I had a feeling Alexis would love Rush and we chose Tom Sawyer as her first song introduction. The layered sounds combined with thundering bass, elegant guitar and Neil Peart legendary drum section make this one of Rush’s most recognizable songs.

If Alexis wants to see how good Neil was show her either Xanadu live or Neil’s live solo from Germany
His solo in Frankfurt is an amazing display.
really? those are good, But there are certainly better representations of the band.
@@wendymotogirlnot Xanadu from Exit Stage Left. That is the pinnacle of their live performances. The absolute pinnacle. However I would say Neil’s performance at the Buddy Rich tribute was better than his Frankfurt solo.
Alexis, since you were asking about Neil's drum setup, watch his his solo in Germany with the drum setup that is 360 degrees around him in a circle. Especially since he changes styles during the solo including jazz at the end.
@@wendymotogirlthat solo gets so much attention because of its record quality. Don't sleep on any of his work
A band where every member is a Master of his instrument
Not even my favorite band but never has a more accurate statement been uttered in the whole of subjective human history.
Yep, there is not a member where you say, Eh. While their style is nothing like Tool, Tool reminds me of them in that respect, including being anchored - in a good way - by the drummer.
The fact that this masterful trio ended up together does a lot of heavy lifting in my belief that perhaps some things really are just meant to be.
plus more, i can think of many bands where each member was great at their instrument, but each member of rush was so much more than just their instrument
Wait till she hears YYZ and Subdivisions
Neil Peart, your favorite drummers, favorite drummer. The GOAT!
*The Professor.*
Unless, of course, your favorite drummer in Neil Peart. He wasn’t egotistical enough to be his own favorite.
Love quote!
@@0okamino 100% correct!
@@roguesquatch1 Not that I would blame him if he was his own favorite. He certainly put in the work.
This song was so technically complex that Peart would gauge how well the set would be based on how well he played this song. It was criminal how long it took for the R&R Hall of Fame to admit this band.
They didn't need the R&R HOF to show how great they were. the fans already knew! and they thank their fans when they did get in!!
It is a very deceptive composition. A fairly slow tempo of about 80bmp and about 15 or so changes in time signatures. They always considered it a victory if they played it with few or no errors.
At the private memorial for Neil many of the greatest drummers came to pay their respects. In the process Stewart Copeland (aka The Police) made a statement. "We are all our fan's 2nd favorite drummer". Very introspective of community and their respect and love for Neil.
Neil is your favorite drummer's, favorite drummer. Period.
When you have a band that every member is on the top 10 list of every Rock musician, yeah, you know they're good.
And if he had said the Earth is flat you would believe it?
He was wrong.
@@markuse3472 says you. But a master musician like Stewart Copeland has a right to his opinion.
@@markuse3472 go back to listening to backstreet boys
I wish every time I heard 'Tom Sawyer' was the FIRST time I heard 'Tom Sawyer'... RIP Neil...
Neil Peart is your "favorite drummer's favorite drummer". Thanks for sharing a memory from my childhood.
RIP Neil Peart.... yes, their shows were legendary, saw them live over 60 times, from 1977 until the end, each one was amazing....
I'm one of those Rush girls since 1980 - found Permanent Waves and my life has never been the same
Thank you for introducing her to the boys ❤
Please show her Rush Xanadu live exit stage left! That will show how amazing this entire band truly is live! I personally have seen Rush live 13 times, seriously 😊😮 ❤
This^^. Definitely one of my favorites each time I saw them live. And I can honestly say when I went to see Primus do their version of "Hemispheres" a couple years back, when they started those first few notes of Xanadu.....well, to say that I got emotional is an understatement....
Absolutely. Xanadu from Exit Stage Left is a perfect performance.
"...decreed by Kubla Khan...BDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDBDB"
BEST part. Thank GOD they got that live recording. One of my favorite change-ups to his fills.
@@markstoudenmire4935I got to see Primus open for Rush. That was a great night.
First rock concert at 13 years old. RUSH 1974 pre Neil.
“Spirit of radio” or “Limelight “ should be next by Rush. I agree to the suggestion of Boston’s debut album-fire! I really want to see a reaction to Tesla, particularly “What you give” and anything else by them !
