I have my ham and GMRS license, have appropriate radios for both. But the reality is, in real life, no one cares unless you are causing problems in frequencies your not supposed to be in.
I think that GMRS shouldn't require a license because: 1. Most GMRS radios have such a short range that it really doesn't matter 2. Mostly kids and drunk adults playing around in the GMRS channels anyway and I don't feel that I should have to pay $35 for that. HAM on the other hand is a different story.
@@stansmith4054 if you don't want a license use FRS or MURS or CB. GMRS requires a license because it allows repeater use, which repeater owners (like Randy) would like to know whose using their stuff.
Yea I'm torn on it, maybe no GMRS license unless you wanted to use repeaters, that's where you could start effecting other people trying to share a frequency. The reality is, is there are so many people that have GMRS radios and use them and they don't even realize they are supposed to have a license. I don't mind the $35 for 10 years and I like that me and my family have a call sign to share, then we know who is calling who. We also do a lot of camping and off roading and sometimes it can be hectic out there if a lot of people are on GMRS, it can get confusing. In reality though, if you are being cool on the channels and not causing problems no one cares and the FCC ain't gonna be knocking on your door. For the FCC to come knocking on your door you have to be making someone mad for them to call them on you.
The once real instance I know of the FCC knocking on a door was a guy that told me first hand. He said it was back in the 90's an he had a CB radio and he was pumping out some insane amount of power with a huge antenna in his back yard. He was causing interference all throughout his neighborhood and someone called in on him. He told them they needed a warrant and they left, and he took everything out and down and just left his basic CB radio with a small antenna. When they came back with a warrant they looked at his set up and said "well it must not be you then" lol.
Man, I would give just about anything to be able to meet you in person and hang out! You are the coolest and funniest guy and every time I watch one of your videos it makes my day ‼️‼️ much love to you brother ❤️‼️

Baofeng on GMRS is not a big deal, especially compared to everything else. Entire groups of off roaders and dog hunting clubs use Marine VHF radios out in the woods or off road. Like yeah, ok, gov likes to fund itself with our dollars, and they don’t care if they aren’t cost effective, but even a none elected official wouldn’t waste that much
I’ve been using mine uv5r for almost a year now on ham and gmrs and on repeaters with out a license for almost two years . I don’t think the fcc really cares.
Inland Revenu agent for 22 years here, you didn't pay your taxes due on the licence you don't have, your going to jail for an extra 22 years. And that's after you finish the FCC sentence.
If you hold the radio by the rubber duck antenna, you can probably press the talk trigger all you want! You might even be able to do it with the radio turned on!
As a licensed ham, as well as a licensed gmrs user, I’ve never seen anyone get into too much of a twist HOWEVER, idiots do from time to time wind up on public safety frequencies and that does create a problem.
I have two UV-5Rs but only transmit on Ham Freq$. I have two GMRS handhelds as well as my GMRS license beccame effective July 31. Greetings from Missoula, MT Randy
The short answer is YES YOU DO, becuse the BAOFENG (pronounced Bow (as in bow of a ship) and Fang, like a wolf's fang. - Bow-Fang) -- the FCC classifies the Baofeng as a HAM RADIO. So even tho the older models can transmit into FMRS and MURS -- LEGALLY you cannot broadcast on those channels using the radio. EDIT: After hearing mygigglehertz ... I'm starting to think that you are doing the same thing with Baofeng. I'll sit down. ;) Out where we live, we use Baofengs on the MURS frequency, as we'd rather play that punishment than people using the HAM without a license, tho both of us have ours lol, we just don't like saying our numbers because of the public info available. But I think the name of the game is - if youre causing problems, causing interference, then the complaints will clue in the FCC to sniff around. We'd stop well before that happened, but being on a 20 acre farm has its benefits. I also love the older Baofengs because they came unlocked -- perfect for my grid-down no-holds barred communication continuitiy and security plan which involves hopping all over the available bands to avoid people listening for too long -- and being unlocked is a huge benefit for that wider range, where most people will be stuck to their commercially programmed range/channels. I have several channels set in the TV broadcast frequency -- but come grid-down, SHTF... who cares ...but also, whos going to be monitoring their radio ...on the old TV broadcast band? No one. So better security.
Off topic, but is there a solid transmitter I can use with an SDR on my computer for the 40m ham band that I can get for under $500? I'm ballin' on a budget and that price tag stings
Talk about trying to create a storm in a tea cup! In the world of YT I guess it makes you popular and drops some coins in your account. First timer on you channel here. ... Wait is your entire channel about this BS? I thought it was just this episode! LOL . I personally want to get my ham radio license. I like the idea of having a call sign. I like the idea of learning the protocol and learning how to behave on the air. I like that if you have a call sign I can expect that you know the same. It is a base for understanding each other. Same as I like the idea of : People having a driver license, so it is unlikely they will drive in the wrong lane. I like that there are categories like trucks, motorcycles, commercial, etc . Or taking sailing lessons so it is reasonable to think they won't put life in danger and competent people won't have to risk their own lives to go save their sorry (soggy) a**. I also like the idea of bicycles having a license plate so I can identify them. When you play in some of the HF (and other) frequencies you are playing close to frequencies that are not public and, as you said, you could get into trouble for that. It is nice to learn what those are. Also you can reach far far away places that might not have the same laws or customs as the USA, why be a sh*t-head? Back in the days of Smokey and the Bandit CB was all the rage, you would be chatting at 4W until a "cowboy" came barging on "your" channel blasting his 25W rig to burn everyone. That killed CB. I think people want a little more decorum on the HF band and want to avoid the "cowboys" invading the space. That's all. 73.
