Good diagnosis. My guess is that debris from the bearing failure bypassed the oil filter and contaminated the oil system. That phaser captured some debris. I would say it will be a crap shut as to whether that phaser or any other phaser becomes stuck again. I wish them luck! Time will tell.
In my opinion I would recommend the other shop replace the sticking part and let it ride. And yes it absolutely drives me insane when I have to put gas in one, but then again markup on gas and charging for pumping gas does teach lessons. It's always fun to watch the reaction when I go over an invoice with them and explain the charge at the end. Now there are instances where I know it can't be helped, but if it was drove in for a drivability concern and went by 5 gas stastions then I have no mercy. Great video as always, keep it up.
Usually the VVT actuators get clogged on Subarus.. You have to be really diligent on changing the oil in these cars. I've seen Ivan pull out the little oil controllers and clean them up and clean the screen. But it's almost always the same story on these things.
Great diagnostic and repair of a convoluted fault. If it was debris, it may return, but it should have been a very fine debris to lodge in the clearance and it may clear on its own. It's identified, let it run. If it happens again you know what the fault is.
The oil control valve is built into the bolt that holds the phaser , I had a similar problem on a merc W203 engine were the previous shop over torqued the bolt and stretched the valve , it was getting stuck only at operating engine temp
VVT phaser oil control valves can stick if the engine is overheated. Given the fact that there was previous engine failure... makes me suspect that. Or debris, like you said, also possible from engine failure. Pentastar V6 engines are bad for this. They work great and I like em... but if you want trouble, just run em hard and then immediately turn the engine off without letting the heads cool down first. Stuck VVT control valves, collapsed lifters, dropped seats, all kinds of stuff gets cranky in em when you turn em off smoking hot. Just let your motor idle and cool down for a couple minutes, geez! Not that hard to do! Sometimes the stuck valves will break free if you poke em, like you did here. Worth a shot, but I'm not sure about how long it'll stay working for. Maybe it's fine? If it was a piece of debris, it's moved on ... to somewhere else.
There is an oil screen tipe of filter somewhere on the cilinder head before the vvti actuator it is overlooked a lot during an engine repair. Debris usually clogged and never replaced 😮😮
Lots of time spent tearing the engine down and diaging when those phasers should have been replaced after a bottom end failure. Nice quick diagnosis 👍👍
Where does one find the info on how parts move and work like you explained. That insight and your spring test led to a diag here which is awesome. I have Alldata but I’m not sure it goes into that detail or not. Thanks for the great vid btw
Thank you for the update I missed those videos cuz as you know I have been learning through you all UA-cam videos. Keep a great job with it Mr Jake I appreciate what you do for us the ones that are willing to learn. I can’t wait until you post a new one.
You have to be careful to not let the phaser slip off the cam but still if the OCV has debris in it from the bad engine the next place it has to go is the phaser.
you know what drives me nuts about those tablets. they clear your settings when you go back a screen from the data read 🤪🤪🤪 how funny last week had a car with vvt issue . diagnosed it well they would not let me tear it apart back to supplier but i think the reluctor had come loose or slipped on the phaser . personally your case i think i would let that ride see if the phaser stays loose could have been a bit of something in there that wedged itself . bit hit and miss but you may have possibly moved it and its cycled back through the oil system never to be seen again 🤞
There's a video "Subaru VVT Learned Values Reset With Launch Torque Link | ECM Saved" here on UA-cam. I've run into before after an engine is driven long enough for faulty logic to be developed and as the TSB says replacing the ECM was the fix. Never tried it the way the video describes but might be worth a try. @@autodiagyt
@@greggc8088 I was talking to others about that it it seems like since this vehicle is a crossover to Toyota as well, it doesn’t have the learned angles that other Subarus have and the ecu reset doesn’t do anything on this vehicle, I tried and nothing seemed to reset the learned value of the solenoid duty cycle.
ok short block and vvt problems hmmmm............ all it takes is a minute speck to mess hydraulics up. old style egr system was way better, much simpler. its a 60/40 as to whether it will last kinda like a duty cycle thing lol. if that spec is small enough to pass (like a kidney stone) you got it if not its gunna be an immeasurable pain until you open it up.
Its something about these japanies cars. Their self diagnostic sucks. Had little while a go Nissan murano. Turbo actuator was stuck. No codes and car was trying all the time use that but ut didnt move. That part allso had angle sensor but still no code regards that wasnt moving where car wanted it
I’m about 9:00 minutes in the video and you you show bank one as the passenger side and then you talk about bank two problem, but you pointing at the passenger side again. 🤔
PJ and Chad are solid guys. Always willing to help out. Really love the diagnostic network that we all are part of. Thanks for the video Jake
No it won't stay repaired. Your correct in thinking that there is debris in the VVT
Probably sealer debris that fell into the timing cover while cleaning. Those engines are held together with what seems like eight gallons of sealer.

Ivan would be proud! NPR!
At least until the phasers are replaced as a precaution...

I also got the p000B code after Subaru replaced my short block

I had same problem with nissan pathfinder v6 after a cylinder head job, had some junk stuck in vvt solenoid
Gracias por tu video me han ayudado muc
They should perform an engine oil cleaning service. I've had good luck using BG products
Very interesting case, same solenoid or similar use in Volkswagen engines.
Alot of OEs are using this style setup. Chrysler pentastar 3.6, GM LS 5.3, the Dodge Hemi, MB uses it.
@@autodiagyt you are right,have a great day.

Yes it was actually pulled back apart and those filters checked. This motor was taken apart 3 times before I got it.
Bonito comentario Luis .

cool diag Jake , yeah you got the magic touch Jake, it be fine , maybe worth changing oil and filter
What great diag. Thanks

Operation and Description, alldata has it but it depends on the oe service information as to how much detail you get.
Great video Mr Jake .
I used to fallows voltage drop diag but unfortunately he is not longer posting videos .
Yeah I been trying to get him and Cody to do videos but they don’t do much diag anymore just programming

I’d say you could put diag Cody Jake. You know your stuff my guy
Isn’t the oil control valve part of the bolt that holds the phaser? If so the valve can be replaced without removing the cover.

That's a good one. Never worked on a Subaru so I haven't seen that.
Did the problem come back later on?
Still hasn’t
I think it will last.. do u think that could happen from different drivers and how ppl drive?
I think it was trash that go in it from the engine failure.
That will stick again... usually when is most necessarily.
Thanks for the videos 📷😊
Lucas for VVT ?
That coolant overflow lid not secured is triggering me, lol.
Lol I don't remember it I noticed that or not.
❤❤❤❤❤
I think you should change it. You never know if it might reoccur.
Only time will tell 🙃