Modern Cowboy straight 🔥
How about love song from the acoustic series when Frank Hannon grabs the tele for the solo?
Im from Teslas hometown and WYG is a great song but MDC or Love song is a better choice.
It’s not whatcha got it’s what you give! It ain’t the life you choose it’s the life you live! (Great choice of song from Tesla!)
For me, "The Spirit of Radio" is their most singable song ever.
I remember when my father always playing that song every sunday morning while he wash his classic car 20 years ago.
Literally everytime, especially on sunday morning.
It's so damn catchy that I unconsciously sang along to some part of the song just by hearing it for like 5 times.
I once heard that Prog rock is best described as music for musicians rather than for people who wanted to dance. Rush has been at the top of my list for 40+ years. It’s definitely a rabbit hole if you’re up for it. RIP Neil; RIP Le Studio. Great reaction!
The were so good live. All three of them have mad skills. The light show they did was great also.
I have I have seen them about a times over the years. They were fantastic every time I saw them, but if you are showing someone for the first time, I would stick with live shows from 1998 and earlier. watch the entire Different Stages. That was the best live album in my opinion showing the best eras in their career.
Saw them three times, can confirm.
Light show, animation and sound....they attracted the best of EVERYTHING
Best live band I've ever seen and that list includes Deep Purple, Tool, Primus, Coheed, Maiden, PJ, Metallica, The Police, Priest, Dio, Mastodon, and many more. I was blessed enough to see them four times in four different decades. RIP Neil
You’ll love Rush’s YYZ live. Master musicianship and the audience goes wild
While it seems rather impossible to me, somehow, I don't think she would.
I like how Burch is clasping his hands together to keep from air drumming the fills like rest of us. That had to be hard.
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
Gary
As a Canadian, i'm really proud to say they're from my country. ;-) I'm pretty sure that Alexis would like songs like The Spirit Of Radio, Subdivisions, Limelight, The Pass, Nobody's Hero.
Neil's a must study for percussionists. He rewrote everything and what was possible.
God I love this song for decades and decades. At 53 I still turn this up and roll down the windows. It's rare for a song to just take you immediately back to a specific time. Love the reactions.
Same with me. When I listen to Rush... so do my neighbors, lol.
You have to show her Rush Working Man Live In Cleveland.
Can't ever go wrong with some Rush! :) Props to you Burch for being able to keep your arms still during the prime air drumming sequence when you knew it was coming! hehe...
was not easy my friend 😀
There was nothing like seeing thousands of air drummers at Rush gigs
And, don't forget, Neil was the band's lyricist and primary writer on a lot of their pieces. 🎵☺️🤘
Like your videos guys, both of your inputs are authentic, real, and good. Thank yous guys 🙂
I'm very happy :)
My favorite is Xanadu Live from Exit Stage Left.
A good follow up for this song would be either Spirit of Radio or Subdivisions.
Alexis really needs to hear Boston's debut album.
Yessssssss 😊
Oh yea....
Yep
As an album review. absolutely.
All in favor? Aye!
Working man live is a great one to show her .
Great reaction as always!
Neil wrote a lot of the lyrics for Rush as well. Incredible musician.
The Professor .....
Once he joined the band, he wrote ALL of the lyrics
Rush... Best Band EVER...
Nuff Said
Spirit of Radio!!
Spirit of Radio!!
Spirit of Radio!!
Spirit of Radio!!
Spirit of Radio!!
For the ultimate in Rush's ability to layer and showcase their musical ability, i suggest you let Alexis listen to the ultimate instrumental, YYZ!
I love that it’s not just one instrument that’s featured in a song. Their breakdowns are especially fun since it’s not just the typical guitar solo time…it’s pretty much an explosion of musical genius between the three. Glad to see your reaction to Rush. Try to remember that Rush was around for over 40 years so their music changed greatly over time. More Rush please! 😁
Ask any drummer how many drums they need and the answer is YES. A drummer's kit is one of music's most personal things with so many variables.
So glad to finally get her reaction to this band. They have so much more for her experience.
