Cherry AKA neocaridina ....and caridina shrimp come in many different colors and patterns within the aquatic fish and invertebrate Hobby. I will be discussing selective breeding, natural mutations, evolution, camouflage, and the difference between different lineages.
What do those names actually mean at the pet store when you buy a shrimp? Buyer beware, a blue dream and a blue velvet shrimp are not the same thing genetically. Throw in blue topaz along with blue rilis and you're in a world of confusion. Next you have to consider tank mates. and with the pros and cons of each fish, shrimp and if you hope to breed them.

no one has all the answers....I just share what I've picked up and believe to be the case...but with shrimp breeding especially, there are multiple ways and paths genetically to create certain strains .... fish getting along is the same...some shrimp are more wild and agile...others are idiots to be blunt
I have red neocaradina with my pea puffer and the shrimp colony is growing! I have a small deep substrate sand capped setup and tons of Jackfruit leaves. The pea puffer loves snails and live brine shrimp.
Love this combo... plus all the fish will be really healthy with the baby shrimp diet XD, and any thick carpeting plant like dwarf hairgrass will drasticly raise the fry survivability rate... now I have the circle of life song stuck in my head
hahaha totally... I've had a tank where I fed it like every week once.... guppies, shrimp ,snails, scuds, algea and lots of plants.... almost a closed loop. most people dont realize guppies will just eat algea mixed with shrimp and baby guppies haha. ...its really brutal though

Great video, I love all the amazing plants and hiding places. I'm currently breeding Caridina shrimp with 5 Pygmy Corydoras. They seem to ignore even the tiniest shrimplets, clean up all the mess and are super cute to watch as they hover around like hummingbirds.

they can sometimes eat baby shrimp, but not a ton from my experience
I tried neons with my cherry shrimp. The neons wiped out my shrimp population in 3 days.
I have a female Betta living with two cherry shrimp.they get along great.no chasing or biting.she just swim's close to them and check's them out.they share food without any problem.

My chili rasbora are constantly hunting around the bottom of the tank picking at any little spec wedged down in cracks in the substrate and I imagine would make quick lunch of any crawling around baby shrimp. While their mouths are small they are fearless at trying to eat flake food bigger than their body.
Personally I think any of the tetras that completely ignore the substrate like Pristella would be great as long as a baby doesn’t get crazy and decide to swim through the middle of the water column.
That is true in many cases. The bigger impact is just if the fish are wild vs farm raised on prepared food and not live critters honestly. But ive kept several micro rasboras with my shrimp colonies and theyll eat a few babies but not enough that my shrimp still double incolony size every few months

i had a shrimp that was killed by a tetra right in front of my eyes and he just killed it he didndt even eat the shrimp since it didnt fit in its mouth i was so sad 😭

...pretty interesting. good job on the video. I am currently trying to get mine to breed, I have them in a 10 gal tank with a pleco and like 3 platys. I do have alot of java moss tho, so no fish gets inside there.......except; Of course the platys bred and before I realized that thats the reason those baby fish keep goin inside the moss,I have 0 babies that I can see. But I do have few adults, mostly cherry but also couple blue and 1 yellow...so we'll see
My heavily planted aquarium has 20 red cherry shrimp thatlive peacefullye with 8 Zebra Danios, 5 guppies, 8 Harlequin Rasboras, and 11 Ember Tetras. Baby fish survive to adulthood with no intervention.

I was told they do well with arowana’s because they are so small that it’s not worth the arowana’s time.

@Spacey7 it could be the pogostemons stellatus octopus.... or it could be the cluster of narrow leaf java ferns another one is java fern windlov...but yeah dont plant javas in the substrate more than just to anchor 1/3rd the rhizome ....or use lead or wire to tie it to wood

And I had a female betta that was an angel she lived in my yellow neocaridina colony (betta are not recommended but it worked for me)

I had shrimp before fish actually and i have not kept black phantom tetras, but i suspect they would eat a few babies, but swim mid water and top water- away from most small shrimp usually

