In this video we look at some fantastic nano fish which are safe for keeping with all species of shrimp in an aquarium. It's important to realise that fish will eat anything they can fit into their mouth and there isn't really a completely shrimp safe fish, except maybe the Otocinclus. My experience with Endler’s is that they won’t actively seek out and attack the adult shrimp, but if they’re hungry enough and an adult swims by, it seems to trigger their prey drive and they go after them!! Keeping them well fed and distracted, as well as providing plenty of cover like you mentioned go a long way! Great video :)
Thank you, for your very honest opinion in deciding on which species of fish are more likely to be safe when keeping ornamental shrimp. I'm in the first week of cycling and despite having experience with saltwater shrimp, I never realized how much more different the two cousins are in regards for me trying to establish an environment that closely resembles their own. Thanks again!
Lampeyes hunt for all my shrimplets, when all the small ones are gone they move up the line and attack in pairs or trio. Dont keep lampeyes with shrimp. Trust me
I’ve found that in a shrimp-only tank (just shrimp and snails) the shrimp populate all levels of the water column, even hanging upside down from the duckweed roots, the presence of any fish (predators) makes them far more likely to stay at bottom to mid levels and explore less… I had a couple baby guppies in my shrimp tank for a while, and the shrimp All generally hid, once I netted out the guppies and returned them to their original tank, the shrimp were out and exploring again…
I just got some green neon tetras that systematically hunted down all the shrimp fry in my tank... Doh! Great looking nano fish though and the juvenile and adult shrimps are fine.. They just hide a lot more now..
I love this video because it shows Caridina shrimp with fish while people only show cherry shrimp with fish. Great to know!!! Have u ever tried khuli loach? I heard they are fine for shrimps.
Thanks for the topic. I have RCS in all three tanks. Only one is called a shrimp tank but it is a misnomer they breed like crazy. Only the Neon Tetras hunt for shrimplets, but lots of plants and they are safe.
I have 1 male endler in both of my shrimp tanks, if I watch for awhile I can see them hunting around, but both tanks still breed (cherry shrimp). Planning on redoing my 20 long and converting the shrimp to there alongside maybe some scarlet badis' and not sure what else. Will also be doing dirted tank, as both shrimp tanks are same. Wish me luck 👍
I would never have anything in my tank that would touch my baby shrimp. After 50+ years of keeping I got sick of fish altogether, I'll stick with my giant army of snails and shrimp
Great video, this really helped but i recently setup a white cloud tank. Do you think white clouds are ok? Ive heard they are sble to fit near adults in their mouths. Anyways, as long as the adults and maybe 1 or 2 of the shrimplets survive, im ok woth it.
U must try heterandria formosa! I'm from Barcelona, Europe, and i got a few of these a year ago. I could'nt be more happy with them. A little quite fish with an espectacular natural look. Love them! Good video, good content, good channel. Keep working! Salutes from Barcelona
barbs are very aggressive. i'd say they are the most aggressive nano fish to your shrimps other than dwarf puffer. tetras are a little bit better but do keep in mind that they also have urge to nip on things other nano fish would deem "too large". remember pirahna is a type of tetra.
I have a betta in a 20 long that coexisted with my shrimp colony for more than a year and then a few months ago he just started going HAAM on adults, starting with the largest (ofc berried females). By the time I realized the colony was collapsing, it was too late. It was nice while it lasted. He _totally_ didn't care about them until recently. Something changed but we're not sure what, as parameters are reasonably stable.
@@angel_loves I learned my lesson and now my new betta is in with what's left of that recovered colony, however they have tons of hiding places, vegetation etc. it's working much better that way
Just curious was that an assassin snail I saw? I wanted one but dropped it from my list because I read they will descend upon cherry shrimp in a fleshy snail crawl of death.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that no fish species are shrimp safe. This should only be viewed as a list of fish species that are less likely to eat your shrimp.
Got a school of ember tetras in my crystal red/ crystal black mix tank, with some Pinocchio shrimp as clean up (they eat hair algae, great nano alternative to amano shrimp). The only problem is that I rarely see my embers, they only come out for food, and only if they can’t see any movement outside of the tank. Any clue why they are so skittish? They are in a school of 11 so that shouldn’t be the problem..
Only certain types of ricefish can tolerate colder temp mainly Oryzias latipes there is another kind but I forgot the name. The rest are from warmer waters outside japan.
I'd disagree on kubotai rasboras and galaxy rasboras, they're both very active species and after a period of not touching anything they will go ham on smaller shrimps and reduce their population in the tank. There are other safe species like clown killifish, smaller pseudomugil (gertrudae, paskai), threadfin rainbowfish, small gobys.
wow, looking through the comments and seeing how many comments about lampeyes feasting on the shrimps...! thats crazy! now, can someone please tell me if hillstream loaches, otocinclus, or dwarf corys are 99.999% safe for my cherry shrimp breeding tank please? (and what about kuhli loaches?)
there are literally zero fish safe with shrimp babies 100%. even oto's would accidently eat a baby now and then, and they're my only fish together with my shrimp. literally all of the fish you mentioned will eat baby shrimps happily.
Which of these would be best for an unheated walstad tank? Heavily planted lo tech. My daughter and I want to get one started. We want shrimp and a couple different fish. Think we are going with 10 gallons.
Jake Brandon yes, he talked about them on the video. Make sure the shrimp you are getting have similar water conditions. Also depending on if you want the shrimps to breed or not, there’s a much longer list. Put some snails and living plants, nitrate and nitrite lvls are gonna be down due to this.
Joan Sandoval my plan is to try white cloud mt minnows with red cherry shrimp. 🦐 I found a guy near me who sells snails and red cherry shrimp. Bowl arrived today. Wish us luck

Thank you for this list! I love when lists include less common options!
Great list! Word of caution, my lampeyes decimated all my shrimplets. They went on a hunting spree

Some betta eat shrimp some don't. You won't know until you put them together. Maybe start with cheap shrimp like cherry shrimp and see what happens
