I think 4-6 month unpaid internship is... disgusting to be honest. I understand that everyone needs to gain some experience, but working for free for 6 months?? That's very exploitative. Not to mention, not everyone can afford that, and only privileged individuals can work for free for this long amount of time (for example, living with parents, or someone who had a chance to save some money beforehand). I went to college for Graphic Design and I only needed 3 weeks of internship thankfully. Also, lucky me, the company paid me minimum wage at least, and then they hired me after this little amount of time. I don't think you need 6 months to see if someone is good for a job. I would say even 1-2 months is enough.
I've heard cases where someone worked for free for that long and actually benefitted from it because the knowledge they gained was more valuable in the long run. Where I work, one intern we have that is paid told us how her friend got fired after the internship she was at gave her terrible tasks (literally just used her for a coffee run). She confronted them about being upset she wasn't getting marketing work and they decided to let her go. One of the co-owners in my current job felt bad but said all he can offer is something unpaid since really, they are a small business and can only afford me and one intern so if she needed something for the remainder, he can provide that at least. It was a short time so maybe some will think it's fine but she still survived an internship, college, and a paying job. She was given a hybrid type of roll too so she could commute to her paying job while doing her hours here. To say privileged would be a dishonor to the ones who have done it for a time. I've met college students who have to balance being parents as well as working and going to school. Three huge responsibilities and they still manage to make it out fine. One guy I worked with on a project had parents who didn't even support him and had to balance his airport security job while going to school. School wasn't even a thing he had to do, it was to prove to himself he can succeed and to show his parents that he is capable of what he sets his mind to. Of course it isn't easy but life isn't easy. Also what is more exploitive, working in the field for those six months gaining real experience and opportunities or spending thousands on tuition and having to repay that debt?
Thank you so much Elena. Your story is very inspiring. I am an aspiring digital marketer too and I learn so much from one video. You motivate me even more to continue my journey