I had a 20 gal long aquascaped and i wouldnt say heavily planted but I had plants in the back and on the sides and seriyu stone on one side and a piece of driftwood from my shop thats local natural oak (almost petrified-) on the other side and a few plants on each side but completely open in the middle- I live on a dirt road at the dead end with 8 houses on it about 1.5 ac each all on the water in the back and 175 ac of forrest across the dirt road and I found an old run off creek that dried up in some areas like a dessert and the next step would be up to your knees in pluff mud bog and I pulled up a gold mine of oak drift wood, so hard I had to use a diamond blade with water to cut it to fit my tank. -I collect treat and sell it to try and fund my aquatic animal rescue that is the only one within about 400+ mi of my area and one tropical store that mainly deals in saltwater fish- I dont have the funds for that and have 480+ freshwater aquatic animals already but teetering on having to close my doors due to diagnosis of a tumor in my spinal cord thats inoperable and undergoing radiation and direct cell steroid injection therapy which does not enable me to work- I put my life savings for a downpayment on a home and my fiance and I were going to start the adoption process within the next 16 months because I am almost 30 and I have always known I cant have a child of my own but I sacrificed that, sold all my possesions that were precious and some not precious to me, sacrificed my art/wood turning/carpentry/resin work/gemstone cabbing faceting and jewlery making studio/workshop and sold everything that couldnt help me build racks or fix aquariums or do the construction or remodeling and design or DIY equiptment for the care of the fish which I am doing all on my own and have for 4 years now but had a full time job making enough money to support my personal breeding and community tank hobby which I have been in since I was 5 and bred my first pair of guppies and its been my passion ever since but never sold any offspring just made small aquascaped aquariums and donated them to hospice patients, sick children, less fortunate children, vets, families that went through traumatic events, etc, as I have been through bad times myself and my 166 lb great dane PTSD/ANXIETY service dog and my fish helped me through it, I posted one ad on craigslist 4 years ago looking to take in any unwanted fish as I had this new 20 long for my bedroom that I wanted to make a community tank out of with fish that needed a new home (that one post is how I ended up where I am today just by word of mouth I housed, cared for, rehabillitated even if vet care was needed, & rehomed over 3500 animal & thats how Lowcountry Aquatics Rescue was born but when I had to stop working I had no income & tried to come up with any fast cash I could as I went to facebook to try & gain community support, volunteers, & funding to help with the expansion, the remodeling & design of the building that I have about 200 sq feet to work with, no ac, only 4 horribly done electrical outlets & no hot water. Instead I was flooded with over 200 owner surrenders that would contact me maybe a day or two in advance, most of the time a few hours to 24 hours in advance, & bring the fish by in a bag or bucket dump them out into whatever container while I could find to put some cycled water after testing their water to see if i could create a mixture of Tap & DIY rain catcher filtered RO water to try & acclimate them to the perameters they had been in or what they should be in & they would sign the owner surrender form most of the time never reading it or filling out most of the info & leaving.
I didnt know what to do & that was about a month ago & I am out of funds & I wont lie I dont have much time to make youtube videos or posts to social media which I only have facebook right now because I am working 15-16 hours a day when I dont have doctors appts trying to figure out how to make use of the very limited space I have, extending to create a sort of outdoor oasis which I have had to clear a 30 year old junk area on the side of the building & am trying to clear the brush, make a new patio entrance & create summer tubs & ponds to make room because I am constantly worried about the fish I have had to put in the same tanks after quarantine (which is stacks of rubbermaid containers with cut out viewing panels & holes for air lines & heaters.
I am still struggling & am trying to get 501(c) 3 status but thats around 2000 but would enable me for grants & such since I am not having much luck on the community support from the coastal city that pull up in their mercedes & BMW's & almost literllally dump fish off on me- which the purpose of this rescue & sanctuary is to take in aquatic animals that can no longer be cared for so they are not released into our local waterways regardless of whether its the ocean a pond, canal, river, creek, or ditch as it has potentially catastrophic effects on the waters ecosystems & I used to sit on my dock before hurricane matthew beat it up & hurricane Irma killed it & watch the dolphins work together to rush small fish up onto a sandbar to get their meals with their babies by their sides, & think how devastating it would be to know something like releasing an aquarium pet into a waterway that wiped out those dolphins food source, or even a bacteria that killed off plankton that the smallest fish feed off of that starts this amazing ecosystem I have the amazing opportunity to live on & witness breaks my hear & so I will keep trying until I dont have a dime to my name.
***This video made me think about all of the species of fish, shrimp, dwarf lobsters, snails, eels, turtles, that I have living together & in reality it does extra problems sometimes & they need to be with applicable tankmates but that 20 gallong long tank that started this all had 3 amanos & 12 multicolored neocardina shrimp & I had them housed with various fish that would come & go but at one point had them with2 male full grown dwarf neon blue gouramis, a male adult chocolate cichlid, 5 young coral red dwarf platys, 5 small tetras that are notorious fin nippers, 2 juvenile BN plecos, a yellow tail zig zag eel, 3 skunk corydoras, 3 longfin zebra danios, a trio of random guppies, a zebra loach & a yoyo loach as well as two dojo loaches & 5 mystery snails & a 6.5 inch creamcicle sailfin split lyretail super pregnant molly. I noticed one day she was normal size but I didnt see any babies so I figured they had been eaten by any of the fish in the tank just like the neos that I hadnt seen in over a month..until I turned the moonlight mode on my Fluval FX6 I believe it was, & a bunch of tiny glowing spots in my zigzag eel's (ziggy) den attached to a long divet in the driftwood..I flipped the lights back on & gently pulled away some of the java moss & I was shocked to see ziggy wrapped around over about 80 newborn mollies & the entire time I was gently pulling each one out of the tank to put in a nursery with a turkey baster ziggy would swim up to the top of the tank as the baby fish got sucked up & any time I put my hands in the tank to move the moss back to try & find more babies she would nip at me which comming from the fish that was my baby & was always swimming around my hand when i would be maintining the plants or cleaning the tank & also ate out of my hand it was strange for her to act that way. I cant say she was protecting the fry, she may have been irritated & stressed that all these little aliens invaded her home but it sure seemed like she was mad I was taking the babies away. I ended up basically tearing the tank apart looking for any more babies & the count was 74 total at the end & they are still in above ground make shift ponds during the summer months & I bring usually bring them in during the winter but i thin I am going to have to get a heater this year because I have no where to put them all now. When i had pulled everything out of the tank those 12 shrimp I thought got eaten had turned into 58 & some stunning colors from dark blues to full lines of yellow fires orange sakuras, red cherrys, all kinds of colors of rilli shrimp & a few that had turned out to be wild form but I didnt care. They had made a cave like colony in the seriyu stone & under a pocket I think ziggy dug under the drift wood that i had no Idea it was there.
Point is ...First of all these are all fish I would never put together. How many animals in that group would you tell people they could house together??? Not many & I am not saying you can or should house the majority of these animals together at all & the tetras, danios, & the molly (Big Mamma).were very cramped & needed more space so I had to move them to a bigger community tank & slowly did the same with all the others. I also I would ever reccomend keeping that many fish in a 20 long unless you are just a super nerd & read things like bio-loads per fish per inch by species & know how to calculate how much & what kind of filtration you need to keep the water clean & parameters met.
These werent large fish nor really messy & I had a xl dual sponge filter on one end, a corner DIY corner filter made from a bucket cut to size with holes that ran through two types of filter mats that flowed into an area with pantyhose bags of home made activated carbon,a bag of crushed coral, lava rock & bioballs that I 3d printed powered by a diy matten tube air driven filter that returned the water into an over the tank hydroponics filter that emptied out into the other just before the sponge filter at the other end & dual power heads that produced a gentle flow of current just enough to where there was a slight sway to the plants & the water stayed crystal clear. Its not always standard certian animals can live together. Do your research before you get fish- Observe during quarantine and monitor after adding to the fish to the tank with your shrimp.
I have a tank with endlers and now a big colony of shrimp! It is heavily planted with some midground plants (crypts), a carpet ( monte carlo, echinodorus tenellus) and some moss, buces, etc. So if you want to breed shrimp and also breed fish, get some endlers! The Amano Shrimp works out in all my tanks. They are great cleaners, And big enough to not to be seen as food,
yeah they tend to catch small fish fry and bully my caridina varieties and downright kill young neocaridina in some of my tanks. but they can be handy, no doubt
PYGMY CORYDORAS are small cute guys too, they should be fine with shrimp ???

