- Filmed this amazing 1976 Nascar which competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1976! It's no other than the Olympia Charger, quite a famous race car powered by some true Murica V8 muscle!
The start up sound was absolutely INSANE, really, deafening. I'm glad I was able to record the pure Nascar Sound of this beast.
Other than that the video features some accelerations and fast flybys!

A hemi Charger at Spa, LOL, I can hear the old guys living nearby........."the Americans must be here today".
@Roger Dodger 0:10 clearly this is a Gen 2 Hemi. Also, the Charger looked completely different in 1976. This is a 73-74...

anyways, idk when the 7.0L mills were booted by NASCAR, but this car? Deffo a 426 Hemi.
@Roger Dodger LA blocks have the distributor in the back and it stands upright. B and RB blocks have slanted distributors on the front passenger side of the block. Just behind the water pump. You can also see the plug wire going through the valve cover at 0:10 like said above and that is most definitely a 2 piece Hemi racing intake. The 75 and up models had more square bodies also. The 71-74 was the same bodies with different grills, bumpers and odds and ends. This one has the split nose grill with horizontal slots which was 73-74. 71-72's had either hideaway headlights or 68 Superbee looking split nose grills. 68-70? Same bodies also. 68's had round side markers, round tail lights and flat across grill. 69 switched to rectangle side markers, elongated tail lights and split nose grill. Pretty much identical was the 70 to the 69. And the Hemi motors was what was banned from nascar. They said fans was getting bored with them winning so much. (Nearly half the races, not to mention the other top spots.) It's why i won't watch it to this day. While a very well built 318, 340, 360 LA, may out run a Hemi, there is no other engine on the planet that can sound like one. The way the hemispherical heads and pistons combust is so much more effective, it just makes a sound you can't get with a regular flat top or domed piston with closed or open chambered heads. A little info for anyone interested.

The -75/76 season chargers driven in europe were the older -73/74 bodies, and THIS CAR IN THE VIDEO has a 426 HEMI in it, which you can see in the beginning of the video at 00:10.
If you don’t know the cars and engines by the LOOKS, you shouldn’t be arguing and make yourself look stupid.
Every nascar fan and even enthusiasts with knowledge of them knows all the regulations and rule changes in US soil.
These chargers were not “official us-nascar” -75/76 chargers, and even less official when having the hemi in it.
If you don’t SEE the HEMI from the valve covers and intake manifold, then just stop arguing. 🤦🏻♂️
And if you can’t even google the facts that these specific chargers were indeed the OLDER -73/74 versions and had indeed the “illegal” 426 HEMI in them, I have to face palm my hand trough my head.

Edit: The T/A (trans am) regulations had that 5liter limit which why ford build the 302 boss in -69, and the nascar went to smaller engines cause of the aero wars and powerful big blocks which were considered “too dangerous”
I have to say that -69 torino talladegas with the boss 429 (which were homologated in the mustang for some reason, not torino) whooped all others ass without any wings and shit, and they were the real “killers” in the nascar.
And I have never heard that mopar cars would have a de-stroked Hemi’s for the “restricted regulations” cause the hemi is allready a short stroke engine and I know mopar didn’t make those engines with smaller bore either, so I have to ask where are you getting that info from, that mopar teams would modify hemi’s to smaller sizes?? 😃

NASCAR was at it’s peak during the 80s and 90s (mostly through the 90s) and that was the beginning of the “silhouette” cars (FWD/4 doors, Lumina, Grand Prix, Taurus). Many people said that going from RWD/2door cars would ruin NASCAR forever, but it didn’t. Some of the best racing ever was during those years. What has killed NASCAR is their inconsistency in fines against drivers, the change in points system (the Chase), over expanding it’s territory (too many tracks in big Northern cities),the lack of interesting drivers, letting Toyota in, and their recent “get woke” mentally. NASCAR was about its roots in the South, with the moonshiners, with many all of the early drivers having spent time running shine. Those that came later, cut their teeth on small dirt tracks scattered around the south. Now NASCAR is full of drivers that began racing go carts at 8 or 9 and never had to worry about having enough money because their mommies and daddies paid for it all. NASCAR used to be full of real men racing, now it is just boys. And with the way NASCAR is going, it will soon be soy boys.
@@mopar_dude9227 IMO NASCAR fucked itself by adopting gimmicks to try and attract an audience that wasn't there while simultaneously alienating it's own core. As for the problem of not enough working class people, I think that problem is not gonna solve itself since even karting's expensive nowadays and it favors young kids with rich parents. This problem is a fairly universal one though so you fellas are not alone with it.
I wish they raced stock factory built cars,. then Ford could bring back the Crown Vic. 😄

Modern day engines are pretty amazing when it comes to sound and performance, but classic V8 goodness can never be matched or surpassed.

