Lyrics:
When I get to heaven, I'm gonna shake God's hand
Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand
Then I'm gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band
Check into a swell hotel; ain't the afterlife grand?
And then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
'Cause this old man is goin' to town
Then as God as my witness, I'm gettin' back into showbusiness
I'm gonna open up a nightclub called "The Tree of Forgiveness"
And forgive everybody ever done me any harm
Well, I might even invite a few choice critics, those syph'litic parasitics
Buy 'em a pint of [?] and smother 'em with my charm
'Cause then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
Yeah this old man is goin' to town
Yeah when I get to heaven, I'm gonna take that wristwatch off my arm
What are you gonna do with time after you've bought the farm?
And them I'm gonna go find my mom and dad, and good old brother Doug
Well I bet him and cousin Jackie are still cuttin' up a rug
I wanna see all my mama's sisters, 'cause that's where all the love starts
I miss 'em all like crazy, bless their little hearts
And I always will remember these words my daddy said
He said, "Buddy, when you're dead, you're a dead pecker-head"
I hope to prove him wrong, that is, when I get to heaven
'Cause I'm gonna have a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
Yeah this old man is goin' to town
Yeah this old man is goin' to town
Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

My dad died in February. When planning his memorial service, I went through his playlists to start making a playlist for the memorial. When I opened up the app, this was the last song he had listened to.
It took me three months to work up the courage to listen to it. I was expecting it to be a sad song, and instead was greeted with a joyful song about enjoying things and forgiving people. Which is exactly the kind of thing Dad would have wanted for us. I'm so glad this was the last song he chose to listen to. It feels like it was his way of saying he'll be okay. I miss him so much.
Tonight, I'm having a cocktail of vodka and ginger ale. Here's to you pops.
He would want you to celebrate his life. Sorry for your loss.
AND HERE'S TO YOU SOOZI - THAT WAS A WONDERFUL STORY - LORD BLESS!!!!!!!
I wish I could heart your comment. My dad was born February 29th and he died January the month before he turned 40. He was a leap year baby so that year was going to be extra special we thought. His attitude was at least as happy as this song was. He had a terminal illness but never once did he make it a part of our lives. Our Dad was our dad and we knew he had a ticking time bomb but we didn't know when and he treated it as if he would always be there but gave us so much in the time he had.. He was a huge music person and music even made it to his headstone. He died in 1988. During his funeral I had to leave because I HAD to be anywhere but there. My aunt walked with me in my yard while playing Pink Floyd. I had also lost a sister . She was 15 and had gotten meningitis. All of a sudden. She felt ill and within the weekend she died. When she died my father could not go to her funeral. It was too much and he also walked the yard we lived during her funeral.
When I go to heaven (God willing) I'm gonna tell my Dad I I've been missing him so much and we're gonna have a a double shot of fine Irish whiskey to start things off... Love you Mom and Dad, the two of you are my only Heroes
Vodka and ginger ale, and celebrate👍
Some good comments here, i believe John Prine wrote this song because it's how he felt and what he believed, and if anyone felt the same and it made them happy, he was happy and if you listened and didn't like it l, i doubt he could care less. RIP. Mr Prine.
I still get choked up when I hear him sing. He was more than an entertainer. I was crushed when he passed.
Mom Transcended Dec 23, 2018. This song found me a few days after her service for the first time. John was our guy. Anytime we rode together..She would have the CD Ready to go. And we would sing. Just like when I was a kid. This one helped me so damn much. I laughed till I cried. She had metastatic Lung cancer and quit smoking. So She Definitely Smoke a Cigarette 9 miles long.. probably 2😂.
She sent me a message this morning..and this song popped right back in my head.
It's fitting that He moved on shortly after. She still sings with me. Damn I miss our laughing till we need inhailers..
We talked every single day for hours about the dumbest shit..Love &Hugs to all of you who know. And to all of you who dont. Treasure Every Single Second Like we did. ❤
My wife passed December 26th 2018. I’m sure she held on till after Christmas so it wouldn’t ruin future holidays.
"More blessings than one man can stand" is damn right. This guy brought so much joy to people through his music and his stories

