I’ve been with Traktor for years, the reason I chose Traktor was because Serato was always promoted for the DJs that were scratch DJs and Traktor was for those who just love to blend music especially House music and get creative with the remix decks. Like always it’s all about preference, both of these softwares are amazing in their own right. Thank God for choice. Play on my peeps!
I have been using Traktor since 2000 when it first came out. Their evolution is just amazing.... DVS quality, effects quality, UI, customization for me is the best. Yes, if you like Traktor stick to Traktor designed controllers NI ones or something like Denon MC6000.
I use both. Started off with Serato, but Traktor seem too always be my go too while i am on the go because of the on board mixing controls. And you dont necessarily need hardware to start djing with Traktor_which saves you money starting out for the new guys. In conclusion when playing house music **Traktor** is my go to. HipHop/ R&B / Afrobeats / Dancehall **Serato**. Work Flow: 1-Download Tracks / 2-Process in Mixed in Key / 3-Process in Platinum Notes / 4-Create Crates in Serato / 5-Rekord Buddy / *6* Start Playing *
Thank you!!! That was an excellent overview of two main ecosystems. My good friend is getting started and I was helping him get setup... he chose Serato specific gear. I thought maybe I'd better get in myself so I can help him but I'm neck deep in Native Instruments and I love it... I'm going with Traktor of course but that's the last piece of gear I need to complete my Native world for now. Thanks for the info!
Been a Traktor user since it first came out and i must say that the software is nothing short of amazing if you know how to use it properly. I always saw Traktor more as a tool for Techno/house music and Serato more for HipHop/Breaks..
You are the only person that said the correct thing about Traktor. It is about creativity. Not just basic Dj-ing. Traktor needs to add. Smart crates and smart lists. And a plug a play functionality with most of the hardware that's out there today. One thing I think that was missed in your comparison. That Traktor can be mapped to most of the controllers That a out there. That is what I had to do. Anyway great comparison. Thank you.
Serato has better library management (smart crates) and offers support for video. Traktor allows for greater creativity (remix & stems decks) and offers better UI & hardware personalization. It generally comes with more functionality out of the box, which also means Serato is a bit easier to learn.
I got Serato intro with my controller. But almost immediately decided to upgrade to Serato DJ Pro. It's never let me down before. So I stick by my choice. I do however, recommend the expansions like pitch 'n time and FX. But in the end choosing between your digital dj platform software is a lot like choosing between cars. They'll all get you from A to B, but you just have to learn to drive the one of your choosing.
your starting to DJ? cheap & unlimited midi controllers, no specific sound card? You want to hack the DJ software? Basic to complicated creative routine or live set? Traktor all the way.
I've been using traktor fro about 7 Years and every time I uneed to use IT I just get impressed of how great this software is. The mapping for crontrollers is simple and the environment is awesome . Actually I'm using traktor pro 3 but i'm ready to move forward traktor pro 3.1 so I hope that plug and play with the most common controllers Will be able soon. I'm using a Pioneer ddj-400 with traktor and no problem at all.
Traktor. Running S4, Rane Twelve MKII, and F1 and sometimes use Launchpad. setup exceeds anything my son and I could ever come up with. The remix decks options are literally limitless.
This is one of the most useful and evenhanded platform comparisons I've ever seen. Having watched this, I feel like I know exactly which one will likely be right for me. Thank you!!
I am a Traktor user since 2000 and still have the very first version of the software. I love remix and stems decks, F1 can play both if you have 2 F1s you are God)) Unlimited opportunities and creativity. I didn’t know you have to pay for all add ons in Serato that’s really weird. I’d say Traktor like iPhone with its own software and hardware and Serato is like Android with only the software or platform and hardware makes whoever can )))) And all we know which is the best phone, you know what I mean.
i play with traktor since 2011 and i love it and still stick with it. i also tried serato and guess what...i liked it too :) both software a great and lots of djs dont even use most of the stuff they both have to offer. i love digital vinyl, one of the coolest inventions for me :D

I suggest if you are a newer DJ or just starting out, find local DJs that currently use both software and different platform setups. Ask a bunch of questions and see which may feel better for you.
