    I've got one on order. You get far more than leather ( not actually leather ) seats for the extra £2000. You also get.........Panoramic Sky Roof, rain sensor wipers, blind spot detector, rear cross traffic alert, 6 speaker 3D sound, rear parking camera, electric adjustable drivers seat, heated front seats, roof rails , air Conditioning with odour and pollutant filter and electrically Adjustable, Folding, Heated, Body Colour Door Mirrors.
    Worth paying that extra i think.

      Although I have an e-Niro, I think your recommendation to go for the higher spec version is absolutely correct and was something I was going to suggest until I read your post. What a shame to miss out on all those extras for the sake of £2K. Ryan will save considerably more than that by simply switching to the MG.

      If there is one mistake MG have made with this car it’s their marketing. It is so difficult to find the full EV related specs anywhere. They should be shouting about it in my opinion!!

      @@EVOpinion perhaps MG will let their customers do the work for them once they own the cars. Word of mouth and social Media has to be the best way to sell any product. I think this car could give the more expensive EV's a bit of a headache. And not before time. The EV market needs to move down market price wise to encourage take up. Then we can all reap the benefits of EV ownership. The government will of course find a way to mess it all up by some form of taxation to replace the billions of lost fuel duty. But then, they are professional liars and thieves who aren't really interested in saving our environment for future generations are they? Full 20% VAT on solar panels? What a clever way to encourage folk to buy them. They should be mandatory on all new builds and VAT free. Sorry for the rant, but the hypocrisy of our democratically elected lords and masters ( our servants) really pi**** me off

    I think you need to wait until next Spring to see what is currently in the pipeline. By then you’ll know from reviews if the MG is any good or not and whether Nissan still even exists. I am in the 2nd 1000 and have ordered the Exclusive...love that sunroof...btw the seats are 'vegan leather' :) so basically vinyl.
    If they keep on extending the 1st 1000 deposits thing to 1st 3000, 1st 4000 etc they may as well just reduce the rrp...I remember buying a drone about 3 or 4 years ago (Yuneec Typhoon H) and being one of the pre order ones got a few bonus extras....when it actually went on sale it had been uprated and was even better and the same price as the 'discounted' pre orders which was annoying.

    I think the Chademo point is huge. And the MG is affordable for an EV. I don’t think I would be worried about long term ownership of a car like this. They must have made tons of these already in China under one of their other brands.

    Hi Ryan, like another comment, I saw the MG at the British Motor Museum Festival of Electric Vehicles at Gaydon. I was very impressed with the apparent quality of the MG. The price seems a real bargain when you see what you're getting.
    I also saw a fairly new Leaf and the current ZE40 Zoe (which is in a similar price band to the MG), but it felt as though you would be getting a lot more if you went for the MG.

      I see a lot of people saying that the MG ZS EV is a bargain, and that it is priced too cheap and it must be too good to be true.
      But in reality I don't see it that way, I think a lot of the new EVs are considerably overpriced, if we consider the exchange of the engine, gearbox, radiators and everything else from an ICE, to the batteries, the motor and all other stuff the EV needs to run, there shouldn't be such a huge difference in price as we are currently seeing with most EVs on the market.
      for example the new ZOE, it's available without the battery cost in it, as it comes with a battery lease, and that is priced somewhere around £22,000 just for the car, but if this car was an ICE, they would have a really hard time selling it at that price. And if we compare it with the Clio which starts at around £14,000 although they aren't the same car, I would say the ZOE is very overpriced as a car already, and when we add the cost of the battery than it gets really expensive.
      To me it's just a mater of offer and demand, and to be honest there isn't a huge demand for electric cars, not in the 2 or 5 or 10 million per year demand, but with such a low offer in the EVs, both in numbers and variety, that the manufacturers just can charge as much as they want.
      In conclusion I believe the MG ZS EV is very well spec'd and not overpriced, at least with this launch offer. And the 7 year warranty just gives you some peace of mind regarding reliability.