She'll be a Rush fan very quickly 😁
Alexis is delightful. A charming personality obviously. This is fabulous duo for reaction to music. I’m subscribed.
Rush was liberty in sound. They wrote their own music using their own rules and this is why I loved their music. In an age of overbearing record labels and limitations of time and cookie cutter bands they ignored the critics and made music they loved to play. We were lucky they shared it with us.
Well said! They followed their own path for 40+ years and took us along for an amazing ride
Simply said...they made music & played music.
Show her The Garden from the Clockwork Angels Tour. It's a great song, it's live and I'm pretty sure it's got good shots of his drum kit.
As much as love that song too, I feel it should be about song 20 so she can get the full breadth of his talent and heart. Then the heartbreak of the garden is in full effect.
She would not appreciate it if she did not listen to some more before it.
Time for her to see Frankfurt drum solo! 😊😊
Beautiful winter in Morin Heights Québec, Canada...5 minutes away from my house...Grew up with Rush and will die listening to them..i miss them so much, great react.
Burch, I love your remark… “that’s, prog rock… ”… yeah, the song was over when it was. RUSH blew everyone away. I’m 61, I know this music quite well… ;)
My absolute favourite band. I have loved them since my older cousin introduced me to them when I was about 10 (in 1977). I think Limelight or maybe Subdivisions next, to showcase Neil's ability to write lyrics that deliver a message as well as play percussion.
Xanadu Exit stage left would be a great live one to do!
Other worlderly is the best way I could describe RUSH to a non RUSH listener.... so many great memories growing up to this music!
After decades of listening to Tom Sawyer, I still got a chill and goosebumps when the opening note started. And in concert: "Hey, kid. Come 'ere." "1, 2, 3" Boom! No words!
Tom Sawyer. The biggest hit from the best drummer/writer in rock history. Verse, Bridge, Chorus, Solo were the first words my neighbor said when I was sent at age 9 to have him lower the volume. When my mom came later, it was Triumph - Fight The Good Fight. Great analyses.
Triumph was great too
Man I just love this channel. These two have such great chemistry discussing some serious musical talent. It’s so good. Love it.
Thank you Steve, that is very kind!
@@flickeringboxofficial what happened to the blonde girl , Steph I believe she is called?
"Layed back group..." When they opened for KISS back in the 70's, after the show KISS was wondering why their hotel room was so quiet compared to theirs, and when they went to their room, the 3 of them were relaxing reading books. Neil Peart (drummer) is nicknamed The Professor
70's and 80's music was so full of life and filled a very big space.
Female lead singer, Fem Fatal Big one.
Triumph would be a great 3-player band to follow up with after this fantastic band.
Yes, Triumph is awesome, Just A Game, The Sport Of Kings and Surveillance, albums.
If she likes Progressive Rock, remember that Rush got their inspiration from Yes. I recommend "Roundabout" or "And You and I" for an entry to Yes. She might not be able to get "Close To The Edge" until she gets into the sound of the band. Yes will never disappoint.
I think it was at Yes' hall of fame induction that they played "Roundabout" with Geddy Lee on the on the bass.
I was just going to mention that Rush is considered one of the founders of progressive (prog) rock. I would add that Yes would be considered one of the originators of prog but Rush were very influential and inspirational to many great bands who followed. Rush is my all time favorite band. I was fortunate enough to see them live on every tour from 1984 through their final tour, not long before the passing of Neil. Neil was an incredible percussionist and lyricist (as well as a great author). Geddy and Alex are also considered two of the greatest musicians as well.
@@louofm1 I guess that shows the difference in our ages, LOL! I've been listening to Yes since 1970 or 71! Let's just say that Rush took the ball and ran with it! Love both bands and blessed to have seen Yes live 4 times and Rush in about 2012.
@@danacasey8543 I just started walking (or crawling) the earth in 1970. My love for this music came about in the early 1980s
@@louofm1 Hey, better late than never! I have to say that even my adult children (36 & 38) are envious of me being a teenager in the late 60s and early 70s. I raised them on this music and they are raising their kids on it too!
