'Garage 56' NASCAR Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1: Burnouts, Show & Brutal V8 Sound at Goodwood FOS!

- FIA and ACO introduced the ‘Garage 56’ in 2012, a single-car entry reserved to prototypes with innovative technology lesser seen in other disciplines of racing and which debuted with the DeltaWing. This extra slot on the grid was added as rules became more prescriptive over the years and innovative approaches struggled to find a home at Le Mans, always been a great test-bed for new ideas.
As NASCAR was celebrating its 75th anniversary, also taking into account the importance of the centenary edition of the French endurance race, the 2023 Garage 56 project has been a partnership between NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet and Goodyear.
The chosen car was a modified and lighter NASCAR Cup Series Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stock car, driven by seven-times Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, 2009 Formula One champion Jenson Button and Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller.
Part of the NASCAR’s 75-year celebration, the Garage 56 backup car - identical to the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 that completed the 24h race in June (also present in the paddock) - was driven by Mike Rockenfeller and Jenson Button during the 2023 Festival of Speed.
Yes, yes I know... As dozens of people have already told me, I should have gone to Le Mans and record it in the right location. Please don't remind me :'(

This was one of the most loudest cars at Le Mans. It was so loud that people were wide awake at night when they heard that familiar V8 engine.
Smiled every round when it passed🥰
Correction, it was THE loudest car there! 😂 But seriously, hearing that thundering roar making the ground shake is something we'll never forget at Le Mans in a hurry 😊
@@CupsofCopus
Not to mention that many drivers hated the car because they couldn't get some sleep. After all, it was so dang loud.
Nothing like a good ole LOUD earth-shaking American muscle for a motor eargasm.

I really like the way Nascars look with actual headlights, tailights, mirrors, and also the added aero.
NASCAR is a sport, Not a Chassis style…
These are called stock cars i believe btw
As much as I wish stock cars would return to being stock production cars, I also would love to see a Garage 56 Endurance Series
@@jourdanshepard31 Bet you're real fun at parties.
@@kylem7917I don’t mind them looking like this. The gen 4s looked even less like road cars and everyone loved them
The NASCAR Camaro Endurance Race Car will forever be the most diabolical racing car to ever be on the track, it defied odds and persevered.
As all American entries have in the Le Man's series. Viper, Corvette, Ford, Cadillac -- with their first time back in over 20 years, took 3rd and 4th.... the Americans have a history of dominating in racing, no matter how chapped European asses get about the fact.
Everyone always shits in the Americans until we show up and show why we’re the big dog
@@PotatoeJoe69taking nothing away from the successes (I mean I adore the Viper so I'm not biased against the US), less of them have been overall, it's still brands like Audi, Porsche and Ferrari that lead the table of overall Le Mans victories. I'm not saying that it's an impossible feat for an American manufacturer to win overall, but they don't seem to do it as much as they do in the various GT categories.
@@Xiphactinus That's purely down to how long they've raced in the sport; which wasn't very long. Their stint was short, but dominant.
@@PotatoeJoe69 not denying that either (Ford effectively stopped Ferrari winning overall until this year), it'd be nice if they stick around a bit more to give us Euros some more competition (come on Cadillac, enter two cars smh).
You can tell how an American V8 sounds from miles away....freakin savage
I use lightning mcqueens V8 engine sound for measuring Engine Americanity levels
And this one is truly American indeed
Yeah, sounds more like a crossplane i4 due to the split pipes
2:24 one of the coolest irl burnout shots ever right there

Imagine if Nascar makes a full on racing series for this type of stock car.
You mean nascar endurance racing? I guess IMSA could include teams running these as a new class.

2:01 good job on the camera work to make it look like the world blew up when he put his foot down
Beautiful car and beautiful sound.
If they return in 2024 with an improved transmission, I'd totally watch them get their ranks up against the hypercar category
That and maybe refine the braking, and you've got yourself one helluva car
Also consider this car is 1,000lbs heavier than the Hypercar class; and it did as well as it did... 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
They might require them to adhere to the BoP then since two years in a row they're not really an "experimental" entry at that point.
Ford is sending a GT3 Mustang over actually
the garage 56 concept as far as I'm aware is only for tech demos or one offs that don't fit any one class, so the camaro might no longer be eligible unless they convert it fully to meet gt2/3 rules
Effin A thank you for this one! Can't get enough of this absolute unit and thank you for the best footage & sound out there as always Boz.
No worries, mate! Thanks a lot for your comment

I can just imagine his thoughts are pure astonishment
What a monster! That was the loudest and the most brutal sounding V8 I've ever heard. Thanks for sharing this with us. Wow!
I remember one moment. On Sunday I was on the opposite site to the commentary booth and big Screen and this car was doing donuts in front of Goodwood House. And even from the place where I was standing the magnificent V8 Rumble was Loud as hell! I was smiling from ear to ear and I was on the verge of crying from joy. One of the best car highlights of my life. Thanks bozzy for, as always, Fantastic video.