    Chinese products have proven to be just like any other product on the market.......some good some bad.....I have some I can't tell you how old and still work well today.
    The cooling system also makes sense and I am surprised that Nissan has not addressed the proven use of a cooling system for the batteries.

I have also placed a deposit of a £500 for an Exclusive model, although I have been quoted a March 2020 delivery. I am also not yet entirely committed to the purchase. But considering that the MG is less than when I bought mine 2 years ago I think they will sell like hot cakes in Nov when people like you who have bought one let's every one else know what they can get for the money and have no problems. As you said at the start of the film - at that price it’s too good an offer to refuse! A £21k OTR price and delivery within a month is unmatched by any other provider so I’d say “go for it”. As yourself and others have said, BEVs are much simpler vehicles that ICE cars so I’m guessing the “unproven” element should be less of an issue, particular as it’s using battery and motor technologies that are “proven”. Let’s all hope that this move by MG helps to encourage a reduction in the cost of BEVs more generally.

In a few years, after the incentives have gone away, the resale value of that car will be comparable to the price you paid for it (before VAT of course). If they were offering this car in Canada with the same incentives I think it would be my choice rather than waiting for the Kona. I say go for it, it's available and it saves the effort you would have to put in to find a decent used Leaf.

I’ll be honest, I’ve just had an i3s on test for 3 days, loved it and will be placing an order this week. But, my wife is really keen on an EV, doesn’t want to spend BMW money and wants conventional doors and more space so have to say that the MG looks a really good option for us. We’ve had an MG many moons ago and wasn’t impressed with the quality but it was a long time ago and it’s definitely worth a serious look, especially at that price point. It looks great IMO and with that warranty I think you should consider it over the leaf, if the initial reviews are right then it could be a great buy. I’ve put a deposit down too for the exclusive in red. I popped in the dealer to have a look at the petrol version and it’s a gorgeous red. The interior was very good and I thought excellent boot space. Slightly less in the EV with the seats down.
    One thing I will say is my dealer has told me MG have said to them they will be the first or one of the first in the country to get a demo car and that’s not arriving until October! So unless they expect to buy it without a test drive can’t imagine many having their hands on it in September?
    I say go for it. The biggest complaints about the petrol MG was it’s engines but that element is out of the way now. There was some issues with rust ( one guy even created a website about the hassles he’s had ) but I’m hoping the quality control will have been ironed out with the petrol model.
    For me it’s an EV that ticks almost every box ( a little more range and towing would have been good ) and it’s time for me to jump in I feel for my first EV!

    You're taking the right steps Ryan. Test drive the MG when you can, check the real world highway range - hopefully not too far off that of the LEAF 40. Thermal management should help battery life last longer than the LEAF, but in the mild UK that's not a huge issue anyway. The key advantage there is having no charge throttling, and thus consistently quick charging times whatever use case you occasionally ask of it.
    Have a look at general reliability ratings on all the recent MG models since SAIC ownership. It's likely not an issue, but having that info may give you some peace of mind.
    Take the test drive and see which of the two is more livable for your family overall. The used LEAF 40 prices won't change too much over the coming months, so take your time to make the right decision. Keep up the great work.

However if I was deciding now knowing that there's a car out there that's alot cheaper and similar spec I would be happy to buy it. Go for it Ryan and if we meet up sometime at an EV event we can kick each others tyres and debate the merits of each others choices.

    Dont go down the Nissan path. Its Chademo - no active cooling - essentially the same chasis that already have - and Nissan is not treating their customers well.
    We can't get the MG at the continent yet - but don't worry about the Chinese. As long as the NCAP is OK I doubt you will see more issues than with a Nissan. You might need to tolerate a bit more hard plastic - a little more rattle - but at that price go for the MG.
    And the Chinese build quite many European branded cars now - for that matter a lot of branded consumer items that you would expect to be of Western origin.
    Personally I dug deep and my dream car has been outside my house now for a week - Model 3 Long Range awd - but that is at another price level.... cant stop smiling....

