The Mars Volta is one of the most mind boggling bands that i’ve ever listened to. The modern prog-rock band from El Paso, Texas has its roots in previous bands like the short lived dub band De Facto and the post-hardcore band At the drive-in. With Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez Lopez being the key members that eventually shaped The Mars Volta. Paper BG.
The band was formed in 2001 and has over the span of a little over a decade released some of the most genre-bending and other-worldly rock albums there is to find. De-Loused in the Comatorium their debut record from 2003 is their most successful one commercially and the one most fans look to as their most critical release. It also seems to be one of the more meaningful albums for the band because it was meant to preserve and honour the memory of their friend Julio Venegas, who sadly committed suicide at a very young age. Talking head.
But the album represents so much more than the homage to their friend. It’s also a punctuation in the story of their previous band At the drive-in. An opportunity to shamelessly showcase their latin-american roots. And on a grander scale, a documentation of what musicians are capable of doing when pushing themselves to the edge.

I was fortunate enough to see The Mars Volta live in 2005* when I was 13, they opened for System of a Down. It was the best show I ever experienced. Their set was so impressive. I named my daughter Mars.

I saw that show too. It was a good show for sure. It was the first time I'd seen SOD after they had mainstream success, I had seen them years before opening for Incubus back when Incubus was ouring for the science album, ie that one album where they were badass, before they started to suck. At that time both these bands were obscure, it was a small venue with maybe 500 people in the audience. Now THAT was a good show, most people don't believe there was a time when Incubus was heavy enough, and good enough, to have SOD open for them. It was just that one album, but they were awesome, and so was SOD.its hard to believe it but that was more than 20 years ago.
As a drummer, The Mars Volta significantly changed how I play. Their use of dynamics is staggering and they really push the envelope of what's capable.
Same here, found them around my early teen years, they snapped me out of my metal phase and I was launched into the world of prog and math rock and beyond. Changed my whole music taste and approach to drums and rhythm
Jon Theodore is a beast, I love playing along with Deloused and Francis. They should have never let him go.

That's so cool. I was wondering if it was one of the band members. Their songs are difficult, but fun to learn on guitar. I can only imagine how it must be for a drummer.

I remember when I was a little girl I worked cleaning wood shavings out of a cabinet shop to buy myself Frances The Mute. It was my first cd and still a favorite. I pushed myself in my singing to reach Cedrics level in Frances, and still sing to this day.

I saw Mars Volta open for System of a Down at the Oracle Arena (rip) in Oakland. When Francis the Mute came out. And opening for them was Hella, Zach Hill's primary band before Death Grips.
Yo, I remember the Vegoose festival in Vegas back in 2007. I saw Blonde Redhead, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, and Daft Punk.

I was fortunate to see them a bunch of times (one of the few bands that toured Australia regularly) my favourite performance of theirs was at Big day Out Festival they played a really longversion of Drunkship of Lanterns it was fantastc.
I can also remember I saw them at Hordern Pavillion a few years later (no opening act jut them playing for about 2.5 hours) they played an awesome version of Miranda from Frances the Mute at that show.

I never listened to prog rock, then I heard that Flea and John were a big part of The Mars Volta... Now I can play every single song on bass of them. Love them!!
Cool. I think their affiliation with RHCP can help a lot of people get introduced to them. These bands are day and night musically. But if you listen to Frusciante's more experimental solo albums and TMV side by side i think there's some resemblence. The willingness to push the envelope of music.

I'd rip out my kidneys with a gravy ladle just to see TMV perform live for 10 seconds.
I was a fan of At The Drive In, but didnt know much at all about TMV when I saw them open for A Perfect Circle at a small hockey rink in Belgrade MT about 15 years ago. Although Im still not a huge TMV fan, I can say that they were EASILY one of the most entertaining live acts Ive ever seen in my life....and I would lay down money to see them any chance I got. Ive seen The Screaming Trees live, but never caught Fugazi live. The Mars Volta seemed like equal parts of both of those bands when I saw them live. I was out of energy before A Perfect Circle even took the stage.

Amazing live act! Lucky to have caught them 2xs
I saw them both in Mexico and the US, it was fucking surreal. But not gonna lie, seeing them as Antemasque in Mexico was perhaps the best showmanship from Cedric and Omar I have ever seen. Second to that would be seeing them as At the Drive-In in Barcelona, Cedric got really personal with the public even did some crowdsurfing. Also Le Butcherettes opened for them that night.
I’m from El Paso, my brother and his friend took me back in 2007 or 08 as my first concert. With that being said I’ve always high super high standards for any live bands thanks to them lol. Changed my life forever

I didn't get the box set but just grabbed Frances the Mute reissue. So stoked. I left my original copy in my car overnight by accident and it warped to unfixable levels. I've been holding onto that warped vinyl for 10+ years waiting for a reissue.

