AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on UA-cam are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

Never thought an oil change video could be so entertaining! Fun video! After TWO “professional” oil change places neglected to snug up our drain plug (it was leaking) I considered just doing it myself going forward. This video makes me also question if it’s worth it…

  • @gregmather7169

    Entertaining video.
    1. Torque wrench is used only for installing threaded nuts/bolts. Do not use to remove threaded nuts/bolts.
    2. Cardboard under the vehicle reduces the mess.
    3. Use a punch to poke a hole in the bottome of your oil filters and it will cause less of a mess.
    4. A lot of new oil containers are now 5 quarts. Check before you purchase.
    5. Being 96 degrees outside, I'd skip running the engine to make the oil hotter. It will flow just fine.
If you are still looking for a new tow vehicle that will save you a lot of aggrivation and will pull your Airstream easily. Get a Ford F-250/350 with the 7.3 litre gas engine. A lot less cost on routine maintenance than a diesel. Easy oil change at 8 quarts and you have enough room under the 4wd truck to do an oil change without ramps.
Thanks for the entertainment. It was awesome!

You might regret later on tightening those filters down with that tool. I have always only tightened oil filters "hand tight". When you use a tool they tend to get stuck on the mounts and if you're lucky and with some great effort they will turn off. I have helped friends in the past that have tightened the filter on with a wrench and have had to chisel the old filter off the engine, not fun at all.... All in all another great video and I am glad that those ramps didn't collapse while Seemore was sitting on them.

...and that was the first time I've seen somebody use vaseline to rub across the rubber gasket. Nothing wrong with that, because vaseline is petroleum jelly. You can also just dip your finger in the regular oil and spread it around the gasket.

    • @paulmarentette5346
      @paulmarentette5346 Місяць тому +3

@@gj4578 yes, in general vaseline should not be used as it can swell and or deteriorate gaskets and o-rings. Those big filters are mounted facing up so fill 'em while out, finishing with a swipe of the finger over the gasket with the same oil. No big air traps and oil on startup.

Frequent Oil change DIY tip: When putting new filters on, only use hands to tighten. Using the wrench to tighten sometimes leads to over-tightening (aka SUPER-hard to remove next time). Luckily, next time will be outsourced, eh? If you must use a tool, don’t exceed 3/4-1 rotation after gasket contacts surface.

Good job. My only recommendation would be to replace the oil drain plug with a fumoto valve. Also on my 7.3 f250 a 5 gallon bucket fits under the oil pan. No need for ramps. 6.0 may or may not have the same clearance. If it does, no need for the $50 drain pan or the ramps.

Here is a hint and helpful tip for changing the oil in any vehicle but especially your 6.0 L Ford. Buy a pair of long sleeve rubber gloves. When putting the gloves on, fold a 1" cuff on the gloves, and in this way when the oil runs down your arm the cuff with catch it so it doesn't run further down arm.

Sean, if you want to feel a little better about that $50 oil drain pan I've got 2 of them. I was in Florida and couldn't find an oil change place that could fit my 11 ft. tall rig in their shop. I already had one $50 or there about oil drain pan at home but I had to buy another one when I was in Florida and had to change my oil myself. Now for the drain plug gaskets, if they are sold copper you can heat them on your propane stove in your rig until they are red hot. Then let them air cool (do not quench) and they will be soft and will work again. I have reused the head gasket on an old Triumph motorcycle many times by doing this. Keep the good stuff coming.

Please, please get good steel ramps for next time!!! Also, to make the next oil change easier, only hand-tighten the filters. Another trick to get the filters to seal well, you dip your finger into the new oil and use that for lube. And the drain plug should be tight but you don't need to kill it. Otherwise, you could strip the plug and/or the oil pan by over-tightening. All these tricks I use and seem to work.
Please keep up the great work!

I have a 2012 with the 6.7 - still 13 qts of dirty oil. It costs about $100 for just the parts so no way I'm taking it to an oil change place for someone barely qualified to change oil. to make it easier - punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and be patient - let the oil drain out and it won't spill around the edges so much. Also - don't use Vaseline on rubber - it degrades it. Just put your finger in the new oil and spread on the rubber seal - that's all you need. Also, you don't need to torque the filter down - that's why its so hard to get off. I've been changing my own oil since I began driving in the mid 1970s. Why pay someone else to do something you can do - in the time it would take to drive to the easy lube and back? Thanks for the video

