    I used a heat mat for the first time last spring. I made an incubation chamber out of an old transparent Sterilite tote about 26" x 18" x 6 1/2". I laid a 1/4"sheet of plywood in the bottom of the tote, then the mat over that, and another sheet of plywood over that. I drilled four ventilation holes in the lid and a large hole in the bottom back wall to allow for the plug. I hung a pair of 50 Watt UFO grow lights several inches over the incubator, timed for a 12 hour day. I planted my seeds in 5" bulb pans with plastic wrap stretched over the top. Before planting my seeds, I moistened the soil well, wrapped the pot well in plastic wrap and put them in the microwave for two minutes. This generated enough steam to sterilize the soil. The plastic wrap blew up like a balloon from the steam, then collapsed when the steam cooled. If I had left the pot in any longer the balloon might have popped, but at two minutes it was okay. . With this method, I did not get that offensive odor that often comes from sterilizing soil in the oven. To preserve sterility, I left the wrapping plastic on the pot until it was room temperature and I was ready to sow seed. Before sowing the seed, I labeled the pot with species and date sown. I use a P-Touch labeler for this. It makes a waterproof label that can be easily removed after you take the plants out of the pot. Then I removed the plastic, sowed the seed, settled it in with a spray of clean water and covered the top of the pot with fresh plastic wrap. I secured the wrap with a rubber band around the rim and trimmed the excess away. Then placed the pots in the incubator. I left a thermometer/ hygrometer inside the incubator to keep track of the temperature. My room temperature ranged from 70 to 80 degrees F. The temperature inside the incubator ranged from 90 to 100 degrees. I got various results in germination, maybe because some of my seeds were several years old. One thing I noticed was that with the bottom heat, the pots dried out from the bottom first. You need to set the pots on saucers and watch carefully, or the pots can go dry long before slow sprouting cactus seeds can germinate. If they get too dry, just pour some water in the saucer.
    With this setup, I was able to germinate; Bursera laxiflora, Echinocactus polycephalus, Cleistocactus straussi, and Mimosa Pudica.

    Oh wow so many and all beautiful cacti 😍🤩 it’s nice to see them all. And all your arrangements, dish garden and those on the big cacti garden oh wow i love seeing them all the time in your videos. You’ve got a very nice paper spine cactus, mine are small, and the gymno, super ganda, as you know I’m a gymno addict hahaha. I don’t like opuntia but I do like the purple one like that one on your last cacti garden you showed, i just love the color. My tiny one surviving santa rita pad is just inside the house because the main plant died in the winter that lived in the greenhouse, lucky to save one tiny pad. I already stopped watering my cacti and will resume watering in April. Wow super wow tlga gustong gusto ko mga cactus mo lalo malalaki. Great tips as well on those who doesn’t have idea what to do in preparation for winter. 💚🌵

    Hi Ana🤗, how beautiful is your garden now😍! Must be a bit sad to change things for winter. Here in SE Spain I don't make too much changes for wintering as I have most of my delicate ones under shelves that protect from rain, wind or frost and that shelves have the option to put a plastic cover. But I start now to do a deep cleaning too and I have lots of transplaning for this week and the next because I have a lot of growing in autumn. It's been beautiful to see everything. Have a nice day 😘☮️🌵💗🌺

    Informative video Ana 👍👌😊, enjoyed seeing all the cactus... I use heat mats under my Propagator trays and use lids where needed (think you watched one of my videos a little while ago)
    If your chosen area/room is a minimum of (I personally think this) at least maintained at constant 20°Celsius... about 70°F (ish), then you wouldn't necessarily need heat mats but some seeds like a little higher heat (I keep my heat mat set to a few degrees higher than mentioned) . I love using my heat mats, but you can get those heat mats that are also waterproof so you would literally just lay the heat mat out and position your pots or tubs directly onto it, therefore you don't have to attach it to the underside of a tray if you didn't like the idea of a Propagator tray with lids. Also using JUST a heat mat you can avoid using the clear plastic Propagator lids if you keep your seeds in 'baggies' and sit them onto the heat mat directly,for example. But, using a lidded propagator tray also keeps in the warmth generated by the heat mat creating an ambient micro environment, so there's lots of ways to save money too.
    There's lots of options, but if you get heat mats sold without an integrated thermostat you will need to buy one to regulate to your chosen temperature to avoid unintentional overheating and destroying seeds. Hope this helps.
    😉🌵🌸🌵🌸🌵😁

    Great video Ana!!! I do think you covered all the important points of preparing for winter! Yes we have moved every body inside that needs to be. And yes I've sprayed everything with neem oil and will do so a couple of more times just to be sure, cause as you mentioned , things get packed in pretty tight. I've also cut wood all summer and now I'm ready to heat our plants at the first sign of cold. People think I'm crazy cutting in the summer heat & humidity. But I hate cold, and being from so .California and having lived in Arizona I'm well adapted to heat! Not cold! I dont want to have to cut wood in January🌬❄. I don't know about heat Matt's for starting seeds. I've never used them and had great seed germination in January and February in the house under a light and they came up fine. I know they work well for cuttings. Thanks for sharing this video with us!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks ,out to Las Vegas, have a great evening Ana!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴🌹🌿🌺🍀🌷🌳

    I live in an area of Queensland Australia called jinghi.
    It is really dry and dusty.
    I must bring my cactus inside every night otherwise animals and snakes knock them over. It is time consuming but they are all looking so well. Most are young so I am not expecting much in the flowering department for a while yet. Many I cannot identify properly because I have to buy wherever I can. Distances and COVID 19 make visits to larger nurseries almost impossible.
    Perhaps I should buy through the mail. What do you think?🌵🐎

      California usually has a milder winter. I think they will be fine. I let my greenhouse temperature go down to 35F sometimes. Outside it is usually the cold wind that makes permanent marks on my cactus so wrapping or covering them with something to protect them from cold wind burns is always good.

      Most important is you insulate your greenhouse if your weather goes below freezing levels. You can achieve this by using clear bubble wraps on your walls. If your winter is mild, simply building a structure that blocks cold wind and also protects plants from rain is sufficient. I'm not sure how a dryer hose DIY will perform. I use a space heater which is relatively sold cheap in stores here ($10-$20). Good luck, Tia! 😊🌵☕

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 роки тому

      If it is brown, it might be getting too much sun. Try moving it to a shadier spot. 🙂 But other haworthia produces lots of pups and then the mother plant dies off. If the pups look healthy and green, then it might be due to the second reason.

      Dolores Dionisio I prefer yung organic or natural lang like neem oil, alcohol with soap and water. I only use chemical fungicide or insecticide kapag may infestestation or sakit na po talaga yung plant.
