Wonderful teacher!!!!!! I have learned SOOOOO MUCH FROM YOU!! And we don't want to forget hubby for his great filming! May God Always Bless you and yours!
I want to be Rose Red when I grow up! I mean seriously she knows how to do everything! And she’s so cheerful and her personality is so bright. I bet she lights up every room she walks into! Love love love you Rose Red! Thanks for teaching us so many wonderful things!
I feel the same way. I think the secret to her success in that is that when she doesn’t know something, she know it - and she looks it up from a reputable source!
So it appears that dehydrating pumpkin takes a bit of work, but the return on the investment is a very dense powder that will go a long way in the end. LOL, now I've got visions of pumpkin-spice cake dancing through my head!
My husband took a heavy stainless steel serving spoon and sharpened the sides like a knife. It works wonderfully, and I keep it with my canning supplies.
Pam, last month I cut, cubed & canned a 15 lb pumpkin from my garden. Due to age & arthritis, just the cutting, cubing & peeling took me all day. And a week of pain. Today, I took another 14 lb pumpkin off the vine. I decided to put the whole pumpkin, stem & all, into my 23 quart Presto. Steam canned for 10 minutes. What a wrist, hand, arm saver, as well as time saver. I cut, peeled, and grated the pumpkin up for the dehydrator (thanks for the grating tip), as well as cleaned the kitchen, all in 1 1/2 hours. I am sure different sizes and types of courgettes will need different times. but 10 minutes worked perfectly for my 14 pounder. I can highly recommend this work saver tip!
In the spring my garden was flooded and the vines almost died. My pumpkins are about the same size as the ones you have. In the past I have struggled with trying to cut and scrape and chop them to make pies and bread. This year I figured out if I use a 1 or 2 inch paddle bit and drill a hole in each end place it in the microwave for 8 to 10 minutes when it comes out it is soft and easy to peel and the seeds are easier to scrape out. With an exit for steam to escape there is no chance of a pumpkin explosion in the microwave. Lol Its faster and less stress on hands and wrist I can process more back to back. Hope this helps everyone who dislikes cutting up pumpkins in the fall as much as I dislike it. Love all your blogs ,thank you for sharing. Rebecca
Great techniques here. I used the T-shape peeler and it's great! Much better than using a knife! The canning jar lid worked perfectly as a scraper! Pumpkin powder for tomorrow's pumpkin spice pancakes and it really didn't take much time at all. Thank you for another very helpful video.
You're very close to 100k. I'm excited for you! I don't have a dehydrator or freeze dryer but I still love watching you. Maybe I'll have to check in to getting one.
I found a barely used dehydrator at the thrift store for $13. It works great and I'm so happy I started. I've been making herb and spice powders and preserving extra food from the garden. Best of luck you find one soon!
You can use a multi purpose appliance. We were gift a glass air fyer. Has the heating element in the top. I can squeeze 4/11 inch rounds. It takes a bit of monitoring as the timer only works 1 hrs. The excess liquid condenses on sides & bottom. It was a good start in experimentation. I was very successful with citrus. And powder the rinds was excellent. I will use the powder added to hot tea & vanilla cake etc. With all unknown future I thought it best to embrace all possibilities. I've done a 10 inch pumpkin. Cleaned & roughly chopped. Leaving skin on. The air frying process on low was successful. I peeled the out rind for pumpkin powder. The rest I made a delicious pumpkin soup that was extremely tasty and Healthy.
Once you have a dehydrator, there's no turning back. Food preservation using one is so easy and very satisfying. Builds prep pantries quickly. If you only dehydrate one pound of food a day, you would have the equivalent of 365 pounds of food in a year which is shelf stable using a fraction of shelf space. if stored correctly, dehyd. food Good luck to you.