lot of complainers on here lol, a lot of people do like your style, you are doing great, I find your videos entertaining, congrats you are almost at 15k. I have seen hundreds of your videos going down the rabbit hole lol. Hoping you can provide some insight. I have about 40 black panda caridinas in a 40g breeder, I have not been able to find much research on tank mates but Im doing stuff a little differently. the water is super soft so im not using RO. I mix stuff with my news, but wondering if CPD's or any species would work with them or if you tried it. Cheers Thank you
Thanks buddy! I appreciate the support greatly. The best sort of fish i think are going to be micro rasboras (sundadanios axelrodi) neon green, blue or red rasboras...they may eat new born babies...but those, CPDs, and other tiny fish generally swim mid water and ignore the shrimp especially if they have some places to hide. Baby shrimp try and hide for a month of their life, as do pregnant female adult shrimp. The super super safe choices would be a panda loach, an otocinctlus, or marbled/zebra otocinctlus (they're pretty also).
You could try clown killies too...they hang out up top most the time and a are very small... threadfins as well
@@Fishtory yeah that's what I was thinking ty for the reply, I know people generally don't put tank mates with their Caridina probably cause they cost so much, I think they will work with my CPD and otos once the biotope grows out and the population gets bigger. Cheers mate
What type of plants would you suggest I have ghost shrimp in my 20 gallon long?
Pearl weed, Susswasstertang or any fine leaf plants...guppy grass works well, hornwart also

