      All I'm doing is observing and mixing according to what I see. What value is it? What hue is it? What intensity is it? Anybody can do that.

    I noticed that you got a better effect by mixing some chromatic blues first and then neutralizing them a bit - I tend to neutralize mine too much from the get-go and lose too much brightness - yours popped through just enough! Good example!

    Once again your method has amazed me! I see colors sometimes, but am not sure what to mix together to achieve it. I am going to have to look on your website for more neutral color information.

      In the long run, it's all about describing to yourself what you see rather than what it is.

    What a fun tip. I am new to oil painting and have trouble knowing when to mix warm and cool colors in a painting. Should one always use both and should it just be used when I mix the complements in warm and cool for neutrals? I realize I must paint what I see.... but I have had people make comments in my painting that they see cool and warm and I don't know if that is a complement or something I need to correct. LOL I just want you to know that I always see a wonderful difference in your tutorials from many I see on UA-cam or in classes. You are amazing.

      Thanks, Marie. I get lots of questions about cool and warm. I've got on the schedule a Quick Tip coming up about that but there are several on the schedule so it will be either late August or early September before it comes out. Meanwhile, warms and cools accent one another. For example, in my squirrels in the snow painting you referred to in another comment, the lights on the snow are warm and shadows cool. That's the reason light sparkles. So just think of warm/cool as tools and try to observe in nature how they work. Stay tuned.

      s`Thank you so much for your generous time. I revisited your video on warm and cool colors. I then went to your blog and ordered 4 DVD's on Color - mixing including temperature, hue etc. The link on your site took me to Amazon. I don't think the DVD's I ordered in the past from you show on my account - just the downloadable ones :). I also ordered a full video on "the River". I know - you say technique first but every now and then one needs a little fix LOL. Thanks again Dianne.

      I always say that watercolor painting is more akin to pottery making than to oil or acrylic painting. With watercolor, we use the same color theory as with oils and acrylics, but water is our white and wet in wet or wet on damp is our technique.

    what do you mix to get phthao blue please

      You really can't mix Phthalo blue. You can come close by adding ultramarine blue to either Rembrandt viridian or Phthalo green, but there are tube colors that cannot be mixed.

    Thanks Dianne. Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains we are continually challenged by the effects of atmosphere on hues as well as values of distant ranges. This was very helpful! Do you mind telling me what you are cleaning your brush with and if you ever use a medium? Thank you! Deborah Squier

      Deborah, for cleaning while working, I use Turpenoid turpentine substitute. For final cleaning at the end of a work session, I use Murphy's Oil Soap which is the best brush cleaner I've found yet (and I've tried many of them.) To answer your other question, I rarely used a medium. The only exceptions are if the painting is too stiff out of the tube, I mix into it a drop or two or refined linseed oil, and if I need the paint to dry fast, I add a bit of Liquin. I have tried Galkyd for faster drying, but don't like the gloss it leaves behind. I might add here that in the beginning, when I do the initial drawing/block-in with a wash, I use Gamsol.       Observe! What are the major shapes ? Within these what is in shadow? Within the shadow, what are the hues and what are the values? Within the areas not-in-shadow, what are the hues? What are the values? In both areas, how saturated is each hue?

      Look for how the lights and shadows are placed on the rocks rather than just rocks, then paint the values of the lights and shadows in the shapes that you see them. See Quick Tip 106.

    I never see you use cobalt blue. In Australia we have clear blue skies most of the time and although the horizon isn’t cobalt if you look straight up the sky is basically pure cobalt. Is there a reason why you avoid cobalt blue in sky mixes?

      Pat, when I look at a clear blue sky, I see many color variations. You can isolate areas of the sky by curling your fingers around to your thumb and making little tunnels with both hands to look through. That allows you to see areas of the sky in isolation and you discover that it is not just one flat color, but it has depth (after all, it is deep space). Cobalt blue alone cannot do this. Sometimes it's a bit redder, sometimes a bit greener, etc.
