I love that it wasn't a big flashy ending. No huge finale just a soft showcase of the normal workings of a newsroom and the promise that it continues on the way it always has
Megan Owens , as long as you realize it was fiction. No nightly newscast is ran that way today. There aren’t a dozen people in the control room. Automation has that down to three or four. There aren’t the huge newsrooms of yesteryear. There are a few highly paid individuals and a bunch of news people making less than a first year intern does in Marketing or Law. The few technical staff left will often make more than only a few of the reporters. As the ratings decline and the dollars made go down it will only get worse. The real difference between the old days of Cronkite, Murrow, Brinkley, Rather, and the masters was that the Networks and station’s didn’t expect to make money on news. It was a responsibility they had to perform in order to sell the rest of the day. There are plenty of people that would love to do the news the old fashioned way. Sadly, most wouldn’t watch them. Finally, newsrooms are not filled with beautiful people. Those people only work in front of the camera. The rest of us, well, we look like everybody else.

I'm positive that whatever level of automation you have experienced in todays time is completely moot as to what would have happened back in 2012.
rek131, you might think so except that’s exactly the business I’m in and was when they shot the show. In fact, they used part of a news room I had installed a broadcast automation system in the previous year to shoot a walkthrough while their set was being built. Granted it was at a time when such automation was relatively new and some folks hadn’t fully swapped over, but that’s not why I mentioned it to be honest. I just didn’t want folks thinking that it was ran the same today. In fact, it’s even more so in the time of COVID. We have customers where maybe 20% of the staff are actually in the newsroom and everyone is working remotely. We don’t know if this will be the new normal or if after COVID they will go back to everyone on site. It’s simply unknowable I guess, other than the companies will continue to try and do it with less people and less money. Some are fighting their unions and others are just doing it.
@@Bill_N_ATX - Yes, I don't think anyone thinks its run the same today. Let's not forget that our kids are about to go back to school via Zoom. Times change. My wife worked in broadcast about the time of this show and it was very much like its portrayed here. Of course not all newsrooms are going to be the same.
I love how the ending scene was beautifully and smartly made. Casts just doing their “normal”jobs without all the drama. And how they shifted their focus on the screen when the intro sound was played. It was all scene was just so pure.
From the beginning with the northwestern scene till the end this show was just full of unbelievably great moments and scenes. The dialogue was unbelievable and the music always seem to match what was going on. I can’t believe they didn’t continue with the show.
What a damned shame that THE NEWSROOM isn't in production during the 2015-2016 GOP Presidential Debates. Seriously, was there EVER a more target-rich environment for such a brilliant production? I'll say it again: A Damned Shame.

Saying "good show", before doing a show is a common practice in show business. Here probably used with a double meaning. But really is just the same as "good luck", but you don't say it, because it's bad luck :) Mac says "good show" to her guys before the show many times in the series.
ME TOO! I absolutely go to "clips" for that pick me up inspiration that leaves me wanting to TRY again! AND, these clips from many different show have always been a positive boost for me in an otherwise ugly world...so I stay humble and enjoy "a quickie".....Happy "Afternoon Delight " to ALL....Cheers!
I get to watch The Newsroom whenever I want. I never get tired of watching it. Yet, I feel sad that it didn't get the number of seasons it deserved just like the other Aaron Sorkin shows, Sports Night and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The only Sorkin show that lasted was The West Wing. And even Aaron left after the fourth season.
I'm sure there a myriad of reasons why terrific shows like Newsroom, and The West Wing cease production. And i'm positive there are as many reasons why crappy, dumbed-down shows thrive. I'm afraid of the answer though. The producers understand that the viewing audience in the US can't/won't handle intelligent, well written (yes...using "big" words) shows. They'd rather have the other kind of show; game shows; disfunctional family shows; "reality" programs. I clearly remember high quality comedy programs: Dick Van Dyke; Mary Tyler Moore; MASH; and i'm not some angry old guy; I just miss high quality programming.....
If West Wing never ended, we couldn't have gotten The Newsroom. The creative effort to keep a show going must be overwhelming. It's the circle of life!
This was the conclusion the writer had thought of. The shows that go for as long as they do are the one's that have an incredible amount of pathways they can take the story. Like Seinfeld. Seinfeld was literally a show about nothing, but they created a bunch of characters and gave them scenarios that each of their personalities could react to. In a show like the Newsroom, the writers and producers had a story they wanted to tell. Beginning, middle, end. Everything on this show was already planned out and kudos to Sorkin and his associates for sticking to it. Could they have continued this show and had decent ratings? Of course. But Sorkin made sure that it ended on the highest note possible in his mind, and what better mind to trust than the guy who created the work.
I've read some really intelligent and insightful critiques of Newsroom. But I'm not a TV critic or a movie critic. Although, I can be critical :) The thing about this show and particularly the first and last season is that it was fantastic! and I just loved it. This last season was, to me, sensational. I fell in love with nearly all the characters, even the "villains" like the G-man guy. Everyone was just so lovable. Do we fall in love with the finest people? Well, often no. So whether or not this was as great a show as I think it was, I enjoyed it immensely and it is among my absolute favorites of all time.
This show made me sad... It made me sad that the US has the news show it deserves lives only in a made-up story It made me sad that not having HBO, I found about this show too late to follow it when it was on the air It made me sad that they killed the Character of Charlie Skinner It made me sad that it ended too soon. GRR! Another of Sorkin's masterpieces doomed to have a rather low run-life! Don't get me wrong making it to three seasons in today's climate, especially considering the subject matter, is astounding. I always find myself coming back to the same question. Maybe it's just his writing style that appeals to us or the way he weaves his characters and stories together with such artistry but why don't they endure? Is it really true that there isn't a demand for this type of intellectually stimulating show past it's introduction and initial hype? Why does Big Bang work and this fail? Either way I miss this show greatly!

