AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on UA-cam are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

We sure like our Trailer Aid too. It is a life saver for changing tires. We had a slow leak on I-10, coming home from Disney World, and we had the tire changed in 15 minutes. Well with the money.

We replaced our tires at a discount tire. I had just seen a UA-cam video on jacking a travel trailer. I taught the tire techs where to lift mine, and made them use blocks at the proper places. It was worth the effort. It helped that I used to own a tire shop and tipped the techs for their efforts.

Even when a shop has a sign saying no one allowed in work area I still go and watch the mechanic. After restoring cars, driving truck, heavy equipment, eventually a number of patrol cars over the past 56 years I know good basic repair practices. I'm not afraid to speak up or ask a mechanic why they're doing what they're doing. Plus I have the "gift of gab" which makes a good working relationship with the mechanic.

I had new Michelin tires mounted on our F-350 last fall by Discount Tire. During the first 5K mile rotation, the store manager noticed that three of the four tires were slightly different - I believe with respect to the weight rating. Something I likely never would've noticed, and probably something that wouldn't make a difference in our application. I was very impressed with the honesty and, as a result, will be a lifelong customer. This was a great reminder to be vigilant about monitoring tire conditions. And... Trailer-Aid ordered. Thank you!

Thank you for this affirmation. We just replaced 4-year-old tires on our Airstream that still looked new. A friend said we were crazy and took the old ones off our hands. I didn’t trust our local America’s Tire at all and took the wheels to them two at a time. I’m now feeling much better about the investment in money and time! Thank you LoLoHo!

My tire guys just called me and said my camper is ready. Just put 4 new tires on it. The tires that were on it lasted 7 years. This camper only gets moved twice a year. To our mountain lot in the spring and back home in the late fall. The tread looked great but between the tread it had a lot of cracks. They might have been ok to ride for an hour but 400 dollars is cheat insurance on a camper when tire blowout damage can cost a lot more and cost time. Great show Sean and Christy. Hope y'all have a good weekend.

We had a truck tire blowout on new Toyo tires. Our TST monitor told us about it at the exact same time the tire blew. So, just because one has new tires, there is no guarantee you won't get a blowout. In fact, it made me madder as the tires were new.
and it will take about a year for Toyo to determine if we get our money back. I find if I put things off, it usually bites me in the rear!

I empathize with big ticket repairs causing deferring maintenance expenses. Last summer we were towing into Las Vegas with 110+ degrees and the truck A/C went out. That cost $1400 to repair. During the next few days our camper A/C was having trouble keeping the camper cool in the high temperatures. I thought, It's good enough to get us home." It wasn't. In that same area on I-10 at the California Arizona border at 112 degrees the camper A/C quit. At 4:30 PM on a Saturday night we were looking at going to a hotel. But we made multiple calls and found an RV mobile tech 20 miles East of Quartzsite that said he could come to us tomorrow or if we got to his shop an hour before sunset he would fix us today. Pack up and go! He replaced our A/C in under an hour for $2300.

On my last trip, it was replace the truck tires or the trailer tires. The truck tires were worn slap out, so the got done. As y’all, as soon as we got back, I would do the trailer. The tires were only 3 years old but were normal dummy tires. First blowout, I could only find a place with 2 of the desired 5. So I looked ahead and found 3 more 100 miles down the road. The other axle had a blowout on part of the interstate with just enough shoulder to git r dun! Rode the rest of the 60 miles left with Jesus at the wheel. Got there and shoed the rest. I will buy one of the ramps, always meant to but you know how that goes. Love your channel, long time subscriber even before I owned my first RV!! Loloho!!!

I had e new tires installed on our 2014 Airstream FC at America’s Tire. The first thing the tech did was to put the jack u Dee the axle. I was standing there watching. I quickly told him to stop and showed him where he should jack. He tried to argue with me, but I stood my ground and he relented. No damage.

Just spent over $2K to replace tires on a Dodge 3500 Mega Cab and 29' Forest River TT w/3 slide-outs.
Got Tires at Sam's. They Sell TT Tires but do not install them because that has to be done outside their work bays and the AC paving might get damaged!.
Adjacent to Sam's is a Goodyear Tire Store. Made arrangements to get tires and installation there. They had a AC driveway but next to their building past the work bays was a concrete slab area about 70' long that they used for truck and trailer tire change outs.
When they were done the store manager took me over the the tires and pointed out the 4 Jacking points for tire work and said to be very careful that only those locations were used !
Very sorry to read about your recent problems, I have followed your website for many years.