This is for all of those grieving in the comment section: no one ever truly dies. Your loved one is present, talk to them, they will talk back within their own capacity. That may be though the remembrance of a song, the appearance of a butterfly, or even finding a penny with their birth year or something along those lines. They are here helping you move mountains. Try to think of them as part of your spiritual team of protection.
My mom passed 3 days ago. It's 4 am and I've been sitting up all night listening to old songs she loved. I know John Prine was one of her favorites, and this one popped up in my feed. This guy's making some complicated tears come out right now. What a storyteller.
I listen to this when I'm missing my dad... he passed due to covid july 24th. gives me happy tears instead of sad. Im here at least once a week. 🙏
So sorry about your mom, truly love lasts forever, she and John are having a blast right now enjoying each other's company singing and laughing, spirits never die
Hey man, sorry...
Sincere condolonces may you get thru these next few months with peace n comfort n Lil love from above God bless
In 2019 my mom was killed in a car wreck five days before Christmas. The good Lord and John Prine’s music are about the only things that got me through those dark days. May our moms Rest In Peace.
My dad just passed on August 10th. He had blood cancer. Had a bone marrow transplant in May that failed. Every complication he could have gotten, he did. From the chemo, from the transplant, from the lack of immune system. He got a booster transplant in June and that also failed. He was living through hell. He had one last chance of trying a third transplant of cord blood, but his liver started failing and the doctor had to take that option off the table. They loaded him up with an extra unit of blood and gave him a life expectancy of 4-5 days. Oddly enough, he seemed happier after hearing that. Knowing that his suffering would soon be over. He was a prine fan for as long as I can remember. We listened to this song several times in those last 4-5 days, along with so many other great Prine songs. He made it to day 6... my dad never was one to follow rules. I have a little peace knowing he is up there helping John with that 9 mile long cigarette... exchanging stories and having a hell of a party.
Rest in peace Dad. "If you aren't livin on the edge, you're taking up space" 💗
My pastor often told us the Lord has a sense of humor, and even showed us some passages where it was evident. Now, I can just picture John standing before the Lord. The Lord instantly makes John to feel comfortable. And, with a Divine sly smile, begins to pull out from a pocket a nine mile long cigarette...
" When I get to Heaven " was the first song I listened to after hearing of Johns death. This Viet Nam vet isn't too proud to admit that I was sitting there laughing and crying at the same time. Love you, John.

He was the real deal,,maybe Goodman and he can send a new song into the universe 😊

I’ve only recently discovered John and his music and I’m hooked! Haven’t heard a song that I dislike and I’m pretty sure that I won’t! Wish I’d discovered him sooner 😢
Maybe John Prine has never been a big star, but he's never been anything less than a colossal talent. He's made this old world a better place.
AMEN!
You know him and I know him that is what John wants
Proud to be a member of the same species.
He even has a lot of fans in the Netherlands. He must be abig star.
Love this song!
Years back somebody signed the guest book at John's website and said, "The last quarter of the 20th century wouldn't have been worth living without John Prine".
It was my dream to see you in concert. That dream was fulfilled in Las Vegas and I got your tree of forgiveness CD absolutely wonderful. You were my best most favorite concert I've ever been to. I came home and started googling to see where we can find you next but you've been gone all over the place way too far away. Well now you're in heaven and you've shaken God's hand. Bless you Dear John Prine you will be missed more than you will ever know. Rest in Peace the whole world will miss you so much. And Bless you Mrs. Prine you're suffering a huge loss. Love to you both.💖💕❤️
He didn’t write this song for himself. He wrote it for us, so we’d be able to deal with his passage.
Yes, and also so we would live life to the fullest while we are still here.
Funny, I’ve always felt that all of his songs were for us, just us. Since 1971 🤠
@@Dr.Catacus He wrote them for us because he couldn't hold it all inside himself
Damn. It sure does feel that way. This song gives me a smile, a belly laugh, and more than a few tears. Thank you John. Hope when it's my time, it's as wonderful as you described it. RIP.
I'll join him in that 9 mile long cigarette.
Who can hardly imagine one man making millions of people reflective, kind and mainly happy? For all these years?
I don't have to imagine that at all.
I just say, "Yeah, John Prine does that."
Been binge watching and binge listening and binge strumming John's songbook all week.
Get well John. Peace and patience brother.
Rest in peace Mr Prine 💔 we howled at the full moon tonight to mourn your passing. 😢
Woke up with a tear this morning. Didnt understand what was up untill i checked the news. Have a ball sir, you've been waiting.
John
I hope you and your mom and dad, brother Doug, cousin Jackie and your mom's sisters are all rejoicing in heaven
I'll look you up when I get there. Thanks for the great music
Stood at the back door in Missoula, Montana waiting to get a John Prine autograph but didn’t see him. I’m 75 years old and normally wouldn’t walk across the street to watch Jesus build a pyramid so?.
This Christian thinks that is one of the best descriptions of the great future we have. Thank you Mr. Prine. I'd like to play bass in your heavenly rock'n roll band
John I have listened to your wonderful Music since the early part of 1971. And I'll see you at the four way stop Delimia.
The first time I heard of John Prine he sang a on a little song called Sweet Suzanne. I knew most the other singers in Buzzin Cousins but not JP. Later when Napster was big I listened to a TON of his music. What a great song writer singer and comedian. No one can make you laugh and cry like this guy.
45 year old grown an and I just cried on the way home from work..The world is going to miss you John! RIP 💔
Same here! You aren't human if you don't cry once in a while!!
Hang in there, John. Heaven can wait a while longer.
Oh my god yes
Dustin Stevenson, I hear you.
Fuck COVID
I am with you all. Fight this John!
Yes, heaven can wait. We need you here. Xo
Johnny Prine was an absolute original! God rest his soul. 🇺🇸🗽🦅🙏💙💪😇🤠
I won’t say RIP John because I know he’s not resting right now. He’s in heaven right now drinking vodka smoking a 9 mile long cigarette and hanging out with his family, he’s busy hosting the tree of forgiveness, He’s with his band playing for god, and most of all he’s gunna kiss that pretty girl. We miss you John.
It’s not your when yet John. You’ve got to fight the good fight one more time with all of us behind you. Bless you and you’re loved ones. Peace.