Will McAvoy getting Neal Sampat's arrest voided. 5. Charlie Skinner furiously dressing down Sloan Sabbith.
1. The entire scene which ends with Leona Lansing yelling "Get it back!" 2. When Gabby Giffords get shot and everyone immediately forgets all their worries and gets to work 3. This scene (ending) or The Hospital Scene where Will gets out of bed and rips out his tubes...the Who starts playing. "What is illness to the body of our knight errant?"
I thought the last scene of the show was where the major players realized they're about to do their first show without Charlie, and they realized how instrumental he was in getting them to where they were:motivated, committed, honorable journalists. And now they really start to understand how much they are going to miss him, and that his legacy is that they keep going. You could see that in Will's face, in Don's face, in McKenzie's too The classy way to end a great series
Would be so amazing if HBO did a follow up series taking place during the circus that was American journalism between 2016 and 2020 and beyond. Will, Mac, Don, Sloan, Jim, Maggie, Neil, etc would all still be there doing what they do best.
Now, more than anything now after finishing all 3 seasons of The Newsroom, is to see a Newsroom arch/season going over Donald Trump, Hiliary Clinton and the presidential race of 2016. It's funny, never really paid attention to the news or the biases news corporations may have. But after watching all 3 seasons, it really made me think and consider everything and all the facts. If only WIll existed and interviewed both Trump and Clinton on their policies; that would be a debate to remember
You know, I keep seeing comments on these videos about how much this show would fit in today and how people miss it. Maybe if we did a petition and patreon campaign, we could get it on netflix or something...
I wish that it finished at the end of the broadcast for two reasons. So we could see the tribute to Charlie, and so we could finish with good night instead of good evening

Dai1lest Op Sorkin was having issues with writing story and plot, and felt Season 2 would be a good ending point, but HBO convinced him to come back with a shorter 3rd season
I feel like the finale episode might or might not intensionally designed to get you back to the first episode again like IMMEDIATELY. In that sense, as much as I'm sad that this amazing show only got 25 episodes, the finale loops you back to the start where you will probably start watching again up until the finale again, and so on :(
I love that Aaron Sorkin slapped all news media in the face. When did ratings and kissing advertisers butts come before getting it right? Come on boys and girls make journalism respectable again!
I just wish this show to be prolonged... ;( But I know that this show was too great not be ended that fast. What else could the storytellers give us? I know that the great shows when are prolonged becoming worse.. Maybe that's why it is ended 7 years ago... I was a big fan.

Wow, if you're going to criticize the writing, at least watch the show first. There's an earlier scene at the wake where Will inadvertently lets the cat out of the bag to Tess, Kendra and another girl. They obviously told Sorority Girl and she pretended she didn't know.

I am sick and tired of people hyping this show up to the high heavens. It's not as good as its first scene. I am upset about all the good shows that were cancelled, and even more upset about bad shows that go on and on... But The Newsroom ending this early is not exactly that upsetting for me.

Fucking chills down my spine. The last season wasn't as amazing as the others but the ending just kills me every time.
I wish they would continue this show
honestly we would all love it if they made a reboot to the newsroom or something like it, something that bashes in the right places and tells it in the same way newsroom told the narrative..
We sure need the Newsroom today.

Dai1lest Op Sorkin was having issues with writing story and plot, and felt Season 2 would be a good ending point, but HBO convinced him to come back with a shorter 3rd season

I feel like the finale episode might or might not intensionally designed to get you back to the first episode again like IMMEDIATELY. In that sense, as much as I'm sad that this amazing show only got 25 episodes, the finale loops you back to the start where you will probably start watching again up until the finale again, and so on :(
I love that Aaron Sorkin slapped all news media in the face. When did ratings and kissing advertisers butts come before getting it right? Come on boys and girls make journalism respectable again!

I just wish this show to be prolonged... ;( But I know that this show was too great not be ended that fast. What else could the storytellers give us? I know that the great shows when are prolonged becoming worse.. Maybe that's why it is ended 7 years ago... I was a big fan.

I always took it as her saying "Everyone knows" because no one actually knows, but she plans to tell everyone and wishes not to be held accountable later. It's a joke. A silly one.
+Max Palombella If I remember correctly, the staff had already figured out that Mac was pregnant but had no confirmation, so my interpretation of the scene is that the girl really was surprised but she already had heard the rumor, so she knows that the others know. (sorry for my english, is not the best)

Wow, if you're going to criticize the writing, at least watch the show first. There's an earlier scene at the wake where Will inadvertently lets the cat out of the bag to Tess, Kendra and another girl. They obviously told Sorority Girl and she pretended she didn't know.

I am sick and tired of people hyping this show up to the high heavens. It's not as good as its first scene.
I am upset about all the good shows that were cancelled, and even more upset about bad shows that go on and on...
But The Newsroom ending this early is not exactly that upsetting for me.
Perfect ending
