Broken Airmatic | w220 rear strut replacement

  • Just as I talked to my son that this car just doesn't want to break and we should start looking into some mods to make some videos, the rear left air shock/airbag blows out while sitting at a cruise port for a week. Upon arrival from our vacation, the whole car sits on the ground.
    After starting the car this horrible squealing noise starts at around halfway lift and for the next 10 miles, we drive it just got worse. So, in order to attempt our 250 mile home trip, we pulled the 40A fuse so the compressor doesn't run for 3.5 hours and risk burning it out as well. I was ecstatic that without any further incident we made that trip home.
    A few days later we got an airbag from Advanced Auto Parts for $343.99 which can be had from Amazon for about the same. But wait, I got an email for a 25% off coupon and I still had another $20 coupon from a previous purchase. There was a $50 core, which after taxes and discounts, totaled $314.99. That is not bad for something that Mercedes charges about $1000 for. After the core was returned my grand total was $264.99, 2 hours of work, and because I needed my son to get dirty on this one too, my lovely wife had to run the camera for a while as well.
    Now I know that there are cheaper shocks from China but I have heard/read mixed reviews on quality. I could have saved a little more money, but as you can see, these are remanufactured by Continental (another great German company). I didn't mind spending a little more for a good quality product.
    I don't ask for subscribers and comments on my videos but I do appreciate them. I read all the comments and emails and reply as soon as I can.
    Thank you for watching :)

    Dude I’m happy I found your video because I have a 2004 s430 and I walked outside rushing for work and noticed that my lovely Mercedes was slammed to the ground in the rear like a lowrider, I was furious because I heard about the horror stories about the Airmatic suspension cost to repair from the dealer etc but to see that it can actually be done with mechanical aptitude and common sense which I have both makes me happy. Well I have to tackle this same adventure hopefully mines ends with success as you guys did, thanks again for the insight and video DIY keep em coming I’ll keep you guys posted about my journey on conquering the Airmatic Suspension beast hahaha...

      Please. Let us know. Yeah, our videos are not always step by step instruction but with the insight hopefully people aren’t scared to tackle a project like this on their own. Like you said, common sense is the most important ingredient in the recipe. We haven’t been doing much videos lately as the cars are perfect and aren’t breaking. As soon as something comes up however, we’ll post it immediately. Hope your build goes well. Make sure the car is secured. These beasts are heavy. Good luck ;)

    Great video.. thanks for filming this, it made a HUGE difference. This is definitely a two man job if you don't have a lift. I was seriously debating whether I could even do this sort of big job... It took me about 3 hours total because there was a lot of figuring it for the first time. I do plan on doing the other side and I bet it will only take half the time now. I have a 2006 S430 AMC and the part number for the rear Air suspension strut is AS-2194 and I bought it from Advanced Auto. The total charge was $427 but then I returned the core and it was only $377. If I would have had some coupons it would of even been cheaper. Mechanic would of charged me in the ball part of $850-1450 for one side.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching. First time we attempted it, that's why it took so long. Buy one at a time as Advanced auto part coupon tops out at $50. So I make usually several purchases when that happens to maximize the discount. Still, sooo much cheaper than at the dealer and it's really not that hard.

      When we did the other side it took us a solid hour. If/when you cut the cable, make sure it’s the correct one. Some people have cut the wrong one. Also, you have a lot more space if you remove the caliper. We did on the other side which we didn’t film and it was much easier. A lot more room. To compress the shock I put a piece of 1x1 and lifted it on the attached little tube on the bottom of the shock. It made things easier as well. Hope you have a good/fun/easy time. Good luck, and make sure you support the car well enough.

      We had Pirelli on when making the video. Somehow the Mexican made pirellis are not as good as the European made ones. We ended up switching to Continental and these are soooo much better. Don't take me wrong. I always had good luck with Pirelli, the last set on the S500 as well as my 200c were shit!

      I recently installed the some continentals on the Mercedes. I have noticed that if you get the Cinturato made in Mexico they for some reason have less grip than the ones made in Germany. Must be a different compound. I'm in the process of changing 12k mile old tires on my 200 because I'm not happy with the Cinturato Comp Sport. Discount Tire will prorate them.

    • @Turbo_Snail

      Don’t drive it, the pump will burn out and you’ll have additional issues. If you really need to drive there is a fuse to disable the pump. The car will ride low but it’ll get you where you need to go in an emergency.

