The crack in the side of the block can usually be attributed to a bolt ontop of the block backing out and the flywheel catches it cracking the block. The belt not fitting properly is most likely because the pto lever is bent. You can tell the handle is bent by looking at it in the disengaged position. If its bent, then it wont be all the way up where it's supposed to be in the off position and when you try and engage the pto the belt will still be loose and unable to spin the blades. Mine has 260 hours on it and I just went through the whole belt thing. The handle is fairly easy to replace and costs around $30. The bolts loosening up can be solved with loctite. Gotta take the top apart to do it,but it's cheaper to prevent it than replace the engine later. The mower cuts good when properly maintained. A good v twin engine would of made it a great mower.

I have one that has stopped running. It has gas and spark. The engine turns over but fails to start. I also checked the pin on the top of he shaft and it was intact and not sheared off. It will not even start with a shot of starting fluid. Any ideas?

The crack happens more toward the top of these engines. It's due to bolts on top of the engine working lose

Hi Chris. Thanks for the video. I just recently purchased one of these mowers and the brakes don't seem to apply when I ease off the accelerator. Any thoughts on what/where to adjust or check? Thanks!

I’m about to invest in a new riding lawn mower. Budget is around $1400-$1500. What do you recommend. About 1/2 of acre to cut about the house.

What size deck belt did you end up putting on? I bought the OEM belt and it is very loose.

Most likely your pto handle is bent and not letting it travel the full length to engage like it's supposed too. I had the same problem last year and that fixed it. When comparing the old and new handle, the old one was bent about an inch and a half. If you're sitting on your tractor and looking at the pto handle when its disengaged it'll not be all the way up in its top position. That's how you can tell that its bent.

That Kohler engine has a very bad history of the crankshaft counter-balance breaks and goes through the block. Also the cams do break up. I just picked up an LTX1040 lawn tractor, and that crank counter-balance was exactly what happened to it. I would NEVER put that SV590 or the 'upgraded' SV591 engine back on this machine. I got this one with 154 hours on the hour meter. That's a crime that Kohler won't fess up and make good on these low use blown up engines!!! 154 hours is just over SIX DAYS of run time! Six days and the engine is gone? That's crazy! I just installed a 19HP, (33S877), Briggs & Stratton on it. A couple of minor changes, but basically a simple job. The Briggs is the way to go with this. My other Cub Cadet, LTX1050, has a Kohler 27HP V-Twin under the hood. I'm going to be selling the LTX1040 as soon as I can. It's a good season for it. Someone is going to get a good unit.

You don’t need to talk trash about the “old man”, just talk about what you found wrong with it and show what and how you fixed it. We don’t need you commentary...
