Have you ever thought about making a 'History of Magic' series? I don't mean Magic the card game per-say, but rather the History of Magic's story lines and what not. It'd be a legitimate history lesson from the Professor lol You could make a video for each set as they come out, and then in the time between sets, you could work up from the start to catch up with present day. I'd be super excited and enthusiastic for this.

    Hi Professor,
I just wanted to let you know that a few months ago, this video placed me on a path that would change my life in a way that means a lot to me. I didn't have many friends and was pretty isolated - the bulk of my human contact was either from MMOs or superficial work-related interaction. However, one of those co-workers that I vibe with brought her decks in to work one day and I immediately recognized the game of my childhood that was always a little bit over my head. I was immediately hooked after taking a look at the actual cards again, seeing how far the game had come.
I am a big fan of Fantasy and Sci-Fi in general, so it was easy to go home and delve deep in to the MTG universe and lore. I realized that I had no cards anymore and no idea where to start. I did a quick UA-cam search on the best way to rectify this situation and found this video. Not only did you make (another) an instant fan of me from this video, but it I followed the advice contained within and here I am now: with a fledgling collection and a few friends I've met at my LGS. I went to the prerelease last night and pulled a Ulamog! I was unable to cast him, but I even won a few games. I continue to draft and grow my collection, always trying to improve my constructed decks. The dance of brewing and testing is never ending and always a bunch of fun.
I wanted to take the time to thank you (and the other awesome content creators on UA-cam) for all you've given to the MTG community and the part you've played in getting new people connected with the passionate veterans that drive this whole thing. I'm in a much better place with this hobby of mine that keeps me constantly curious, intellectually stimulated, and even connected to my local community.

So what ended up happening at my high school, a professor who loves Magic decides to give out a huge part of his collection of cards because the card took up half of his office space, which causes the whole school to go into a Magic frenzy, especially the guys, because anyone could build a deck completely free. Of course, the professor still keeps the more valuable cards, but even so, I see about 20 or so games a weekday in this 300 student campus, and a whole lot more on the weekends. This made me decide that I should get back into Magic (because I loved the online game when I played ages ago) and build my first physical deck. We are even deciding to host a tournament in the next few weeks that all the players on campus will join. (probably going to be casual or modern)

So i started mtg 3 months ago following this guide. Nothing more, nothing less. Today i put my first standard deck together from everything i picked up along the way. Had a blast doing this and found it more fun and rewarding than buying individual cards or cracking additional packs. Saved a bunch of cash too. Cheers prof this is by far your best video.

Yeah, this guy seems to be a real authority on this game, and culture. I knew only several seconds into watching a video of him he's the real deal and only wants everyone to enjoy this game. It's always nice when people are willing to devote themselves to a culture they love and cultivate its growth by helping it grow and aiding new comers without a big personal ulterior motive. Even the name Tolarian Community College speaks volumes.

OK, my first goal has to be finding an affordable Games Store in the countryside of Southeast Brazil. Wish me luck. I can't remember having ever seen one; actually I never saw a Magic deck in person, though I've heard they exist in Portuguese.
EDIT: I showed up for Friday Night Magic at my LGS I just found and had a blast. Lots have changed since this video, but the community is still amazing and I'm now a proud Selesnya Commander player.

It's kinda funny. A few friends recently got into mtg. I was sceptical, but after multiple requests from one when we were at the mall I bought an intro deck and received a booster pack also from the friend. He got me hooked, not only for the gameplay, but for the atmosphere the fanbase has. What really surprised me was a old friend of mine who moved across town got into it a few weeks prior. We we're both surprised at the fortunate coincidence. It gave us a another topic to talk about, we met at hobbytown the next day not only to hang out but to play, with me being his first human opponent. Thanks for your videos, I'm definitely subscribing.

I just got into Magic a month ago and I really wish I had seen the videos on this channel. I ended up buying 5 different Fat Packs, a set of 5 Intro Decks, some 2013 Holiday Boxes and a Deck Builder box. I did manage to sell some of the Intro Packs and Holiday Boxes to my friends, but I feel the few hundred I spent could have been spent in a far better way. At least I can now spread the wisdom I have with others. Thank you for this video, and continue making the great videos that you do.