      Perhaps things are different in mainland Europe, but I think Chademo will be around in the UK for quite a while yet, as there are a lot of Leafs about over here. I think the fact that the new BP Chargemaster 150 kW chargers that have just started rolling out in the UK have both Chademo and CCS supports my point. It’s only Ionity AFAIK that are only supporting CCS going forward. Also I’m not sure active (liquid) cooling as used in the MG is as great as people claim - for one thing it’s an extra complication that requires extra maintenance and for another, what is the risk of coolant getting into your battery pack and causing major problems?

    • @renebergqvist599
      @renebergqvist599 5 років тому

      @@davidprescott7463 Sure the old Chademo chargers (usually combo with CCS and AC) will remain - but the new chargers like Ionity are CCS only.
      All the destination chargers are of course type 2 and can be used by EV's.
      I dont think you risk having no rapid chargers by choosing a Leaf - Chademo just wont be that widespread as CCS and when replaced they likely wont be combo chargers anymore... unless Nissan starts to invest (as if).

    The Chinese MG's have still been designed / developed in Longbridge (Birmingham) to get that European product feel and then manufactured in China. The petrol version of this car has been out for approx 18 months in the UK, and the battery supplier (CATL) produce the cells for the China manufactured BMW PHEVs, along with the 7 year warranty.
    A work colleague has a petrol MG ZS (paid 18k! !!) And he's very happy with the car.
    So for myself (also a leaf owner with a paid deposit) all the important stuff I'm worried about I can address, so it comes down to having a test drive - seeing what the final production cars are like, getting the final spec (does it have a heat pump for cabin heating, delayed charge scheduling etc) and seeing what the first full reviews are like to confirm the initial good impression is still correct.
    I'm confident I'll like the final car (as the black pre prod version at Gaydon was surprisingly impressive) - it's just the final test drive to confirm it i do actually like it.

I got my £500 on the order book for a red Exclusive it was a no brainer as I have a £500 deposit on an eNiro since Feb 17th and the order form said a delivery date of 17th July but I've still haven't go anything more than a vague indication of delivery sometime in 2019. Since I was told I'd be given 1 to 2 months notice of delivery for a similar-sized and spec'ed car (other than battery capacity and range) why should I wait and pay £10,000 more for the Kia with the early order discount? Even without the extra £3,500 discount is it really worth paying £7,500 for 100 miles extra range?

    Hi Ryan, we’re big fans of your channel and were hoping you and your knowledgeable subscribers might be able to help with our dilemma. We’ve just sold our 24kWh Leaf (we loved it and it suited 95% of our driving needs over the past couple of years but we wanted a bit more range) and are now in the process of deciding between a 40kWh Leaf and the MG Vs EV (deposit paid). The Leaf we’ve found is a Jan 2018 ex-demo model from an official Nissan dealership with ~5500 miles and has only been registered with them (2018 plate). They’re offering a very good deal of £20K for the car, and of course it still has most of the the manufacturer’s warranty intact.
    We love the Leaf and it’s a tried and trusted car. However, we also fancy trying the new but as yet unproven MG. Like you, do we upgrade to the 40kWh Leaf which will no doubt suit 100% of our driving needs or get the new MG for only £3.5K more (we’ve opted for executive model)?
    Any thoughts from you or your esteemed readers would be much appreciated!

    • @davidprescott7463
      @davidprescott7463 5 років тому

      As a fellow leaf owner (30 kWh), I have been thinking what my next car would be eventually. When the MG ZS EV was announced, it did seem an interesting car. However, as you say, it is unproven and there are question marks about it being raised such as whether or not it has charge and heating timers built in, will there be an app, do the cars rust in the 1st year etc? I would suggest you try and find out whether the MG has the features you really need in an EV or not, then take a test drive and go from there. The 40 kWh Leaf you are looking at sounds like a good deal though, and is more of a known quantity than the MG. I really can’t advise you what to do without knowing your particular circumstances, but after much consideration I came to the conclusion I would be best to go for the 40 kWh Leaf at some stage as I can be fairly confident it will be a solid car, especially now the rapid gate issues have been apparently resolved. Hope that’s some help.

