4:19 That's the entire point of the movie though. Buzz is so occupied with trying to correct his mistake that he becomes blinded to the fact that things turned out mostly ok for everyone in spite of it. He's so determined to change the past, that he completely misses out on the present, and that's why future Buzz is only interested in traveling back in time and undoing his mistake, and isn't interested in present Buzz's concerns about all the things that will be erased if he does so. That's effectively the turning point of the movie for present Buzz, and the point that he realises his real mistake was being so obsessed with what he views as his big mistake.

I forgot the names of the two side characters and I understood the importance of what happened but it felt like the movie didn’t let it sink in enough. Like the trauma of having your close partner grow older and die while you only just spent a few days is very serious but the movie just moved to fast to really see how he feels.

It gives me a feel like the Buzz from Toy Story is Christopher Reeve's Superman, while this Buzz is Henry Cavill's Superman. It's not that the idea is bad per se, but the differences in tone are so stark it becomes quite off putting at first. If only this movie had a better script I could totally see it become something of a sleeper hit later on as people got more used to a different, less comedic take on Buzz. Though, imho, Lightyear's take on Zurg is so bad and dumb I really can't see that happening.

The funny thing is that Turning Red WAS supposed to be in theaters but Disney just said "eehhhhh throw it on to Disney+ instead". I mean, I'm fine with that, but I really, REALLY wanted to have a reason to see a movie on the big screen again bc I actually worked at a movie theater and I just kept seeing that poster every day and I kept saying 'funny red panda' because it looked really interesting to me.
I haven't watched Lightyear yet, but I feel like I don't really have a push to see it. It's also strange that pretty much all the ads I was spammed with about the movie had Buzz lamenting on the fact that they're all stranded on "this planet" because of him, but to hear that all the people that were on the planet weren't really affected just kinda soured my expectations because THAT WAS THE ONLY DAMN THING I HEARD OUT OF BUZZ'S MOUTH FOR THE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF ADS I WAS SPAMMED WITH ON UA-cam.
I feel like for this to be a more compelling movie, Zurg should've had a bigger focus and honestly one idea I had for maybe giving everyone a reason to be angry at Buzz for stranding them on "this planet" is what if Buzz was pursuing Zurg for a personal stake and he took a big risk to take him down by jeopardizing his crew. That would certainly make the dynamic a little more fleshed out as now his crew has mistrust for Buzz and doubts if he's able to fix everything. You could even leave Buzz's reason for trying to go after Zurg as a bit of a secret so it makes his inner struggle more interesting to watch as you wonder why he has this motivation and why he was willing to even let his crew potentially die for his own personal gain.
I don't know. Maybe the scenario I just gave entirely wrecked Buzz's character, so I'm not sure if it should be a thing or not. Take my opinions with a huge handful of salt because I haven't seen it.

The brilliance of Zurg in TS2 is that you know he’s not an actual threat. But he’s designed so well, the lighting is so great, and he’s played up so well that you actually gasp when he arrives in the elevator. You could put Duel of the Fates there and it’d be even better.

@@getfricked6977 agreed!!! Like the main plot is going into maximum overdrive because of the dramatic reveal of Prospector, Woody finally coming to terms with everything after his great argument with Buzz, and the ticking clock of Al heading for the airport.
And none of the characters even knew he was coming! Only Utility Buzz and Rex took him seriously as a threat, the former because he’s still deluded and the latter because he’s Rex. The others seem to realize this Zurg isn’t really a threat and carry on with the mission, but it’s played so well for Utility Buzz and Rex that you feel it’s real. And even if he’s not a direct threat to the group as a whole, he’s still an obstacle that could jeopardize rescuing Woody.
But it’s still so freaking cool. You can hear the “KORRRAAAAAAAA” the moment his elevator arrives on their level.

the movie feels like the cinematic reboot of the Saturday morning cartoon Andy watched as a kid. A movie reboot that college-age Andy showed up for the midnight premier to watch and left feeling unsatisfied, and then had to ask 'was the movie BAD, or am I just not the target audience, anymore?' Which, naturally just leads him to re-watch the cartoon to see if it's as good as he remembers it.
Since the Toy Story franchise has largely been about themes of nostalgia and the ways we relate to our childhood via the toys in our lives, and the worth we place on these nostalgic objects, I think it would have been more interesting to make a movie with parallel stories: Andy revisiting the TV show of his childhood, and Buzz Lightyear's evolution through media and time.