Sorry to hear about your Tire Woes. I have has Michelin LT tires on a truck and they have delamanated after a few years and were cracked as well. Airstreams are heavy trailers so you are probably better off with the LT tires but I would not buy Michelins. . I was told that while ST tires may not have the weight rating that LT tires have they do have much better UV protection. I have a friend that tows an 24 foot Amerilite that has twenty plus year old ST tires in it that have good thread and are not cracked, and I cringe when he pulls into the Park where I camp. That's a terrible risk for everyone on the road if they were to fly apart. Most I will go on ST Tires is ten years but I only go fifty miles one way and I have an ultralight trailer. Every trip I check them with a fine tooth comb. Sorry about your water system. Thank god you took pictures after the tire flew apart.

I had a trailer tire blow out that didn’t damage the trailer 6 years ago, replaced all four at the time, and just last month replaced those tires in preparation for a trip. From experience, the trailer ramp/ Jiffy Jacks work great on torsion axles but may not work at all on spring axles (the equalizer does it's thing and keeps the axle on the ground) or air ride axles.
By all means try it with your trailer before you have a problem and go to depend on it.

    • @Scubaken2022
      @Scubaken2022 6 місяців тому +3

Absolutely correct on this, wide stance leaf springs will not work with the trailer ramp. I have experience with this, in fact when I had my blow out I couldn’t even get my jack on the spring shackles to lift it. But I did use the ramp on the flat side to get the flat tire high enough to place the jack to remove the tire.

First trip out on a sailboat I'd bought I noticed a single broken wire on side stay (what holds up the mast), My local rigger told me it would be at least a week to get the cable and install it.
Just one wire, how much damage can that do ?
The whole cable snapped, mast came across the deck.
Now I have a fishing boat.
Reason for posting this example, is if you see, or smell something wrong, stop, figure it out !
I've seen motorhomes pull into a campground and bursting into flames saying I smelled fuel before I got here.

My certified mechanic daughter worked in a tire shop and now manages an oil change shop (both are national franchises). After listening to her vent about how clueless the new hires are about anything mechanical (especially under age 30), I think we should all just assume they don't know and try to diplomatically clue them in on these things....or be that PITA customer, if necessary, to make them listen just to protect our property. LOL

Hi guys! We did just that! Changed all tires, after only 10000 miles of difficult Alaska roads in order to come back east safe and sound! Expensive, maybe, but so much less that the hassle of having to change a tire on the side of the road! So many RV owners will run « their luck » thinking that it only happens to others….. as my accountant partner said: if we can’t be safe with tires expenses…well we shouldn’t be going that far anyway! Great reminder!

Wow what a bummer. On the up side you did dodge a very big bullet when that tire didn't take out the sidewall of your airstream or fender liner, etc, etc. We have a Newmar 2003 Dutch Star class A that has Michelin 275 70R 22.5" tires. During covid we were getting nervous about our tires as they were 4 months away from being 10 yrs old. And during COVID Michelin pretty much shut down production for quite a while. They told me we should be good for 10 years and they had very minimal cracking on the sidewalls, but we should get them looked at by a dealer. We were able to locate 2 tires so we had those installed on the front steers. Felt better. It took another month to find the remaining 4 for the rear axle. Around $ 4k for all 6 tires. We don't travel anything like as much as y'all do but whenever we travel we put tire covers on at the campground if we are staying for more than a day or two. We always try and stay 7-8 days. Whenever we are home the RV is in an enclosed garage. Our RV weighs around 30k lbs but these are the same tires they put on semi car haulers. Load range J. Safe travels!

I downsized from a 25' trailer to a new single axle 16' trailer in spring 2020 before prices went crazy due to you know what. In 2022 I was headed to South Dakota and near the NE SD line I felt what i thought was a gust blowing on the camper. I could tell something was off and sure enough a tire was wiped out. Another gentleman stopped and helped me get it swapped out quickly. The next town big enough for a tire shop had the right size tires albeit pricey. He also was able to hammer out the small dent in the rim. I said lets replace both but leave one of the new ones on my spare carrier. Less than 200 miles and three camp spots later that spare I was running that had less than a 1000 miles on it blew out just like your tire. The little town of Midland SD had a tire shop but it was Saturday. The door was unlocked but a really big mean dog was inside. I call the number. She will be there in a couple minutes as her husband is out working in the fields. She put a new tire on and had me on my way. 11 days into that trip and gas prices approaching $5, a reefer that eventually need a new board....I headed home early.

I would have done the same thing and waited on changing the tires, probably closer to 10 years if they still looked good. The blowout was likely from low air pressure due to a flat. That can happen with new tires. The tire pressure monitoring system probably would have saved you if it were working. Not throwing any stones here, I don't use one. I don't like aftermarket electronics. Way to high maintenance for me. Sorry to hear all the trouble you guys went through. Love your channel!

ST are speed rated, and illegal to use on any vehicle carrying passengers.

