In this video we are going to show you how to install or swap to electric fans on your NBS Silverado or Sierra. I really wish that GM would have done this earlier in the run of these trucks. I will be say that I like to use original GM Fans if you are able to find a set for a decent price. This electric fan swap is very easy and adds several benefits. You will free up some extra horsepower. You should see an increase in gas mileage and the reason I did it was the sound. The stock fan clutch is crazy loud and I just can't stand it. You will notice in this video in order for this swap to work you need to have the 34" Core radiator. I originally thought I had that but didn't. Bonus you also get to see how to install the bigger core radiator. I purchased and install a GM OEM radiator for nbs silverado and sierra. This is a pretty easy install also. It gave me the opportunity to drain the old dexcool and replace too. If you are looking to get e fans on your silverado or sierra this video is a must watch. This how to will also apply to tahoe and yukon of the same years. One of the best mods for a NBS silverado or NBS sierra. Hit the comments and let me know what you think.

Thanks for all the great vids Travis, I did the efan swap over the summer and it certainly helps when driving in stop and traffic here in Texas, anyone interested in purchasing the OEM harness, I have 2 available, kind of a hobby now for me
Send me some info on harness. Email is twamotorsports at hotmail
I’m interested, what’s your email addy…?
Do you still have the harness? How much are you wanting for it?
@@405ruben No I don’t have anymore, it’s been tough trying to find more at the pick and pull yards.
I've taken several of these fans off. As Bobby Taylor said get a wrench on it and wack it a couple of times. Always worked for me. Very easy. Always enjoy your video Travis. Keep them up.
Thank you. I never have luck that way
I have 10 in. adjustable Wrench for that in my tool bag.@@TWAMotorsports
Always learn something when watching TWA Motorsports! Thanks
Hopefully it helps someone that is struggling with fan noises. Lol
I just did this mod a little over a year ago. One of the best upgrades you can make on these rigs. You get better cooling at idle, which helps with the AC. You get less noise in some respects. The slight pickup in HP. More room in your engine bay to work on other stuff when needed. The worst thing for me was waiting several months because my HP Tuners was on backorder for months.
Pro tip on removing the clutch fan: Sacrifice a wrench by cutting an end off and welding it to an air hammer tool at a 90 degree angle. If you have the means of course. I realize not everyone has access to a welder.
I agree
I did mine because of the noise and also because my a/c wouldn’t blow cold at idle. And when I tell you Travis it’s night and day. I wish I would have done it a lot sooner!!! And the easy access to the engine compartment too!
Definitely a lot better
I did that E-fan swap to my 2000 Sierra and my boys 02 tahoe. Sierra gave me fits. Being a 4x4 and older than the Tahoe also 4x4 by 2 years my 4WD quit working, no lo range, just 1st and 2nd gear . Couldnt figure it out had to have a tuner install a different program out of a 2005 Sierra. Works good now. Even with the headache, it was worth it to me, as I live in the So. Ca. desert, and I haul water trailers out to the desert for our wildlife drinkers. Keep up the good work, enjoy your channel.
Good to hear you got it lined out.
Ive done this several times now and i ALWAYS use the OEM harness. It makes it plug and play.
You can get the radiator and fans from any 05-13 truck. If you have to drain the coolant you might as well get a new overflow tank it makes it look so much nicer.
Very true
What harness?? Can you help me?
Keep checking link in description. He makes them and post them randomly
Nice job Travis on e-fan swap on the Z71... You have that HP tuners down to a tee.. pretty much mastered it..
Thank you. Know enough to be dangerous
That was a very well done efan upgrade! You hit on all the needed details.
I did the same on my 2002 Sierra. Best choice is to use the factory fans and wiring for sure (Fits and looks stock). I pulled fans and wiring ($45) from a local junkyard and it was a good education for the install.
Had to change the radiator too, but well worth it. Engine temp is always good even on the hottest days.
My fan clutch was loud as well and I always notice the quieter engine when driving. Few extra horsepower is slightly noticeable, but also a good chance to clean things up and adds room to work under the hood.
For the 99 to 02 you have to change out the a/c sensor or the a/c will not work correctly. Tune is a little different too but easy.
Great video and editing, I love that I'm not the only one that cleans and paints as I work! 👏👍
Thank you. Definitely better than the fan clutch.
Can I get more info on which ac sensor I would need ?
Not sure what an ac sensor is
@@dxnnycrtz Just search for "99 to 02 ac pressure sensor upgrade". That should get you the right info.
@@TWAMotorsports Guess I should add that for the tune you just change the ac settings to the ones in an 05. But best to look it up in the forums to get the right info.
2005 was definitely the first year for the electric fans on GM trucks/SUVs. I’ve used flex- a -lite in the past, The fans are well built but the universal fan controller can be a bit troublesome.
