Been upholstering since 1985 , bit sometimes it’s just nice to,watch others doing it and I’m still learning bits many years later. the info on the tightening of the springs at the beginning was really useful. Lovely upholstering, think you might need to treat yourself to a Bambi silent air compressor though! Mine is perfect for my small garage workshop. When it kicks in, it is as quiet as a fridge. Hope business is ruining good for you, I’m always booking 12 weeks ahead !

These types of tasks are fascinating for any lover of furniture design and it's something that can be extremely useful in many situations. For example, I love leather sofas, but this time my wife and I decided to go with a Ducaroy sofa fabric boucle that we ordered from Manhattan Home Design because we loved the pristine white hue of its finish, but if we decide to switch back to leather some day, I hope I can do it myself. Thanks for the tutorial!
The details in this video are so helpful! After watching I gained a better understanding of how to reupholster my couch. This was so helpful, the steps and order of doing things in particular, I'm about to start the arms and would have done them wrong if I had not watched this! Being a Londoner I also appreciate the accent and humour, so many of these tutorials are dull dull dull but you're a geezer!

Very informative and engaging video , 5 🌟 , would be better to watch if you would use exposure lock on your camera as it keeps adjusting itself during recording. I had the same issue as my phone did not have exposure lock feature, but i downloaded the app and it works well now. Good luck mate

What you’ve called “Selvage” is just called “bulk” in the US. Here (and I believe there), “selvage” is the *side of the fabric weave where the shuttle turns around, usually strengthened to stay straight. YMMV

Great video. From start to finish, I would have liked to have seen how you copied the fabric pattern for the couch arms and then sewed the new fabric together. They were finished very nicely but I would have liked to have seen exactly how you did that. Do you have another video from your library that shows how you make and sew couch arms?

How much would that cost? I want to keep my corner sofa as it's the perfect size & shape for my lounge, plus it's the most comfortable thing i have ever sat and laid on. But it's brown and won't suit the room when I complete the decorating.

This is good shit… I want to upgrade my couch cushions. My wife insists we buy a new couch but she doesn’t realize she’s complaining about the crap foam that came with it. There’s no support. You sit and the cushion compresses like crazy. I gotta research how to build cushions

What type of fabric is the black fabric used between the bottom cushions and the frame? You added 6+ inches of the couch fabric and then hand stitched to the frame. Thanks!
So I have a 4 section recliner that I need reupholstered. Called around a few places for quotes. $2500 just for labor, plus the cost of padding and fabric. Can someone help me understand why it’s less expensive to just buy a new sofa?🤷♂️
Hi Bernie. Its because most cheap furniture nowadays is imported and they are made in factories where they cut major corners on quality. They also use cheap materials and aren't made to last longer than 5 years. 🙏⛏️📎✂️📐🧵
Hi Sarah! You don’t have to change all of the padding if it doesn’t need it - we replace foam if it needs it and re-pad as a standard service but if the foam is new and doesn’t need any re-padding, you can just recover 😊👍🏻
Hi Semo, cushions that are sewn in are a lot more difficult as they all have to be sewn in as one piece, and it involves taking a lot of fabric off to get to the seats. If you are going too attempt this always follow the original patterns. 👍🙏📎✂️📐⛏️🧵

This couch project is something that I'm looking at out on the horizon somewhere so I'm just trying to get my head around how to upholster. I could potentially just use detached pillows on the reupholster. Probably would simplify the job. It is a sectional coach so I figured they used attached pillows to more easily keep them in place.
Great stuff, but I find it discouraging to even try to do this myself. I have no idea how you got those measurements to match up. If I did that it would be completely screwed up and I would end up throwing my arms in the air and duct taping the whole thing.