Hi, thank you for your videos. I have 2 x UV-5R, one stuck on two channels, 0 and 127. not sure how i got there. I have tried a full reset but that didn't work in taking it back to when it came out of the box. Can you please help?
Out of the box the radio has only 2 channels programmed - 0 and 127, so it sounds like its working as intended. Switch to VFO mode (press the VFO/MR button) and you can enter a frequency, then save it as a channel, or just stay in VFO mode and enter frequencies manually.
Thank you . I'm a hiker overlander . I have not used it out in the wild . I do not have a license . But it only transmits a few miles . If I'm wheeling in the forest , with friends, yes, I'll take my chances . Lol . After all there are real criminals to catch .
It really depends on the environment. I barely get a mi simplex in my neighborhood, but I can hit the repeater 27 mi away on a hill no problem, if I can see the hill. That's on a UV-9G, but it's only putting out a little over 2W on a stock antenna.
Using A Baofeng UV-5R Without An FCC License - Do You Need A License To Use a Baofeng? Yes Transmitting: the uv5r was not made to be used on the FRS frequencies or any other band besides then ham for transmitting. No if your just listening or using the flashlight. OR if there is a true emergency. Enforcements: does not equate with the laws on the books if you are a morally upright person. Edit: Yup he covered it all.
Can we talk about "clubs" that monopolize GMRS repeaters in an entire portion of the state that require you pay them memberships to use? Like North GA GMRS network for instance.
I am in Canada. I dropped my UV5R and it went off! Will Industry Canada hunt me down? My handle is so slippery, long and black. It does flop around like yours does. Is there a video about how to not drop my boa fang? Maybe a wrist strap will help.
Randy, or maybe someone else can answer this question? Oh and I'm a happy ham with an Extra Class license. Anyway, I recently got my GMRS license and I'm about to buy a few radios (2 mobile and 1 walkie). If my understanding is correct both my wife and I can use the call sign I was assigned. What if she is in her vehicle and I in mine and we talk on the rigs? Is that still OK to use the same call sign to identify, or do I need to pay another $35 buck-a-rools, or does the FCC's even care?
Remember there are no such thing as a good citizen. Only citizens that follow laws and those who don't. Better to ask forgiveness than permission. Love the videos!!

I use to use it since i bought not knowing about license im not from america even tho i yelled at all channels exist in uv5r and it’s been 3 years and it’s on the shelf
I've heard intentional repeated harmful interference on some of the largest linked Ham Repeater systems in the Country and have often wondered where the FCC was? I think they use Spectrum Analyzers more than Radio Direction finding. These days you can do Radio Direction Finding remotely with the use of SDR and even accurately estimate transmitter out put power etc. But that's Radio Enthusiasts and not the FCC apparently?
I was using my boofwang this morning at state park and a puffy old pink guy brought me a KrakenSDR, $32 bucks, & a half cup of Mack Donalds coffee. Elmers are nice!

I’ve been using mine uv5r for almost a year now on ham and gmrs and on repeaters with out a license for almost two years .
I don’t think the fcc really cares.
FCC Agent for 22 years here. We opened a case on you. You're going to prison pal. FOREVER.
Inland Revenu agent for 22 years here, you didn't pay your taxes due on the licence you don't have, your going to jail for an extra 22 years. And that's after you finish the FCC sentence.

It appears that 'sad hams' are more concerned about such violations than the FCCs. 🤷
What about the um, insidious emissions on the harmonicas?
These videos are fantastic
I like this video. very informative and useful. 👍
Im pushin my ptt on my buffwang right now!!
I renewed my Amateur Radio License & GMRS was granted & effective July 31st. I use an Ailunce HA1G radio.
FYI since ruling of Chevron deference I do NOT think the FCC has much enforcement power. And FCC rules maybe in play also, congress makes the laws.
So how do i find frequencies that are legal to use or unused by any companies?
Apply for an FCC license
I really appreciate the explanation, ive been a cb user for many years , but it seems gmrs is being used more and more in offroading
Pretty sure thats not one of the POINTER SISTERS on the SCREEN
It's the Pointed Head Sister.
Kamabla
Missing The Point...Sister....
I have two UV-5Rs but only transmit on Ham Freq$. I have two GMRS handhelds as well as my GMRS license beccame effective July 31. Greetings from Missoula, MT Randy
Why do you have a picture of the Joker singing in the background
That's the 'Giggler'. Her sidekick is, 'The Snitch'.
Out here everybody and their mothers uses the uv5r for gmrs ! we do what ever the f**k we want 🤪
I come here for the background music! Where is it? What happened?