    • @Turbo_Snail

      I need to mention. If you ever store your car for extended amount of time, (I’ll make a video in the future I guess) put it on some jacks.
      What I do, I measure the height, cut a piece from 4x4 lumber, put the car in the raised suspension setting, put the blocks underneath the jack points and return it back to regular ride height. Now the car barely rests on the blocks. If it slowly looses air it will rest in the blocks. After a few months, start the car, raise it, remove the blocks and you’re ready to drive.
      Once the shocks bottom out you are essentially damaging them.

    Hey man great video. I had a few questions I would like to ask you in regards to my 2012 CLS 550. I was told I need to replace the left and right rear air suspension strut. This part is said to be covered under my CPO extended warranty. However, I am being told that it isn’t covered bc it’s not a part not in fact covered. Am I being given the run around or could this be true? Not sure how many parts go in to the suspension. Thought it was the actual air bag and strut. Could use your expertise. Thanks.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  5 років тому +2

      I would definitely dig further into this. The suspension is not a part that just wears out like some brakes. I'm sorry I can't help you but you definitely want to get a copy of the contract and carefully read through it. Maybe you should have another dealer look into this and get another opinion. I hope it ends in your favor.

  • @stephencannon3140
    @stephencannon3140 6 років тому

    Anyone who can chime in with helpful comments. I test drove a 2007 E550 4 magic with the air suspension. First thing I noticed was the different size tires. Didn’t think that odd until I checked the tire placard. They were 45R/17 front and rear. Rears 245 and fronts 215. Not overly unusual in a sport performance sedan. Both fronts were 215 and both rears were 245. Placards said 245 all four corners. Tires looked pretty rough anyway so would use that for price leverage. And personally would probably get Pirellis all the way around. The problem came in the drive. Felt like rear tires were either rubbing or bumping on something. Only drove it a few miles and found a area away from sewer line of sight for further inspection. Suspension seemed to be about right if it was low it was low on all four corners and level. No aromatic system warnings and indicated vehicle was rising. The system rises slowly and you pretty much have to be outside the vehicle to watch it rise. Although no warnings I suspect either tires, brakes or airmatic struts any thoughts?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 роки тому

      You can go 245 all around. Even tho staggered looks better (IMO) you can rotate the tires if they are all the same, which means longer tire live and even wear. Ours runs 225 on 17's all around. We have the base version. If I could score some bigger wheels I'd love to go 245. It'll look so much better.

  • @stephencannon3140
    @stephencannon3140 6 років тому

    A major note for European vehicles. Unlike American or even Asian vehicles the lug nuts are part of the stud. That comes into play due to the tire weight. However heavy the tire is will feel even heavier when there is no stud for the tire to catch. You will have to line up the tire and mounting hole first. After you get the first stud in you should be able to rotate the tire to along the other studs. Not necessarily a deal breaker for a sale but something to think about. Raise vehicle slowly and minimal height to accomplish task.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 роки тому

      You know, all my cars now have bolts rather than studs and even tho it was a pain on my first vehicle, it's fairly easy to install the tire now. I actually like the bolts better. I stripped one, just replace it, before I had to take the whole thing apart to get a stud out. I think all the manufacturers are going bolts instead of studs nowadays. They do have a long helper bolt you can use for alignment on Amazon if you ever need one.

    • @stephencannon3140
      @stephencannon3140 4 роки тому

      Turbo Snail I know about that alignment bolt. I purchased two. Made it a lot easier when Indid my brakes and the windshield washer pump.
      Highly recommended for European vehicles and I would get the one specifically threaded for the vehicle involved.

    Part 2:.....This will be a used vehicle purchase so I would plan the typical used car stuff plugs oil fluids brakes etc. No other issues other than some exterior bulbs windshield washer fluid and the possible airmatic issue. Overall a decent ride car fax checks out and body matches description other than the carbon Fiber wrap on the roof which will go bye bye. Any thoughts on the rear rubbing ? The local mechanic did not have a tech available for a lift inspection so will try again tomorrow. Tires I am planning to R/R anyway and even with a $300 Airmatic corner still fairy reasonable.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 років тому +1

      If you can, especially with a Mercedes, pay for the pre-purchase inspection. Always money well spent. You get a full list of anything and everything that is not correct with the car.

