    AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on UA-cam are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

    Picture your current cargo load for a national park trip, including everything in Seemore's bed and the "rooftop" box. Consider your preference for spontaneously traveling long distances. Does short range and extended recharge time at carefully planned stops fit the LoLoHo model? Does giving up bed space for the extra batteries make any sense for you? (I'm thinking no.) I'm picturing how ubiquitous Diesel is on the highway, and yet you've nearly run dry before.

    We own EV's so I'm sold on them as general transportation and have no anti-EV bias but IMO they aren't practical yet for long distance towing which is why I still own a diesel PU. Something to consider: Let's assume you spring for the $16K range extender battery and don't mind that you're losing 1/3 of your cargo space. Although you may start out the day with a potential 235 miles, when you stop on the way you will likely want to charge to only 80% since it takes a long time to get that last 20%. Also, unless you're much more of a risk taker than I am, you're not going to take the chance on running your battery down to 0 and getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. Figure that at least a 10% reserve is probably prudent. Do the math and you're now looking at a best case range of around 165 miles before you have to charge again. If that works for you, then great. It wouldn't work for me. Good luck with your decision.

    Excellent review, Sean. You clearly articulated all the thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head. I am also concerned about backing using those tiny mirrors and the cameras and am awaiting some first-hand reports on that. For the moment the two main obstacles for me are the lack of towing range as we often do 500 mile days and the lack of pull-through charge spots. Until those get addressed we are going to stick with our diesel.

    • @Johnnymailman
      @Johnnymailman 7 місяців тому

      I agree excellent review. Those two main obstacles are what will hold back (for now) most RV owners. Or it's going to be the case of that video of a truck parked on the side of a gravel road, with a portable gas generator plugged in "slowly!) charging the Lightning truck. Like anything brand new, it's growing pains.

    • @LongLongHoneymoon
      @LongLongHoneymoon  7 місяців тому +1

      I haven’t noticed the RV parks prohibiting EV charging, but we tend to stay in state parks. (I believe you… but it’s just something that I have not personally noticed in our travels.) I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if RV campgrounds start charging extra for EV charging. One way or another, the cost of electricity must be priced into the equation.

      @virtual-viking 7 місяців тому +3

      Tesla started rolling out trailer friendly SuperCharger spots months ago, long before launching the CyberTruck. And even where they haven't, there's usually some spots where you can charge without unhitching by blocking an additional charger. While that's not OK on the busy chargers, that's not the ones you're likely visit on a camping trip.
      You either want to go electric, or you don't want to. If you do, it's totally possible. If you don't, it's totally possible to find an excuse not to.

      If I got one, I would honestly see how big of a generator I need to keep moving down the road. I have an oversized fuel tank so I can drive 1000 miles a day and don't want to stop in any cities or towns to refuel. I always find a place in the woods to sleep when I do stop, and dont want to start having to go into populated areas just to charge my truck.
      Need a rv loaded with extra battery capacity, solar awning, and a big generator to keep going.

    We made a reservation for the Cybertruck about a month before deliverys started. Almost two years ago we reserved a Silverado EV. Our plans were to tow a 7500 lb GD Imagin. Looked at Ford and Rivian and decided too little range. Now Rivian has the max battery for additional $16K. Nearly the same ranage and price as the Cybertruck with the extender. I believe Tesla has the most advanced truck. The Silverado WT 3 is probably the most cost effective to exceed 400 miles of range. Just bought a 2023 Silverado 3.0L diesel for $60K. We couldn't wait any longer.

    We have friends in Winnipeg that own a large trucking company. They bought an F150 Lighting and went on vacation to Chicago. Their first charge station was in Minnesota. When they got there, it was out of order. At the next closest charger, they had 40 kms of range left. The plug did not fit the charger. They ended up renting an ICE SUV and carried on. Good luck towing and camping in the Northern USA or Canada with that rig. There are 3 hour waits at stations along the Trans Canada in the summer.