Nascar has road courses
@@markhathaway8000 Yes,but not frequently

I’m not a nascar fan but I hope they continue to show up with bigger and louder V8s at Le Mans.
People need to hear this live
Great Video Bozzy! This thing was by far the best sounding car at Le Mans! Standing at Tetre Rouge, everytime it went by, it's bellowing roar just made the ground shake and drown out everything (Even the Glorious Cadillac! 😂) So glad it finished at Le Mans and that you got some amazing shots of it! 😊😊
Couldn't have explained it better bro🥰
Thanks a lot buddy! Yeah, I can only imagine what it was like to hear it in person. Glad you're one of the lucky ones to have had that experience ;)
4:28 Traction Control 🔥🔥
Applause, applause, applause! 👏👏👏
The best sounding V8. ❤
Listen to the regular cup cars they sound better imo.
Late 90's early 2000s Nascar stock cars had the best engine sounds by far.
Sound of really, no turbo none, pure v8 sound
I'm a 60 year old woman, and when in my teens and up to my 30s, I use to watch NASCAR with my dad....especially when ESPN began to broadcast it every Saturday and Sunday. At the 4:00 mark -- Oh, I wish they had more footage of it.
Just barely saw the roof of Richard Petty's STP car, Ricky Rudd's TIDE car, and one my absolute favorites back in the day...Harry Gant's 33 Skoal Bandit car!!!
Those few seconds of this clip, really put a lump in my throat...miss those days so much!
My dad passed away in 1994, and by 1999, I kind of gave up watching NASCAR, it just wasn't as fun, even less so after my dad's favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt was killed at Daytona.
Look at how dirty ZL1 is daaaaaamn, still a fan favourite
The star of the Le Mans show

No worries!
Months later, I am still obsessed with this car and its performance at LeMans.

Le Mans Screamer!!!!
Official name from now on. The Le Mans screamer.
Exactly what i was looking for, thanks for the post
i wish this car would race the whole WEC season. But it only makes sense with more nascar entries on the grid
Nascar needs a wec presence for its ultimate survival, imho. I would love to see Nascar run at Monza, Nburg, and especially at Spa. Nascar will try three wide at Eau Rouge. They can't help themselves!!!
Jesus can you imagine having NASCAR announcing for that?!
Not sure how wide it is there but if they could get three wide pretty sure they would try 4 wide whilst bump drafting
Gotta love an American V8 screaming

New class: Stock Car Endurance
I love this monster!!!!
I am not an American car guy, but that thing is fucking nuts!
Should've heard what they were like about a decade ago. In qualifying trim, the same motor as what's in this car punched out north of 950 horsepower at nearly 10k RPM, while running on the ragged edge of a catastrophic meltdown from taping off the cooling inlet for reduced drag. These days they're restricted to 670 on most tracks, or about 450 at Daytona and Talladega.
@@griffinfaulkner3514 Garage 56 car was over 750 i believe
@@jasons2562 Around that number, yeah. Unrestricted intake, but limited to about 8,500 RPM for the sake of reliability.
@@griffinfaulkner3514man I miss those days. The mean piston travel in one of those engines actually exceeded that of an F1 engine from the same time. Truly engineering marvels.

American Power 💪❤️
insane car
This is not the first time in History where a Nascar race car was invited to Europe but always met with ignorance at first and then respected at the end of the day by the race fans! Back in 1963 Junior Johnson brought over a big Ford Galaxy with a 7liter V8. People thought it was too big and heavy and would be a huge road block! History proved otherwise! The only car that could keep up was a Ford Cortina Lotus driven by Collin Chapman himself!
This car is world motorsport patrimony! ❤
I wish NASCAR would go to this and add more road courses and rally test their teams’ ability to design and tune along with their drivers’ ability to drive.
Where ca i get one of those does it come in red or black with cup holders and a ski rack
Be nice if nascar ran this setup on road courses. Wishful thinking though
Pure madness ❤
the fia gave garage 56 authorization to make the most terrifying thing to roam the land since the cretaceous period and it worked
LOVELY!!!

Could have made this the new 2024 Camaro look
Imagine an American GP series with cars like these, I'd be very interested.
Trans Am
There is. The Trans Am Racing Series. It's kind of hanging on by a thread, but that's the way it's always been.
Hello everyone .... pushrod V8s are definitely not done yet! that thing is an animal ....
List of changes from a standard NASCAR Cup Car:
- Superspeedway-style 7 inch spoiler
- Dive planes/canards on the front and rear of the vehicle
- Larger tapered spacer, bringing power up from 670hp to 750hp
- 6-speed sequential transaxle with no-lift-shift and autoblip
- TCS
- Rev limiter lowered from 9000 RPM to about 8500 RPM for longevity
- Lighting
- Custom rear diffuser
Sorry brother, they kept the 5-speed transmission, with paddle shifter.
Some source said that it still 670 hp, but looking at the some onboard videos that they could keep up behind the ass of LMP2s so it could be around 700 hp, more or less.
At the risk of sounding arrogant, there’s NOTHING like the sound of an American V8.
Yay
The Blue Eagle of Le Mans
There should be a special edition production Garage 56 Camaro.
Yes, yes, that is the NASCAR that ran the most 24 hours of Le Mans this year, 2023. And the others that you see are NASCAR cars from the mid and late 80s and early 90s, Dale Earhardt's car is there. the famous car. I'm a NASCAR fan, I love that v8. NASCAR fan anyone?
The car make badass sound now it drive badass
Throw some turn signals on it, and I'm taking this puppy to work!!
Man they need to build these cars for the road course races on the calendar. This thing is hundreds of lbs lighter than its sister American NASCAR competition stick car. The brake system is crazy lighter as well. Bigger . And the aero is great. The car was Ripping in Le Mans . I know it wasn’t really competing in a way. But it finished the 24 and that’s what we came to do. 🇺🇸 now let us in. Let us have a class . And let us send our guys to compete against one another in one of the most Glorious races the world has ever known
That sound so good similar to bmw z4 gt3

I hope whatever special edition Camaro Chevrolet puts out to commemorate Garage 56's participation in this year's LeMans race sounds half as good as this does!
Will have. Camaro Garage 56 edition. 56 units will be manufactured equipped with the LT4 V8 6.2 supercharged engine with 650 hp. It will be exclusive to the American market.
@@fabiopaixao7902 i havent seen it but I love it already
It will be a real monster. One of the last of the Chevrolet. Because they have plans to make Chevrolet fully electric.