Digital DJ Tips I’m unsure if I should buy a 2nd controller, the S2 to get the free software or if I should just pay the $99 for Traktor by itself. I already have a Pioneer 4 channel controller. Any opinions?
I tried Serato DJ Pro while still loyal to Traktor and NI. I could not get the layout fully but it is a good piece of software. Unfortunately not for me. I just can’t get with it. I love the new Traktor Pro 3 layout and features. So I’ll be sticking to Traktor. Great video and comparison!
Traktors track analyzation, markers, BPM and key needs major improvements. It only works well with straight 4/4 electronic music. Anything outside of that, it’s fiddly and needs too much human intervention making the adding of new music very time consuming.
Serato DJ Pro is only $129 if you have entry level hardware for Serato DJ Lite. If you have a DVS mixer like the Rane 72 or Pioneer S9, the full version of Serato is unlocked for free and the DVS plugin is not needed. Pro level controllers like the DDJ-SX3 and NS7III also unlock the full version of Serato without having to pay the $129.
But the software is kind of hardwired to your hardware. You may need to buy the actual license if you want to plug in a different gear other than the one for which you got the software for. I'm just starting out to DJ. Please correct me if I'm wrong
I've been using Serato Pro for over a year. I have no complaints, it does everything I want. I am considering an upgrade in equipment to the Traktor Kontrol S4, however. My question, can I transfer all cue points I have created in Serato to Traktor?
Great presentation, I am a Traktor user but wanted to know about Serato to see what they hype was about. After watching this I am glad I am a Traktor user! I know I picked the right software. I love my F2’s and the remix decks! Thanks
I switched to Serato over a year ago, due to the fact that all my DJ homies use Serato so it was a hassle to plug in and play my sets in between theirs. I also felt that Traktor left the vinyl/scratch users who use DVS hanging. They began to make controllers without jog wheels and started to cater to the EDM DJs highly. It took them forever to update and go back to including all format DJS to use their system. I will say, though Traktor has a solid system that rarely showed glitches or crashed, since switching to Serato DJ I have had the program crash multiple times, get stuck, or just nonresponsive with my Roland 505 controller. But until I can show up to a club or venue and plug into any mixer with Traktor, I'm gonna stay with Serato.
Dj Aztlan I think Traktor is by far superior to serato especially in the cost benefit analysis.. but I agree entirely that it’s entirely house/edm focused. In fact you’d be hard to find any of their promo videos not featuring an electro artist.
@@rvallozzi One reason I started with Traktor was it affordability for sure and I think Traktor's ability to make a sound grid that is spot on is great as well. It would be great to see when mixers and other products will not be so software regulated. Meaning that a DJ with any platform can rock the party without having to be worried if the mixer or DJ hardware supports your software. I think Denon is trying to test the waters, but it's still very far away for DJs to buy in.
1) If you're using a Numark NV I or II, Serato forces you to prepare tracks before you can start djing with them otherwise your beat grids won't show up on the NV's screens. So this means no track preparation on the fly if you're using an NV. 2) Slicer mode in Serato only works when the track is playing; slices don't work unless the track is playing which messes up you're creativity. Traktor allows you to use slicer (freeze mode) regardless if the track is playing or not. Traktor for the win.
If u djing in a club their setup is more serato oriented and u bring only your computer with tractor software. Does it make easy to set up wen u have to play right after the guy hows been using serato
There's a lot of variables here that could make it easy/harder - it's one of the reasons CDJs are still found in clubs everywhere and probably will be for a long time!
TBH, I've never used Serato personally, just seen it in effect on different occasions. I've been with Traktor since the 1st Final Scratch and have never had a reason to change. I just recently upgraded to Traktor Pro Scratch 3, but now my laptop has been trippin' so I can't give an honest opinion yet. Stay tuned
Great information! I ‘ll stay with traktor and upgrade the software. The new dvs compatibility is huge as you pointed out. Plus I can’t afford serato at this time. Thanks!
The pricing on Serato is wrong. It‘s 129 if you don‘t have SDJ Pro specific hardware. But if you have it‘s free. And he also should have mentioned that SDJ has subscription plans.