I just discovered you about two weeks ago. I am so delighted of your knowledge. I'm almost 60 and it is refreshing to see you share your knowledge. I've been a professional in the food industry for 32 years , I have the utmost respect for what you are doing. Thank you
I'm really enjoying the food storage powder series Mrs. Pam. I didn't know you could make pumpkin powder this way. Dehydrating compared to freeze drying yields way less but either ways works. I don't have a deydrator or freeze dryer so I guess I'll just use my oven. Thanks again Mrs. Pam for sharing this with us. 🙂
The methods used, dehydrating vs freeze dried, produce different volumes, from the same weight of pumpkin. So it's not "less" from dehydrating, as it's the same amount of pumpkin, but a smaller dried volume.
Aren't both these machines fun? I reconstitute the exact way you do with the dehydrated powder. What amazes me is the little space this powder takes up vs. pumpkin in jars or tin cans. I'll take the powder any day!! Thank you for the great content! Waiting on the next video!
I’m bedridden for at least four months due to a car accident (I’ll be fine.) I’m two months into the recovery. I have one of the new Breville Pro ovens with four dehydrator trays. I can’t wait to try some of the things on your channel once I’m back in the kitchen. These posts are sooo informative and fun. 🌟👍🌟
Thank you so much for this video! I wasn't able to grow pumpkins this year, but I'm hoping I can get pumpkins on sale after the first of November. I want to dehydrate some pumpkin and you showed up just in time! I am really looking forward to the upcoming video of using the pumpkin powder. Many blessings!
The small ones are grown for presence shells and flavor. The jac olantern is for Shell. hybrid d don't grow next year. Get 1 small organic , and save seed.
I like the way the dehydrated reconstituted better than the freeze dried. It's just looks better here in the video. Love the reduced storage space as well. 😁👍🏻
Pam, score your pumpkin for the freeze dryer to make it more manageable. Just use that square scraper to smooth it out then score/divide each tray. I do the same thing with Yams, pumpkin or any purée squash. Wait till you try FD Yams, they are delicious even as a snack in chunks. I personally like the powders for storage and reconstituting. Great video.
Do you have a website or presentation that you do on the internet like Pam does? Do you prefer the freeze-drying to the regular dehydrator? And if so, which one? I'm trying to decide it's so expensive to do either one. I learned just recently that the brand new convection oven I bought for myself for my birthday has a dehydrator function! And I'm nervous to use it
Thank you for this! My family is looking into getting a freeze dryer and I wanted some nice tutorials to watch to get a grasp of how to process these foods. I LOVE that you added the dehydrator method as well! We purchased a large one and now I can test that method first to see if I will use the powder :D I'm excited to see how you bake with it!
Thanks! You’re always coming up with something fabulous! I love how scientific and detailed you are with everything you do. It builds confidence in your viewers that they can trust you and they can repeat the process and have similar results. This may be our answer to the canning dilemma. It will store in much less space. I’m excited to see your surprise!
This is a great idea. I've seen this in some dehydrator cookbooks and I was on the fence, but this looks so easy. I have some squash roasting today but will give this a go. Thaks!
You just amaze me with your analytical mind!!! I love how well you explain things & I look forward to seeing the next video on how to use this stuff. 🎃
I actually started dehydrating pumpkins! My grinder should be here tomorrow. Which is a manual one. I didn't steam mine, I cut it and peeled my pumpkins diced and rinsed then just put in my dehydrate, but I don't have the sheets for my dehydrate for puree.
I was at Sprout's Market last week and happened to see the produce manager setting out the last of the pie pumpkins in the produce department. He offered them at the screaming price of 2 pumpkins for $1. I snapped up 6 of them and cannot wait to dehydrate them! I'll be using your method. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting pumpkin powder on my radar!
You talked me into freeze drying some pumpkins! I love what you did. My husband adores pumpkin pie, so I can talk him into helping me. Here is my question: If you have freeze dried eggs, how much of the freeze dried egg powder and water do you add to make it like a fresh egg/pumpkin pie? Would you have a recipe developed for freeze dried pumpkin pie with freeze dried eggs? I can see this going into you & your sister Cindy’s new book! I would love that and I bet everyone would too. Thank you for this video. Again, as always, I learned so much. Next question: would you do a video on pumpkin seeds? My mom and grandmother never had fresh pumpkins at all. I’m clueless. 🧡
I just separate the seeds (give the stringy stuff to any kind of bird or compost) rinse seeds & springle whatever seasonings you like while they are wet. I taste them- then pop them into a cooler over like 225 or 300 for as long as it takes to get them crispy. I find making them real crispy ensures the outer seed hull is as edible as the inner seed.
