What is your favourite focal length, one lens that you always come back to over and over again?
I can’t explain it but I’m hooked on my 85mm. It was love at first sight
I really like a 50mm, as it is the most similar to what we see.
I shoot depending on the situation and I'm in various situations all the time. I never had the 50mm f/1.4. I did think the 20mm G f/1.8 would be my versatile but it's too far most of the time and the 90mm G Macro is way too tight most of the time. I have a 24-240mm but it's f/3.5-6.3 so bokeh isn't so great and the sharpness isn't much there for things close-up.
@Eddy M I think that lens is the best for everyday too. I got one and the bokeh is great as well as the light transmission.
105 mm will be a good one for me.
50mm is my lens 80% of the time. I'm dreaming of this one on a Leica SL2.
But a 60 year-old guy like me can't afford such a combo (roughly 7000€).
So I bought a Fuji X-S10 + 35 f:2 for 20% of the price (and half of the weight).
When you don't have what you like, you must like what you have...
absolutely! I always say that you should make the most out of what you have!
You sold me, I just ordered one. I bought this lens many years ago (my first “real lens”) for portraiture to get more out of my entry level APS-C canon, then when I upgraded to full frame I gravitated toward 85mm+ and sold the lens. For the past five years or so I’ve just been using a little plastic 50mm for fun here and there but have been curious about what I might get from a nicer 50 now that my eyes are more able to recognize the improvement in image quality. Seeing your real world examples made this the best video I’ve seen on this lens. For weeks I’ve been looking at the test chart videos and still feeling unsure if I should get one. Is this really an old lens?
I have this lens for my Nikon D850.
As a professional photographer and film maker, this lens is amazing.
It’s so sharp and clear.
I used it on my BMPCC4k and Z Cam E2 via an adapter.
I love prime lenses. And this is the best I have ever used.

@@adrianmcastro the Nikon D850 is the best DSLR photo camera ever made. Photography wise, the quality is by far the best in the world. (For a DSLR).
The video is superb. The colours are very good and it’s easy to handle the footage.
The only issue is the auto focus for film, as it hunts sometimes. But I usually use manual any way.
But it’s very good. It makes an excellent camera. And I use a number for cinema cameras and broadcast cameras. The D850 is always best.

I've owned this lens for about 10 days now and it's probably my favourite lens I've owned to date. I've also owned the Canon RF 50mm F1.2.The quality of the images is amazing, especially paired up with my GFX 100s. I've also found that F4 seems to be a sweet spot of the lens, for amazing sharpness.

Would you say that someone who can't yet afford the Canon RF 50 1.2 would do "well" to pick up the Sigma? I think I know your answer, but would still love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!
Unfortunately I don't have any experience of Canon or Canon 50mm f1.2 but I have shot with pretty much anything else. The Sigma is not perfect but it is still an amazing lens for great price
what did u use to film this video? do you know how I can get this quality having a cannon 600 D and wanting to buy a sigma lens? do you know what sigma lens I should get to achieve this video quality you have here? :)
I film all my talks to the camera with Nikon Z6 and this Sigma 50mm f1.4 but as I am holding it in my hand in this video I must have used something else and i don't remember what it was now. It looks like 50mm so it might have been Sony 50mm f1.8 on Sony a7III.
You can get pretty good quality with Canon 600D - hard to advise on what lens is right for you. It all depends on your room, set-up and what exactly you want to shoot with it.

Love your channel! Just subscribed! Something like 24-70mm f2.8 would be the most versatile lens you could have. You'll get nice background blur more you zoom in.

Great video!! I just bought this used mint. I hear there is a new firmware for this lens when used on Z. I don’t have the adapter to update. Is there noticeable difference with the firmware update?
Not that I know of. I didn't update firmware and this lens performance very, very well on my Z6 - better than on my old D800 by mile

Hello, nice review. I have the Sony a7iii with the Sony 50mm 1.8. I shoot jewelry with it and also portrait and street. Do you consider that the Sigma would be worth an upgrade? Best
yes and no.
Sigma is much better quality optically, different class all together than the Sony 50mm f1.8 FE but it is very big and very heavy in comparison.
If you are happy with your Sony, don't change it, if you need an upgrade check out some other 50s for Sony E (I have reviewed foe of them!).
I do love this lens a lot but the newer version designed for mirrorless cameras hopefully is coming soon.

I am going to get it for my D7500! Should give me 75mm on APS-C, was looking for 85mm bright lens but damn, Nikkor DX 85mm 3.5 isn't bright and Nikkor FX 58mm 1.4 is spot on but price wise is almost double of this Sigma.

no, it's not better when it comes to video. You have to use FTZ adapter with it and that is noisy when autofocusing in video

I still use it with Nikon Z6, so yes it should work

This one is much cheaper but like all Nikon F lenses used via FTZ it does make crunching sound when auto focusing when filming on Z6 and Z7 cameras
@@PavSZ Were you thinking of the 1.2 or has there been a major price change? The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S is USD 500 / GBP 509 which is substantially (US) / somewhat (UK) less than the Sigma.

