"Who needs gloves when youve hands like leather" is such a badass quote when youre literally picking up a smoking hot burger. Blacksmiths are the definition of manly. Strong, but with endurance to keep doing strong things unlike some weightlifter, able to withstand heat like it's nothing, as nobody else can, working in a swelteringly hot environment all day every day without complaint, constantly getting minor injuries and just shrugging it off, *and able to make literally anything they need, from tools for their job to basically most things we need in life* .... literally the definition of a manly man.
Welder too man. They lift heavy crap all day, are in insanely hot environments all the time because of the temperature of the welds and time your welding, and they get injured all the time. Pretty much modern equivalent of blacksmiths anymore although I’m probably wrong
My husband works a desk job, and he is no less a manly man. His father is disabled and works voice radio jobs. A job is just what you do, not who you are.
@@1.red.panda.1 Not that it is any of my business and I could be totally wrong but I got the impression they were more than friends. I swear I saw a clip of Eoin waking up next to him lol.
@@poppinlochnesshopster3249 yeah i’ve got no clue either, i don’t know exactly which video your talking about but you might be right, i just don’t remember eoin talking about him before and i don’t think they have the same last name
Based on the videos I’ve seen from both of them, they are coworkers doing summer gigs at Bunratty Castle, but they knew each other and were friendly before hand. James is married and I believe Eoin has a girlfriend. They go to other events together too sometimes, and I think they like to camp instead of rent a place to stay so, yes, there are a couple of videos of them in sleeping bags next to each other.
I love the clip you made Eoin. You two have an awesome friendship! I love the Gone Courtin’ sign 😂. Keep posting, James. I’m thoroughly enjoying your content. Question: how do you get the metal smooth after you’ve forged your piece? *~may the forge be with you~*
The bits that were straight stayed straight and weren't hammered (much, and even when they were it was with a flat hammer which was larger than the piece) so will stay relatively flat. The chiselling won't do much to that. The bent part will also stay relatively smooth When heating metal, once you then hammer it, the thin outside layer will fall off as scale (due to how the ĥeat/smoke/charcoal affects it) leaving fresh smooth metal underneath. If you look, it still has slight pock marks, it isn't completely smooth, but that's how metal usually comes out when you start with a straight bar. Sorry I'm not james but I hope that answers your question.
That look on Eoins face at 0:52 was great lol, it's both a "Why do I have friends like this?" and a "It's great to have friends like this?" expression.
You sound exactly as my father used to, with the same Irish accent. He's been dead for many decades, but when I heard your voice, it took me back to when I would sit at his feet, listening to all the stories he used to tell me about being one of 17 children, and running about with his ar#e hanging out of his trousers and no shoes on his feet, which used to amaze me to be honest. Poor as church mice his family may have been, but proud they certainly were. He was a proper Irish rogue, was my dad, and he was deeply proud to be a true Irishman!
After fair time following Eoin’s work UA-cam decides this is how I learn you have a channel of your own. For this I thank the great algorithm, may it shine forever upon ye
That was really a gorgeous and thoughtful gift, James. I do hope that Eoin had a splendid birthday. If my piggy bank bring some coins I would like to buy a Trivet from you, someday 😃🇿🇦
That burger looks just delightful, I'm sure to get my blood iron up being served by a master smith! Beautiful work, both on the iron and the cookin! Happy birthday Eoin!
I blacksmithed a few times at camp when I was a child, and I have dreamed of it ever since. Glad to find your channel, and seeing a friend make a heartfelt gift warms my heart.
as a keen metal detectorist. its great seeing what belt hangers and strap ends would look like in their prime. its amazing what you find hidden in the ground for 100s of years made just as you do
There was a sign on the door of a surviving facade on a falling down house behind a fence off the Coal Quay in Cork city. The sign read in chalk “Dinner’s in the oven, gone courting, love Mum”. Brilliant.
the fact that i have been unaware of the fact that James had his own channel until now is absolutely criminal!
I went most of the way through thinking it was Eoin!
That's exactly how I found O'Conner, right from James
I know
same!
I subscribed almost immediately😂
I am rather pleased to hear James getting more confident, you and Eoin are both gems.
Ancient technology for modern technology. Blacksmithing is awesome.
To quote Eoin Reardon:
"Out with the new, in with the old."
"Reject consumerism, embrace repairing." (This one I might be misquoting)
