can you share a link where you found the differential options for the year truck? i have a 2018 and mine doest look like either from the diagrams in the vid. thanks
I've got a very similar 2020 Silverado, but I have the 8 speed. Here's what I do; oil change when the computer says 50% (Castrol Syntec), transmission service every year (because I plow with it), diffs and t-case fluids every 50,000km (about 30,000miles). I put about 25,000km/ year so that ends up being every other year. Spark plugs, and plug wires at 100,000km (about 62,000miles). I reviewed the manual and came up with these numbers because they're close or better, and I like nice round easy to remember numbers. LOL Yes, go with the supercharger. Wondering how the transmission will hold up to that kind of power or if you've got plans to help is survive.
Just wait until you get the Transmission Shutter. There is a TSB on it in all GM Vehicles. My Dealership tried to get "Me" to pay the money for a Triple Fluid Flush (Up to $800.00). I said "No Thanks". Went to my local GMC Dealership, they did it on the Drive Train Warranty. Then it returned and I had to have New Torque Converter and Valve Body replaced, again on the Drive Train Warranty. It is said that G.M. builds the worse Transmissions and I believe it. Shutter is in every line of vehicle with 8 and 10 speed Transmission.
I just did my rear and front differential. The rear is a reusable gasket unlike the front where it needs to be replaced. My oil was ridiculous dark. I used valvoline 75w/90 gear oil for both differential. Save me some labor time for a DIY project. Had my battery replaced, ac and serpentine belt at a local repair shop. I DIY by rear brakes. My truck is currently about 97,200k miles
I have a 2015 Silverado and have 105, 000 miles on my truck and you can use the rear reusable gasket. I have changed my gear oil 2 or 3 times and I have never had any issues with the rear gasket.
@@MrRGiller it’s not designed to be reusable because just like a rubber gaskets heat and time distort them. Ignorance would be believing other wise. I personally wouldn’t waste my time reusing an old gasket/seal. And before you say it new gaskets/seals can go bad too but less likely over a reused one
I had transmission flushed at 32,000 miles at dealership. I changed dif fluids both front and rear and also changed transfer case fluid. Now at almost 45k I'm going to drop pan on tranny and change filter and new fluid. The chevy changing transmission filter and fluid is probably the most important thing.
Just purchased all my front and rear diff parts and oil and also everything for my transmission service as well. I also am going to drain transfer case fluids and replace it with fresh stuff. I'm currently at 54K so I feel good about getting to it soon. Cant wait to see the truck after your new mods. Always enjoy watching your vids!
Absolutely install the supercharger, and you neglected to mention the most overlooked component under the rear of your truck! Every 50k check your MUFFLER BEARING for alignment and wear!! side note, I have 120k on my 2019 Trailboss, and never had a problem with the lifters. otherwise, great vid.
@@rayg5445 5k and I replaced the transmission fluid with redline D6 including a transmission thermostat upgrade which keeps my trans temp under 155° regardless of ambient temperature 🤒

I have the same truck and like you, reviewed the owners manual. Based on my history of owning vehicles over the years, I simply cut in half the time at what mileage is at, in order to affect maintenance on my truck. At 33K I flushed my transmission(8-spd), and was shocked at how bad the fluid looked. I flushed my transmission again at 70K and it is doing well. I will drop the pan and replace the filter at close to 100K. My ECM acted up so ended up replacing it. $500 for the computer board and close to $500 to program it. GM has you over a barrel on that one. BTW-if you have not flushed your radiator by 50K, do so.
I had a 2009 and flushed the coolant at 150k. It was fine. Did the transmission flush and filter at 100k miles and the fluid was still red and in good shape. And I tow a heavy trailer. All fluids replaced with Amsoil.
Bought my silverado 1500hd new 2002. At 1000 miles changed all diff, xfer case and oil to get out what i call break in metal wear. Not sure why more people dont do this as those parts kick more metal off as they first mesh together. Then went recommended service intervals. My rear diff has drain plug so never removed cover. At 230k with no issues. Want to get trail boss but not sure they make a reliable truck anymore. May get TB with baby diesel for my final truck.