I will be inheriting 3 large pumpkins after the great day and will be dehydrating. I can see that I will have my work cut out for me but you have made look easy so thank you. I just happened upon this video and wondered why I didn't get notification. You're such a good teacher.
I’m very anxious to see your next video and to see what you use the powder to do. I only have a dehydrator but have quite a few big pumpkins from my sons garden. So we would have to dehydrate. Great video! You’re a trooper.
I'm so glad you made this video. I have several pumpkins, two of which are my favorite Cinderella pumpkins, to process. I love the deep orange flesh of the Cinderellas. And...I just gifted my self with the grater attachment for my old Kitchen Aid, so I'm all set. I love the space savings of powders. The canning lid hack is brilliant. Makes me want to hit my forehead with the heel of my hand and say, "I coulda had a V-8!" Love the internet. Love the sharing.
Just a thought: After the pumpkin has been peeled and seeds removed, weigh the pumpkin and devide that weight by 8, and that will be the dried weight in the dehydrator when completed. So weigh the pumpkin, weigh the dehydrator without the pumpkin, so you know how much your dehydrator weight is empty and add the dehydrator weight and dry pumpkin weight and when you think the drying time is good, simply weigh the dehydrator with the pumpkin inside it and you will know when it's dry enough.
I've only ever used pumpkin from a can and then only on holidays. I'm the pie maker of the family. Thank you for all the great recipes and ideas. I'll be planting pumpkins on the levee out back of my apartment next season. Thank you and Jim for all your hard work.
I did 18 eggs in my dehydrator a week ago. I got a pint of powder and I was so pleased. My grocery store ran out of eggs which is unimaginable in the United States. Getting 5 dozen on Saturday. I love your channel, thanks for sharing how to do this.
Your description of “the math” helps me immensely! I am planning on freeze drying my Hubbard squash in the next day or so! Now I’ll know the math, can’t wait for your recipes
This was a wonderful year in northern Ohio for pumpkins. I canned mine and left a few to eat fresh. We are blessed to have cooler climate that allows us to keep pumpkins whole till about January. Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy them and have learned so much.
Just had to come back and make a comment. I took pie pumpkin while set in my instant pot with 1 cup water on steam for 15 mins, let cool. Sliced easy then. Used canning lid to seed and then peeler for skin after I sliced in 1" slices. Worked like a charm. So much less to clean up and less hands on. Dehydrating now then I'll powder
I have winter squash waiting on my counter to be canned and now dehydrated! I'm very excited..thankyou Dr. Pam! Great video and info. Can't wait for your collective cookbook by you and your lovely sister.
I’m trying to decide if I want to buy a freeze drier and these videos where you do both techniques are amazingly helpful with that decision. thanks so much!
I don’t have one either. Not sold on Amazon because supposedly they had too many complaints. I did research and saw that Harvest Right has many BBB problems. There are YT videos of people troubleshooting all sorts of issues.
I processed 2 15 lb Cinderella pumpkins yesterday for the first time. I just froze my pumpkin in 2 cup increments for baking. I still have some canned pumpkin on the shelf from last year that I think I'll freeze dry since yours turned out okay. I can put that away in mylar bags for long term storage. I'm grateful to have your videos to know it's safe to process in the freeze drier.
I am looking forward to your recipes, I just did a couple pumpkins yesterday. I baked them and threw the meat in the vitamix and dehydrator. 16 cups made about a little more than half a pint jar lol.
Fun fact: Libby's canned pumpkin is actually a Butternut Squash variety. I use Butternut squash for pies as they are so much easier to process. My uncle worked at the canning plant in Morton Illinois.