Serkan Kocak.... You mean if I were to buy a certified Serato DJ mixer then the actual software for Serato would be completely free of charge?? Also, would I have to buy the optional DVS, FX and P'NT or is that also included?
yes in a way that serato is tied to your hardware and if you want to use it on another piece of kit, lets say with a pioneer club mixer, you have to actually buy a REAL licence. i learned this the bad way when i bought the DJ-808, thinking i would get the software for free like how pioneer gives away the software with their controllers with no stupid restrictions like that. I sold the 808 btw and switched to traktor.
Personally I like Traktor audio engine more because it has more equalizers, emulated-digitalized of course. Perhaps this feature is unnecessary if you use mixers, but it is useful when you are using a sound card either from the computer, external or a controller. Since this widens the range of genres and styles that you can mix. And Serato seems to me more limited in this sense, Traktor is more usefull for me cause my dj style.
Haven't used Tracktor in about 6 years, but I absolutely LOVED Traktor, but their lack of support for aftermarket hardware made me switch to Serato. If they could, or would make their software work with virtually everything, like Virtual dj, I would most likely switch back in a minute. I bought a Numark NS6II when they were first released and HAD to switch to Serato, thinking that within five to six months, someone would have come out with a mapping for it......... here I am several YEARS later, still waiting. Ready to buy a new controller, but not satisfied with any of the hardware that works with Traktor. 🙁
@@digitaldjtips Open up their platform to aftermarket hardware, and offer a 30 day free trial..... I think Serato would soon start seeing a sharp decline in software sales.
@@digitaldjtips I had a Denon mc3000 that I used on Traktor before I bought my NS6II, had bought a Traktor S4, it malfunctioned within a week... instead of trying another one, I switched to Serato because there were no other controllers that I liked. I would like to try the S4MK2, but don't want to get back into Traktor, then maybe a few years later a controller comes out that I want, only for it NOT to be Traktor compatible.
I'm a Traktor DJ and I was thinking of trying out Serato. I have a Kontrol Z2 mixer and I use Technics 1200s. My setup works for me. However, my Serato DJ friends tell me that I should switch over for cleaner scratching, mixing, and sound. Is there any merit to that assertion? Thanks for your comparison video. It was chock full of useful information!
Best thing to try it out yourself and see what you think, personally I don't agree with those arguments - I'd stick with Traktor if it was what I was used to and enjoyed using
I have a Windows 10 laptop but no DJing hardware (as I don't feel I need turntables... I use laptop keyboard commands to load tracks etc). I use Serato DJ Pro... Connecting laptop to mixing desk/nightclub speakers etc but the sound quality at gigs is truly awful compared to other DJs also using Serato. Is it because of my sound card? Or do I need an Apple Mac? Or is the hardware a compulsory requirement to help with the sound?
I have a question someone might be able to help me with... So I have 2xcdj2000s and a Denon dnx1600, I've never utilized the DNX1600's midi capability so when it comes to these programs, I've seen some guys in clubs have some sort of external box that connects from the equipment to it than to the computer....can anyone help me with this? Excuse my ignorance. I've been die hard traditional from day one and it's only recently I've switched from vinyl to cdjs so when it comes to all this software, I'm a bit lost
Started djeng with 1200’s Technics no different in Serato just save u from carrying crates of vinyls. I don’t see any technological advancement compared to Traktor Dj2 which it has Bar Sync which I think Traktor Pro 3 doesn’t even have, I love that you can concentrate on creativity rather than trying to get the right beat sync which Serato and Traktor Pro 3 is missing from Traktor DJ 2.
You forgot about parallel waveforms in 3.1 which is huge step up (to real king for now in terms of functionality, comparability and pricing. Yeah, you know)
serato have a great arsenal for creativiti!! 4 decks for 4 tracks with cue, loop, flip, slice, 8 slot sampler wich is possible play togheter in sync , trigger, loop, in 4 bank of 8 sp, stability, great library, and more, with traktor for use 8 slot sampler have need use 2 remix decks!!and only 2 decks for tracks
You didn't mention that Traktor still does not have flexible beatgrids. For me that is a huge reasenot not to use it. And I'm not even DJing music with live drumming. I play only 4/4 electronic music. But still, some songs I have change tempo and I really can't stand my beatgrid markers not aligning with the actual beats.