I agree on the fans. Flex a lite us a great brand.
Did this on my 00 Z71 last year, what a great mod. Great vid as always man, hope all is well.
Thank you. Definitely makes a difference in several ways. Good here. Hopefully good on your end too
@@TWAMotorsports Everything's good man, Daughter turns 18 this Jan and Graduates HS this coming may so just a lot of family stuff. Just installed a Detroit Truetrac and 4:10's on my truck. All in all rebuilt the entire rear end. First time I've had the diff cover off since buying this truck a couple of years ago and I found nothing but carnage. RPO code was for 3.73's with no Gov Lock. No place in the glove box was the G80 code. But she sure had one and it was smoked. Surprised I never had any issues with the rear-end. The magnet was completely covered in metal, the fluid was burnt and thick and I probably used a gallon of brake clean on the rear axle tubes and carrier housing getting all the metal shavings out. Glad I get it free from work, so a simple job turned into a 3 day job but don't they all! lol. I lucked out on the pinion depth as the factory shim was perfect and only had to remove one shim on the left side to get my backlash within spec. So going back together went pretty smooth. Going to drain and inspect how everything's wearing in next week and top it back off.
Definitely busy it sounds like
@@TWAMotorsports so you went with some 4.10 s ! Nice !
Not me
Another great diy mod video! Still running the clutch fan on my 2000 Z71, gonna check the radiator tomorrow to see if its the 34". ✌🏻
Yeah it makes a huge difference
Truck is looking better and better
Thank you James
I'm about to do this on my 2002 Escalade. I snagged the fans from a 2009 Silverado. Also have a 2004 2500HD to do. A point I haven't seen addressed, both of mine are 6.0's and already have the larger radiator. No antifreeze mess!! :-)
That's good at least
i have a delco fan clutch on my 92 k1500...never gets over heated ..had a spare made before i retired from delco...made in plt 11...
Yeah they work but hate the sound
@@TWAMotorsports i have the silent clutch came out in 92..no roar when cold...
Lol. Nice
And also thank you for doing these videos. They are very helpful.
my favorite way to remove the fan is wrap a rather strap end around the water pump and put the hook to the alternator bolt. then the pulley can’t turn at all and a few solid whacks to a wrench with a hammer and they come right off
Good idea too
Will be doing to my turbo 03 Tahoe
Sounds nice
also a heads up the harness goes behind the pcm bracket like the stock location and there’s another fuse box cover that has the access for the fan relays
I that the ones I have seen had a removable top
I understood everything before the laptop.
Its freaky!
It isn't for everyone
Great video 🔥🤝💪🏽 adding on my truck now
Thank you
Great info. I’ll be doing this on my suburban.
Thank you. Definitely a great upgrade
I'm a big fan of this video. 🤣
Lol
use a wrench the size of the fan nut and hit it with a hammer to shock it lose will come right off no need to use air hammer for the diy guys
Don't have a wrench that size
My 05 didn't come with electric fans or a trans cooler but did come with AC and the factory towing package 🤷
Wild
Would like to possibly do this to my 04 z71. Just did some led swappin and next project is rusty fuel line replacments.
Same process on 04
On my 2003 Silverado I had I used a 2 foot long crescent wrench from harbor freight to remove the fan when I replaced the fan clutch. I put the crescent wrench on the nut and hit it a couple times and it broke loose.
You must be lucky. I would fight it forever that way. Lol
@@TWAMotorsports I guess I was lucky because I only hit it hard 2-3 times and it broke loose. Tightened it by hitting the crescent wrench in the opposite direction.
Lol.
So your not only a good mechanic, but also Doogie Howser on the Computer ?! 💯
Not at all. Lol
On 10:10 man, there's a much easier way and you don't mess anything up, you just need a BIG adjustable wrench and a soft hammer, you put the wrench as tight as you can on the nut, and just hit it with the hammer and it comes loose, did it with mine like 3 times.
I'm never that lucky.
Electric fans make a lot of noise too my friend
Not in comparison
O.M.G... I don't know how you didn't replace that dirty overflow tank? That thing is soo dirty, TOTALLY unusable... 🤣🤪 Jus f/n with ya!!
Believe me, it took everything I had not to. Lol
What the ebay seller's info for the factory set ..I would like to get it
I think he is out of them
Sorry if I missed it; but for much is the software and hardware?
Probably 600ish
You think I can do this same setup on my 2000 silverado 1500 extended cab?
Yes but as I said the harness is different and pins differently
Hey Travis! Great video! Where did you end up connecting your power? Didn’t quite catch that.
On fuse block 7mm under hood
Where did you get that factory style harness? I didn't see the link. Or am I blind?