    Nice summary for using on towing. I also have a camping trailer and travel extensively throughout the Rocky Mountain region. The interstates all have Tesla Super chargers, it’s the outback you have to worry about particularly if you dont like staying at hotels or RV parks. You did mention that you have a generator on your camp trailer as a backup. You could easily charge the truck with a few gallons of gas in a few hours or overnight.

    Amazing video and a great review of this new truck. I think you are correct to assume that towing range would be about half of trucks estimate range. However, that range is from 100 percent charge to 0. Most of the time you will operate in the 80 to 10 precent range of the battery. So take that into account when towing. You might start your day with 100 percent charge, but you will typically only recharge the battery to about 80% while long distance driving to minimize charging time. The 80 to 100% charging can be very slow and time consuming.

  • @willgaines6157

    Great review. I always like your interesting and careful analysis. Keeping your current truck and trying a Cybertruck would fit your channel. We towed an Airstream the size of yours for 6-8 years with a 6 cyl Chevy ASTRO van. It handled our Eastern USA travels and one trip from Eastern NC through the tip of Michigan to Toronto. The majority of our jaunts were weekend trips to state parks or college football games, less than 200 miles. I'd like to see a Cybertruck work on such short trips. At this point, it does not seem practical for long hauls. We did the dual vehicle bit for 4-5 years, going solo in a Class C van and leaving the Airstream parked at retreats from time to time for extended periods. You will entertain us well if you go the two truck model for a while. Thanks again. All the best.

    Sean, although there are some neat new features, but the batteries really have not changed and is still the limiting factor , especially when towing. Two thing about that, first when DC fast charging its recommend to charge to no more that 80%, which lowers the towing range from 170 to 136 and 235 to 188 respectively. If you do charge to 100% it takes a lot longer to charge especially with the size of the batteries in the Cyber Truck. It could be done in al lot of places, but I don't think it would fit your style of travel getting off the beaten path and being adventurous.

That way when you park for the night, you can get a full charge on both of those batteries, at the lower current, and not be limited to 80%.

    Great vid! I don't think electric adventure traveling will be a thing for the masses for quite a while. Doing it effectively even in the near future will be incredibly expensive. Case in point, a company called lightship RVs is creating an RV with motors and a battery to extend the range of vehicles while towing while also retracting it's top half and dropping into the lower half during travel to make it more aerodynamic. Although a great potential innovation, it will probably cost as much as a dual motor CT by itself. lol

    The best current option for the Cybertruck is as a self-contained RV. I use our model Y this way and it is great option. In coming years, good distance towing depends on pull through Superchargers (maybe coming to Pilots and BP) and further locations in states like Wyoming and national parks.
    Future electric RV towing needs the trailer to be reinvented to extend range by optimal aero and self-propelled capable.

      How long does it take to charge it to say 80%? I can't imagine waiting at least twice a day for it to charge. When we're on long road trips from say Oregon to Arizona we need to cover a lot of ground each day. I think it might add another half day total over the 3 day drive or mean we check in after our usual dinner time each day. But that's just us. We didn't have pets that need potty breaks and we don't like driving after dark so we hurry at the gas stations. Also what if all the chargers are in use? How long do you need to wait to charge and can you reserve a charger or get on a list? In an emergency evacuation this could be mayhem. I'm waiting for a hybrid truck. One that charges will you drive. Thanks for the in depth video.

This is almost flat drive, with no mountains roads at all. There are also youtube videos covering just scratching the battery cover required the battery to be replaced to insure the batteries weren't damaged and might start on fire. I sure would not drive the truck through a stream as shown in ad. I wouldn't even think about replacing my 2000 F350 dually that only job is to pull our RVs.

    I have talked to a local guy in the Sam's club parking lot who has a Rivian electric truck. As a light duty truck, it works well. As soon as you drop a trailer on the ball, you are cutting your range significantly. He towed a u-haul trailer 30 miles to pickup an antique desk. It took half the battery for a 60 mile round trip towing that trailer.

    We just bought a Model Y and a Model 3. For towing an RV I think it depends on the RV, maybe not 5th wheels but that airstream, it will probably work well with the extended battery. EV-suitable RVs are probably a better answer, ones with batteries and motors of their own to assist their tow vehicle and recapture energy via regenerative braking. I would say wait until 2025 when the early adopter premium (price) drops and the bugs are worked out of the production line, that's when I hope to get mine.