I didn't do my 08 GMC 1500 (TX edition) with the limited slip. The carrier bearings were trash at 120. Pretty sure that was lack of maintenance. However, Just did the rear axle seals and brakes on the 08 at 285K. Looked good and no issues. Went with Mobile one (with limited slip) fluid and OEM gasket. Axle bearings actually looked good. Never did anything to my 96. Sold it with 185 on the clock. My 08 has the 3+OD 4L60E that goes back to the 90s. Not good gas mileage, but still on the OEM fluid. Talking to a trans shop owner and several mechanics I asked if I should service. The question was "when was the last time you did it" I said " I haven't". They said "Don't touch it". I asked why and they said clutch material in the fluid is likely keeping it going. On the good side I'd see 350K. Anything above that is borrowed time. They indicated it will likely have shorted life, but should see over 300K which is coming up, so just run it till it breaks. Its towed a bit, but not heavy much. I'm shooting for 350 and due to having payments on my wifes daily and me not commuting. Will likely just tow it home and buy a new trans. My FIL is ASE certified so he said he'd help replace it and give me his trans jack. So, that is likely to happen in the next couple of years. A remanned trans is 1800 bucks from Summit. If I ever get a 10 speed defiantly doing the trans services at the dealer as its smart money. I told myself if that truck sees 250 with me it will likely see 500K. That is where I'm headed, but 14 (maybe 15) mpg on the highway kind of sucks. It gets around 13 on mixed. I might end up with a Transit or sprinter and a small SUV beater though (nice to haul and keep dirt bikes locked up).
For practically every driver out there, our driving would all classify as “severe”. The extremely hot summers in Texas alone would classify for severe driving conditions. We all do short haul driving once in a while, stop and go traffic, not to mention any idling some of do. Oil and fluids are cheap, engines, transmissions, diffs, etc are all expensive. Always over change your fluids.
Always remove your fill plug first before you go to take it out and it either won’t or snaps at least you’ll still be able to drive it if not you may be walking
I don’t know why they don’t advertise this at all, but it’s like the same part number with a dash one after it or it’s one digit different than the recommended part number. Anyway, GM/AC Delco have a grape scented version of their gear oil. Took them hundreds of years to remove the stinkiest stuff known to man, then they don’t let anyone know about it smh…
I personally drop the pan, and remove filter, fluid transfer pump all transmission fluid out of the pan while still in between exhaust and transmission, brake cleaner all over some microfiber rags of which I throw away and put in the new filter, then clean rags to absorb anything left over. Make sure not to get caught on anything in there. Gentle gentle, all without dropping pan completly. The new gasket is a bit of a pain but again not as bad as o2 sensors and dropping the exhaust. The exhaust bolts never want to come out and the exhaust gasket usually need to be replaced if you do. I am moving to true dual exhaust soon and will be routing that sencod pipe around the transmission pan.
I miss my trail boss. It's been in the shop for three weeks. The transmission started making noise, so I brought it in to get it checked at my local Chevy dealership. I believe they said it's my clutch plate hitting the torque converter but I'm not 100% sure. The part I'd back order so it's gonna be a while to get it fix. Specifically I live in maui hawaii. They did provide me with a rental and my warranty is covering the cost of the truck and my rental. This happened 2months before my warranty expires. I love the truck but this is the second time I had to bring it in. Now I'm thinking of trading it in because of all the problems I been having with this truck. I have a 2008 tacoma that I built for overlanding off roading and it never gave this much problems. I bought my trail boss because of my taco is too small for my growing kids.
Yea the converters shed the lining on the lock up clutch and then starts spreading metal and sends it through the pump and... well guess what step you're at...
Thanks for reminding me about the differential cover, I bought a new cover about 2 and 1/2 years ago I still haven't put it on. I have 60,000 mi on my truck and she just turned 5 years old so I think it's time I switch out the cover
When you install your two-post lift do yourself a favor and throw the 3/4 wedge anchors that come with it away. Grab a couple tubes of Dewalt AC100 Gold two part epoxy, some 5/8 galvanized threaded rod with washers/nuts. Drill your holes, blow them out and then use an old damp rag/t shirt on a drill bit to help wash out the hole. Fill the hole with the epoxy (do not get it anywhere you dont want it), lather some on the threaded rod as well. You have less than 90 seconds per to get it done....probably less in texas. I fought with the 3/4 wedge anchors and they just kept spinning. I feel safer with a single threaded rod epoxied in than i would with all 10 of the holes with wedge anchors.
Looking forward to the shop update. I got all my lifts installed and working perfect. I'm so happy to finally get them done and now off to the in floor heating install of the manifolds and combi boiler! Take care and don't work too hard bud!!
8:53 any of those specks that manage to avoid the magnet could end up between the ring & pinion, or worse, in the bearings. Foreign metal getting into your bearings is the worst.
A great upgrade would have been a new diff cover from Banks .I don't own a truck but have watched numerous YT vids on how much cooler it keeps your diff.
Always loosen the fill bolt before draining the oil. If it's stuck, you're up a creek and finding a spare rear diff cover while your pumpkin air dries.