    I've watched about 6 video on MG EV, 3 of them have been test driven. Most I've watched have been very positive first impression reviews, especially with top model. IF MG can mass produce this SUV EV then in my opinion its going to be first mass ordered car other than TESLA. Unlike Niro/Kona. I hope it sells exsteamily well.

    Go for the MG as Nissan are loosing interest in the car products that have been a market leader but no more. It is looking likly that battery warranty may be come an issue before my Leaf 8 years is up as it has lost 12% SOH at 24000. I understand all the MG cars on show and at the dealers at this time are slightly diffent from the production vehicles on a ship and due to land very soon so I would say try to get a look at some of the models off this first boat before you commit to handing over your cash.

    • @AlainSylvestre

    It seems small minded but the lack of climate control in the MG rules it out for me. It’s one of those luxuries we’ve got used to that makes driving pleasant rather than continually fiddling with the heater. Also did someone say it has a filament heater rather than a heat pump. This will hit the range if so. I’m a 30kW Leaf owner. Not sure if I’d buy one of the latest ones. Although the Ioniq often gets forgotten. Thermal battery management and ccs charging. About the same size as the leaf and proven quality.

  • @RWBHere
    @RWBHere 5 років тому

    I'm with you about the MG, Ryan. The price is right. The badge is largely irrelevant. Yes, it's made in China so the build quality is a concern, but the Chinese are making more EV's than any other country, therefore they know how to build them properly. Sure, it's unproven, and you will be an early adopter, therefore you will have the disadvantages that the wrinkles will need ironing out, and that upgraded technologies might be implemented quickly. It's a very tempting price, however, and that would make me tolerant of having to spend money on it, once the warranties have run out.
    One thing I'm not clear about is the range of the car. We need a guaranteed 120+ miles of midwinter range, to cover our essential journeys with a scarcity of decent charging stations around here. So in reality, we're looking out for 180 to 200 miles of claimed range.
    In terms of price, we would be considering either a Zoe or the MG, since we have no family to carry around, and any decent small electric car at the right price would suit our needs, if it has an endurance to suit our needs. A large EV is also impractical here, because of limited on-street parking spaces. And a 40 kWh Leaf is barely on the radar these days, partly because I'm not a fan of the shape, partly because of the price, but also because of the very real concerns about the lack of Customer Care.
    Thanks for asking, and thanks for the video.

    Hope the MG works well for you. Looking forward to the purchased review. Nissan and Evgo just announced a new Chademo build out in the US. For those of us in cooler climates, the liquid cooled battery is a bit less of a concern. Its rarely over 32 degrees in Chicago and much of the year under 10 C. The Plus has much better heat capacity then the 40, so looking at review in the UK to see how those experiences stand up. The Chinese vehicle I would like to see in the US is the NIO ES 8 as with 3 teenagers, I really need a 3rd row if taking the whole family more than 10 miles away. For 4, the Leaf is a perfectly sized car. We have done a few 500+ mile road trips in the new Plus (with runs over 240 miles on a charge) without issue. (thermal, range, or otherwise). The new charge capacity is also very good. I have charged on some of the new Chademo's being installed at a rate of over 70 KW/hour. Happy hunting with the new car, how ever you choose.

      I have a PHEV Outlander, my Mitsubishi dealer is also an MG Dealer so I took a look at the ZS - Very Surprised! My PHEV is nearly twice the price of the ZS and the quality difference was negligible! Also they give me an MG3 when I service the PHEV and it's really fun to drive (ICE aside) - Forget what you've heard; things have changed. MG blinked first, now I think the race is really on.