Search the Mercedes/Sauber C9 with the 5.0L dual turbo M119 engine. Sounds just like a Nascar stocker, but used to hit 240mph on the Lemans Mulsanne Straight. Which is why there is now a chicane at the end of the Straight, to slow down the MB.
I love Ferrari V8 and V12 exhaust notes, but there is something very special about Chrysler engine exhaust notes especially when modified. They just have their own nasty cackle and growl. Not just Hemis either. 340, 360, 383, 440.

It didn't do as well as purpose built GT-type cars with it's obvious weight handicap but for an American NASCAR ride it did better than most would've expected including me.

Donald TittleJr pretty awesome really. But with a mountain of horsepower and torque up front, fully adjustable suspension, and racing slicks it doesn't really surprise me that it could easily be made to hang some corners rather well. I've always said these classics still don't get the credit they deserve. Also it's funny how, while technology has changed and become more complicated, the cars themselves in these sports haven't really seen any drastic change in speed. NASCAR and IndyCar being my two prime examples. Yes they're worlds apart from where they used to be but actually the speed and performance has remained relatively similar
Evan B I have a '73 Nova with the 350, and I find myself going through windy rounds and around corners at 40-50 mph without even realizing I'm doing it, and that's with the original 43 year old suspension! People who say old muscle can't handle just don't know what they're talking about.
Personally, I'm a MOPAR guy. I just can't afford one. Those old MOPAR's are going for a lot of money these days.

That's a 73/74 body style. 74 was the last year before drastic change. Beautiful and sounds wicked! I had a 71 RT 440 and a 72 as well.

Yup. Body style ran from 71-74. Herschel started driving a charger in 74 so I assume that was a 74 being run at lemans in 76.

it's not a hemi. it's a wedge. The hemi head wasn't allowed in nascar so they put the 440 wedge head on it after Richard Petty actually found it made MORE power than the hemi in same config.

Cold start at the 1 minute mark! Love it! They don't have chokes, of course, so you have to pump the gas pedal a lot and then feather it once it's running until the engine starts warming up. Once warmed up it will idle on it's own and not stall.

Damn... that brings back memories. When I was a kid in high school I had a 71 charger. I slaved on it for over a year in the garage doing the bodywork, I put a Dana 60 under it with a 440 and a four-speed. 71 was a beautiful body style, it just wasn’t that popular compared to the 67 -69.

f1 is about the most sophisticated technologies and how to be quicker and quicker, not funnier to watch. yes, stick shift is cool and i love it but there is no good reason for f1 to use it, they develop hi tech stuff that will be later used on road cars (mostly)

It's a gear reduction starter. You only thought it cranked and cranked and cranked when in reality the engine started within 3/4 of the first revolution. Oh, well would you believe they were priming the oiling system?

Chrysler was the first to engineer a reduction gear into its starters (hence the unique, undeniable sound) which gave the eclectic motor a more efficient mechanical advantage and enabled the use of a smaller electric motor (more under hood space, cooler running, less expensive, less weight, less energy/amperage to operate resulting in longer starter and battery life). In addition, it was Chrysler who first introduced/pioneered the use of the more efficient alternator (and electronic ignition...but that's another story). Both these innovations (reduction gear starters, alternator systems) are now the universal industry standard. I lived "back in the day" (late 60's and 1970's) and changed my fair share of starters most of which were those enormous Ford direct drive starters (and solenoids...for some reason, they tend to burn them more frequently than GM's and Chryslers) which cost more, weighted considerably more, and burned up way more frequently. The GM's faired better but no where as well as the Chryslers. Chalk it up once again to Chrysler's superior engineering.
The old charger is still kicking it damn good.

@Ground Control My 68 Plymouth roadrunner was made on the same chassis platform as this Charger, the platform was referred to as Chrysler's "b-body" and it handles better than most new cars. It weighs less than most new cars too, my Roadrunner weighed 3350 stock which is just a wee bit less than 90's Supra or Corvette. I'm sure this Charger with it's wide slicks, chassis stiffening and suspension improvements drives like a dream.

I've been daily driving a 68 Roadrunner for almost nine years now and I have several other muscle era cars and trucks so I know what I'm talking about. I've watched a guy behind me in a BMW slide off the road and smash his wheels and bumper cover on a curb trying to get off the highway as fast as I did. Good tires are far more important than vehicle age when it comes to handling abilities.

And just listing a bunch of car parts doesn't mean squat, rack and pinion steering and independent suspension were big in the 70's so that's hardly evidence for anything modern. And what kind of idiot thinks a sequential gearbox has ANY sort of affect on vehicle handling? Anti-lock brakes and traction control systems are just a crutch for drivers with no pedal control. You definitely never built a race car, much less raced one. I can smell your bullshit from a mile away . . . .

It's either a 73 or 74. Only years that has the quarter panel that sweeps forward at the door. 71 and 72 sweep to the rear. Charger body changed drastically for 75. Using a Cordoba type body.
Richard Petty raced that body style (73-74) until 1976 or 1977. Pretty sure it was 77.