Timely video, the diff service is on my to-do list this weekend ahead of a cross-country drive. And do the Whipple! I’m 10,000 miles behind you but have started pricing out the same thing for my Trail Boss. It’s about the smiles per gallon.
I've got a 2019 Z-92 silverado with 110,000 miles change oil on schedule change transmission fluid twice and I've had no major issues maybe a hard shift here and there from a dead stop but that's it.
Hay Chad, I have a 2020 Silverado RST, I also have the Pulsar LT Programmer on my 5.3L. Just wanted to let you know that if you turn back on the start/stop and the AFM before doing the E-check it will pass without unplugging it. E-check looks at emissions stuff and start/stop and AFM are emissions stuff. Worked on mine. I did E-check a few days ago and it failed so I reinabled that stuff and went back today and it passed. Just something for you to try when your E-check is do.
I ditched my 22 RST after only 18k miles. After being in the warranty shop 3 times and the last straw the right side lifters failed and had to be replaced. Which meant that engine had to be broke open. I’m so done with Chevy. Very disappointed………
Curious what you have noticed with Seafoam? I have used it for 2 decades for my lawn mowers, motorcycles, etc... sometimes those dont get used for 5+ months and using seafoam I have never had an issue. Those unfortunate motors that did not get it sometimes had issues. Especially if it was a carbed and not injected.
Couple of things, you should put a STRUT on the bottom of the door, otherwise it will begin sag over time when the door is open. Secondly, did you not have to have inspections on the garage as you completed certain things, ie, slab, framing, roofing, etc.? I would think if this were done, you may have avoided some of the delays on the electrical plan. But I know every city/county is a bit different. Keep the videos coming, cannot wait to see the finished building.
How does your wheels do at highway speeds? I’ve got almost the same set up. And when I’m driving on highways, anything over about 74 I get a vibration. I’ve got the tires balanced and aligned. Any recommendations?
Would absolutely like to see v a super charger install . I have the same truck 2020 Trail Boss 5.3 with 26k miles and have been thinking about doing this . But an not sure if my stock rods and pistons need to change.
Considering how it has kept fuel sending units afloat in C5s all these years, it's the only one I'll use. I just put the first bottle in my truck at 18k.
@@01CorvetteZO6 hell yeah! I've been using it for years. C5? ZO6? Great minds think alike..... Lol. GM dude here, currently looking for a gently used C6 ZO6 with the right price tag. Has to be black too! Lol. I'd even take a C5 ZO6 if the color combination was right the mileage and the price all aligned........ 💯🔥🇺🇲
They still don't have a diff drain bolt in the gen 4s? Guessing the transmission also doesn't have a drain bolt either You really only have to worry about e85 if your truck sits for months. I've used nothing but e85 since I bought my 2011 and it's been just fine filling up about once a month as it isn't the daily. I'll take the hp and torque bump with a cheaper fill-up.
Actually in town short trip driving puts you into severe service intervals. Not just aggressive or towing a lot. Shaft drive openers are far superior. No trolley in the way.
Thanks for the video & info! I’m curious what you might advise with going to the dealer for the trans service if I have 40k, lowered suspension (includes rear helper air bags) w/ a Pulsar LT, Oil can separator, and a cold air intake? I’d like to have them do the service as well, but concerned they’ll document things and potentially void warranty’s involved. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks
Seems like if you wanted to SC it, you would have gone 6.2L from the get go. If that is the route maybe teasing up to a 6.2L TB/ZR2 is in order. Hope the garage holds up to the crazy weather!
Great video! As fun as the shop videos are, it's nice to go back to your "roots" and show some work on the truck. You absolutely should SC it...something I want to do and would like to see the DIY method!
Go off grid with your shop. Find budget solar panels to generate 5kw with sum Tesla vehicle battery packs. Led lighting, highly efficient AC unit, and gas heat
I thought it was 50-60,000 if you were frequently towing or have bigger rims and tires otherwise 75-80,000 should be a good time to change. I think 90-100,000 is recommended by gm which seems like some "at your own risk", if your willing to wait that long type shit. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I ended up on your page from looking to move to Hawaii from North Fort Worth sooner or later, been in Texas for too long. I just watched this and I have a 2018 silverado LT Texas edition 5.3 with around 55K miles to date. I always took my truck to get service at the dealer while the drivetrain is under warranty and just when I was thinking to take my truck in for service the transmission when I was closing in on 50K my 1st and 2nd gear had a nasty grind noise and i took it in just in time to stay under warranty cost me nothing. Now watching this video I might have to look into changing out the differential fluid.
I definitely want to see a supercharger install! I have a 2011 Suburban and I want to supercharge it. I've no intention of racing it, but I'm tired of not being able to pass the Yahoos that have no issue with going 10-20mph UNDER the speed limit on a highway.