Boy, you are right, that IS off topic! But here we are talking about UV-5R radios and FCCs rules.
@@TheNotaRubicon Figured I'd toss a line out into the ether to see if any big radio brains had a nugget of wisdom for me.
I didn't know you should hold your baofeng by the antenna! Lol.
Talk about trying to create a storm in a tea cup!
In the world of YT I guess it makes you popular and drops some coins in your account.
First timer on you channel here.
... Wait is your entire channel about this BS? I thought it was just this episode! LOL
.
I personally want to get my ham radio license.
I like the idea of having a call sign.
I like the idea of learning the protocol and learning how to behave on the air.
I like that if you have a call sign I can expect that you know the same.
It is a base for understanding each other.
Same as I like the idea of :
People having a driver license, so it is unlikely they will drive in the wrong lane.
I wanna see a review of the UV-5rm for comparison.
Hey what's up with heels up harris in the background is that your dart board???
Can we talk about "clubs" that monopolize GMRS repeaters in an entire portion of the state that require you pay them memberships to use? Like North GA GMRS network for instance.
My giggle hurts! Ouchie
I am in Canada. I dropped my UV5R and it went off! Will Industry Canada hunt me down? My handle is so slippery, long and black. It does flop around like yours does. Is there a video about how to not drop my boa fang? Maybe a wrist strap will help.
Love your video screen on the wall! 👍 👍 👍
The concealed rainbow flag?
@@sonofdemigodWe always KNEW! 😉🤣🙃👻
I have a GM-5RH upgraded UV5R, anyway I can jail break it? It runs on GMRS but I cant factory reset. Any info would help please
The FCC won't let me be · Or let me be me, so let me see.
They tried to shut me down I'm going to flee!
But it would feel so empty without pirate-me?
You should sent that to Taylor Swift. She might make it into a song for you.
Your GMRS license covers your entire family, irregardless of where you are or what gmrs radios you use. You simply both use the same callsign.
Remember there are no such thing as a good citizen. Only citizens that follow laws and those who don't. Better to ask forgiveness than permission. Love the videos!!
@TheNotaRubicon can you make a video on how to apply for a LMR license?
Yes.
Can you tell; me what you think about the UV-21R is it worth buying is it better then the UV-5 thank you
Whether or not it is better depends on how you define 'better' and what is important to you in a radio, and only you can answer that.
I have a bunch of Bowfang radios,, and they are all programmed to GMRS, MURS, Marine, and Ham frequencies... 5R, 15RM, 17 pro gps, 21, and I am going to add a bunch more, and I intend to broadcast on GMRS and MURS, FRS frequencies....
I know this is a dumb question probably but when I use my radio to scan what’s out there is it odd to not change it’s OEM parts to “Ham scan” as I like to call it?
I use to use it since i bought not knowing about license im not from america even tho i yelled at all channels exist in uv5r and it’s been 3 years and it’s on the shelf
I've heard intentional repeated harmful interference on some of the largest linked Ham Repeater systems in the Country and have often wondered where the FCC was? I think they use Spectrum Analyzers more than Radio Direction finding.
These days you can do Radio Direction Finding remotely with the use of SDR and even accurately estimate transmitter out put power etc. But that's Radio Enthusiasts and not the FCC apparently?
They're probably the very ones doing it. That's how things work, my friend.
"Who actually put the bogey man under your bed?"
You may not want to hold the radio by the antenna
Screw all regulations. Wolverine's! 😈
Just brought 2 boofwangs on ebay great radios here in uk great radios especially distance 😁👍
I was using my boofwang this morning at state park and a puffy old pink guy brought me a KrakenSDR, $32 bucks, & a half cup of Mack Donalds coffee. Elmers are nice!
Can someone tell me where I can get one of the original UVfiveRs that was a lot bigger and had a different Roger beep sound?
I took a plea deal and they only gave me 5 years.
Shouldn't have gotten the 20!🤣😉
If you do not have a ham license, and you key up on a ham frequency.....hams within 50 miles will swarm you like hornets and make sure you never join the hobby legitimately.
some of us won't even care (I've been a ham since 94 and honestly don't give a crap.. it's a HOBBY and the FCC doesn't pay me, so why should I do their job for them?).
@@sorphin You know what I mean though
@@sorphin Good point.
Luckily, I have bug spray. But, my dinky Boof-Wang MP-31 doesn't have many fars. It appears people using GMRS radios have better things to do than police those frequencies.
I did unlock and broke license for unapproved using one of these radios. FCC didn't come in to play 🚨.
Well, those Canadian Mounted FCCs can come and get me.
Just get the chirp program, cord, and program the FRS channels. Use it all you want on FRS. Nobody cares if it's not meant to be used on FRS, or if it's too many watts.
As a sad ham, I do have a request: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP KERCHUNKING REPEATERS INCESSANTLY !!!!
Hey, I get it, you wanna make sure your radio works, if you gotta do it, do it once. I beg you all. Licence or not.
Whats wrong with kerchunking the repeater, it lets me know my shit is working on a slow day when ppl are keying the repeater every 15 minutes.😄
