    Having watched many of your informative video’s I feel a two-way friendship, and with that spirit I offer the following with your permission. My automotive instructor would say--- “Don’t tell the customer you’re going to take apart his carburetor. Say you are going to dis-assemble and re-assemble his carburetor.” I am glad the parts tray replaced the attention grabbing and actually distracting set of wrenches in this recording. Finally, it seems the hard surface of your wooden work tile does not scratch the surface of reels. A towel can help in that regard, and keep the small parts from rolling off. Thanks for posting.

      Thank you for the tips Hashem - Old habits die hard and you are correct, the earlier videos used a different camera that could not focus in on the project, so you got the wrenches and other stuff. My newer camera helps me get closer to the action. Best wishes - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackle Than you for the kind reply. As my old friend says "the biggest room in the world, is the room for improvement.". Totally agree with the "old habits die hard". Being a mature (old) man myself.

    Another quality Dennis. Everybody makes mistakes that’s what makes us human. Just the fact that you video and go back and make sure you correct everything shows your work ethic. I’ve sent reels out before to get serviced and have them come back no better from a manufacturer at that. I am a little concerned after watching your video because I purchased one of those reels in the mc version 5 yrs ago.I’ve used it once or twice because I didn’t like the way it felt geary right out of the box.Now that I’ve seen this video I really don’t like it after seeing the way the drag is designed I really don’t think that’s a good design. Seems like a way for the company to make money having non- replaceable washers

      Good point, but I have only seen one out of a whole lot of these reels, where the drag was the problem. And that one never got any love or TLC at all. If you normally service the reel, then that drag should last and last. Don't worry it - Dennis

    You installed the anti reverse pawl backwards. The correct orientation is seen at 6:15. It is backwards at 16:00.
    I've owned a bunch of avet's and the pinion bearing and dry drags are the weak points on these reels. I always grease my drags with Cal's grease, then wipe dry. Even when I stay within the advertised max drags the pinion bearings still fail over time. I replace them with Boca hybrid cermaic bearings and get a lot more life out of them. They are very nice reels but need to be stripped downed and cleaned annually.

      Thank you - I will go back and check. I am waiting on a replacement spool as the drag was really chewed up. I will re do the anti reverse then. - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackle Cool. It's easy to do. If there's any coffee grinder feeling when turning the handle with drag applied then the pinion bearing needs to be replaced. This the most common failure on Avets by far. I was having to replace these every year until I started buying higher quality boca beaings. Avets are not the smoothest reals due to the stainless gears but you'll know when you get the coffee grinder feel. It gets worse as you apply more drag. If I was servicing someone's real, especially an old one like that, I would go ahead and replace the pinion bearing, they're cheap through Avet. Getting them out is fun though. You have to heat the outside of the pinion bearing housing and slam it down on a hard surface to get it out. There are how to videos on youtube. But of there's no coffee grinder feel under moderate drag then it's good, maybe just pack some new grease in it.....

    Great video! I have an sx 6/4 Raptor that I’m replacing all the bearings with ceramic bearings. However the drag bearing is corroded and stuck to the reel body. The gear is also corroded to the bearing! Any idea how I can get the corroded bearing and gear out? I have tried tapping it and penetrating oil with no luck! Thanks, Rick

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      That sounds like a tough one with all of the corrosion. You may need to get a new side plate and start over. You can try to heat the gear shaft briefly with plumbers torch for about 20 seconds or so. If you do, please be careful not to burn the reel or yourself. Heat should help break up the rusted parts if all else has failed. It is the last resort - Dennis

    Great video Dennis! I worked on the older SX 51 for a buddy of mine. Was surprised at how rather simple it was. Did notice that the gearing was a bit "rough" and noisy. I read similar stories on a few forums as well. Seems to be due to the way the gears are "cut". Great reel though. Also, try a small piece of tape to hold the line on the spool. This way you won't have to worry about it getting stuck behind the spool when reinstalling. Works for me.

    I have a sxj, which is just the narrow version of this reel. My favorite 20-25lb(line) class reel for school sized tuna . Can do 30 in a pinch.
    You just shouldn't fish them past 9lb of drag for very long or often. It will crunch a bearing eventually. The 2nd generations you can fish the drag harder. I have put cals drags grease on my drag. Many people have without having issues. Personal preference.

      These are great reels as long as they are maintained. This one got left on the boat a few too many seasons between service intervals. They are powerhouses for the form factor.

      Sooo many people take an original SX, throw 50lb braid on it and think it's appropriate. They then blame Avet when a bearing fails or reeling becomes stiffer. Drives me crazy people spend $200-$300+ on a reel that they don't understand how to use.. I fish my G2 MXL at about 10-12lbs of drag at strike with 30lb line and up to a 40lb topshot and my SXJ at 7-8lbs at strike with 20lb line and up to a 30lb topshot. I even see UA-cam channels spooling 50-65 even 80lb line on SX's. The funny part is Avet makes an SX sized reel in the Raptor that you can fish 50lb comfortably with. I've caught 120+lb tuna on an MXL Raptor with 50lb hollow and a 60lb topshot and it's a blast using such a small reel for such big fish. People just need to realize what they're designed to do.

    Unfortunate to see this. These reels are quite bullet proof if taken care of at all and are very well machined and made in the US. I fish my personal Avet reels heavy but I also have this exact reel, the basic first generation SX that I have guests fish who beat it to hell usually. Once a year maintenance and it's going on ten years now. I've had big mahi, yellowfin, king mackerel, etc., caught on mine from guests and it's flawless still. Talking 60+ pound yellowfin. The only thing I have ever replaced on an Avet reel are the spool bearings which will get raspy over time.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 роки тому

      Yeah. I understand that these became "guest" reels a few seasons ago and the owner didn't take the time to have them serviced regularly. A little bit of servicing would have prevented this. Still, replace the spool and pressure plate and it will keep on going for a long time - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackle guest reels need love too! I service all my reels at the same time, the ones I use personally and the ones everyone else on my boat uses. No matter if I use it or my friends use it, replacement parts cost the same and the reels don't go down in price if I tell a manufacturer it's a guest reel. Just a shame to me, it's taken a lot of seasons of no maintenance to get that reel looking that way! You're right though, it could be back in 100% business easily.

    Also there's a shim in your milk jug that got left out when you reassembled the reel. You can see it at 19:00. This shim goes on the spool bearing, under the spring at 12:15. It should go spool bearing, shim, spring, shim, pressure plate bearing......

    THeres a chance it would have been helpful to buff that pressure plate with a dremel tool to get all that burnt drag material off to would improve that smooooth drag reel.