I can hear the GM Engineers when designing that trucks drive train. OK, hear me out, we make 2 different types of rear and front ends and, wait for it, we use different capacities and different types of fluids. I have a 2018 Sierra and had to let the dealer do all this in the spring of '23. I don't have a place with room to do that myself.
Gravy tickets are what we called the RO's that had all the flushes and services sold. Can't tell you how many times I was approached by customers on my lunch break at my favorite lunch spot about why an oil change turned into $1500 service. We didn't sell it but we did do the work. I felt guilty but it's how we made our money.
Had a 2015 silverado that killed the number 7 cyclinder twice. New springs and heads worked on twice plus a new cam shaft. Last weekend, my 50th birthday weekend, while checking out fishing spots at broken bow lake in oklahoma, i was going up an incline at a slow speed and gave it some gas to make it up the incline and bang. Engine light came on and rough idle. Same as before. Milked it 11 miles to a dealership. I decided to sell it as is and bought a 2021 trail boss Z-71. Not spending another 6k. And we were 2 hours from home with no transportation. Wife has a 2022 trailboss and likes mine more.
If you take a pry bar and wedge it btween the exhaust cross over pipe and the crossmember, you. An pry the exhaust down and remove the transmission pan. That way you do not have to remove the exhaust making it easier to service the transmission.
I have the 2022 ZR2, put 45k miles on it so far, gonna do the diffs and trans real real soon, super topical video lol I did the DirtKing UCA's the new yellow ones are pretty amazing, but since you like that light blue you might want to go with Peak Suspension UCA's but only because of the color lmao
most common problems in this Chevy is the electronic steering box if you go in mud or water its directly jamed and the steering get heavy I suffer this issue many time when its raining and streets get flooded
Technically, yes. But the fill level spec from the factory gives a fairly large range (.59" - 1.57") so there is some flexibility if it's not dead on 1" below the fill hole.
Cool thanks for the video! Don’t forget about your transfer case that that one is easy. I have the same year TB and I was surprised at how dark mine looked after 45k.
I'll pass on anything GM these days; I use to be big GM advocate, not any more - burnt too many times. Remove the Y pipe to drop the tranny pan - give me a break. And the measurement of the fill line on the diffs, that's ridiculous - just lower the fill hole. It's like they set you up to fail.

Yes do supercharger build!!! If you can do detailed install, looking to do one on mine as well!!! Bout damn time!!!
Beautiful truck, I own a 2020 6.2l and I’ve added 3.0l whipple sc to it. Runs pretty awesome.
Always loosen the fill bolt before draining the oil. If it's stuck, you're up a creek and finding a spare rear diff cover while your pumpkin air dries.
Came here to say the very same thing, now he isn't in the rust belt so that helps, but it's just good practice.
here 7😊
Timely video, the diff service is on my to-do list this weekend ahead of a cross-country drive.
And do the Whipple! I’m 10,000 miles behind you but have started pricing out the same thing for my Trail Boss. It’s about the smiles per gallon.
Can a Whipple be added to a 5.3 with a factory motor?
@@vcastilloaz Yes. whipplesuperchargers.com/i-2029-gm-5-3l-l84-gen-6-truck-supercharger-kit-2019-2024.html?q=
GREAT TO KNOW! thank you for sharing.
Thanks for more truck content! Can’t wait to see the fenders and bedsides installed on the 4th gen. Please show plenty of details!
Blower, blower, blower and I only say this because I’m living vicariously through you 😂😂
There’s factory recommended service. Then there’s dealer recommended.
Stick to the maintenance schedule in the owners manual. Dealerships often try to up sell you or accelerate your schedule.
agreed.
My vote is definitely for forced induction and really pumped to see it with wide body panels! Can’t wait for the upcoming videos🎉
Yes sir!!! DIY super charger installation video!!! Whipple!! That thing will be a beast..🔥🔥🔥🔥
First thing is to make sure on the rear differential that the fill bolt can be removed. That's a must!!!
16:09 “yes🥵yeess🥵YEEEEEESSSSSSSS😫”-Plankton
Yes, do it! Make the changes!!!!
Great info! I need to do my diff fluid. Im also at 60k. Side mount opener would be the ticket on the overhead door.
There is no owner manual in my 2024 ZR2 . Chevy asks you to download it. The paper manual is going the way of the dinosaur.
I would love to see a 5.3L Whipple upgrade project in your hands. Mahalo !🤙🏼
That garage is Beautiful!!!
Do it! I just ordered a Whipple for mine. Waiting game begins.