I don't often comment on youtube videos, but I wanted to thank you for all your videos, they're helpful and you can tell how much time and effort you put into them. I took your advice and bought MTG2014 on Steam, and I've been having a lot of fun playing through the campaign and I actually went last night and bought a clash deck to play with my girlfriend (I think you brought up good points on why it may not be the best money spent, but I don't mind dropping $20 and I don't know anyone that plays). I've gotten really into card games in the past year, I started playing Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars LCG, and I love it, but not many people in my area are interested. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

I am here over a whole year ago when I started getting back into MTG (started in Theros, took break, came back on Dragons of Tarkir) and see this guide in a whole new light. I think that this video should have many, many disclaimers as to who this guide is meant for. This guide is optimum for the player who has a stable income of money and maybe even exclusively someone out of high school and is willing to frequent an LGS and play standard.
This guide is NOT for the kitchen table player who wants to learn to play with family or friends from school. I can see how this intimidates new players into thinking it too complicated. Playing sealed, leagues, and buying a video game for a card game??? I remember feeling bummed out because i KNEW my mother wouldn't let me stay for FNM in junior high, much less the community take me seriously. I personally don't discourage new players from buying intro decks if they have fun with them, despite me knowing better. Perhaps you should create a new video in which you have a guide for the new CASUAL player, in which you discuss, is it better to buy a Deckbuilder's Toolkit or a Duel Deck for your needs? THAT is what my high school friends need and so do a ton of people in the comments apparently.

Got all 5 of the new quick-start decks to learn with my partner (unfortunately had to pay for them since I couldn't find them in any LGS's). Thank you so much for these videos. I'm preparing for getting into the physical card game in time for the Khans pre-release. I've been so nostalgic for playing TCG's lately, recalling the glory days of Pokemon and DBZ TCG league back around 2000. Hearthstone has been fun, but it does not replace the in-person element that I'm craving.
I've been playing DotP 2015 on PC. Since I'm already in progress, I'm going to finish it, but I might have to check out 2014 too since there seems to be so much negativity on 2015 (my biggest issue being the atrocious menus, not necessarily the gameplay).
I found this channel early this week when I was looking for opinions on the best ways to start out. I have found your videos to be, far and away, the best beginners' resource on this game. I would not have approached the game in this way if I were to go on my own devices, and I feel like what I've learned will save me a lot of money and headache.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more videos from you on MtG.

I'm 23 years old. My only experience up until a few days ago with Magic was watching older cousins play it when I was a kid, and a handful of 2v2 matches my wife and I played against a pair of friends who had enough cards to just hand us decks and teach us the game. Based on my pokemon collection and interest in TCG, one of those friends took me to the local hobby shop and showed me a lot of people playing Magic together. It looked fantastic, a real local league with people having a great time and as we left he bought me one of the newer, standard-legal decks; a pleasant surprise.
That was only a few days ago and I've already acquired over 300 cards since then and have begun constructing decks. I'm fortunate enough to have a neighbor who's a veteran Magic player, too and he played me in my first 1v1 match that I actually managed to win! I then lost the next two matches, but I'm utterly hooked now.
I've done nothing but read and learn about this game. It's fantastic!
I just wanted to share and say thank you for the quality information; this game is something I'm eager to sink my teeth into. I've wanted to for years and now I'm rallying together friends who used to play and organizing a casual Magic night this week, I have about 6 players prepared to attend and I'm so super excited to learn more.
    THIS GAME IS SO COOL!!!

    • @ChaostheClown

R1k0Ch3T In my defense [and maybe to my detriment?] I bought a 'deck-builder's tool-kit' just so I had stuff to play around with and cards to learn off of.
Coming from pokemon, seeing that many cards for only $20 was just too hard to pass up. I'm taking this video's advice going forward though. Draft seems like an awesome way to play.

Well I don't myself know recursion... *wince* But aggro basically is lots of small creatures and hitting fast and hard. Control is not letting your opponent do anything with counterspells and boardwipes like supreme verdict. Milling came from an m14 card called the millstone that put cards directly from a player's deck into the graveyard. It's just milling now. And tokens are decks that overrun the board with tokens by playing spells and creatures that produce tokens in large quantities.

Professor... I bought two plainswakler decks, Ashiok's and Chandra's... they came with two booster packs. My little brother and I are getting to know the game bit by bit... looking up rules and mechanics as we play. Not fully sure how counters work and so on. It's been such a fun way to bond. Thanks for everything. Love the way you approach MTG.