Just heard the sad news of John Prine passing. So, so sad. Stay safe everyone. God bless us all. My first boyfriend played a pretty good Sam Stone so long ago.
A beautiful soul and a national treasure
When it’s my time, I can’t wait to meet you, John. I saw you when you were first starting out at a small venue in Memphis, and I’ve never forgotten it. God bless you, and I’ll hug you instead of shake your hand when I get there!
JP is a fucking national treasure! I'm glad I was alive in his time. He's a songwriter's songwriter.
John missed his brother Doug, who died in 2012 of liver cancer after a career as a Chicago cop. I guess John's gonna get to see Doug again, when he gets to Heaven.
Thank-you for not saying cigarette. HAPPY EASTER✌🙏🙏💔💛💚
I hope you found all your family, and I hope you've got that cocktail in your hand, John. We're gonna miss you down here though.
R.I.P John..Thank you for all of the music, humor, and quirkiness. Hope to play tambourine in your band when I get there.
I absolutely love that you can hear baby noises in the background of this song
John Prine, one of the most underrated musicians who kept our neighbors up while we kept partying away! Grandpa was a carpenter ( mine was), Please don't bury me, Sam Stone, Illegal Smile, anything off the Sweet Revenge album, the list goes on....Hang in there John, you haven't written one about how much Disco sucked yet! Looking at my torn and tattered Sweet Revenge album how I wish I had a turn table, the scratches in it reminds me of a better time. Thank you John and please get well

I remember standing in a field in Somerset Kentucky with 12,000 other people listening to John sing this song,... man was it awesome!
Mr. Prine, I'm sad that I never got to attend your concerts. Gosh darn I enjoyed your albums. Thank you for those albums, Sir.
Enjoy Heaven.
My dad would always play Prine when we were little, usually on our way to our camping trips. I couldn’t stand the sound. He was just some old geezer that my dad listened to. But I some point when I grew into my teenage years. Maybe because I started listening to the words instead of tuning out. Then out of nowhere I was convinced John was my favorite artist. I am 21 now and my sweet girlfriend got me tickets to my first concert on may 23rd for his Louisville concert. I am heartbroken I couldn’t see him before he passed. But i am blessed to know a wonderful artist. I hope his family are okay, just one request for them, please don’t bury him down in the cold cold ground!
Hey your not alone because I was the same way.
Now that I'm a little older and hopefully a little wiser I love it and yes I even like county music.
His Wikipedia says “In accordance with Prine's wishes as expressed in his song "Paradise", half of his ashes were spread in Kentucky's Green River. The other half were buried next to his parents in Chicago.”
I hope that’s true. Having a cocktail tonight for ole Prine.
Same for me, I remember my dad dragging my sister and I somewhere. And I remember “I got rocks in my pockets and dirt in my shoes”. I’m now 36 and John Prine is a huge part of my life. Thanks dad...