Great to found out many decades later.. I was a Cool girl for loving RUSH. When I was younger they thought I was strange & kinda nerdy for a Metalhead/ Rush Fan. Blessed to have seen them Countless times live.
They definitely put on amazing shows! I saw them about 8 or 9 times over the years, beginning with the Moving Pictures Tour. Alexis needs to see Xanadu Live from Exit Stage Left in 1981.
Sadly, I discovered Rush the year they stopped touring. I'd heard them for years, but never committed to learning all the different band names.
What's also great, is that they were friends away from the music. no in-fighting or ego in Rush!! there are so many great songs from Rush!!!
Love watching Alexis react she gets it!
OMG, give Alexis more Rush 😅 I suggest The Spirit of Radio or, since she likes synths, Subdivisions. I really enjoyed this reaction 👍🤘
Dude, I saw the cover for 2112 and said "no! way too early for 2112 concept"....but then saw 'Tom Sawyer' and said "Yep better introduction to RUSH"!
PS I need to amend with, she got it!
Saw them in person, best concerts I’ve ever been to by far, 2112 is most remembered by me
Very cool Alexis has been introduced to Rush. If you think they sound different now, wait until you hear what others suggest from them, such as "Limelight", "Spirit Of Radio", "Red Barchetta" and "Closer To The Heart". From there, its not a stretch to the bands Yes and Genesis. Can't wait to see what comes next in this rabbit hole!
Show her one with Neil's last drum set he used.
That transition, where each instrument had it's own part - was where most guys blew their car speakers by cranking up the volume. At least we could replace them easily enough back then!!!
For a simpler song, instrumentally, but also a heavy song, try Rush’s swan song, “The Garden.” That song is heavy with meaning, eloquent, poignant, and so beautiful. To me, it’s a song that when you watch them, you realize how dynamic it is and they really show their mastery of their respective instruments
You two should probably check out the "Danny Carey" video of Pneuma by Tool, particularly around the 6:30 mark where Danny starts drumming a completely different rhythm with each hand. Danny is an amazing talent and the song is excellent. I think he could rival Neil Peart (though he was probably influenced by Peart as well). Both are god-level drummers.
Great choice This one and The Spirit if Radio are the perfect introductions to this wonderful band The songs arebbt too long but they pack everything in and show off all their skills. And the great news is it's only gets better from here
Rip Neil Peart you left us way too soon 🥁
I can't wait till you show her Neil Peart LIVE!!! OMG!!!
Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
Type O Negative - Christian Woman
Neil Peart the GOAT
Next Rush song - Red Barchetta
Yes gotta do The Drab Four, but my vote is for Love you to death.
Last night , I literally searched for you 2 reacting to this song! A day later , there you are! You have made my Monday COMPLETE!
That makes us really happy David!

fun fact. Both guitarists play synth with their feet while on stage.
Hi Alexis and Burch. Burch you should show her Frankenstien by Edgar winter. Live studio version since she's like keyboards.
Also please do a Alice In Chains. Live versions of:
Love hate love
Man in a box
Nutshell
Neil Peart was not a drummer. He was a percussionist. There is a difference. John Bonham was a drummer and the best. He literally changed drumming and how music that had drummers progressed.
Peart was a percussionist and put all other percussionists to shame so much so, he had less impact on music because percussionists did not want to be compared to him.
First, please pronounce Neil’s last name correctly.. second, you don’t have to do a video, but you should listen to the Hemispheres album. It was their most technical album and puts all three to their limits and beyond literally draining them..
I hope you eventually told her Neil also wrote all the words.
When my kids were newborns through grade k I would sing them this song every night at bedtime… even singing the keyboards, guitar and drums.
YYZ live from Rush In Rio! 40,000 insane Brazilians singing along to an instrumental.
In the 80's girls didnt like Rush because of the multiple time changes in their songs which made it hard to dance to. This was not a Prom song.
😂💯
Most people react strongly to Geddy's voice the first time they hear it. When I heard Rush for the first time (Tom Sawyer), my reaction was "What the hell is this?!". But I kept listening to that album and it just got better and better. Pretty soon Rush was my favorite band. Still is to this day. Saw them at least once every tour since 1986, right up to the end.