    You said it best, trucks are tools. Tools come in a plethora of shapes and sizes designed to perform specific functions. IMO, as a tool, electric vehicles really shine in normal day-to-day driving. Short commute to work, running errands and the like. About 100 miles or so daily and to be slow charged overnight at home. For the purposes of RVers, we usually look for a tool that has the best balance between towing and range. Last week, my wife and I returned from our trip to Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World Orlando Florida. Storms in the Florida pan handle had us stay near Gainesville for 2 extra days before resuming our journey home. We made the long trip home (780miles) in one day to be back for work. Quick stops to refuel made this possible. E-trucks will need to come a long way before they will truly be a stand in for our current offerings of trucks that tow.

It’s time for it but you cannot rest all these they will charge you $50,000 fine for it and if you sell it for more than 50,000 you still have to pay the difference. They will sue you.

    I've had a Y over a year now and have had the CT dual motor on order for a long time. It's a beast and I'm excited for it. It'll be a great truck and good for towing the boat short distances. It won't be a good long distance hauler currently though, due to the charging network requiring you to back in as you mentioned. I took the Y on a 1,000 mile trip when we bought it. It took 25% longer; however, I was more rested when we got there due to the autopilot and mandatory rest breaks.

    Good video! You hit a lot of key points. As a two time EV owner, my opinion is the EV is all about the charging experience. Otherwise, its just a vehicle. Today, a Tesla is the benchmark for charging experience. I wouldn't have another EV without Tesla's supercharging network.
    A range extender is probably a requirement for EV towing. Remember, you don't charge to 100% and you don't drain to 0. Anything outside a 20-80% charge window is going to take more than an hour to recharge. Now your range extended 235 mile towing range is hovering around 140 miles with a 45 minute charge. Sure, you can plan for 60-70 minutes to get the last 20% into the CT from maybe a bottom of 12%. At this point, I don't think we even know how the range extender battery will charge, and at what charging rate. In the end, you will get around 200-210 miles of range for a 70 minute charge stop. At 65 miles per hour, you will be doing that every 3 hours.
    The range assisting travel trailer might sound good. Remember, while you are charging the truck, you will also need to be charging the trailer. How is that going to work? I mean, will it even work? Probably not with todays super chargers. I haven't heard of a range extending Airstream yet, have you?
    Remember, you wont be stuck with the CT either. If you make a case to Tesla, they will buy it back before the year is up, or they will give you permission to sell it. They will probably try to low ball you on the price. I would think you would be able to negotiate that value with them in exchange for not publicly humiliating the CT on UA-cam.
    In the end, you might need to think of upgrading Seemore before your CT reservation comes due. You may be waiting as long as 3 Years for your CT. Will Seemore make it?

    Sean, very fair and balanced review. I'm glad that you haven't cancelled - yet. You might want to consider contacting the Tesla CEO and explain the misgivings for RV owners. Your channel alone has 254,000 viewers, with xx percentage being RV owners, enthusiasts. That's one heck of a marketing audience. The charging issue with access/space around the recharging station is by far the biggest block. Even with a Tesla extension cord, a normal charging "corral" will not handle a hitched RV. If you back in or nose in, the rest of the rig will protrude across the aisle and block traffic. Likewise, if you drive in sideways, you block 5 other charging stations. Also, how soon do you think enough drive through chargers would be available to support cross country travel. Another serious drawback is that, as far as I know, you can't simply call Triple A (AAA) and get a jump if your battery runs out. The rig has to be towed to a charger. I think that they have a ways to go before the CyberTruck/RV become charger friendly, but if you partner with Tesla, all these things are ultimately solveable and, in the meantime, they will likely have all sorts of Beta testing you can do.