I use a magic bullet for making my powders. its a high rpm motor and it makes a very fine powder. its smaller container and easier to pull powders from the cups. Thank you for this video, This is the method I am going to use to dehydrate some pumpkins.
I love to make powders also, and the room I save by not canning, not to mention saving on lids! These powders work also for baby food purees and in homemade dog biscuits. Also, just a thought. Pumkin and squash are in the same family. Squash makes great "pumpkin" pie! It can also be dehydtated the same way, so if you can't find a pie pumpkin...
just got my harvest right freezer dryer it took quite awhile. will start drying my produce from my organic garden and apple trees, squash, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes. i've been canning for years so i canned and dehydrated all the soft produce this summer, i will be able to freeze dry tomatoes and peppers and such next summer. i've been making kale and other greens into powder after dehydrating. really enjoy your vids. and find them very helpful, thanks
Had thought about this. would be great to have on the shelf for a quick night meal or really wanted a little pumpkin somethng. Thank you for the re hydrating Ratios.
Hi Pam! I absolutely loved watching your video today and can't wait to dehydrate some pumpkin powder too for future uses, especially lattes LOL thank you so much! Can't wait to see what surprise you have for us all too!!!!!
I have heard that freeze dried pumpkin pie “bites” are also delicious! Place the puréed and spiced pumpkin into either trays with small square inserts or silicone molds with small cavities. Some people add whipped cream on top or graham cracker crumbs on the bottom or both. Canning lid trick is GENIUS!
Oh, how I wish I could be across from your back yard...my dogs LOVE pumpkin and squash skins. They eat them all...no waste when I cook either one...they would love to visit you. Once the 31st is over, I'm going to visit a local farmer to get some of the pumpkins and squash he cooks...delicious produce. Thank you for sharing this video. Blessings!
Perfect timing on this video! I don’t have a freeze dryer yet, but several dehydrators. I also have about 2 dozen or mire homegrown pumpkins sitting in the barn, waiting for me to figure out what to do with them…LOL.
Wonderful teacher!!!!!! I have learned SOOOOO MUCH FROM YOU!! And we don't want to forget hubby for his great filming!

This is awesome for people that make their own baby food. I was constantly puréeing everything.
Yes, it is perfect for that. Wish I had thought of that 40 years ago when my children were babies!
This is GREAT!!! I will be dehydrating as many pumpkins that I could get my hands on. LOL!!! Thanks for sharing.
Can we just use a dehydrator if we don't have a freeze dryer? Never mind. I should have waited to complete the video! Thank you, Miss pam!
Yes, I have dried pumpkin in a dehydrator. Tastes great in coffee!
@@crimsondryad,Coffee? How? Like a sweetener?
@@IsabellaM._ Like flavoring. Think of it kinda like chai. Pumpkin with some pie spice, milk, and honey or sugar
@@crimsondryad ,Oh,I see! Thanks 😊

Been waiting for this pumpkin video
Thanks for all the info
Thanks! You’re always coming up with something fabulous! I love how scientific and detailed you are with everything you do. It builds confidence in your viewers that they can trust you and they can repeat the process and have similar results. This may be our answer to the canning dilemma. It will store in much less space. I LOVE your attention to detail!! You are the sweetest! Thanks for this great video! (I have pumpkin in my dehydrator right now!)
I'm going to try that with my garden full of butternut squash when my freeze dryer gets here. Great demonstration.
Thank you.
I love pumpkin things.
Wow, thank you!
I actually started dehydrating pumpkins! My grinder should be here tomorrow. Which is a manual one. I didn't steam mine, I cut it and peeled my pumpkins diced and rinsed then just put in my dehydrate, but I don't have the sheets for my dehydrate for puree.

Wow--right place at the right time! That is fantastic!
Miss Pam, excellent video and thank you for showing how you calculate reconstitution.
Interesting to use the grater. I cooked pie pumpkins whole in the instapot and then dehydrated the puree
Oh good because I have already pureed my pumpkin and was wondering if I could put it in the dehydrator...

