He pretty much stole every scene he was in during this show. He should have won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor. Great actor and still nailing it into his 70s. We should all be so fortunate.

@Matthew Huszarik I know Aaron Sorkin wrote it, I love his work. Unfortunately when I read reviews etc it is clear lots of people downright hated it because they felt it was too "preachy" (I think at least a few just had a guilty conscience and others couldn't live with the fact that it basically told them "stop fooling yourself, USA is NOT the greatest country")

The real shame is that, in the real world, Charlie's obit might not even make the news ... though somehow, I suspect that Will McAvoy will make a point of noting Charlie's passing.

I just had a real flash moment here, a REAL big bang moment in my head.
The problem isn't with the News Companies, it's with us. I mean, yeah the problems also with the news companies, but as the majority of us don't work for news companies the majority of us only have control over us, and we're even more to blame.
Recently I learned a little about market forces. If you didn't know, Market Forces are forces that manipulate the market. To add a bit of detail to that, they're the forces that determine whether certain things more or less valuable in any given market.
So as an example... in the news, the market forces come from the viewers at the moment. Sure it's possible that a News Anchor could go rouge along with the rest of his division for moral reasons, but as is shown in Newsroom they will lose hundreds of thousands of viewers for it. Thus, the News Corporation logically can't make a truly proactive first step without being smashed down, seeing as the money a News Corporation makes comes from it's viewers.
We, on the other hand, have absolutely NOTHING stopping us. What we watch and what we care about IS our decision. Yes certain people are brought up and formed a certain way by society, but if they believe they are morally bankrupt and disagree with who they are they CAN change with zero practical negative concequence. That is to say, there is no financial or physical barrier.
The only barrier is mental, and that's one a News Corporation would have to overcome anyway, so to ask for a News Program like The Newsroom to exist in reality is asking people to 1) Potentially lose their jobs to do the right thing, 2) Willingly reduce the number of people who watch the news from their channel which has tremendous mental effect and 3) Risk very real death threats, potential attacks and public dismay.
And all we have to do is turn off the fucking gossip column we were reading and actually do some research into some facts that interest us. If those don't exist, all we have to do is look over the internet and find something that exists in reality we think needs more views for moral reasons, and if you reading this truly believes you cannot do either of those things you have to hand in your realist card. You're nothing but a pessimist now, and if you had the choice... optimism or pessimism really?
It's not about EVERYONE DOING THE NEWS WELL.
It's about everyone who watched and agreed with the Newsroom, no matter how few of us there are, doing what we can in whatever fields we pursue, no matter how seemingly inconsequential to make the world a better and more moral place for us and those we care about.
You write fiction? Good! Write to get people to ask questions about the setting and the characters that can get them to think more openly about reality.
You work as a policeman? Good! Maybe give the guy the benefit of the doubt in cases where morally, you think that's the way to go, even if it's dangerous.
It's about carrying your ideals through in what you do in both your working life and your personal life, not despite what you do in both your working life and your personal life. See Nina Howard deleting the Osama Bin Laden high on the air text from will as a big example, as well as Will McAvoy fighting against radical fundamentalism within the party he wants to respect despite the pressure that must put on his own self image as a republican.
I can do better, and so can you. So lets do it.
You wanna know how I've started to do that since I saw this show?
    I just decided to.

Same with elections. When we stop feeding the horse-race coverage of the primary election 'clown car' and, instead show some respect, some NEED for the smart, experienced, qualified but possibly less marketable candidates, we'll get better results. The 2008 election was an aberration in a long, recent trend toward dumber, less articulate, less qualified, less inspiring but highly saleable candidates. With the rise in television and it's influence on us, has come a corresponding drop in our attention span, our interest and our ability to participate in democracy. This was compounded by the 24 hour news cycle and compounded again by the rise of non-journalist online 'news' and email spam factories (pronounced 'Breitbart').
Edward R. Murrow must be rolling over in his grave.
All of this information, everywhere, facts available on virtually any topic with a few seconds' search and nobody, least of all certain candidates for public office (pronounced 'Trump") have any FACTS!

if only people in the US had realized what you just realized a bit sooner this year, maybe the US presidential election would've turned otherwise. Hell, maybe progress would have won over elite and dumb people one more time... Now the sane and educated part of the US can only act not to let elections turn that bad again. Even better, actually EDUCATE the other half.

    • @roddaman7545
      @roddaman7545 8 років тому

It's a challenging proposition, educating 'the other half' since they are equally convinced that it's THIS half that needs the education. There is so much hatred, scorn and malice on that end it enables them to brush past any of the obvious contradictions like Bush deleting 2.5 million emails is OK but Hillary deleting less than 1% of that is a horrid crime, for which she should be 'locked up'.
It's the same problem here as it is in Iraq or Afghanistan; for democracy to work the process has to be the priority, not the results. If people start thinking that lying about issues to the degree Trump does is OK, if you win, then we are sunk, truly. The recent malfeasance by the NC state legislature will seem like a pebble in the landslide of manipulations and overt corruption that will follow, if people decide winning excuses any means required by that win.

Sam Waterston as the crotchety, bourbon-drinking news department head, Charlie Skinner.

Just superb, and his Charlie Skinner's whispering in my ear every time I write copy or research a piece for my buddy Kenny Pick's lovely, goofy Internet radio news program. It didn’t get that because Aaron Sorkin said after West Wing he’d never do a TV series longer than three years. And HBO decided not to make the same mistake as NBC did with West Wing and keep it going once Sorkin was gone.

I love this show. Most especially the opening scene with the sorority girl. This show had a lot of great moments. If there was a problem with it, then it was only this. It was written for an intelligent audience. And by definition intelligent people will always be in the minority. No show can last long in hollywood, by playing to a minority of potential viewers. It is always more profitable to cater to the larger crowd.

    • @Wolverines77

And the fact that their real world story line ran into the "brick wall" and would have to be written for fictional events. Then add the year 3 quandary. How were they going to extend every single persons contract, actors and production staff, when everyone there was AAA talent. I think Mr. Sorting did the best thing possible by closing down after the third season instead of going down the path of diminishing values and product for the following 7 years until the death spiral event horizon was eclipsed...

Will is only a face and anchor for ACN but it is a Charlie who perfectly maipulated everybody from the start.

As a journalist, people have been trying to discredit us for centuries. Kings used to execute messengers who brought them bad news. Today, it’s Republicans trying to discredit us for reporting facts that contradict everything they say. And I don’t know much, but I do know this: journalists will still be around to do the important work of informing the public long after Trump and his MAGA movement have been discredited and rendered irrelevant.