Thanks for this video, for multiple reasons. My Airstream (and its tires) are 5 years old this coming October and I’m very aware that new tires are not far off. I didn’t replace them this year because of budgeting. And I’ve been so stressed about taking them to the tire shop because I don’t want to have to nag the heck out of them about the jack points. So this video hit all the relevant topics for me. Clearly it’s a message to stand outside and supervise/take my tire ramp. I’m sorry your tire issue killed your trip. As usual, your experience and willingness to share the ups and downs of RV travel are valuable to all of us who watch.

    • @LongLongHoneymoon
      @LongLongHoneymoon  6 місяців тому +1

Thank you, Steph! The comments here have been interesting. Several people actually remove their wheels themselves and bring them to the tire shop for the new tires. That certainly safe approach. Unfortunately, as this episode illustrates, anytime, someone else is jacking your trailer there is a significant risk of damage. In hindsight, I wish I had gotten down on the ground beneath our trailer and micromanaged the entire process. I think you have to be willing to do that because we could not have stressed anymore the importance of properly jacking our trailer and it still got messed up. 🤦‍♂️

I have a two axle trailer. I use only H rated tires and only american made, NO Chinese junk. I carry two spares for my trailer and two for my truck. Even though my tires might last a little longer all get changed at no more than 5 years. I also rotate my trailers and my truck tires at 5000 miles. Sounds like work but it just part of RV life and travel. Maybe I'm lucky but have had only 2 flats and one blowout caused by large rocks falling off a cliff onto the highway, this is after 10 years and 100,000 mi;es of travel. don't go cheap with your tires

Good points made in comments regarding tire shops. Do NOT trust them with a travel trailer. Had my tires changed at Goodyear last year and gave them the spiel about proper jack points. They then went straight to the wrong part of the frame. I stopped them, got out the Trailer Aid and forced them to do one tire at time while I backed it on and off.
Another time I had an axle issue and watched the dealer, after I discussed with him, jack the camper up by the axle. He stated they do it all the time. Axle needed replacing anyway so I let it slide. But maybe, just maybe, that is how the axle was bent in the first place!
As Regan said many years ago, Trust but Verify!

Strange, by coincidence in timing, and with this video, I just replaced 2 tires on my twin-axle Escape 5.0 TA. The tires (Rainier) were a brand I wasn't familiar with and I already had problems with 2 tires and one axle 3 years ago. The tires just I replaced were about 4-1/2 years old. I inspect my travel trailer like an aircraft and perform preventative maintenance on this Escape constantly. I do not like break downs on the road.

So sorry this happened to you. We feel your pain. This trip we had the galley cabinet fall off in Mississippi (Airstream of DFW got Airstream Inc. to give us a courtesy warranty for that repair). We also had a reverse polarity at our "friends" house which ruined the charger (in South Carolina). All of the front 4WD seals had to be replaced because of a squealing noise in the front end (Texas) of our truck. Lastly, our refrigerator developed an ammonia leak and it had to be replaced (Arizona). Glad you made it home safely and good luck with your repairs.

Overall, I think they are a good company and they are doing their best, but the tire installers have very little if any experience dealing with RVs and mistakes are sometimes going to happen. Overall, you’re probably wise to either bring the wheels to them yourself, or go to a dedicated RV service center. By the way, thank you for sharing your story. It’s helpful to know that we are not the only ones.

Shawn, Thanks for reminding me (and probably hundreds more!) to check that date on your tires. Ours is hitting 6 years so guess what we are doing soon. In my case, our travel trailer has been sitting in driveway for last two years due to health issues. Should that be a factor in the age question as whether to replace them?

It’s good to know that they did you guys right by fixing your Airstream. I use Discount tire also for all my vehicles. Our Airstream has the 3 inch lift kit, and they couldn’t reach the jacking points with their floor jack. So I use my yellow tire ramp like yours and had them change one tire at a time. By doing this I also noticed that one of the tires was different than the other three, which they quickly replaced. But we still had a tire blowout with only 2,000 miles on the new tires. As you guys did we limped into a discount tire store near by and they replaced the tire free of charge. The new tires installed were Michelin Agilis Cross Climate LT 225/75R/16, Load Range E (2523) If anyone else is having problems with these tires please comment below. As for your trip killer, as long as everyone was safe it’s always a good trip with a great story to tell. We have been watching you guys for a long time, in fact that’s why we bought our 2018 Airstream in December 2017 and we still love our 28 ft. Airstream. Thanks and enjoy every moment together.

We pulled our 5th wheel to Seattle from central Indiana and I thought to myself "self, you should chance out those tires!" but no Bluto... they had plenty of tread. Well, on the return 90 degree temperatures, heading into the mountains, BAM a blow out. Pulled it up on my ramp, slipped on the spare, less than 15 minutes I was back on the interstate! Then less than a mile up the road, BAM another one let loose. Yea... I bought 5 new ones like I should have before I left.