Been thinking of redoing a couch that has sat around for 7 years in storage. It’s not a old couch and it already has sentimental value. Just needs a face lift to clean it up.
Do you absolutely have to remove the back and sides of the sofa to pull the fabric for recovering arms and seat through? For instance, if I have a sofa that the only thing that needs replacing is the seat and the rest is going to be left the same? Or the only thing to replace is the side and the rest left alone? I like the look of a seat that is permanent and tacked using nailhead trim as well.
Would you say that stapling is legit? Not in anyway a criticism (I have no clue) but I keep reading online about stapling being wrong - but you're blantantly a professional and some of those attachments I can't see how you could do anything but staple them? (Great content btw, I've subscribed)
Hi Holly! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing, it means a lot 😊 In the early days of upholstery they used to use tacks and a hammer to secure fabric on furniture. However, for more modern furniture - upholsterers tend to use an air gun and staples. Upholsterers do still use the old techniques (like stitch and stuff) to reupholster traditionally upholstered furniture. I hope this is helpful and my ramblings make sense 🤣

You mentioned piecing fabric, is there a specific place/way this should be done? Also, if I use upholstery velvet do I need to cut my pieces with the velvet going all the same way? Thanks :)
Hi Ellenarae! Thank you for watching my videos, I’m glad you find them helpful 😊 So there’s a couple of options you could do with the outside back if you can’t get it out of one width - firstly you could run the fabric, which means turning it so the pile goes side to side instead of down...however, like you asked, if you do this the rest of the pieces you cut should all be going the same way with the pile otherwise you run the risk of the fabric looking different colours or shades. Secondly, you could sew a seam down the middle of the outside pack if you don’t want to run the fabric sideways. Finally, you could use a full width on the back and then piece two smaller even sized pieces of fabric either end...again, you’d sew those and would have two seams. It just depends what you find easier and what look you’d rather have! I hope this makes sense and is helpful 😊👍🏻

What kind of material should i use for the lining (the black fabric you used) and when you sew the front deck strip to the lining fabric are you sewing the hessian webbing to the bottom of those as well and leaving the ends long to staple down? then when it comes to fitting you put on the front deck strip, flap over the lining fabric, staple down the hessian and then lash through all three layers (just behind the seam line?), Hope that makes sense! Is it easy for an upholsterer to put new longer legs on a sofa? Also, do upholsterers normally pick up from you and deliver your sofa when it’s done? Great video! I love the tee-off effects!
Hi! Yes you are able to change the legs on a sofa as long as the blocks in the corners of the sofa are big enough to fit the new legs. Yes normally upholsterers should collect and deliver your sofa to you as part of the service. Great videos and thanks for the tool list with links With the price of sofas at the moment, as I worked with an upholsterer for a few weeks some 30 years ago - my wife wants me to look at building a bespoke ‘basic’ sofa for an awkward space and a large family… Have you got any advice on material ( I’m currently looking at eBay! ) and foam ( I’m looking a durafoam on eBay as Leicester shops are very expensive) Also, what are your thoughts on using mdf for the frame. The frame will be square and low. Cheers.
Hi Darren! I would normally make our sofa frames out of solid beech wood but it doesn’t stop those hightstreet brands from making theirs out of MDF, chipboard and the like with a little bit of hardwood thrown in for the odd support 😉 so it can be done but I would be thrown in upholstery jail if I recommended you do it 🤣 I get all my sundries from Martin’s and Livedale (if you’re in the UK) Fabrics I get from upholstery fabric suppliers but you tend to need accounts with them to order from them (and are trade only). But as long as the fabric you buy is upholstery fabric - you should be good. Hope this helps 😊👍🏻

My camel back sofa has a cotton cover directly over the foam. Can I use the existing cover as a liner for the final cover?

What type of fabric is the black fabric used between the bottom cushions and the frame? You added 6+ inches of the couch fabric and then hand stitched to the frame. Thanks!
Hi Tami - I used black lining fabric on the seat, which was sewn to the upholstery fabric. I hope that helps!

So I have a 4 section recliner that I need reupholstered. Called around a few places for quotes. $2500 just for labor, plus the cost of padding and fabric. Can someone help me understand why it’s less expensive to just buy a new sofa?🤷♂️
Hi Bernie. Its because most cheap furniture nowadays is imported and they are made in factories where they cut major corners on quality. They also use cheap materials and aren't made to last longer than 5 years. 🙏⛏️📎✂️📐🧵

if i’m wanting to change just the material (cover) on the outside do i still need to do all the padding, etc from the beginning of the video?
Hi Sarah! You don’t have to change all of the padding if it doesn’t need it - we replace foam if it needs it and re-pad as a standard service but if the foam is new and doesn’t need any re-padding, you can just recover 😊👍🏻