Having used both, I think Serato are very lucky to be where they are. It’s the most expensive option and has the least software development. They are very slow to keep up with latest operating systems and just forget about it you’re looking to get an new M1 Apple product. They’ve barely kept up with the previous OS. The MIDI reassignment is hideous and restrictive. However, it does have stability on its side but other than that, I don’t get the hype.
I'd imagine hardware unlocks make up a large chunk of Serato users so the price isn't as relevant for them, they have awesome stability and brand loyalty from being around a long time
Traktor is like a PC and Serato is like a Mac. Traktor is cheaper, more customizable, and full featured out of box; but is missing some of modern features (ie VJ). Serato is more stable, more pleasing UI, a lot of features; but is more expensive and getting everything dongle (addons) hell.
I've been trying to compare and decide between these 2 softwares. But this is the 1st time(as far as I've seen), someone has said that Serato is more stable than Traktor
Traktor's song sorting leaves a lot to be desired. There's no smart playlists, no way to bookmark two or more tracks that you find work well together and no tag system for sorting your music.
Yes there is smart playlists.. you do it through iTunes. Being able to do it in Serato & iTunes is redundant. That why traktor "doesn't" have it. You just got to know how to link up iTunes to traktor. Traktor users have been able to do this for a very long time, no one knows how to use it is all. It's one of many features that Serato picked up later even though traktor has had it for years ahead of time.
We don't think it is redundant. Many DJs despise using iTunes, and want their DJ software library to be powerful. Rekordbox is a good example of DJ software library that is awesome. Compared to that, Traktor (and indeed Serato!) lag behind.
@@ricketycricket3242 You seem to take pride in a capability that you say Traktor considers redundant and not worth implementing in their own product. 'not a feature but a work-around requiring other software. Perhaps you can enlighten us on how it's done, on both Mac and PC?
Well I'm confused about the prices quoted in this video for getting serato DJ pro... Because if you have bought officially supported hardware, serato DJ pro is free. And depending on what hardware you have bought, some of the add on packages are free, too. Like for example, I have the rane sl3 (bought second hand) and that gives me serato dj pro and serato DVS for free (free download and no subscription fee). So the costs of serato don't stack up as high as you've shown here - or at least, certainly not in all circumstances.
Digital DJ Tips indeed. Chances are that it wont ever happen given the niche market for that application and the considerable developer resourcing to build and maintain that functionality.

They also have to do something with the latency for Pioneer controllers.
It's not hard to have iTunes playlists showing in any DJ software, but that's not the point here.
Serato has better library management (smart crates) and offers support for video. Traktor allows for greater creativity (remix & stems decks) and offers better UI & hardware personalization. It generally comes with more functionality out of the box, which also means Serato is a bit easier to learn.

yes in a way that serato is tied to your hardware and if you want to use it on another piece of kit, lets say with a pioneer club mixer, you have to actually buy a REAL licence. i learned this the bad way when i bought the DJ-808, thinking i would get the software for free like how pioneer gives away the software with their controllers with no stupid restrictions like that.
I sold the 808 btw and switched to traktor.
i have both traktor and serato..my main software for club use is serato.. why? because serato sound more punch and warm
One of the things that's improved markedly in Traktor Pro 3 is the audio engine. You could maybe take another look at it on that basis.
Not the case with 3.1 now
Personally I like Traktor audio engine more because it has more equalizers, emulated-digitalized of course. Perhaps this feature is unnecessary if you use mixers, but it is useful when you are using a sound card either from the computer, external or a controller. Since this widens the range of genres and styles that you can mix. And Serato seems to me more limited in this sense, Traktor is more usefull for me cause my dj style.
Thanks for sharing Rodrigo
Please do not cofuse Serato Scratch Live by Rane with Setato DJ :) Traktor is more superior in sound quality that Serato DJ.
How do I use record decks with traktor or serato? Rather than a controller? You need special vinyl records?