Randomly listed on ebay
Do you happen to have the video on you doing it on your 99-02 truck? I can’t seem to find it. I have an 01 and I’ve always wanted to do the swap but I’m a visual learner and I want to know what to do as far as splicing into the AC stuff before I get my hands in there
Yes It is one of the green truck videos
@@TWAMotorsports I will try to look for it, also do you know how I could get in contact with the person who you bought the harness off of?
It is linked in the video description
Hi..i have a question i was working on my truck and i did the first green wire to the blue connector but on my truck where the the blue wire supposed to go on pin 33 there is already a conector already..now i don't know where to conect that one.. and Also my connector is red
As I explained in this video, this is for 03 and up only. Doesn't work on 99-02👍
I’m thinking of doing this conversion on my 03 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 do the electric fans use a lot of power, and while I have to upgrade for a high amps alternator
Alternator wouldn't hurt
Hell yeah
Which one is fan 1 and which one is fan 2
Are both supposed to come on low and high once up to set temp, or is one fan low and one fan for high
Both on low and then switch to high. Don't know that it matters which is which.
Whats the guy info you bought the harness from
Randomly posts them. No idea his name
Hello Sir, I just came across your video and subscribed. I really liked your format, but could you please possibly get a part number for the harness you used when you added electric fans to your truck? I clicked on the link you have, but it just takes me to Amazon and not the part and I can’t find it, I want a direct fit like you show in this video. Any help please thank you so much. I’ll wait for your reply. Have a good day.
The guy doesn't have anymore. Would have to get one from a wrecking yard
I got a driver side mirror for you dl3
I actually have one
Do you have a updated link for the harness you used?
No it is randomly on ebay
@@TWAMotorsports gottcha thanks for the reply!
@RoboJohnson618 you're welcome
Hey man quick question doing this upgrade to my 03 Yukon do I need to upgrade the alternator or the stock one should be good
It wouldn't hurt to
@@TWAMotorsports since I’m in California by tuning the computer would I still be able to pass smog or no
No idea on the ridiculous laws there.
@@TWAMotorsports lol
California has much bigger problems than a few feet of snow.
Yeah, like Newsom.
How's it going Travis. Great video. I plan to do this upgrade to my 03 Suburban. You mentioned you got the wrie harness from someone on ebay. Could you share his infor, please. Thank you for the DIY videos. Keep them coming.
He is out of them.
@@TWAMotorsports bummer. Thanks for the response.
You're welcome.
Been watching for a while had a curiosity what happened to the fan clutch I guess I missed that part?
Removed for electric fans
I'm trying to do the same to my Denalis cuz they can't take the Texas heat!! How much would it cost me if u do this ?
All parts listed in video description below video
Nice job ! Lol , my 2003 sounded the same way with the mechanical fan ! so much better in so many ways ! i have a nice 2003 Silverado LS , similar to your black truck , but mine is white and bottom is putter color is whats its called , kinda gold in color on the lower half , i went and bought the Flex a Lite Dual Fan , i am guessing i am getting about 35-45 more h/p no kidding , just with the fan swap , i was looking for better gas mileage not knowing that the air conditioner will work omg so so much better ! Better gas mileage , More H/P , Colder AC , you can also increase it a little bit more by throwing down some shorty headers from ebay and a K&N air cleaner , use Snythetic oil and nothing but Super un-leaded !
Yeah, changing them out is definitely the way to go.
Hello all. I'm having a hard time finding the correct information on Google or YT videos. I have a 2004 Yukon XL 2500 with the 8.1ltr engine. I have a radiator that's Core Width: 37-13/16 Inch, Core Height: 19-7/16 Inch. Inlet Hose Diameter: 1-9/16 Inch
Outlet Hose Diameter: 1-13/16 Inch. Every swap video I see involves a 34" core radiator. Is there a electric fan swap setup for keeping the 8.1ltr factory size radiator? I just put my new radiator in last year and would prefer to keep it.
Not that I am aware of but measure only the fin section not the entire radiator. My guess is you have a 34" unit already
Good gob i learn how to install the fans in my 2006 GMC Sierra kindly can you till me what what type of cleaner you used ❤
I use super clean first and silk shine next. Link in video description
@@TWAMotorsports thank you my friend
You're welcome
Would it be easier to use a 2005 and newer pcm or is there problems
That isn't easier at all
So a 2005 pcm with a electric fan won't plug up to a 2003 harness and work the fan properly. I really don't know just trying to get some information. Thank you anything will help just about to do first LS swap.
@raineythomas750 it would but the computer would not talk to the body control module without tuning and way way more work. Have to swap an entire harness
I need some help. Where is link for the wiring harness from eBay that you mentioned in the video?