Great memories.
Charles Freudemann My Dad loved John Prine as well. My first live concert was 20 years ago in Fort Worth, TX at the Bass City Music Hall. Buckwheat Zydeco opened for him and when they were finished, John Prine came on and all I wanted to do was drink beer and tell stories with him. So sad he passed and you didn’t get to see him. My Dad passed away a few years ago and I know they’re hanging out...pickin and a grinnin’ lol
I cannot begin to understand the emotions John's wife feels when she plays this album after John's passing, love, pride, devotion and so many more memories,God bless you John.

I believe you're doing just that, beloved Mr. Prine.
"Those syphilitic parasitics" I think John Prine is the greatest !!!
I miss John Prine like crazy.
The late John Prine was a masterful songwriter. And now that he's in heaven he'll be able to entertain God and the Angels, forever.
About now, God is on the receiving end of that grateful handshake John promised Him. I hope He likes it. I only learned of John 2 years ago. Since then I scoured UA-cam of all the videos I could find of him. I'm both sad for the many years I've lived without the enjoyment of John's songs and thankful for the years to come after now learning of him. In spite of himself, he ended up a sittin on a rainbow... Ol,. Sarge...
Shake gods hand John. And do everything you described in this song. You were a wonderful man and brought by Chappys to millions condolences to the Prine family he will be missed terribly
as soon as i turned on john prines station after his passing this came on. I had never heard it. it touched me.
We have lost John, but his spirit, his poetry, and sense of humor will be with us as long as we have these electrical devices. We however will not have any more creations by John. My prayers are with you Fiona and family. I think you lost a wonderful man.
Did he get that cigarette that’s nine miles long? We will never know.
He's over that cigarette.
If Thomas Aquinas heard this song, he would say it is proof of the existence of God.
The 6th proof.
Well said Carl.
Went to John Prine concert three days ago in the Chicago area. He sang this song as his encore. What a great concert. He sang for 1.75 hours straight!
Mr JP, you made me cry when you were here and now when you ain’t. Thank you for thousands of hours of my favorite music listening. Since 1972!
RIP John & thanks for givin' what you gave us. It makes this ride a little less bumpy.

This great songwriter has met God now. Much respect.
Rest in peace, John. Enjoy that 9 mile long cigarette.
Legends don't die, just hit play.
Guess you're finally there, writing & singing with the angels, John. May you forever rest in the sweetest peace.
Very Sad today to hear our Johnny did not make it. We saw him last in concert in Tucson, AZ & he sang this song. My very favorite song is Hello In There- that I first heard when it came out in the 1970s & saw him in concert back then...- this song became my life's philosophy - say hello in there to all... cause everyone is lonely soul. He had such a way with words..... thank God we have his albums and these videos too remember him always
That’s my favorite of him as well but I think it is difficult to chose one song from his entire discography to be honest. When did you discover him?
Nothing makes me tear up and smile at the same like ol JP, especially this song.
I can't believe he's really gone. Well, gone from here and now up there. Enjoy that cocktail and long-ass cigarette, John, with God as your witness.

What a fucking great song about afterlife. You always knew how to make me smile with your songs mr. Prine. Hope you're in heaven with all your loved ones who've passed away.
John's idea of heaven was just doing what he enjoyed on earth. Where all sins have been forgiven and there's no harm anymore in having a good time. Who's going to say he's wrong? Miss you John, you always made me smile.
Thanks John, playing this song on loop tonight with a cocktail - a vodka and ginger ale. Gonna miss you like crazy.
I didn’t know of John until his passing unfortunately. My favorite John Prine song is always the next one I hear
I’m crying! You will be missed Mr. Prine!
My heart has shattered in 99 pieces,
A very good man has left us alone,
His body was broken,
Yet the words he has spoken,
Will comfort our souls,
And help us go on.
R.I.P. Mr. Prine.

RIP John Prine, your up there enjoying yourself. Hope to see you someday...
Rip John, I'm sure you're in heaven right now. Having a vodka ( sorry, didn't have ginger ale on hand ) as a salute to you and all your great music, been a fan forever. Thank you, Godspeed John.
Praying for John Prine.
There's not many songs that can bring me to tears, but most of them are John Prine songs and definitely this one does today.
Crying tonight
I’ve taught classes about you, Kilgore. Nice to meet you.
John Prine and Tom Waits...
I came here to get a break from all the doom and gloom we're facing. Only John could put a smile on my face by singing a song about dying.