Yes, look for DVS systems and that will explain it
Haven't used Tracktor in about 6 years, but I absolutely LOVED Traktor, but their lack of support for aftermarket hardware made me switch to Serato. 🙁
Yes it feels like this would be a good strategy for NI rather than making controllers themselves
@@digitaldjtips
Open up their platform to aftermarket hardware, and offer a 30 day free trial..... I think Serato would soon start seeing a sharp decline in software sales.
They do make good hardware themselves but it'd free them up to focus on production more which is what they do anyway
Serato is like EA in music industry.
who would you say has the edge on sound quality
Traktor and Rekordbox are the best DJ software for serious equipment, serato is mainly for controllers and Home-DJing ( in my opinion )
An awful lot of DVS/scratch DJs use Serato though, that's its pedigree.
Traktor would be the best DJ software if it had video option but its a great dj software anyway
Hopefully sometime soon...
Best thing to try it out yourself and see what you think, personally I don't agree with those arguments - I'd stick with Traktor if it was what I was used to and enjoyed using
I love my Serato DJ pro
Bro thanks for that great n to the point review. It was super helpful. I appreciate it.
No problem, thanks for watching!
Dose all the songs come with it all do u have to separately download them all ?
You'll need to have your own music (unless you're using a streaming service eg Tidal or SoundCloud GO+ in Serato)
Digital DJ Tips Is there any dj softwares they comes with every song ... that uses UA-cam as a search engine
No such thing :)
Digital DJ Tips there is you.dj
Interesting!
Can you load your songs from Spotify on either of these?
No, currently you can use Tidal on Serato though.
@@digitaldjtips I used to use Djay Pro Algoriddm with Spotify and it was great!
...can't do that anymore :(.....FUCK YOU SPOTIFY!!!
I'm going to go with Mixxx
I have a Windows 10 laptop but no DJing hardware (as I don't feel I need turntables... I use laptop keyboard commands to load tracks etc). I use Serato DJ Pro... Connecting laptop to mixing desk/nightclub speakers etc but the sound quality at gigs is truly awful compared to other DJs also using Serato. Is it because of my sound card? Or do I need an Apple Mac? Or is the hardware a compulsory requirement to help with the sound?
Most likely to do with your sound card, you certainly don't "need" an Apple Mac but they are great for this stuff
Traktor. Just need to figure out how to connect this mic on the S4 MK3 and record the output.
If it's for a livestream/video then get a USB mic and plug straight into your laptop, or get a recorder and hook it up to your output
I can't Agree More of this 2 Monster, With the new release of Traktor pro 3 there's a battlefield between Serato and Traktor!!!!!!
You didn't mention that you can use any sound card on any mixer or usb interface to have Traktor working now.
He says this at ~2:20
I use dvs with Traktor and got the Z2, and it cuts SHARP. Shiz made Djing suuuuuper fun. Looooove it.
If Rekordbox was in this video I would choose Rekordbox.
We have separate Rekordbox videos.
I was undecided until it got to the price. LOL
Haha glad to help :)
If Andy C likes Traktor, I like Traktor
Cool :)
Exactly my thoughts to
Is djms9 plug and play ready for tracktor ??
Started djeng with 1200’s Technics no different in Serato just save u from carrying crates of vinyls. I don’t see any technological advancement compared to Traktor Dj2 which it has Bar Sync which I think Traktor Pro 3 doesn’t even have, I love that you can concentrate on creativity rather than trying to get the right beat sync which Serato and Traktor Pro 3 is missing from Traktor DJ 2.
Thanks for watching :)
Has anyone tried the AKAI AMX in TRAKTOR 3?
Does the DVS works properly?
Any latency or other problems?
Not tried it but it ought to work fine.
Great video Joe!
Thanks Andrea
Very clear explanation thanks!! ... going to traktor I think
Glad we could help :)
Can Traktor Pro 3 plug into a Pioneer DJM-S9 Mixer without having to map it or do you have to configure it to do so?
We've not tried it, but I suspect it will work "out of the box", no firmware upgrade required,.
Some people do indeed fond the four deck limiting in Traktor - have to say that personally, it's not something that's ever held me back.