I was COMPLETELY expecting this to be Pixar's most ambitious project yet. Normally whenever they start something, they research their inspiration HEAVILY so they know what they're doing. I thought this would've been an extremely interesting process because they would not only have to research Buzz Lightyear as a character that THEY created, but then dig even deeper and discover that inspiration that created the Buzz character. Basically, I was expecting this to culminate in what most people were expecting: A huge, well-written 90s sci-fi parody that goes well with the caricature that we see in the Toy Story movies.
But... no. I didn't feel like this was the same Buzz Lightyear that the toy was based off of. To be honest, there were some things that I liked from this movie. But in terms of living up to the legacy of Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger of Star Command... it didn't really do that.

I think the idea was to make it like a live action sci fi from something like Universal, rather than a traditional Pixar film, and I don't think the toy is based on the movie, but the spin off cartoon series loosely inspired by the movie (along those lines).
Or maybe it is a live action adaptation of a video game? We know a Buzz Lightyear video game exists in the toy story universe, what if the movie and the cartoon are both based on that? Like with Sonic the Hedgehog.

    My Problems With Lightyear:
    1. For the most part all of the characters were weak and annoying (mainly looking at you “pen guy” and old lady). The Only character that I liked was Sox but let’s be honest he was made to sell toys and is used as a get out jail free card for numerous times in the plot that it becomes laughable
    2. Weak story for a Pixar movie. I found myself checking my watch throughout the second half of the move waiting for it to end. As an animated kids movie, it’s fine. But this is Pixar which for the most part has had a high standard of storytelling. I should be left thinking about aspects of the movie and how they may or may not have deeper meanings; not rolling my eyes every few minutes because the dorky sidekick has a pen.
    3. The villain (spoilers) - I somewhat understand what they were trying to do with future Buzz being the main antagonist Zurg. But I feel that it went out of its way to do this when the prior source material has already stated that Zurg is an evil emperor of an alien/robot race. Not to mention that the movie completely doesn’t provide any explanation to how older Buzz gets this advanced technology other than “I’m borrowing it” - that’s just lazy writing. After a fun conversation with a friend of mine after the film, we brainstormed and came up with a better villain that I feel is more compelling and told a better story.
Bonus: Fixing the Villain (after a few drinks). Keep Zurg and the robot Army but introduce a new element - Commander Burnside. It is well stated that Burnside wants to go full force with his Lazer shield when he steps into power. Of course Buzz doesn’t trust Burnside when he comes back from trial to see that his best friend has passed away and replaced by Burnside who clearly doesn’t hold the same values as Buzz leading him to go against orders and try one last mission himself. For the 20 years that Buzz was gone on his successful trial, Burnside could have been pulling strings to make his lazer dream a reality. However, most of the citizens of the base did not think the same way as Burnside and threw his idea aside many times (reminds me of a certain barrier that one political leader was very found of…). This leads to Burnside conducting a secret project to create a robot army which will pretend to attack the base with intent to harm all that stand in their way. When people see the “threat” the robots face, they completely change sides and support the Lazer Shield idea. HOWEVER, like most science fiction properties that use robots, Burnsides new army develop enhanced intelligence and turn on him and go on creating a more advanced civilization and even creating more advanced such as their Evil Emperor Zurg.
This could all revealed in the third act with Buzz finding out the horrible truth at the parts depot and when going to confront Burnside, he could show remorse for his actions. Something along the lines of “I didn’t mean for things to go this far. I only did it to protect our people, they wouldn’t listen to me and this was the only way to show them this was what we needed”, etc. This being somewhat of a commentary on how using fear in a position of power on those you are supposed to be leading to ultimately get what you want isn’t sustainable and typically leads to even more problems and division (something that both sides of the political landscape do and as a result successfully turn us against each other to gain the upper hand in “public opinions”). Burnside could then learn from the error in his ways and help Buzz and his friends find a way to stop the robots in the climax of the film.
In my opinion this would have been way more affective and would also tie in to any future movies/properties they would plan to make while also keeping Buzz Lightyear Cannon (if that even is a thing?). They obviously want to do more with this film seeing that it had post credit scenes with the last one showing that Zurg (old Buzz) is still alive.
Anyways, thanks for reading and let me know what you think of my idea :)

i actually really enjoyed this film! and although i get that aspects of it were definitely cash-grabby, i feel like it’s important to remember that even though this should be enjoyable for the people who grew up watching the toy story films when they first came out, at the end of the day this is a film for kids now. and they’ll be way more familiar with modern sci fi films and tropes, so for them it’s probably super cool seeing buzz in that sort of setting! walking in, everyone knows that a large purpose of this film is to make more money from the toy story franchise, so that’s just a given. but i actually thought that looking past this aspect and the continuity errors that came with it (i.e. marketable characters that we never see in the original toy story films), it had a really good message about learning to forgive yourself and work with others! buzz’s criticism and guilt never comes from those around him, it’s always from himself and his own insecurity, which i think is a deliberate choice and something i know i can definitely relate to, and would’ve been able to relate to and understand had i watched this as a kid. so, tldr, yes i definitely agree that it could’ve been improved upon in some ways, and this video had some really interesting observations, but i really do think it was a pretty good and nostalgic film