Love how you find the best procedure for everyone!!!! You're the best!!!
I tried using the canning lid today. It works AWESOME!
WooHoo!
I am looking forward to your recipes, I just did a couple pumpkins yesterday. I baked them and threw the meat in the vitamix and dehydrator. 16 cups made about a little more than half a pint jar lol.
I had a jelly jar... One powdered chicken breast filled only half of it up. Lol.

Also LOVE THE GREEN SHIRT..it's very pretty..
I bet my hens would enjoy the dried pumpkin shreds
Thanks Rose for sharing the Dehydrating process and freeze drying!
Thanks for the lesson, stay safe blessings
Thank you for showing how to do this with a dehydrator as well.
Great informative video, lovely 🎃 🎃. Looking forward to seeing the journey 🎃🎃 Thanks for sharing 👍😎
Another great video 💕✌️🌱
Looking forward to the recipes and the surprise! Thank you for all that you do! 😊💕
Another helpful video! Thanks
Wonderful. Do you think this would work with squash? I have grown lots. I'm going to try it. Many thanks.
Excellent! I just got some pumpkins now I have a plan on what to do with them for storage. ☺️
just got my harvest right freezer dryer it took quite awhile. will start drying my produce from my organic garden and apple trees, squash, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes. i've been canning for years so i canned and dehydrated all the soft produce this summer, i will be able to freeze dry tomatoes and peppers and such next summer. i've been making kale and other greens into powder after dehydrating. really enjoy your vids. and find them very helpful, thanks
Sounds great!
Thanks for sharing! Your videos are very valuable and I like the way you compare the freeze dried to the dehydrated.
AWESOME! thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for the pumpkin info. I'm dehydrating them for the first time
Dr. Pam I enjoy your videos so very much! Please keep on teaching. You truly are the best!!! Hugs!
Thank you so much!
Had thought about this. would be great to have on the shelf for a quick night meal or really wanted a little pumpkin somethng. Thank you for the re hydrating Ratios.
A silicone spatula works excellent in gathering the remains.
Hi Pam! I absolutely loved watching your video today and can't wait to dehydrate some pumpkin powder too for future uses, especially lattes LOL thank you so much! Can't wait to see what surprise you have for us all too!!!!!
WOW, what a great channel!! I just found you today. I LOVE that you do not 'over explain' details to death...Thank you for that...
Thanks for finding us, and welcome!
I have that attachment I would never have thought about that. Thank you
I have heard that freeze dried pumpkin pie “bites” are also delicious! Place the puréed and spiced pumpkin into either trays with small square inserts or silicone molds with small cavities. Some people add whipped cream on top or graham cracker crumbs on the bottom or both. Canning lid trick is GENIUS!
Sounds interesting
Very young pumpkins can be cooked and eaten just like squash. The young leaves are also edible as greens with some preparation.
roasting the pumpkin in the oven gives a depth of flavor too
Happy to see this tonight. Some of our dogs have tummy issues so I was wanting to try this. Great presentation.
Glad it was helpful!
Blessings!
Sounds great!
That is great information! Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to the recipe video using the dehydrated pumpkin powder.
This is awesome! What a great way to store pumpkin!
Please make a recipe book on using powdered veggies.
I just love all the powder videos! I'm trying to make as many as I'm able, going for nutrient dense foods.
I may be looking for a dehydrator soon. Looking forward to seeing what you do next!
I am learning much from you!! I love preserving food. Thank you so much
Gwen: You are so welcome. Jim
Perfect timing on this video! I don’t have a freeze dryer yet, but several dehydrators. I also have about 2 dozen or mire homegrown pumpkins sitting in the barn, waiting for me to figure out what to do with them…LOL.
That is awesome!
We're going to do this tomorrow. Thanks!
I started using a cookie/meatball scooper to clean out anything with seeds like pumpkins. It works great.
Great idea!
Fascinating!
WOW ! Love your videos. Keep them coming.
So many wonderful tips in this video. Thank you.