Staying with Traktor
You didn't mention that Traktor still does not have flexible beatgrids. For me that is a huge reasenot not to use it. And I'm not even DJing music with live drumming. I play only 4/4 electronic music. But still, some songs I have change tempo and I really can't stand my beatgrid markers not aligning with the actual beats.
Agreed.
I am going to go with Traktor.
Enjoy!
Traktor Boi here.
Raise your hand ✋
👌
Traktor all day🙌🏾🙌🏾
Nice :)
Ty bro! Traktor it is 👍🏼
Stacked waveforms on Traktor would be nice
Definitely
Digital DJ Tips Actually they are there in the current version, it’s called parallel.
Sorry yeah misread your last comment - they added them in Traktor 3.1 :)
good comparison. Thanks!
I like the Traktor👌
Having used both, I think Serato are very lucky to be where they are. It’s the most expensive option and has the least software development. They are very slow to keep up with latest operating systems and just forget about it you’re looking to get an new M1 Apple product. They’ve barely kept up with the previous OS. The MIDI reassignment is hideous and restrictive. However, it does have stability on its side but other than that, I don’t get the hype.
I'd imagine hardware unlocks make up a large chunk of Serato users so the price isn't as relevant for them, they have awesome stability and brand loyalty from being around a long time
going with Native Instruments Traktor Pro 3
Cool! What swayed you?
Traktor is like a PC and Serato is like a Mac. Traktor is cheaper, more customizable, and full featured out of box; but is missing some of modern features (ie VJ). Serato is more stable, more pleasing UI, a lot of features; but is more expensive and getting everything dongle (addons) hell.
See your point, although "getting everything" isn't really "dongle hell" - it just costs more money.
I've been trying to compare and decide between these 2 softwares. But this is the 1st time(as far as I've seen), someone has said that Serato is more stable than Traktor
Clear as water ... thank you!!!!!!!
No problem!
Love Traktor pro 3 🎶🎶
Glad to hear it!
I heard this a long time ago, but I heard Traktor is better for EDM music and Serato is better for Hip-Hop. Is this still true?
Yes, or at least that's what they're popular for there is no problem with DJing Hip Hop on Traktor or EDM on Serato :)
Serato DJ Pro ist The King!😉
Yup, The Greatest after RB)
Traktor HANDS DOWN
TRAKTOR FOR LIFE, PERIOD!!!
Glad you're a fan :)
Traktor is the best . the input is normal, so output and mode option is the only one.
i just don’t get why is it so hard to simply play samples in traktor
Traktor's song sorting leaves a lot to be desired. There's no smart playlists, no way to bookmark two or more tracks that you find work well together and no tag system for sorting your music.
Yes there is smart playlists.. you do it through iTunes. Being able to do it in Serato & iTunes is redundant. That why traktor "doesn't" have it. You just got to know how to link up iTunes to traktor. Traktor users have been able to do this for a very long time, no one knows how to use it is all. It's one of many features that Serato picked up later even though traktor has had it for years ahead of time.
As far as the bookmarking part i find that a lot of djs write down there songs but its really inconvenient for a lot of people
We don't think it is redundant. Many DJs despise using iTunes, and want their DJ software library to be powerful. Rekordbox is a good example of DJ software library that is awesome. Compared to that, Traktor (and indeed Serato!) lag behind.
@@digitaldjtips good point
@@ricketycricket3242 You seem to take pride in a capability that you say Traktor considers redundant and not worth implementing in their own product. 'not a feature but a work-around requiring other software. Perhaps you can enlighten us on how it's done, on both Mac and PC?
Traktor now has stacked waveforms
Indeed!
No but it wouldn't be fair to use the worst case scenario with one software and not the other, the same is true for Traktor
As soon as Traktor adds video mixing I'm switching back to it from Serato.
Who knows when (if) that will happen is the big problem
Digital DJ Tips indeed. Chances are that it wont ever happen given the niche market for that application and the considerable developer resourcing to build and maintain that functionality.
Sadly I think you're probably right
Traktor forever 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Nice one Costa :)
Digital DJ Tips Thanks brother, Traktor never skips a beat. 🤩🤩