Human beings will talk to inanimate objects - even when other people are present. If you were isolated from all other humans and talking to robots whose main response was to mispronounce your name, you may very well just go with their pronunciation.
Sox was shown to be ineffective from the start. He was supposed to help Buzz come to terms with the fact that the hyperfuel project had been suspended - he very obviously failed at that. When Buzz told him to do calculations to find the correct ratios for hyperfuel Sox just did what he was told - he didn't try to change Buzz's mind about that being a good course of action.

My biggest issue is how Buzz literally spent the whole first 2 arcs of the movie talking about "finishing the mission" and then again in the third act. And we never even know what the mission is!
He only slightly hints at it in the intro by saying "take these people home" or something, but that completely nullifies everything else in the movie basically? First, why are they exploring some planet and assessing habitability if their passengers already have a "home", and then, once the commander has had a son and grows up there's already an entire generation of people who are home, and then literally all the people who weren't "home" are dead anyway. Even when the movie addresses this, it only barely scratches the surface.
And then the fricking crystal, the whole point of the cat "fixing" the crystal was to avoid time dilation, and yet his crystal doesn't actually do that. We also never even touch on why the cat was able to solve the formula in 67 years but the robots and scientists working on the actual rockets don't.
Literally nothing in the script makes sense, it's just scenes to move the plot to other scenes to move the plot to other scenes....

Multiverse/Time-travel is difficult enough to understand but they glossed over it in such a lazy way that I have no clue what they were going for. It was like they wanted to copy Up’s villain but didn’t care how to make it work.

The thing that i don't understand about Zurg is how his mission turned him into Zurg at all from the baseline character he transforms from. He wasn't portrayed as someone obsessive enough with enough of a grudge to become Zurg in any capacity, which is ironic since those traits if present would have made for a much more interesting protagonist and antagonist in a much more thematically fitting way too.
He's so salty that everyone else moved on but him that he became a galactic warlord of destruction? I feel like there are several much easier and sensible reasons in the exact same setting that could result in the same Zurg but less stupidly and pettily so. What if he found out that Star Command was lying about returning home being possible at all and regularly sacrifices people to keep up the illusion as a way to retain power, and that made him hate Star Command enough to want to topple it and become Zurg with a robot army to do so? It would have also fit into the thematic concept of moving on, since Zurg's inability to forgive and forget injustices would make him the ultimate culmination of those flaws.

(spoilers?) I loved this movie. Personally, I loved the jokes, the slightly quick pacing, and the animation. The only thing that truly frustrates me was the villain, as you said. I hated the time travel cliche, it doesn’t make sense that an older buzz would be so murderous and oblivious to what he was doing. I would have simply preferred alien robots. Maybe the robots could have been trying to steal the core simply for the technology for their own gain? Like universal domination? It would have made much more sense, added more cool robots, and given the villain a better motive. I say that the movie started out strong, but kind of went downhill.

And I feel like there was a massive missed opportunity to explore how this evil Buzz truly came to hate Star Command. Show the Space Rangers becoming more and more frustrated with Buzz becoming so tunnel-visioned on his mission to return home. Creating a new crystal then using it to quit the planet... oh wait that's what he did in the movie! It wasn't that hard to find, the robot cat did it in a few seconds. I understand that loosing everything and being stuck on a planet with not a lot of food would make you depressed and crazy. I still find it strange that Buzz would use an armor and change his name to complete his mission; that doesn't make sense :S

the point of the movie is about how a person’s obsession with their job can lead to missing out on some other important things in their life. But in this case it’s taken to some incredible extremes thanks to the time travel stuff. Which thankfully is only used for that specific purpose.
Buzz’s Motives in Lightyear are kind of similar to his motives in the first Toy Story movie. Which makes a ton of sense when you think about it… Buzz in TS is just a toy mimicing the characters that the creators project on to them.
Edit: Ok, I see what the issue is now… Yeah, this movie would have been a lot better if it didn’t involve Buzz Lightyear and his Spin off franchise… It was still a great movie and I ideas and characters were still good, but the Zurg plotline completely ruined it for a lot of fans of the original Star Command franchise I believe. And the lack of Aliens was very awkward.
