    Thank you, Thank you! I had no idea how they worked and found them troublesome. Now I find the radio's marketing department troublesome.

    Very interesting how privacy codes are not private. Out for a trail ride,good idea. State of emergency ,i may want to hear whats going on. However ,thats why i have ham and cb. Maybe i will set one or two channels . Thank you for explaining

    I am subscribed to your channel. Great review,! You cleared up for me the difference in repeater analog vs digital tones. It took me a bit but figured out how to tell if a particular repeater is using a digital or analog tone. Digital ones start with a capital D and Analog ones end in Hz. I continue to learn everyday. You can correct me if I am wrong.

    Question, and I think I know the answer. Both the tx and rx have to be programed with the same code on all radios in the group, correct? Great Vid, Thanks.

    Thanks for this video. On the screen grab you do show, is it just as simple as that DTCS Setting and then picking a DTCS code and setting nothing else? I notice you have some other channels above set up with cross, assuming those are for repeaters. Planning to just copy a whole other set of the 8 GMRS channels and have them all on a privacy tone so if we do in the off chance have someone on say gmrs 1 using privacy tone 145, we can just move up to gmrs 2 with privacy tone 145.

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  Рік тому +1

      Yup, it's really that simple. You are also correct that the other ones I have are for repeaters. We only keep one channel on privacy codes and just use non-tone channels when we have other people join us unless I want to take the time to program their radios.

      @@TrailTraveler Awesome! Yeah i hear you on the group thing. i was fortunate to score a 5 bundle of the Baofengs for cheap and just have them all programmed. I usually end up tossing a couple out to the peasants of the group still in the stone age with their CB radios. :D

    Can you set these CTCSS tones manually on your GMRS radios? Most HAM's can find the tone by scanning. The tone opens up the receiver.

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  Рік тому +3

      Yes, they can all be set manually on the radio. It's not hard to scan for the tones, but we aren't trying to keep our conversations private, we just want to block out other people.

    Hi, Thank you for your help with setting up Privacy codes for my BaoFeng for Tx and Rx... I did set these up in Frequency Mode. I just want to be sure in order for the privacy codes to work, I have to Send and Receive in Frequency mode? Once I go back to Channel mode, I hear a lot of chatter on the radio. Thanks in advance.

    Well explained. Thank you. I’m very new to gmrs and I noticed after the end of some transmissions , it sounds like the same noise as fire and police use around my area. Are these specific radios programmed to make that noise ? What is it ? It sounds different than a roger beep

    Great video and explanation of the privacy codes and how they work. Menu 10 and Menu 12 refer to DCS as you discussed. What is the difference between DCS and Menu 11 and Menu 13 CTCSS? They seem to do the same thing.

    • @TrailTraveler

    If using chirp and programming a radio, how do we know which privacy code we should use?

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  Місяць тому

      If you are setting up for a repeater, you need to match the repeater’s setting. If you are just setting it up for your own group, you just pick one.

    If I have two radios with a PL (ctcss) setup, and we’re talking, will other people keying up on the same frequency “block” transmissions if we all key up at the same time?

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  11 місяців тому +1

      If the have sufficient power and are close enough, yes. The PL codes only act as a filter to keep you from hearing them, many radios will even show a receive status when someone without the code is broadcasting, you just won’t hear it.

    Question: If the radios are filtering non-tone transmissions, then I'm not aware if I key the mic and step on someone currently transmitting. My question is, since I'm starting my transmission with a tone will the radio then allow both transmissions to be heard, or will it only let the toned transmissions be heard?

    • @TrailTraveler

      You nailed it. If you have more power, you could absolutely step on someone else’s transmission.

      @@TrailTraveler but otherwise it will be a garbled transmission due to both using same freq? Just trying to figure out why you would use the tones other than to eliminate the chatter...better to roll off the freq to another? vs potentially having garbled comm due to a chatty kathy letting someone know about her latest cat acquisition while you are trying to make a call. Appreciate the fast response btw!

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  10 місяців тому

      @@scottstevenson2754 Someone not listening to the tones will only hear the most powerful signal. The primary purpose is to eliminate chatter. We have actually been in places where we could not find an empty channel. Since we are using this trails, our local radios will always be a stronger signal than someone a couple of miles away. From "our" perspective, this works perfectly and we don't hear other signals.

    I understand digital codes on GMRS will get you a thorough drubbing. You can transmit and receive on different frequencies. Make your own channel lineup. Customize your own repeater.
    Cotre digital radios are pretty private right out of the box, and even cheaper than those radios you have. Prices vary.
    Beat tone voice inversion scrambling is only available on relatively few radios these days, and is infuriating to eavesdroppers.
    But if they're already on to whatever it is you're involved with, they'll probably get you eventually. Might just wanna move.

      I have no need for actual privacy in our conversations. We use the privacy codes only to filter out OTHER people. This keeps our radios quiet except for the people in our group. I don't care if other people can hear us, we are just out doing trails.

      I have never seen a GMRS radio without privacy codes. Your particular radio may refer to it as something else. Some radios refer to them as DCS codes, PL tones, or Quiet Talk. When using these codes, other people can hear you, but other people not using the codes will be filtered out and you will not hear them.

      Privacy codes are also known as PL tones, Sub-channels, Sub-Frequencies, and other names based on the manufacturer. They all refer to the same thing.