Another great video on something that every RV owner will find out about . I was home in NY & knew I needed to change my tires ( the tread was good & I always check the pressure) but we wanted to do a short 180 mile trip for a week I said will change them when we get back . We had a blow out 30 miles from home on the way back . did some small damage & I put spare on . In 2022 I purchased a new super duty & got the factory TPMS system & there are no batteries & it comes up on your dash . I have a video about it on my channel . I highly recommend it.

Having a single axle Airstream I am a bit OCD about my tires. I wanted to rotate the tires this spring before our first trip but I have heard too many horror stories about tire stores. So, I jacked up the trailer in the driveway and did the job myself. I now know that the jack in my F150 is adequate for the job (for our 20fb) and I know that I can change a tire very quickly if I have a problem on the road. I have the smaller Tireminder monitor that has a rechargeable battery and a usb power cable so it is always on when we are traveling. Glad you are safe and the Airstream did not suffer any damage. Safe Travels.

Hello Kristi and Sean, my wife and I have a similar story. We were coming home with our 22 ft’ Bambi from N.Y. To N.C. And were currently in Penn. mile marker 39. When we had just pulled into a rest stop to let our Chihuahua and Jack Russell go poopy. As we were backing out and going down the ramp to this really busy Interstate we heard what sounded like a shotgun blast. Turned out our right trailer tire had blown a hole as big as my fist outward. Well, luckily we slowly backed up 25 ft. Back to our parking spot.
We did not have a jack that could lift our trailer high enough to get the spare tire in the wheel well. Could not make it to a campground so we called Coach-Net for help. After waiting 4 hours and no help we were totally screwed!
Then the heavens opened up and who showed up to help us was a trucker and two chinese speaking (Mechanics?). The two chinese guys had a large enough jack to lift our camper(from the Airstream lift spot- I told them where to lift it). Got the spare on and we were on our way!
In thanks we had just come from Bully Hill vineyards where we had purchased 4 cases of wine. Well those guys got a free bottle of their choice along with the truck driver who also was from NC. Suffice to say when we got home we changed both tires and promised to never let them go for more than 4 years before replacing them. Also bought a hydraulic jack and I cut a wooden block that we could set the jack on that was the perfect height to change a tire. We will not be caught (Flat-footed haha) again!

Thank you for another excellent video on lessons learned! Our experience with our new (3 days of ownership) to us 2018 30’ Int’l tire replacement three days ago, started, with Discount Tire looking to jack the trailer up between the two tires, which I quickly stopped, and asked him to put a. block on his jack and use the factory jack point. His jack would not reach that high, so we went with the tire wedge and replaced them one at a time, including the spare, which was great to see a young buck laying on his back struggle with removing that spare from the cradle. Two and a half hours later we departed as happy campers! By the Way - we did not disconnect our Equalizer WD hitch, so I hope that did not cause a problem?

Called and found out we could upgrade to the new model I-10 and get $90 off if we turned in the old one. We day tripped across the state to their hq in Melbourne and took advantage of that offer. Sorry you had the problem with getting your Airstream jacked up correctly. Hopefully you have or will have your trailer fixed correctly soon, which I am guessing was not an easy or inexpensive repair. When I had all four of our trailer tires replaced last year, I brought a copy of our trailer manual where it stated where to jack up the trailer, and offered the tire dealer the option of using the TrailerAide Ramp (which we use too) as an option to change the tires. Many tire shops are not familar enough with travel trailers to know the correct procedure to jack and replace tires. Glad your Tire Dealer took ownership of the their error. Thanks for reminding us of what we should do. Take care!

One other thing to think about is also checking the date code of the tires before they install them…. since the calendar age of the tires is so important you don’t want to put tires on that were built 18 months ago, or a ‘set’ with significantly mismatched date codes…

What a timely video!! Watched it the morning of my appt at Discount Tires in Lakeland, Fl to replace all four of my 4 year old tires. Brought the AS in and was told (after making payment) that they don’t have a jack suitable to safely lift the trailer. I called several RV supply stores, including AS of Tampa, and no luck picking
up a trailer aid ramp. So the trailer needs to go back to its spot, wait for Amazon to deliver the trailer aid, and return to Discount Tire. Btw, Discount Tire will not allow use of the trailer aid in its lot, so I have to remove two at a time and deliver them to the store to be changed out. Lucky I was not stranded and looking for a repair!

I wish I had bought one before. It made tire changing a breeze. Nobody wants to be on the interstate with a flat and have to use bottle jacks and pieces of 2 x 4's to get their RV off the ground to change a tire. That ramp is awesome. I've heard that some people say it doesn't lift their RV high enough. No problem. Bring along a piece of 2 x 6 and put the ramp on top of it. That should do the job. Again, great video!!
