- Is your car sitting lower and lower in the rear over time? Does it sit low after leaving it overnight or for a few days? If yes, it is time you replaced your struts. This video details the rear air strut replacement for 2000-2007 S500 and S430 (W220) Mercedes vehicles. If you live in the US or can order from US, you can procure re-manufactured shocks at $297 apiece as of July 2018.
In the process, you can also learn how to replace your rear Link Rods and Spring Control Arms.
One part I did not tape is to tighten the 3rd of the three Spring Control Arm bolts at the very end - the one that connects the CA to the Subframe although I have it in the Procedure Summary in the beginning along with the Torque value of 50NM and 90 Degrees. - Авто та транспорт
Thanks for showing the connector apart. I couldn't tell how it separated. It's not easy to get to let alone disconnect.
You are very welcome. Thanks.
Thanks for a great video. I was right to the point. You helped me replace mine in about an hour!!
You are very welcome, Howard.
Many thanks from Brazil for your video. Very informative.
You're most welcome, Marco.

Hi - thank you for the kind comment.
Masood I just did this job last week and couldn’t have done it without this video.
I am so glad you found it useful. Thx.
Thank you!
You are most welcome, Jose.
Muchas gracias por compartir su conocimiento
De nada, Alberto. Thanks.
Hi Masood, As usual, another fantastic and useful video! quick question: when you loosened the 18mm control arm nut connecting to the rear sub-frame, does re-torquing require the vehicle to be under load?
Hi and thank you. No, it levels up by the time it connects to the wheel.
Thanks for the video questions do you need yo reset the sensors or the computer to level the car again or to pump the ir again ??? My mechanic charge me to rest it I don't see you talk about that in the video about resetting? ????
Hi Jr Ramos, no need to reset if you follow the procedure in the video.
thanks for this Awesome video and all pertinent information provided.
I drove my 2004 S500 from Atlanta to New York. The day after, my left rear had drop. Alarm indicated car too low to drive. Car did rise back to the ride height after it was started. I drove it back from New York to Atlanta without any issues. Since I have been back the car has not exhibited the issue again for 3 weeks now. I think the left rear struts is leaking and needs replacing also the dust cover is on both rear and front struts are won out. Do you think all 4 struts needs replacing? I have 104,000 miles on the vehicle.
Also, how can one tell if Control Arm or Link Rods needs replacing?
I am so sorry, Matt, not to have seen your post earlier. If you haven't already, you should replace both rear struts first. You can replace the front ones later or before another long trip. It all depends on driving conditions, but I have a friend who's front shocks lasted over 150K miles.
Replace the Link Rods and Control Arms for sure if you haven't for the last 104K miles to restore the car's smooth ride. I have a video on the link rods and will soon be uploading one for the control arms. Good luck and sorry again for the very late reply.
I had both rear and driver side replaced and now my power steering is stiff, and the car sits a little lower after raising it with the airmatic button. What could be the issue? It was worked on by a shop.
I am not sure, but I think you should take it back to the same shop to read the codes.
you dont have to remove all that for the struts to come off thats working harder
Hi K.R., not aware of a shortcut. Those steps are pretty much what the workshop manual states. Please elaborate.

Hi Tricky Wily, and thanks. It sounds like you have had to replace more than just a few parts - naturally, frustrating....