"He had a lot of stuff going on" perfect epitaph for Neil's headstone
😁😁😁😁😁😁
Wait until you experience 2112 Alexis 🤘🎸🤯
alex smiling in awe at Neil just freakin HOSIN it. around min 16.8. Love.
Three prodigies on top of their game. RIP Neil….GOAT
Yes one of the best shows I seen
Neil Peart was also their Lyricist!
PS: Alexis is absolutely beautiful… just a compliment!
ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS IN THE WORLD
Rush is probably your favourite band's favourite band. And Neil Peart was called the professor for a reason. Check out their induction into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
I’m about the same age as Alexis and my dad got me into rush as a kid haha. Have been listening to them ever since and it brings back memories as a bonus :)
One of the best bands ever.
Neil always said that playing this song without mistakes was one of his favorite challenges!
Nice to see new people experiencing Rush
Takes me back to the days of riding home from school in some friend's car, smoke billowing out of the windows. Great music to stone jam out to.🤘😜
"Your favorite drummer's favorite drummer."
I remember when Moving Pictures first came out. I bought the album and put it on the turn table. Tom Sawyer blasted out. I couldn’t stop playing it over and over again. My mother came home and complained about the noise. Thank God I had plug in head phones.
If you were playing Rush, and she complained about noise, she must have been talking about something else. As we all know, Rush is objectively not noise. 😉
The studio was in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec. Sadly, it no longer exists...it caught fire in 2017.
And RIP Professor. Cancer sucks...'nuff said.
One thing about rush, they were even better live... went to many of their concerts, even after a 3 hour concert the always left you wanting more, best live bands ever, they never made any mistakes live...
Cheers
Great reaction....
Rush in concert was definitely exceptional in being able to leave you so satisfied and wanting more at the same time.
it is almost maddening to see a reaction to a classic, something I grew up with as a kid, not even a rush fan back then, I was in friggin sleepaway camp in the Catskills at the time doing the air guitar thing on my over sized prince tennis racket, the original silver/black ones... the moment I heard this album I loved it... it did not launch me into rush fandom or prog fandom but I loved this album immediately... later on it impacted me so much more... Neil is such a loss, and they all will be, but Neil..damn... he was named the professor for a reason, he wrote books, lyrics, he played to a different world... RIP Neil...
They were so dynamic when playing live!! Fantastic reaction. Thabk you.
Best band and best drummer in the planet. RIP neil.
Several folks have already suggested the live versikns of 'Xanadu' and Neil's drum solo in Frankfurt. They are definitely required watching, of course! Damn fine shows.
But here's one folks might not know- 'La Villa Strangiato', from the Rush in Rio DVD set. It was the first time the band was in South America- 'we had no idea [how popular we were]' Geddy Lee replied when asked, 'What took you so long?'
The concert was recorded late November 2002, in Rio de Janeiro, in front of 40,000 howling Brazilian fans. 'Nuff said, man.
The Moving Pictures concert I had the privilege of experiencing in 1981 left an indelible mark on me. Up till then, I had attended my share of rock concerts but nothing ever compared to this level of musical professionalism.
She absolutely needs to see Neil's Drum solo in Germany!
I saw them live 27 times from the 70's to their final show in Toronto June 19, 2015 and every second of every show was fantastic, out of this world. The musicianship and everything about this band is/was outstanding. Please have a look at their last rcording, "The Garden".
Keep diving down the Rush rabbit hole. That library is emense
RUSH IS:
Geddy Lee: Bass guitars, Oberheim polyphonic; OB-X; Mini-Moog; and Taurus pedal Synthesizers, vocals
Alex Lifeson: Six and twelve string electric and acoustic guitars, Taurus pedals
Neil Peart: Drum kit, timbales, gong bass drums, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, wind chimes, bell tree, crotales, cowbells, triangles, plywood, tympani, and Symphonic Chimes
I love this video, partly because of the background scenes in the recording studio.
Every Rush song is like a space opera.
I love Burch’s shirt. . . Gr8 reaction. Thank you.
It's hard to believe this song is nearly 50 years old. Jeez I'm getting old.