      Funny you should mention that. As soon as I started talking about a PPI I said I would be back today. Sometime between when I left and a few hours later the car disappeared off their website. Totally disappeared not showing sold not showing available or even pending sale. Ironically the same dealer has a 2008 Infiniti M35 with about 27K more miles but same price. The Infinity does not appear to have air suspension and looks good. I found a 2006 S430 though on a different dealer. midnight Blue and ash interior 102K. Loaded. I will check out that one today. I really like the 2007 E550 but if it was sold not the end of the world.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 років тому

      Wow, that tells you everything you need to know about that dealer. If you are going to get that Infinity I would do a PPI as well. I love the E550, nice looking car. The airmatic, as many people as there are complaining about it and the cost involved to fix it, there are even more people loving it. Once you ride on an airmatic you will have a hard time going back. Not only that but it is sooo adjustable to your driving style, you can lower the car for only a few bucks, etc. etc.
      All that being said, plan on someone doing an inspection for you. At least you know what you are getting in and what your future expenses will be. Good luck!!!

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 років тому +2

      It dropped lower on that side. Just park it and watch it go down uneven. Also, mine made a noise so it was easy to pinpoint. When I jacked it up, you could hear air going back into the shock. I think you can even hear it in the video.

    • @oobooautos2443
      @oobooautos2443 6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the fast response! Sorry, one last question, so when you turned the car on, would it rise back at all or would it stayed in that lower position? Mine raises, but it still not leveled with the driver side.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 років тому +2

      Yes it raised up but mine started sagging immediately after turning off. Sometimes you have to give it a day or 2 for the suspension to collapse. Be patient it will pay off. I only swapped that one and the other side is still stock. I had no need to replace the other side yet. Wait for advanced auto parts coupon if that is available in your area. They do offer 20-25% off coupons/codes. It helped a lot. :)

    • @oobooautos2443
      @oobooautos2443 6 років тому

      Ok, reason I ask, is because I suspected it may be the control level unit not the strut? I tried the soap test on the strut and no bubbles. It collapses when I turn off the car. When I turn on the car it goes back up ok (but not at the same level as the left/driver side). I drive it for a little bit and the car message says malfunction and I go outside of the car to look, it has collapsed.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 років тому

      Your shock is leaking internally somewhere. If you put soapy water on top where the line goes in it just checks if the leak is there which is unlikely. Whatever side takes the longest to go back up is probably the culprit.

    I am going to try your method with replacing my left rear strut. It seems that you just removed the bolts that hold the cradle on the bottom, one bolt from the link connector and then jimmied it through the brake lines? The last time I tried this, I did the whole process and removed the brake caliper then removed everything. What I am concerned with is that 4:35 you are struggling to get something loose. It seemed that there was something blocking the cradle from completely coming down. What was the issue?It is hard to see on video and you don't address it.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 роки тому

      You have to jimmy it out. It’s tight but it will come out. I know all other videos it shows that you have to remove the brakes as well. If you have a pry bar you can force the whole wheel assembly down so you can clear it. Another alternative would be to create a vacuum in the shock so it retracts, but I didn’t think about it back then.
      At 4:35 I am forcing the lower part of the shock out to find a place to fish it thru for removal. Like I said. It’s tight but it will come out.

      are all your connections back on tight? No leaks? The air connector and the electric connector? Are you sure the shock is blown? If it's blown you should be able to swap it out as they should come with some type of warranty. Maybe its a line or a different part of the system. If nothing works I've seen somewhere they smoke test it. They blow smoke through the system and see if it leaks and where it leaks. I've seen on Amazon they are selling those smoke machines for about $200. I wish I could help you but at this point, I'm out of ideas. Keep us updated and let us know if you can solve it!

    • @Turbo_Snail

      The car will try to level itself automatically, however, based on what you are telling me it looks like maybe a sensor might not be working properly and therefore doesn't see that the car is rising. Double check that you plugged the cable back in tight.
      But please, if you continue having issues, leave it disconnected. You don't want to damage a shock or the compressor. Doesn't sound like you have a leak either. Seems like its sealed. I think you should talk to a professional or someone with more knowledge at the MB forum. They are a lot more knowledgeable than me. I use it as a source for info all the time. Try disconnecting the battery for the computer to reset. Maybe it just needs some time to relearn it. Spray some soapy water on the connections to make sure there is no leak. If that doesn't go away the only thing I can think of is that there may be a leak at the block where the air gets split off after the pump. But if it goes up quick and doesn't sag after sitting outside overnight, I think its a job well done and job well worth it. So in my book that's about a $3000+ savings! ;) Cheers!