I'd check if this lens is compatible with D3500. Even if it works ok, it will be close to 80mm on DX sensor

it's ok - it's not really a close-up lens. I use it for all my commercial food photography - this close 😉
Would this lense perform well on the Lumix S5?
It will but it is an older HSM lens designed for DSLR cameras. There might be a new DG DN version for mirrorless cameras coming soon, I hope so anyway.

it's not worse than 99% of other lenses. I have never used 40mm so I can't compare, sorry
@@PavSZ Thanks, just ordered one. I'm not a fan of the more photocentric art lenses such as the 35mm, but my favorite is the 40 and 28 which were designed for the ff cine prime line up, then Sigma made a photo version of both. Their breathings are minimum, and they resolve the images like no other on the market. The 50 is one of the oldest prime in the art line, so I doubt it is as good as the 40mm but I'll have to take your word and test it out.
Hi, I just got this lens for FE, and the af and mf are so loud! AF makes normal sound of motors working, but it also have this high squicky noise (same with mf). Is it normal?
it is loud when focusing but squicky is not normal
Does this lens have any significant breathing when focusing?
Not that I have ever noticed. 90% of all my b-roll on all my videos is filmed with this lens, manually focusing.
I shoot canon and from what ive seen the image quality is far better then the 1.2 L. What sucks is that the sigma isnt weather sealed.

no, you have to change the aperture value (open the aperture) to get the shallow depth of filed effect

there is only one Sigma f1.4.
Anyway, only you can decide which lens is right for you and for what you shoot (and for which camera)

is there a big difference with a 50mm f.8? I mean 1.4/1.8 isnt a huge difference. Perhaps the whole lense is sharper etc
very small difference in amount of subject to background separation. The biggest difference usually is in build quality, optical performance, quality of bokeh etc.
Of course it depends which f1.8 lens you compare this to too.

This is my favourite lens out of all of the lenses that I own. But it’s not a nifty one. It’s large, heavy and expensive.
it is my favourite too but I was told that "nifty fifty" could also define the type of the lens (50mm)... not just it's size - but yeah - it's not small or light haha

I think the word ”nifty” is used for how small and cheap some 50mm are. It isn’t used simply because it rhymes with fifty.

Truly Pav. I bought a Sony after using Canon for years. Got a MC-11 adapter for about $100 USD on Facebook Marketplace and I have loved this lens even on my Sony. Yeah the newer versions are better but this lens is so good optically I do not feel like switching unless I get say a Sony 50mm f1.2 GM.
still great lens and I still use it now and then on Nikon cameras but I have 50mm f1.2 GM and it is worth every bit of its very hefty price tag
Sigma QC is very bad. It is a lotery if you get a good lens your lucky. Tokina 50mm 1.4 opera is superior to the sigma. Bokeh and rendering of the tokina is beautifull.
I don't know what Sigma lenses you have used but I have reviewed a lot of them in last year or so, I actually own few myself as well and I never thought that I need to be lucky to get results out of them - new DG DN lenses for mirrorless cameras are easily on par with Sony GM lenses.
Tokina lenses are good but the new decision to just simply use Viltrox lenses and block the USB socket on them put me off Tokina
@@PavSZ if you look with a flash in the art 50mm 1.4 in an angle of 30 degrees or less than you can see there are bad polish marks on the second element. I had 12 50mm 1.4 art and only 1 of them didnt have bad polish marks on the element beneath the front glass. On almost all of the 12 lenses there where marks in the coating front and rear. In 2 there where airbubbles in the front element. Also AF is very poor out of the 12 i had 5 lenses that needed minor adjustment with the dock or mfa in camera. The other 7 where all over the place and calibrating didnt help in these 7. Also noticed that i only had 3 lenses out of the 12 that where extremely sharp when focus was spot on. 4 lenses that where good and 5 lenses that where not as near the same sharpness of the good ones. Also aperture blades i had 4 lenses that where 0 shaped instead of o when stopped down. Those with bad aperture blades who are not aligned properly will malfunction in time. It looks nice the art lenses but i think its inferior quality for the price. This was all last month that i had 12 lenses of the 50mm 1.4 art. Maybe sigma has gotten worse with QC i dont know but what i do know is no more sigma for me. Forgot to say i also had 2 lenses with residue inside the lens and 2 lenses with large dust particles inside. 🤷🏻♂️

I had never one issue with this 50mm, neither with any other Sigma lens that I have bough or have been lent to me from Sigma.
@@PavSZ I have to say, I tried two Sigma 50mm Art lenses and one had an air bubble in the front element, and the other had backfocusing issues. The image quality of the first was great, but I haf never seen an air bubble in a lens until then.
But I also have a 18-35 and 24-105 and they are flawless.
You seem like a nice guy but your'e really missing the point when you call this lens a nifty fifty. 1.8's are the nifty fifties.
nifty means small or fast ..... not necessarily f1.8 either
@@PavSZ in the 50mm world, nifty stands for light, affordable and all-round effective. The art lens is a specialized piece of kit. Not a “everyone should have this in their bag” lens.