    Coupla' things...
    1. Check the oil dipstick when level before starting as you'll want to compare volume of old oil out to new oil in.
    2. The front of those ramps collapsed only because you drove over them. Have a spotter or hold up a bit before you hit the front edge.
    3. An elegant oil changer will have all tools and parts needed laid out on a large fresh sheet of cardboard that will also collect any splashes or spills and he/she will wear the same pair of nitrile gloves from start to finish.
    4. After pulling the magnetic oil drain plug, inspect and wipe it!
    5. If you released the pressure in the oil system by loosening the filler cap and pulling dipstick out a bit, I missed it.
    6. The new jugs you emptied out are the perfect vessel to dump old oil back into. This way you can also compare from step 1.
    7. An extra quarter turn by hand is all the filter needs after mating tight.
    8. While the oil is draining, this is YOUR opportunity to inspect for any road damage, brake condition and other things while you're under there. Use a pinpoint flashlight and follow every path as far as you can see. Many times this discovery will be the most valuable reason for doing it yourself. Being personally familiar with condition or issues provides confidence no simple oil change tech can deliver.
    9. After emptying out your drain pan take that flashlight and look for any shiny specs that might indicate excessive wear.
    10. Finally, having saved yourself at least $150 in unnecessary charges, you KNOW it was done right and as such, also saved yourself a couple of hours and potentially much much more, so enjoy the beer and a break.

Good ramps are made by Rhino Ramps. I have them...holds my Suburban no problem and they are 30 years old.
Oil filter wrenches are to be used to remove filters. Not used to put them on. Hand tighten those oil filters...spin on until they meet the surface snug and then about 1/2 turn by hand. Using the wrench will make them very hard to take off next time. If you can't get in there to hand tighten them, use the wrench but go easy.
Stock up on the correct drain plug washer/gasket once you find the correct one...keep them with the spare oil filters and oil at home. Eliminates problems later. Buy oil/filters when on sale.
Next time...try using a 1 gallon freezer zip lock bag once you get the oil filter loose but before it begins to drip, slide the bag over the filter then spin it off. That helps will the spills and mess.
Drain plugs do not need to be sinched down like a nut and bolt. Get it tight but just enough to compress the copper, just snug enough so it won't work loose.
Also, it's recommended NOT to use those oil change joints as they usually have fresh to the industry oil changers on staff who are not experienced enough to know the full process. They proved that to you by not replacing the oil filler cap...not impossible to do but for a place that does that all day long, a big mistake. Also, they are a risk vs your local mechanic.
A few tips to make your next oil change more pleasant.

I have the same upgrade on the same exact truck. For the main oil filter, you can take off that rock shield to get a normal strap wrench in there. And to prevent oil from running down your hand, puncture the end of the filter with a screw driver and drain the oil still in the filter and lines leading to it. Add a Fumoto value under the oil pan for tool less draining.

Thanks I will check it out! I have four or five oil drain pans here in the house. The one I used in the video is good because it is deep and the oil is less prone to splash out. Our other vehicles, of course, contain much less oil so splashing is less of a problem

    • @johnhwang339
      @johnhwang339 Місяць тому

@@LongLongHoneymoon The tub doesn't allow you to pour the oil into a bottle easily. There's no spout, but it is large. You can slide it under the oil filters to catch the overflow when unscrewing the filters.
I am thinking putting the tub into a large trash bag. The bag acts like a liner to the tub. You scoop out the oil using a disposable cup or something. Then you turn the bag inside out and capture the oil inside the bag that you can drain into another container. This will leave the tub clean.

I used to do my own oil changes years ago...then I "wised up" and started paying other people to do them...then I "wised up" recently and started doing them myself again. Aside from knowing it was done correctly, as you do them you get faster and more efficient. The first time is always the hardest and longest but once you get a few under your belt it's second nature. And as long as you're putting miles on the truck you'll be doing them with some frequency. The problem is doing them on a vehicle that doesn't get much use. You forget how to do oil changes because you're hardly doing any at all.

After seeing the 90 mile fully loaded towing range there is no way I’m dropping that kind of money on that truck. Musk originally promised over 500 miles (I figured 250 towing) of range for the Tri-motor which is what I originally reserved. Keep in mind that my wife drives a model Y which is amazing and we use it for long trips utilizing the supercharger network. When Tesla builds a tow vehicle capable of 250 miles fully loaded I’ll buy it. Save your pennys.

I was curious what was different about you're Ford as to the eluding to a complicated engine oil change and indeed that setup would confuse shops that are not familiar with aftermarket oddities like this. There is one thing that I have to wonder how many people neglect or don't think about when going through the motions of changing their own engine oil and that is greasing the vehicle, be it ujoints if any are greaseable as well as all greaseable suspension parts. With more and more vehicles claiming they can have long drain intervals which is a whole other topic, the suspension is not getting greased as often as it should be even if a proper shop is doing the work.
