Years ago I was sailing my boat from Tampa to Galveston (winter time) and was overtaken by a blue norther. Sails got blown away, even though we were reefed up. I knew we were going to have to come in and make some repairs. My engine of course was just barely running. Even though I had sailed these water before I had never heard of Port St. Joe. However, it was the closes place around. So I got the chart and headed for this small spit of land on the panhandle ( the forgotten coast) Upon arriving and making our way up the bay to the bride the motor quit and we set the hook. I got on the radio to make a call for help, hopefully a tow up the river. Almost instantly a call came back from the Port ST. Joe Harbor Master. The Harbor Master’s name was Billy Howe. Since in those days Sea Tow and Boats U.S. were not to prevalent on the FORGOTTEN COAST Billy got a friend of his to put his boat in the water and tow us in. For three days Billy drove us around to make repairs. That was the start of a friendship that lasted for many years. What a kind man he was. Needless to say when I was making a trip I would always sail in and give him a call on the VHF and usually we would have dinner. James’s song brings some wonderful memories back to me. I love that little jewel on the coast behind Cape San Blas… R.I.P. Captain Billy…
I went to school with this guy back in '75 and he carried a guitar around with him then 😃 Had no idea he was so brilliant. But he was quiet and always had determination.
This is where I grew up. He did this place justice with this song. It is a beautiful place that is forgotten in many ways, the people are wonderful salt of the earth, but do not insult or patronize them or you will regret it. Apalachicola, used to be world class for oysters and thanks to Georgia’s water management they have killed the fishery. Wewahitchka is a fine town, beautiful swamp lands, lakes and rivers, Wewa as the locals call it is known for Tupelo honey, a unique fine honey that comes from the Tupelo tree that blooms only a few weeks out of the year in the swamps along the river. It is the finest honey in the world, if you drive through Wewa to St. Joe as the song references, be sure to stop at Lanier’s Tupelo honey, it is legit Wewa 4th generation family bee keepers. St. Joe is the big city and brother of Wewa. I grew up scalloping in the bay even once in a tropical storm with my brother and best friend, it was before they days of smart phones, although we were curious as to why the bay was empty. It was great until the wind started carrying out anchored boat away. Thank you Mr. McMurtry for a wonderful song about a place I love.
All these places are familiar to me. I've walked those beaches, spent time living and working in Eastpoint, Carabelle and Apalach. Even the Island is there and the lovely old graveyard where my mom is buried. Thanks for paying homage. Beautiful place and people!
Rachel Everett I have fished this whole coast all of my life. Nice trout and redfish. But don't forget the damned yellow flies those bastards have steel jaws.
Rachel, where exactly is this graveyard? I thought it was the one in Apalachicola just off 98 but I actually went to find the headstone he stood by and couldn't find it. A large part of this video was shot at mashes sands and bald point in wakulla/Franklin County it looks like. Would love to know where the graveyard is!
Brother I got to say ACE approves highly of this song and yes I disappeared for a week and no one found me till I wanted em too. Carrabelle Florida is my stomping ground
Shhhhh, James....we want that coast to stay "forgotten".....it's so lovely and wild there! Woke up early one morning to go take pix - and only me and a jogger were on the beach! Good song, btw...... ;)

Don't you see? nobody but you gives a shit ... everybody want's to be special because of a moment they had with a person of fame that they met, a special experience that they had ... but in fact nobody cares, why? because ... like you, they are all SELF focussed. Everyone wants to claim some unique moment in time where thy had an encounter with a person of fame ... it' a totally self aggrandizing indulgence. It's best to forget it and move on ...

Franklin County Florida, also known as Florida's Forgotten Coast, is nestled in the panhandle of the Sunshine State. This beautiful region has been dubbed the Forgotten Coast because it's the last remaining stretch of unspoiled, pristine Gulf Coast beaches that haven't been overrun by high rises and strip malls.
