This tractor has a CVT, (Constant Variable Transmission), style speed control The main drive belt from the engine goes through the drive pedal pulleys and then to the CVT drive pulleys directly. The CVT pulley also drives the smaller belt which goes around an idler pulley with the spring tensioner, and to the transmission pulley, which is the large one. I just picked up an LTX1040 that has 154 hours on it. That's SIX full 24-hour days of use on it. The Kohler engine was blown. Terrible engine for reliability. SV590 engine. They have serious self-destruction problems with the crankshaft counter-balance breaking and the dual cam shaft breaking. This one I just got had the counter-balance problem which went through the engine block in SEVERAL places. Tipping the engine sounds like marbles inside it. I replaced the engine with a brand-new Briggs 33S877 19HP engine. Almost a direct replacement engine. Runs better than the comparable Kohler. The Slow Moving problem is caused by several factors, one being as you said, oil, grass, and other contaminants on the pulleys. Obviously the belt is one that causes it. Only use the original belt on this one. It isn't the best system, but costs less than the Hydro-static model. The harder you press the drive pedal makes the Variable Drive pulley change its pitch for each side of it. The center of the pulley slides up and down which makes the pulleys change the ratio of each other. That pulley may also bind up/rust which makes the speed not change. Good video!
I own a Cub Cadet LTX 1040 as well, bought it in 2012 and just replaced both drive belts last fall... no slipping or slowing down... belts were getting cracked up, but had to push the Drive Pedal a little further each year to maintain speed. Engine is sound, no problems there!
Friends, just a little tip: if electrical issue, note there is a hidden fuse down under the seat. This will save u some stress. And tip of the hat for the video!
Thank you! Just got one of these for free because it won't move. I already disassembled the transmission and regreased it. Still wouldn't move. I think this might do the trick!
Try a belt first. Also, you can run a little sandpaper over the CVT pulley where the belt rides. The chances of the CVT being bad are low. I think a belt will fix your problem. Let us know how you make out.
Centrifugal clutch WTH ??? Cub cadets have weird stuff going on. A few years ago their blades were not offset and they had a blade timing belt that kept them from hitting each other. Too many extra belts and pulleys to worry about.
I am of the idea after owning this thing that i will never own another!! They work great for about 2 seasons and then the problems start. Steering is wearing out after 120 hrs and now my belt needs changed. Had Murray's before for years and all i had to do was quickly change the deck belt. Id get 8 seasons out of one and were cheap enough to just go buy another...
P.T.O. Power Take Off !! Most are defined by an electric clutch , but this is a cable tension system to engage the mower ....pull the handle back or push forward , it has a cable attached to it that runs down to a slider unit with another belt pulley that takes up belt slack and engages the blades thru belt friction ...
I have this same mower and my belt is very bad and it is getting slow. I know the belt is stretching with how bad it is cracked. I wish I could find a manual on how to change it. The manual says see a dealer for this one. I never do that.
Replacing the belt is not a hard job. If you have moderate experience , pop the deck off and if I remember correctly, it's two bolts that hold a bracket on and the belt comes right off. It's a half hour job on a bad day. You can do it!
Rob Rotenberry thanks for the tip. I can work on things but at a quick glance it looked buried. I just replaced the crankcase seal and valve cover gasket at 146 hours. I just bought the mower and the guy never touched it. I hate that.
Correct. Cub is MTD. Now if you go into the CC dealer, you still get a premium model. Same as Deere. Deere is also MTD when you buy in the big box stores.
@@302vettelife2 I'm not so sure about that I fell for that one myself in purchase day I don't even know what the model of thing was over here in the shop and take a look an la135 from the John Deere dealer here in town not wanting to get the big box store version and I got the big box store version just not a model number they sell
Deere is NOT made by MTD.. not sure why this rumor started.. but it is false. Sadly the junk box store Deeres are made by Deere in Greeneville, Tennessee, the higher end Deere Lawn and Garden equipment is also made by Deere but in Horicon Wisconsin.
Its called a variator, make sure it is working. it should move up and down spreading and collapsing the pulley. dirty pulleys are not your issue. you may have had a belt on wrong. You can dip those pulleys in oil and they would still work.
I have a 2015 LTX 1042 KW hydro. My problem is the front tires in sharp turns around trees + flower gardens tear up the ground with giant furrows !! I had the company rep out tore around some trees, left great furrows ! DUNNO he said. Several weeks later try experimented 1979 cub cadet hydro turning sharply. Guess what ? Its a miracle ! As fast as I could travel with sharp turns, NO FURROW !!!!!! KNOW WHY ?? Parked both tractors side by side same left turn. The same left turn, what a difference in the front tires of the turning angle ! On the old tractor (left turn) sitting in seat, the left tire has a sharper turning angle than the right. On the 2015 the complete OPPOSITE !! No wonder it tears up the yard so badly !! The stupid guy on the assembly line has been doing it wrong for years !!

I watched a video on this. Sometimes the gas pedal link needs to be bent with a pry bar to
Solve the problem.

Such a great post. Thank you. Very informative.
Well the LTX 1045 had a problem just like this. It was low on fluid. Cub Cadet replaced the transmission free of charge.

Thanks. I'll give it a go. I just put a new drive belt on and was excited to get going... only not much go.
Watch the video on my page and you will see the fix it's super simple
@@jlistdiy
Turns out mine is leaking oil from the crank seal and dripping on the belt.
@@WallysPlace66 well that sucks sounds like you have the Kohler engine
@@jlistdiy
No, the previous owner blew that up. I put a Briggs & Stratton opposed twin in it. I ordered a sump gasket and a seal.
@@WallysPlace66 ah ok yeah it happens

They're not building them the way they used to. That's for sure. I have a Honda push mower.....junk. the older Deere and Cub stuff was the best.
I don't know...mine is 8 years old and still going.
what did i miss in this vid?
Can you please explain the PTO handle on the side? Thank you.

Everything is either MTD or AYP these days I am pretty sure.

You sound like you know what your talking about, but I'm not sure dipping the pulleys in oil would promote good friction with the belts.