Yes! My younger brothers put me onto this in like 2008. We were driving around Salt Lake City and on first listen I said what the fuck is this amazing shit? Listened to it nonstop for years.

They opened for the chili peppers during the stadium Arcadium tour and I was really feeling them, but all of a sudden people in the crowd started throwing shit at them. Chairs, bottles etc. Shortly after I was digging into their music. I guess the crowd wasn’t ready for a 45 minute epic

Only known them a few years but I was in my back garden, sat on the swing chair after smoking a joint. The first thing of theirs I heard was Frances the Mute, and i remember the first track starting really quietly so I turned it up and then the song actually kicked in, it gave me a heart attack but a good heart attack :D
Weirdly, I was introduced to The Mars Volta when I was homeless and would draw caricatures outside the local "strip" for money. Anyway I'd often shoplift Mojo or Q magazine if I couldn't get the former to keep up with the music scene (I had a Discman and an old Walkman with me). So I get to meet this bunch of cool kids who were studying in my town, one was this nice Irish kid and we got talking to music when I was drawing him, and he mentioned The Mars Volta. Now I'd recently read a review in Mojo that gave, iirc, Album Of The Month to De-loused, so I said I'd heard of them but not heard the album but it sounded really interesting. He was like "I'll do you a copy for Students Night" (the following Tuesday from the Fridays and Saturdays which were my main working nights where I'd make a decent chunk of change, and Tuesdays were good too). Anyway he came back to his word the following Tuesday and gave me a tape of De-Loused In The Comatorium and, well, that was that. I listened to it solidly for a couple of months...great LP and I'd argue one of the most epochal releases of the new millennium.

Deloused was playing in a record store when I walked in. I listened for maybe 40 seconds, went up to the guy working and asked who it was, he told me, I told him I needed this album.

They're one of my all time favorite bands. So i'll most likely make more videos about them at some point yes ;)
In 2004, four of us bought tickets to see A Perfect Circle play in Indianapolis. None of us listened to At the Drive-In, and we had no idea who this opening band was, The Mars Volta.
I went out and bought De-Loused, listened to it as much as I could in the few weeks before the show.
It didn't come across as a very accessable album. I tried to get my friends who were going to the show with me to listen, but they couldn't get into it. Honestly, I couldn't either, but I kept playing it anyway.
At the show, it felt like The Mars Volta played for over an hour, even though they only played two songs! Bits of haunting melodies drifted to me, but I only half-recognized them...it was like I had heard them in a dream. Omar & Cedric thrashed & staggered around the stage, and the lights project their 20ft shadows all around the coliseum.
Later I would grow to LOVE De-Loused in the Comatorium... though I couldn't get myself to appreciate Frances the Mute, and I didn't buy any of their other albums.

I experienced TMV as they came out immediately. Saw them multiple times from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. With each album release I followed them and was obsessed with them for their entire run.

Mars volta was one of the best bands that it's possible to be. So unapologetically themselves from day one until they "broke up". It always saddens me that some of my favorite stuff by them gets hated on by a lot of fans, like this band really was always coming out of left field with something as unpredictable and challenging as possible and I love how much their music has changed my view of music.
I was graduating high school in 2003 and I kept reading about this album on a radiohead message board. Thread after thread users were gushing about de-loused. I couldn’t get the weird name out of my head, and I went to my local department store back when they had a good cd selection and was happy when I picked up the only copy. I played it over and over and it defined my summer.

I remember hearing the first few guitar notes/chords and vocals from a track on their first album and instantly had to know who it was and where could I get some more - I think I was sitting at one of the only bars I frequented back in Edmonton . . . the next day I sought out and purchased the CD and was _not_ disappointed . . . all killer - no filler, as the saying used to go.

I remember me and this one other guy were the only ones who listened to tmv and qe ended up caching them in Irvine and then in San Diego for bedlam tour. Best shows I ever went to, this banned opened my mind and helped me find other bands / music I would of never have come across if it wasn't for them

The bedlam show was amazing I still have the CD and ticket stub from it because they played on my birthday. The opened with a improv tune and then they worked it into roulette and Cedric just dashed onto the stage it, ill never forget it.
To name a few fugazi, glassjaw/ head automatica, mastodon, fall of Troy, germs, bad brains, the album angel dust by faith no more, des roc, modest mouse, pomegranates, moving units and others
I was lucky to have seen them perform during Deloused.. absolutely incredible live. If only I could be lucky enough to afford Deloused on vinyl..

