    By the way, really great thing they added - this update essentially added track recommendation as well. It highlights the tracks that are in key in your library, which is the exact same algorithim that record box uses. Just thought I’d let everyone know. I really am happy with this update

    Nice to see that Traktor is finally catching up on what few other DJ software already does even more better. Color coding the compatible tracks is really neat. Does Traktor detect more than one key within the track? Often tracks are composed with a compatible set of keys using circle of fifth rule. Very few DJ software detect more than one key in the track.
    Another thing I would like to see is detecting the energy level of each segment within a track.
    The trick you showed about changing the pitch of one track completely and mixing in another track to pump up the beats is really neat. I didn't think of that before. Have to try that.
    Thanks for intro. 👍

    Really Interesting... You mentioned it in the video, and yes, if you dj and you have had a music background of any sort with any intrument, you will probably do this naturally anyhow with your mixes. It was quite funny to see as I loaded up some of mixes in my deck and looked at the keys they are in. The ones I looked at are either one up or down from each other!!
    When out and about listening to other dj's and can tell you the one's who have just jumped into it from the digital age as they miss that key ingredient. Alway tell newbies if you wanna dj, especially house or dance music, get your hand on some decks or vinyl at somepoint. You will learn all of this... Denis Tuchkov, you are spot on!

    A DJ/producer told me that changing the key is wrong because you're ruining the modulation of the track etc... Well obviously but the point is to make something sound good TOGETHER. What I like to do is bring in a new song to the same key as the one that's playing, and then 16 beats before the drop of the new track I change the key to normal.

  • @distortionpedal
    @distortionpedal 5 років тому +22

    I have only ever mixed in key. Being a musician back in the day you really notice djs who are out of key. Its almost hurts my brain. Or that could be because im a bit autistic. ? I love the colour coding. Its a dyslecsics kids dream. .. especially when not prepared.

    very nice and informative video. I like the fact that chris uses tracks that he actually plays in his set. The only problem for me that i see when using external mixing (like chris would do with his full setup): matching or adjacent keys will only be highlighted if the current deck is set to master. But with external mixing I use the master clock as the master.

  • @pentachronic
    @pentachronic Місяць тому

    This is great. You can now use music theory to match your keys. Very useful that NI put the numerical notation since is more important. Root key is not really that important but the relative kets are. Does the S/W indicate Major/Minor in the numerical mode and are the numerical modes automatically updated relative to the Master track ? For instance you may be looking to transition to a iii-m from your current I-Maj. It would be great to know what your B track being cued is relative to the current playing track. Would save a lot of theory headaches.

    Does this work with Mixed In Key result ? For exemple if I change the key of a 8A does it still show 8A or it show the new result in the Camelot system ?
    Cause I don't want to use the Traktor key detection system, not because it's less accurate (maybe it's better now) but because it's not logical like the MIK system where the different combinaison of key make more sence (like 8A with 4A, 5A/10A...). It's possible to do the same with Traktor system, but the number don't have this logical link (cause 4A/8A become 9m/1m, 5A/10A = 10m/3m... no mathematical logic here..)

    Any good DJ should be to make any mix work regardless of key
    Djs who mix with MT key lock only are limited as tracks sound better without it like it did in vinyl turntable days of DJing , you can do that here but basic vinyl turntables pitch skills by ear are needed

    • @DJActionVasquez
      @DJActionVasquez 5 років тому

      Yeah I agree. I've never mixed in key either. Mixing in key opens up new possibilities, but at the same times constrains you. I'll mix in key once in a while, either by mistake or on purpose, but the main thing as always is to rock the hits. In most high powered jams the crowd doesn't even care about that stuff.

    • @djimma5080
      @djimma5080 5 років тому +2

      @@DJActionVasquez the thing is you can do both if you just order your tracks differently , each track doesn't need to be the same key , imagine a keyboard and you press each key starting at the high note end and go down to the low notes , this sounds nice to ear , now imagine pressing each key once but randomly , some of it will sound ok some of might sound amazing but most of it will sound like shit because they keys your pressing consecutively don't complement each other well this is how music works and why it sounds nice , now imagine your own typical dj set that you play you can go random and it will be good people will dance etc but then you could play the exact same tunes but put them in an order where you start on the high notes tracks and move down then notes and you will fucking destroy that dance floor your set will start nice and light and it will just get deeper and darker once you understand this you can play around with it . I will say its not for every genre or style of djing if im spinning hip hop then i will link tracks by words and themes instead and tell stories , and if im genre bending then i forget about it , if im mixing dnb then its a must because i do alot of double drops and they just sound better in key , dubstep , trap not so much depends on track , any house genre or techno , trance , nu disco then its a must as these genres its more noticeable if your not in key .
      mixing in key can be the difference between being a professional dj and a superstar dj , in other words you dont need it but if you do then it might up your game a bit

    Can you change the key of any track without changing the tempo? Can you change it to _any_ key? Can you change a 8A (Camelot key system) to a 7B, for instance? Or maybe that's too drastic... how about changing a 5A to an 8B (both denoted by same piano key)?

    • @dobbatron
      @dobbatron 4 роки тому +1

      yes but sound quality will be affected by the stretching depending how far you go....try it and see

      Yes, that's the resulting key feature in Traktor. Virtual DJ has a slightly better more precise feature that actually goes to different keys in increments rather than decimal/numeric.

      I thought the same, but one you start playing a song and if it's the 'Master' all the 'Keys' become coloured. Try it out and let me know

    Will this "Resulting key" highlight resulting key tracks available for mixing (as I asked 10 years ago)?

    • @sapiotone
      @sapiotone 5 років тому

      @Florian Sarges Maybe I'm misunderstanding the functionality here, but... identifying available tracks according to the position of the pitch fader would enable
      - Quicker mixes (tracks listed in browser are matched/adjacent to key of currently playing if loaded immediately)
      - Browsing by pitch fader position (user increases/decreases pitch of selected (non-playing) deck and browser shows tracks accordingly)
      I guess this is what Mike's wanting? (if not, could you clarify +mikelo303 ... if it is... +1 here)

    • @dobbatron

      That really would be the logical step.....that I don't think they took. Absolutely right though, cut a line out of the equation.

    You might as well say that in a weird way, improvising becomes part of the mixing in tenpo. I was wondering if in the future features like stem morphing and ratio mixing will be available. I relate to a plugin called mmorph from meldaproductions. Features like that will create new sounds an scapes and mixing techniques never heard before. Will that be possible in the future?