Definitely Super Charger, let's gooo! 💪
You always put 93 in your Silverado? I have a 5.3l 2019 and it says it takes regular gas. Or do you do the 93 just with the fuel treatment?
I run 93 all the time on my 16
Yes to the Whipple!
Absolutely do a supercharger but what about the pro charger with a stage 2 cam instead? That’s what I’m considering for my 2023 high country 5.3l.
I don't know I kept up with maintenance on my 2015 Silverado. Specifically the transmission and my transmission still went bad at 130,000 mi
Techron by Chevron, good fuel system cleaner!.
Was going to make this exact statement.
If you use Costco gas.. you better be sure to put that additive in your tank.
They still don't have a diff drain bolt in the gen 4s?
Guessing the transmission also doesn't have a drain bolt either
You really only have to worry about e85 if your truck sits for months. I've used nothing but e85 since I bought my 2011 and it's been just fine filling up about once a month as it isn't the daily. I'll take the hp and torque bump with a cheaper fill-up.
Can’t wait to to see the fenders and the 👑
Actually in town short trip driving puts you into severe service intervals.
Thanks
Yes to the supercharger. Should have purchased the 6.2 though. Absolutely love mine 😊
You do know top tier fuels already have cleaners in it right so your wasting money with extra cleaner
Seems like if you wanted to SC it, you would have gone 6.2L from the get go. If that is the route maybe teasing up to a 6.2L TB/ZR2 is in order. Hope the garage holds up to the crazy weather!
when filling your rear diff does the truck need to be seated flat? does it make a difference?
Yes to the Whipple. Did one on mine and love it - 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 6.2L
LMNT “It’s Got What Plants Crave” lol!
If you add blower, get ready for issues...
Representing New Zealand whoop whoop!! 😎
Supercharger DEFINITELY!! I’m thinking about doing in my 2022 Silverado but that’s very few people (trustworthy) online that show how we can do it.. 🔥
Not the engineers fault. Different factories make the axles for GM. Different ratios in ring and pinion gears etc..
YES super charger
Gravy tickets are what we called the RO's that had all the flushes and services sold. Can't tell you how many times I was approached by customers on my lunch break at my favorite lunch spot about why an oil change turned into $1500 service. We didn't sell it but we did do the work. I felt guilty but it's how we made our money.
Yes you should most definitely do a supercharged system on the trail boss!!
Techron fuel treatment. Very clean intake runners when I removed the intake at 100k to replace a pcv valve.
Supercharge that bad boy
My 2020 hit 100k miles on Saturday……Sunday afternoon no start 😮 once it started up, misfiring and running like 💩. Now waiting for the dealership.
Lifter collapse?
I'd delete the DFM lifters before installing the super charger.
You would have too. Aftermarket cams don't work with them. You also need to lock out the cam phaser.
If you take a pry bar and wedge it btween the exhaust cross over pipe and the crossmember, you. An pry the exhaust down and remove the transmission pan. That way you do not have to remove the exhaust making it easier to service the transmission.
Yes , most definitely supercharge it!!!!
Always make sure you are able to remove the fill plug on your housing before you drain the fluid. Same thing with your transfer case
Thank you so much for the recommendation service!
Air conditioned is mandatory bro!
Beautiful garage 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
I have the 2022 ZR2, put 45k miles on it so far, gonna do the diffs and trans real real soon, super topical video lol
I did the DirtKing UCA's the new yellow ones are pretty amazing, but since you like that light blue you might want to go with Peak Suspension UCA's but only because of the color lmao
Kia Ora from New Zealand. Love watching your videos. Keep up the good work and good luck with the new garage build
most common problems in this Chevy is the electronic steering box if you go in mud or water its directly jamed and the steering get heavy I suffer this issue many time when its raining and streets get flooded
Great video do you think your rear differential level is off do to the truck not being level? Great video
Great video and that Silverado is killer! 🤙🏻
Really? Are those your two biggest complaints? Ford and dodge are even worse. All American trucks suck. Just gm looks best.
@@boostedbavarian id never buy Ford or Dodge either, bought an 87 ranger new, sold it after 12 months, gm use to be better...
My 2016 gmc has 134000 miles runs great and shifts like a gm every now and then but over all pretty smooth. change oil every 3k miles
Hey brother, I just bought a 2023 Trail Boss with a 6.2. I want to install a pulsar LT on my truck but can't find one for a 23 model. Do you know if they make one for my truck.
Yes to the DIY supper charge.
Super excited about a super charged Silverado!
TWO CHEVY PRERUNNERSS!!! sooo sick dude
this first time I've seen someone say you have to drop the exhaust what did dealer charge you?
