I respect the passenger for kindly refusing to drive in the woods after driving on the main road! I'd feel bad if he crashed a rare car that isn't his.
Truly a beautiful machine. I've commented it before, but still, you are a hero for keeping it in such a graceful, yet stout condition. Only more so for actually driving it.
What a pleasure to see Mr. Tim O'Neil behind the wheel of a Rallye Golf! I enjoyed the video so much that I watched it again... Love seeing that Rallye Golf sideways in the hands of a professional, can't say enough... Request: can you do the same kind of test with a 16v MK2 Golf? I want to see the diffence between FWD and AWD with the same car and road conditions. Thank you so much for putting this video together and posting it for us to see, great work!
1) I love that car... Wanted one for years. 2) I love that has a super rare car in great condition and he's actually driving it like it was meant to be driven and throwing it around. That makes me so happy. Good on him.
Tim, thanks for the video. I grew up across the street from the guy who bought your old '91. Unfortunately I only saw it in action a handful of times, those XTrac gearboxes were something special though. By the time I got really interested in cars he had moved on to racing the F2 Kit Golfs one of which was Alister McRae's old car. I forwarded this video on to him and be he'll get a kick out of it. Cheers.
The system actually works with a fluid that gets thicker when it heats up. So if there is a difference in speed between the front and rear tires, the fluid will heat up and lock the rear tires to the front. When it cools back down, the locking function goes away again. This all happens really quickly.
The best AWD I ever driven was 1996 Subaru Justy 1.3 with 68hp. I think this is the only car where where power get distributed 50/50. Amazing how old AWD sistem worked. On ice and snow this small car was a blast compared to new cars and SUV.
I wanted one of these so bad when i was in my teens. I grew up restoring old Air cooled VW's and the FL heat was not kind to them. That car is gorgeous...
👍 So great to see a Mk2 Rallye being used the way it was intended! I have a lowly FWD GTI, but this is inspiration to get out in the garage and make some progress on it. I have the 400+ HP RWD V8, and that’s fun in its own way, but the GTI is light and low powered enough you can go absolutely hoon in it without getting arrested. 😜
Quite a while back you guys did a video on an a retired Galant VR4 rally car, has there been any updates on that? I have one myself up here in Canada (1915/2000 in 1991) and would love to see some videos on it, you don't get to see much old Galant content around.
Hell yeah! Tim gave a really good impression of how these cars drive and it was fun watching him figure it out. I'd really like to see more of this content--bring on the vintage Audis, the AMX, and that old Mitsubishi y'all have tucked away!
I used to think I wanted a Golf Rallye. Then I got a Lancia Delta Integrale. No comparison in looks or performance. But wow this sure looks good sliding around in the snow.
Hi I’m from Canada and here we got the Passat syncro it’s pretty much the same drive train but in a bigger and heavier car my brother had one and the weak points was the super charger his had a pulley, cam, chip, fuel pressure regulator, air intake kit I was powerful the torque was amazing when the supercharger lasted and a other thing that was weak was the 2 drive shaft support bearings the golf Rallye was my dream car when I was younger I would like one with TDI or 2,0 litres CCTA gas engine.
Love to see a Rally Golf being properly used. And I like the Syncro action. I've been perfecting my Syncro snow skills in my VR6 Syncro for four years now. But since we don't get much snow where I live, playtime is kinda limited by that...
Just came home from messing around on snowy roads with my E46 325i. That open diff sure made it interesting lol. When just the inner tire spins and the outer one still grips, you get that slow rotation, and once the outer one lets go you sure go sideways quick and hard :D So yeah, not as old, not as weird, but I definetely agree that messing around with "suboptimal" material can be very fun in a different way!
Any way you guys could do a video on pickup trucks with respect to the differences between 2wd with snow tires versus 4wd with all terrains or all seasons? I have a 2wd truck and have yet to need snow tires, but I’d love to see if there is a need to get 4wd just for the few potentially snowy or icy days where I’m at, or if some non-studded snow tires would get me through. Not much context on the topic out there to reference.
The Syncro is not a true permanent 4x4. Basically, is a FWD, with the rear wheel drive engaged by a viscous joint. Nowadays the jount has been replaced by an Haldex clutch, that is more quick to activate, but the principle is the same.
Very nice video, congratulations! The delayed engaging, is a characteristic which allows the smooth activation of the rear, (or the front in a Vanagon Syncro), differential, in a manner that, after many thousands of kilometers on/off road, (but not for races), the kinematic chain remains in a perfect condition, without any need for repairs, which is not the case for many other 4x4/4wd/awd systems. On the other hand, for the daily driver, this is not a problem at all, since the Syncro system offers added safety in turns or where and when needed, without driver's intervention. @Toilet Citchen *like used in STi's... normal 5 spd subaru's have a VC center diff too (normally '50/50' or whatever until getting slip then it can send 80/20 front or rear). This is a pretty standard setup and you don't hear anyone complaining. AFAIK it's not 'on demand' since there is always drive and the older models react without electronic input like the syncro does. 5 speed Subaru's can easily spin 1 front and 1 rear tire as well. The 'symmetrical' awd thing is a marketing term based on the driveshaft length being symmetrical to prevent tq steer. Only STi's have active center diffs and usually front and rear lsd's - making it 'full time 4wd'. Fun fact, my STi was the safest and fastest when in 'auto' mode VS. forcing a setting on the active diff per the conditions. Why? It can change the settings faster than I can in changing conditions and bail me out when I need it with more or less drive... Not much unlike the VC setup in this syncro.
Right - I was thinking of the Golf Limited, which VW Motorsport only made 71 of. It had 210 ps, and was a sleeper with single headlights and no body flairs 😳.

Rare car! Did have the 16V head, or was that the G60 engine??
The same 8v G60 the Corrado came with.
Right - I was thinking of the Golf Limited, which VW Motorsport only made 71 of. It had 210 ps, and was a sleeper with single headlights and no body flairs 😳.
I must have one of those golfs! Awesome vid