Who cares about the ruggedness of the superficial skin when the chassis is, a cast aluminum unibody, less rugged than a forged steel frame. All electric trucks have low operating costs, and the competition is cheaper. Tesla just had a massive recall on their self driving tech. I wouldn't list that as an advantage. Adjustable suspensions are available on many pickups. The truck, judging from the few clips offroad we have seen, does not have great articulation. @@davidwheeler7503 You sound like the guys who used to say... Nobody is going to want a horseless carriages, they smell, they are noisy and are just not a sustainable form of transportation.

      @TwilightKid the horseless carriages were much more superior to the horse and buggy than EV's are to the horseless carriages. and everyone wasn't forced into a horseless carriage like we are into these less inferior, more costly EV product. But hey, if you're young enough, you will eventually see the big picture of what's driving the EV product, which it's definitely not the market, and you're not going to like the big picture. Unfortunately, the old adage, some people just have to touch the flame to find out it burns, is real.

    • @TwilightKid
      @TwilightKid 7 місяців тому

      @@davidwheeler7503 I agree that the horseless carriage was more superior to the horse and buggy buggy, just like Tesla EV's are far superior to ICE engines that haven't changed in 100 years and in case you hadn't noticed EV's are on par with prices of ICE vehicles. Model 3 sells for $30k and there are others that sell for $10k to $15k But I digress, more importantantly as Sony found out with the Betamax money will usually be the defining issue and when you add up all the costs associated eith keeping ICE cars on the road and the life expectancy ICE over EV's it's a no brainer. EV's last on average 3 times longer or more. Most people will tell you it's an amazing feet if an ICE car last 200k miles where EV's will run for millions of miles with way few parts to break and no maintenance only a fool would pick ICE over EV.

    There are a few thoughts that popped up, while watching the video Sean, as you didn't mention much on the frame of the Cyber-truck, as to installing a heavy duty rear hitch. Also, with the shape of the truck, 5th wheel trailers, as they exist now wouldn't attach well at all, as turning seems virtually impossible. For distance travelling, my wife & I tend to always have a location in mind, and travel rather quickly to get there, as in a comfortable seat (as in our Diesel pusher) I can drive easily 12 hours comfortably, as I did go 14 hours once, but that was from dark in the morning, to dark at night, and I was getting sleepy by the end of it, so our 'travel' is different than yours. Obviously too, the 'charge time' wouldn't work for us, as we try and put as many miles as possible on, per day. Not all the time, in that we do sometimes travel with friends, and in doing so, go short day trips and stop early on such occasions! Thus to me, the Cybertruck would need to triple it's travel distance, have the ability to pull a fifth wheel, and importantly, have seating that is plush for long term driving of comfort. With some of the hills in the west especially, it would make me wonder just how well the Cyber-truck would do, as 'torque' isn't really a value in electric motors, so how well would the electric motors stand up to long term hill climbs. We have one where it's 45 minutes of constant moving upwards, and even our DP gets pretty warm climbing...alternatively, the truck/trailer setup wouldn't weight what our DP does. Does the Cyber-truck have autonomous ability? Perhaps an afternoon snooze, while on the road may be a possibility Sean!! Look forward to more on this choice, although for us, I can't see it happening for a decade or two, and by then at my current age, it will be time to start thinking of a Cruise, more than RV.

    I consider the *"Cybertruck"* a joke. I should probably drive it myself before I make such scathing remarks, but I've always been skeptical to say the least of totally EV vehicles.

    NOOOOOoooo! Then again, if you do go for it, it will be a benefit to all your subscribers because they can learn the hard lesson the easy way. Those trucks can not haul a load. I will finish watching the video but I had to stop and say that.
    Flipping the truck to turn a quick profit? As with the purchase of any new vehicle, it depreciates vastly when you drive it off the lot. And with all the new systems it has, a myriad of things can and will likely go wrong. You might have to sell it for 2/3 of what you paid.
    I hope you don't do this. It sounds like you're going to, though. God help you whatever you decide but I hope you don't. Please don't. (They explode, too.)

    I've already put down the nonrefundable deposit on a Foundation CT since I don't tow enough for it to be that much of an issue. I do haul all sorts of stuff all of the time, so my truck will get the same use as the Ford without the rust, scratches, dings and dents.. The more cancelations the sooner the rest of us will gut our trucks.
