So sorry you had to battle the dreaded root mealybug Ana, they really are a nightmare pest, especially when they get up inside the plant like that. You got some lovely new plants there, love the Thelocactus, none of mine bloomed this year but hopefully next year they will 😊 Thank you for sharing with us as always Ana, from Edith & myself, have a wonderful Sunday 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜
Mealies - one of our mortal enemies! I hate them to the core. I know everything has a purpose on this earth but i wonder if they have a purpose aside from making a gardener’s life miserable. 😆 Good idea though, combating the loss with getting a replacement oh and more! 🥰 Gorgeous plants and awesome additions to your collection, Ana. ❤️👍🌺🌼🌸❤️
Fall and winter is my mealy bugs season here. But this is the first time I got them in the roots. Ugh! They were big ones, too. 😦 I want to spray all my plants with alcohol but I need to find alcohol first in the stores. They are like gold these days. They sell alcohol here as sanitizers but they are the ones from the distilleries. They smell like tequila! Will those work for plants? Any suggestions, Daz and Edith?
@@CactusCaffeine in our experience, anything stronger than 70% alcohol is detrimental to plants. They’ll burn. Tequila in the US is 70-110. Unfortunately, unless you get systemics, you will never get rid of those peskies 100%. 😫
I already watered with systemic once. But since it is now colder here, I am starting to withhold watering. I usually water an infected plant 3x with systemic. Yeah, the distillery alcohol smells strong. But if I don’t find any regular alcohol, I just might have to dilute it with more water. Already saw some mealies in 2 other cacti. This is war! 😠😉
@@CactusCaffeine I wouldn’t personally use isopropyl alcohol that’s higher than 70%, not neat anyway. Unfortunately when you get root mealies you’ve two options, using a long lasting systemic that works against mealybugs or, if they’ve not eaten their way into the plant body, is to cut the entire root system off like I had to do with my Aloe and Gymnocalycium and re-root them. I know the feeling when you get these pests on your plants, it’s very annoying. Hope you manage to get rid of them Ana 👍🏻🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜☕️
Lovely new plants to lessen the tragedy of losing some. During the week when some of my family visited, one of my grandchildren asked me for a cacti for his bedroom window sill. He chose a lovely Rebutia with three yellow flowers and more buds to open. How wonderful and then Messaged me later to chose more ....isn’t it wonderful! He is 14 and the second one of my 7 grandchildren to take an interest. Hello from Australia, we are slowly getting more sun as spring returns. Keep an eye on those pesky Mealy bugs.
That is wonderful! I like that the younger generation are gaining more interest in nature. I feel like with all the new technologies, teens and kids nowadays spend less time outdoors. Happy spring to you, exciting days ahead. 😊
It's a rule, for every cactus you lose, you have to replace it with 3. So guys, your spouse needs to be aware of this rule. Just kidding, but it would be a good excuse to buy more cactus wouldn't it? Tee Hee.
The one thing that I have found that (gradually) eradicates mealybugs is Bonide's Systemic Granulars Insect Control. I sprinkle some evenly over the top of the soil/dressing which allows a little bit of it to be dissolved and absorbed into the plant each watering cycle. I originally started with only the plants that had visible mealybugs but eventually just added it to all the succulents and cacti to ensure the mealybugs couldn't just migrate from plant to plant. I haven't had any mealybugs for a couple of years now and continue to use the product to maintain that clean state.
Your new Cacti are all absolutely BEAUTIFUL Ana :-D and Mealy bugs are such a pain for us cactus lovers, and root mealies are the worst argh I hate them, I had a case of awful root mealies a few years ago on my very old Astro myristigma and they ate inside the cactus and hollowed it out, I was so sad, as it was just a shell and looked normal on the outside, but it was unsaveable, Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful new additions to your incredible plant family, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a fantastic Monday today XXXXX

Those pesky critters! I hope your nice purchases cheered you up. Sometimes I forget that root mealies exist. I’ve been fortunate in avoiding them for the most part. Unfortunately, that means that I don’t check for them in a timely manner when a plant is in trouble. If a sick plant has no obvious problems above ground we need to remember to take it out of the pot and inspect the roots. Doing so may shock the weakened plant but it quite possibly could save its life when we discover the cause of its misery.

I’m a fan of your channel. I really love succulents but I have a very small space in my house. I hope you can also visit my small garden and give me some advice. Will be greatly appreciated.
Pls try to make your video shorter :)