How do you handle the cushions that sewn into the back of the couch?
Hi Semo, cushions that are sewn in are a lot more difficult as they all have to be sewn in as one piece, and it involves taking a lot of fabric off to get to the seats. If you are going too attempt this always follow the original patterns. 👍🙏📎✂️📐⛏️🧵

This couch project is something that I'm looking at out on the horizon somewhere so I'm just trying to get my head around how to upholster. I could potentially just use detached pillows on the reupholster. Probably would simplify the job. It is a sectional coach so I figured they used attached pillows to more easily keep them in place.
Great stuff, but I find it discouraging to even try to do this myself. I have no idea how you got those measurements to match up. If I did that it would be completely screwed up and I would end up throwing my arms in the air and duct taping the whole thing.

Do you absolutely have to remove the back and sides of the sofa to pull the fabric for recovering arms and seat through?
For instance, if I have a sofa that the only thing that needs replacing is the seat and the rest is going to be left the same? Or the only thing to replace is the side and the rest left alone?
I like the look of a seat that is permanent and tacked using nailhead trim as well.

Would you say that stapling is legit? Not in anyway a criticism (I have no clue) but I keep reading online about stapling being wrong - but you're blantantly a professional and some of those attachments I can't see how you could do anything but staple them? (Great content btw, I've subscribed)
Hi Holly! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing, it means a lot 😊 In the early days of upholstery they used to use tacks and a hammer to secure fabric on furniture. However, for more modern furniture - upholsterers tend to use an air gun and staples. Upholsterers do still use the old techniques (like stitch and stuff) to reupholster traditionally upholstered furniture. I hope this is helpful and my ramblings make sense 🤣

Your channel has been so helpful, thank you! I want to upholster our two seater slipcover sofa but I don’t think the fabric I want has the width to go across the back in one piece like yours did. You mentioned piecing fabric, is there a specific place/way this should be done? Also, if I use upholstery velvet do I need to cut my pieces with the velvet going all the same way? Thanks :)
Hi Ellenarae! Thank you for watching my videos, I’m glad you find them helpful 😊 So there’s a couple of options you could do with the outside back if you can’t get it out of one width - firstly you could run the fabric, which means turning it so the pile goes side to side instead of down...however, like you asked, if you do this the rest of the pieces you cut should all be going the same way with the pile otherwise you run the risk of the fabric looking different colours or shades. Secondly, you could sew a seam down the middle of the outside pack if you don’t want to run the fabric sideways. Finally, you could use a full width on the back and then piece two smaller even sized pieces of fabric either end...again, you’d sew those and would have two seams. It just depends what you find easier and what look you’d rather have! I hope this makes sense and is helpful 😊👍🏻

What kind of material should i use for the lining (the black fabric you used) and when you sew the front deck strip to the lining fabric are you sewing the hessian webbing to the bottom of those as well and leaving the ends long to staple down? then when it comes to fitting you put on the front deck strip, flap over the lining fabric, staple down the hessian and then lash through all three layers (just behind the seam line?), Hope that makes sense! Is it easy for an upholsterer to put new longer legs on a sofa? Also, do upholsterers normally pick up from you and deliver your sofa when it’s done? Great video! I love the tee-off effects!
Hi! Yes you are able to change the legs on a sofa as long as the blocks in the corners of the sofa are big enough to fit the new legs. Yes normally upholsterers should collect and deliver your sofa to you as part of the service. With the price of sofas at the moment, as I worked with an upholsterer for a few weeks some 30 years ago - my wife wants me to look at building a bespoke ‘basic’ sofa for an awkward space and a large family…
Have you got any advice on material ( I’m currently looking at eBay! ) and foam ( I’m looking a durafoam on eBay as Leicester shops are very expensive)
Also, what are your thoughts on using mdf for the frame. The frame will be square and low.

Hi Darren! I would normally make our sofa frames out of solid beech wood but it doesn’t stop those hightstreet brands from making theirs out of MDF, chipboard and the like with a little bit of hardwood thrown in for the odd support 😉 so it can be done but I would be thrown in upholstery jail if I recommended you do it 🤣
I get all my sundries from Martin’s and Livedale (if you’re in the UK) Fabrics I get from upholstery fabric suppliers but you tend to need accounts with them to order from them (and are trade only). But as long as the fabric you buy is upholstery fabric - you should be good. Hope this helps 😊👍🏻