Out of them I guess
Did you have to upgrade the alternator? I'm looking to do this mod but still have the factory 110a alternator. I was wondering if i should plan on getting a 145a
Wouldn't be a bad idea
Great video ! Did I miss a new purchase ? I haven't seen the blue and white 67/68 C10 before.
It's a friend of mines
Travis what's the guy web site that you got your electric fan harness from.
He was on ebay and is gone now.
Ok thanks for the fast reply. Keep up the good work. Love how you put parts in the discription. Wish our UA-camrs have that common sense.
You're welcome. Glad I can help when possible
i have an extra oem harness with pcm pins attached to it too
If he doesn't want it I will take it
Hypothetical switch on my fans what else? We're really can I still drive what am I all the time or when I need them
?
I put a wire on my fan with a switch is that good enough
If that works for you.
One is 2001 and a 2002!! I wanted to out stock fans from a 2005 , do u think it can be done with out the tune thing u do with the computer??
No. Need to wire in
How does the alternator hold up when the AC kicks in?
Seems good
Good evening. I picked up a 2000 Sierra 1500 and it's peeing out the weep-hole. So I have to do the water pump anyhow.
But watched your vid and the harness that comes up looks NOTHING like what you installed. And didn't see a link to that seller on Ebay. It's a VIRGIN truck! and nothing goofy and or silly done to it. (220K)
Thanks
I listed an aftermarket harness which is all that is available at this time. It works the same way
I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500. Can I go to a clutch fan on it and take those electric fans off
Yes
I want to know if I can change my fans to a clutch screen and I have a fan with a switch on it. My relay Box blue now. I have a switch for my fans to turn on and turn off and I put a clutch pin on my truck. I have a spot for one. I have a two thousand and five chevy silverado fifteen hundred
I'm sure you could.
What was the place where you got all the fan set up? I know he said eBay but what’s he under or how can I find it?
He doesn't have anymore
Where did you get the wire harness from? I can’t seem to find the oem style harness
He apparently doesn't have any available right now. Others work the same though. Used them in the past.
Did you have charging problems after install? Every time my fans come on, my voltage drops to 12v upgraded alternator and still have shitty voltage at idle when fans are on
I didn't but might need a 130 amp alternator
You may need a wiring upgrade such as the Big Three ground setup. I used 1/0 power and ground wires in the charging circuit. Also added a 2nd battery in parallel to supplement added current draw. GM makes a battery bracket for the passenger side engine compartment. Then I added a Nations 300 amp alternator I did this upgrade 3 years ago using a new factory 34" radiator, factory fan assembly from Rock Auto and a relay controller from the wrecking yard. Works flawlessly. BP Automotive can help with wiring and tech support. I would start with the wire upgrade and a GM high output alternator. School bus alternators put out 165 amps. Should be plenty of amps. Hope this may help your voltage drop issues ! I added all this power for a killer sound system too !
I wonder, what do you do if the people before you did an LS swap (same year 2003) and already using pin 33 on both units. And they're not going to the fans. I have no idea where theyre going with so much wire. If anyone has an idea what might be going on there, please help.
Used the wrong engine would be my guess. Probably need harness for 99-02
Having that same problem right now pin 33 on the red connector on my 2001 Chevy Tahoe is already taken need help
I said that up front on this video. Only can use this method on 03-04
Can this be done to a 2002 v6? I live in Texas and it gets really hot in the summer that I prefer e fans
Probably but wiring would be different
What is the sellers name that sells that wiring kit on eBay. I looked in your info bar I may just overlooked it if I did, I apologize
Apparently he is out of them
Just my luck lol I’m working on a 2003 extended cab 4 x 4, one piece at a Time lol
Aftermarket ones are good too. Used one on my green truck
Travis, you mentioned 99-02 are different. Can you still use an oem harness?
Not on those. Had to be aftermarket like I used on my green truck video
@@TWAMotorsports got it, Thx Travis. Awesome videos!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching
I've done this swap on a 2000 and I have all the settings in the tune. The fan stays on a low speed any time the truck is running. I believe it is because the operating system on the ECU doesn't have the fan abilities. Does anyone know how to upload a different Operating system in to hp tuners?
Common in older than 2003 trucks
@@TWAMotorsports do you know how to change the operating system on the ecu?
One fan plugs in ecm or into a/c. Did it on my green truck
@@TWAMotorsports how long ago? I cant find that vid
Quite a while
Interested
Be careful with that air hammer on the water pump. On one of my trucks I had a "mechanic" replace the clutch fan and a couple days later the front housing broke completely off of the water pump. Left me stranded and the "mechanic" was puzzled when I called him about it. I do everything I can myself and don't trust many to touch my vehicles. I was in a pickle at the time.
Yeah it is just a bump to loosen

Ok?
?
