going to try it because I've never transferred weight good to front foot & this vid & Milo's vid on 'squeezing' really does that. I'll buy some aspirin jic.

    Also ,
If you didn’t turn your hips , you wouldn’t be able to move because you can’t get your swing started 😂