Perfect RCS tank mate: Hatchetfish. They only feed from the top of the water because of upturned mouths so they physically can’t eat shrimp.
Totally, i also find that rocket/clown killis, panda loaches, and otocinctlus never eat my baby shrimp either
I thought co2 injection and shrimp are a no no. Also, I have a Siamese algae eater too, but mine is fat and about 3 inches. Do those hunt for shrimp? I just added cherries. Mostly worried about the babies when they breed. I also have jumbo tetra (red/blue) that hang out mid level and middle of tank. They don’t seem to bother going after juvi shrimp, but I also have a heavily planted tank so I don’t think it would really be an issue since they don’t seem to seek out anything.
all of the fish will eat baby shrimp...if you have a few inches thick of vegetation that a fish can cruise through, then some rock hides for babies.... you'll probably have a colony that grows... for me the SAE dont bug adult shrimp. but I've heard of larger ones like 5 or 6 inch fish. eating the adults even (not frequently ).
I'd watch yout tank and make sure the numbers dont dip down all the sudden...if not and you see berried shrimp, then I'd just keep at it.
Also CO2 and shrimp is a no no just because it changes the PH and suddenly when it stops and starts, for cherry shrimp and neocaridina. most are fine with the .2 -.5 ph change that can occur due to off gassing, however it leaves you less room for error if theres an ammonia spike or some other parameter issue...especially in the small tanks
Hey, Alex. Some of your shrimp tanks don’t have deep substrate but they have rooted plants. Are you using aqua soil in them for the plants???

i specifically set up a second tank for shrimp, so that I could put shrimp in with my betta and not worry about him eating them. so, in my perfect logic, the shrimp could breed in the second tank and then as my betta ate them, i could move more over to his tank. I thought I was being so responsible and logical.... Reality - my betta is the laziest betta ever because he doesn't eat them, not even the baby shrimp. they can swim right around him and he just turns his nose up. So now i'm completely over run with cherry shrimp, lol.
Haha well at least its a food problem to have! It's essentially like growing, little swimming $5 dollar bills in a box of water hehheh.

I'm just curious, I see you answer most questions, how do you keep your aquarium so clean?I'm scared to vacuum mine in case I hoover up any shrimp. I had to go bare bottom and start using a turkey baster style pipette to suck up poops one at a time
That's one method, but you can get pantyhoes or fine cheese cloth...even a loose woven cotton shirt will work, and put that over the gravel vac...vacuuming... gets particles and usually breaks up waste...but if you have chunks of plants, food or big fish poo, then spot clean with a turkey baster...invest in a decent one haha. It's a bit time consuming, but you lose far less baby shrimp that way...and it keeps you very in tune with your tanks!

Most will hunt shrimp badly ...even sparkling dwarfs do. Buy honey gouramis and thick lipped gouramies/sunset gourami are pretty peaceful, so with enough hiding spots they can do alright

Very much so. Pregnant shrimp will hide an entire pregnancy if it's a predatory tank of like 50 guppies or something...and same with their babies until 1/4 to 1/2 inch in size

Haha it is from silicate (from local sand) in my substrate... local sand seems to have red and brown diatomaceous algae spores in it here!)
I've never seen my Albino Corys eating baby shrimp, it seems when they get to close to any baby shrimp, the shrimp jumps backward which startles the Corycat, who swims away in the opposite direction.
most small corydora are not going to mow down your shrimp, but sometimes they eat a handful

My oranges have exploded in population. I've got some interesting mixes orange insides with blue skin...stripes, green, etc..
I was misinformed at the pet store and told the oranges were bee shrimp and wouldnt breed with the blue cherries.
I now have over 100 orange/mixed on one side. Breeding my blues only on the other side.
Gotta get my population down.
Oddly judging from the eggs i see inside my big girls, I should have several hundred.
So I think many babies don't make it even without predators.