I was in high school when De-loused came out, and it was a mind opener. That album and the first Fall of Troy album that came out the same year changed the way I look at music.
Fell in love with TMV back in high school, I think it was 2003-2004...thanks completely to an old XM radio channel called XM music lab.. it was like half prog rock, half jam bands. I heard TMV, coheed and several other bands in their early years on that channel!

It's my intention to listen to them since a long time...my interest rose when Josh Homme integrated the drummer to the queens.
Oh yeah. I heard he was recommended Jon Theodore from basically all of his musician friends. Theo is a beast with Qotsa too. TMV and Qotsa are among my top 5 bands of all time i think.
I wasn't aware of Jon being also the drummer of Mini Mansions. Man I was so happy when I met him in Germany two years ago on a MM gig in a small bar in Cologne. Such a great guy. And Mikey too, of course, haha.
Bro, great video! Great band! I saw them open for System of a Down a few years back. Cedric completely upstaged Serj. SOAD looked like a bunch of old men on stage after watching TMV play and hour set. Cedric whip kicking the shit out of the microphone over and over again will be forever burnt into my memory.
That's what i hear people say haha. They just left the audience blasted like an atomic bomb test field. It's so fun when artists actually have fun and go wild on stage.
I can guarantee I had concertina on tape in 1999/2000 so 2001 can't be right.. my friend bought it after seeing them live..I would listen to it on the way to school junior year and I graduated 01'.. love the video thx!

I have a special place in my heart for not only the band but Deloused In the Comatorium in particular. I was also turned into TMV, ATDI (and Sparta) by a friend while in High School back in 2002. I don’t think Deloused had even been released at this time with The Tremulant EP being the only commercially available recording of their music at the time. I appreciated your story of being introduced to the band. The trip that you were experiencing at the time sounded profound and like an ideal backdrop while digesting the multidimensional music for the first time.
Also great highlights of certain musics parts. Omar’s guitar parts are why I picked the instrument back up circa 2012 and dove head first into effects pedals.
Also looking back now at this cover makes me think of when margaret (log lady) says "my log is turning gold" in some of her last lines from twin peaks: the return

Seen them open for Red Hot Chili Peppers. I had no idea who they were until I seen them perform, as you can imagine my mind was blown. I was mesmerized.

Wow I wish I could afford that, atm I can't get the box set, but holy shit this music defined my teen years. I still remember my pot head cousin came over for Christmas Eve and he wad showing me all sorts of heavy metal bands. At the time I was losing interest in heavy metal and was getting into stuff like mgmt, but then he pops in Frances the mute and skips to Cassandra Gemini. I was blown away, like speechless and just had the goofiest smile on my face. This was the type of music I had been looking for and learned it was called prog rock. Great video man, I love learning about this band.

@@LieLikesMusic yeah you seem to be more comfortable in presenting the videos now then when you weren't presenting with the cam on :) and it's interesting to read that you improvise more, as I thought you really grew on the structure of the videos aswell, which apperas to be well thought :)

I love de loused and frances the mute, I seen the mars volta in concert in Atlanta @ the tabernacle in 2005, and then in Asheville in 2008. I actually got a drum stick at the 2008 show. There awsome live....
When I discovered At-the Drive In around ‘02 I was obsessed. I said to my friend let’s go see them and he said they broke up, but formed a new band. I searched for this mysterious new band and it wasn’t till Deloused in the Comatorium dropped that I had heard anything. I wasn’t able to find Tremulant on vinyl but when LimeWire came around I finally was able to hear it. Dood that box set looks amazing. I’m still waiting for mine to show up.
I was in my early 20s here in west texas when de loused came out and man that album meant so much to us. it was the sound track to us smoking weed and drinking beer at the lake after work. we didn't have a lot to do other than play and listen to music. their music hits my soul in a way almost nobody else does
I feel like this new album is completely embracing their Latin roots with these songs and music videos. 🙏 can't wait for the full album

Nice video! I like your cover of Roulette Dares, interesting story about the cymbal stack. I saw them live at the end of last year and I'm excited to see them again next year! Deloused is still my favorite Volta album. I remember playing Halo 2 in my older brother's room while he would blast that album.