Yes...it has been done, but is extremely time consuming unless you have an automated water change and dosage Regulator system for water conditioners
I watched the video and you said that neon tetras are okay, but I had cardinal tetras attack my blue velvet shrimp >_< I would think they have the same temperament, but no? what do you think>?
Well, first of all, "Okay" is a bit loose. Some neon green/ neon blue tetras at their full grown size will eat baby shrimp if they see them (but I've had thriving colonies with tetras, rasboras and guppies etc...by having lots of plants and rock hides/ shrimp caves for young shrimplettes.
However, ive never seen a n.b.terra bite any shrimp...especially not the adults (im sure since in a while some individuals will probably at least scare them off their perch).
As for cardinals- they grow to double if not triple the mass of most neon green/blue tetras and i have seen one of my full grown cardinal tetras actually nip an adult shrimp and im sure theyd eat babies.
The key to any fish is to keep the fish thinking about other fish...so have a school or have a peaceful but larger fish...pleco, algae eaters, even livebearers living in the top water...with places for them to weave through and hide....then at the very bottom the shrimp need even more of that...but once a shrimp gets chased or watches another one get eaten, they'll tend to be more sneaky and cautious. ... also keep fish well fed..2 or more times per day...this will keep them full and happy- but mainly keeps the fish thinking of food only being flakes or what not. Also feed the shrimp some sinking oellets (i like crab and invertebrate by HIKARI in a purple/ pink and silver pouch at most pet stores....this keeps the shrimp down and not competing for flake food and tempting the fish"s instinctual drive.

@Shay lynn111 for the most part, yes...but they also will eat a baby shrimp in the first 3 months, if one darts right by them and triggers that instinct....however look at my videos on making shrimp hides, caves or rock piles and that should allow 50% or more of the babies to grow up, in my experience

Well you are correct but they are breeding tanks for 2 catfish species. shrimp and endlers ...each (cory, pleco ancistrus and neo caridina), so catfish leave a mess of algae and spirulina poo, but it's harmless if bacteria is cycled up enough throughout the tank.
So yes, its sort of on purpose for the shrimp/ and also sponge filters leave cloudy water (like many lakes are in the shallows) When i switch it up with HOB filters all the debris and algea goes away within hours. The nitrates are 10ppm or less though.
Also since these tanks pay for my 40 gal downstairs and my 3 upstairs "spotless" tanks...in other videos
This is what's in nature too. Clean tanks, is just human aesthetics.

Usually i don't. They just eat fish food and algae. Honestly the shrimp food industry is kind of a joke...MOST shrimp don't need anything but some extra calcium in their food, which even flake food can have. Now that being said, i do like bacter AE to encourage slime coat and biofilm growth on surfaces, however hikari crab and crustaceans/ invertebrate food in a purple and pink pouch at petco or petsmart and many LFS.'s is one they adore ...as well as hikari pleco algae wafers

yes they will if not fed and in a large group with other fish... like if you had 3 barbs...theyll go straight for even adult neos, but 10..they seem to mostly be interested in their own school of fish and not shrimp

Either way works fine, just add lots of plants too (you can add them before a tank is even cycled)
In order to introduce shrimp, substrate has to be rich in organisms, this happens 2 months after the aquarium is cycled. Fish can be introduced as soon as the aquarium is cycled. BUT: if shrimp are introduced 2 months later, it's possible that there'll be shrimp losses, as: 1) they'll have no knowlege of the place and it's hiding places, 2) established inhabitants possibly will attack the new-comers.
So: in order to introduce fish, better wait 2 months, till substrate will be ready for shrimp, and a few days after shrimp are introduced.

I currently have 3 tanks of neo cardina shrimp with guppies. 2 of the tanks are guppy grow-out tanks. The 20L I have with larger guppies I just started a small colony and have a female berried up. I have plenty of java moss in there and hardscape. I'm curious about how shrimp would do in my 20g Hex tank with a school of 6 golden white clouds. I also have guppies with the white clouds. What are your thoughts about white clouds? They seem to have smaller mouths than the guppies.
Ive seen white clouds eat a lot of shrimp babies....however, with enough layering...some dense plants or grass then a carpet of moss or susswassertang at the very bottom, with some stone piles for hides- and i think youd be fine...they like similar water temps and stats

also, my cherry shrimp colony is exploding with 1 male ender and 7 green neon tetra, its a 10 gallon, with 2 medium pieces of drift wood and a rock pile in the back corner, and hornwort on the surface. i see shrimps of all sizes all over the place and none of the fish chase them.
that's awesome. My colony of RCS ...that's in the 40 gallon tank still grows, however compared to my colony that has fish. I realized I'm losing like 80% of babies and not really noticing it. Since 20% grows. Yet in my tank with shrimp alone. it triples or quadruples in size every 2 months.

You know it really doesn't seem to matter a ton. They're very peaceful until pairing off and they do that, 2 fish at a time...and its over quickly

Stock - school of Congo tetra, Neons, Blue-eyes, otos. Even the plants went nuts after I added the sand. There is natural iron in the sand too. Now I put it in all tanks.