I used to play quite a lot as a kid in the 90's, so I was pretty familiar with the mechanics. Recently got into mtg again with a group of friends, bought commander decks and now we play commander or draft. We do buy a lot of boosters but we always play them out as drafts. In addition I picked up 80 Basic lands from my local store for like 3,5€, and now I'm just building up decks through the drafts + reinforcing my commander deck. I do also buy some individual cards but never anything expensive(0,1-0,4€). Casual fun, no intention of going to official tournaments or anything. Mtg is just so much fun :)

My girlfriend's friends play and, while she doesn't play much, I've convinced her and now we're going to start making decks together soon and I can imagine we'll be testing them out on each other soon... it's gonna be fun. Wife and I just started playing a week ago. For us we both tried the Magic Duels game on ios to see if we liked it. Then we got two intro decks to play each other which was allot better. So we went to store and bought everything we needed to protect cards and purchased two zendikar booster boxes and a zendikar fat pack. The fat pack the wife is storing to see if it goes up in value and holy smokes playing Pack Wars against each other is a ton of fun. And we are learning allot doing it that way too! We already know we will always have a booster box on our counter now just to battle each other. Everyone tells us buying singles is your best bang for your buck but for us booster boxes is a amazing route to take with your spouse because each time you fight the battle is going to be very different.

    • @RaCUtricolor
      @RaCUtricolor 8 років тому

Keep in mind that whenever someone says that singles is they way to go, they are most likely talking about, is competitive play. What you play is mostly considered as "Casual".

+Ekalis Team Yes forget this video and play Magic Duels until your hands bleed then when you know what kind of decks you like and most of the rules buy singles from other players and not from shops. Either online or in real life just be sure to check pricelists to not get ripped off. Buying anything from shops is a bad deal unless you enter some competition and think your chances are good at winning - which they wont be for a long time.

I'm sure Magic is great, but building a good deck is kinda expensive. The hobby eats up a lot of money. Perhaps for kids, coz they don't always have the money to buy the new set, tabletop rpgs which only require dice and a rulebook would be a better idea.

Unlike some useless trolls in the comment section, I will try to answer your question. I hope you understand what standard and modern basically are: two formats in which you can build decks out of any cards you have from certain sets, in standard they keep switching out keeping it interesting but expensive, while modern will save you money in the long run, but the kinds of decks you will see won't change much.
A league, most commonly hosted in comic book stores or with friends sometimes is a bit different. If you enter say your LGS's league, you will be playing by standard rules BUT, you can only make decks out of cards you buy or get from booster packs within the store. You cannot add cards of your own into the league pool to keep things balanced. Also, the way this works is, if you are hanging out in your LGS and find someone who is also in the league, you can just play anytime and they keep track of your record. Sure, it is maybe a very profitable way for shops to sell like crazy, but also more manageable if you can't be attending FNM as much as you would like to.

    • @ShynyMagikarp
      @ShynyMagikarp 8 років тому

Hey thanks for your reply! So how does the LGS keep track of which cards the people have packed and what not? Do I keep my cards at the store or something? Otherwise, couldn't someone theoretically buy a single they really want and then just tell them that they packed it in the store?

Nice Guide, I especially like that you said Duels 2014 instead of 2015.
I personally just attended my first Draft (tripple M15) last Friday and I got 4th and got 5 packs.
But one thing that I think actually helped me the most was the Deckbuilders Toolkit as a Sealed Pool, I built 40 Card Decks with my brother and some friends out of the cards and it seemed there was at least a hint for any color combination, so I got a grip on what I like and which cards I do want to take and which are duds in Draft. but that's just my experience, I just bought the Toolkit and played 2014 and 15 and was able to walk away with 5 packs, but then again I am definitely no stranger to card games.

Thanks so much for this and your other videos! It's cleared things up immensely for me. I played a couple games of Magic many, many years ago, but never got into it. Just impulse picked up 2 intro decks (yikes, I know now; I was going off Tom Vasel's recommendation on a Dice Tower video) of Khans of Tarkir, and really didn't understand how they fit in with other sets. I just figured I'd use them to start playing with my wife (hopefully). I found your channel after not getting terribly far reading official WOTC stuff (one blog post from them was particularly baffling). Wish I found you first! I'll be watching your casual player next, though I'd like to get into leagues and such at some point. Sounds like I would have been better off picking up a bunch of booster packs, but hey, live and learn.

I wish my local store was like that. The competition at mine is super cut throat; feels like playing at an LCS at times unless you're drafting.

    To Tolarian Community College,
I do not know if this is a commonly sold option, but, what I did to get back into MTG was to buy Commons/Uncommons Playsets for a whole set (price roughly $30), which was plenty of cards for 9 interesting decks, two of which I gave to friends to also get them back into it.

I just want to play online but have no experience at all! I bought the game Witcher 3 and love playing Gwent within the game. Someone suggested the game you are talking about Magic the gathering! Where is a good learning video that you might offer as a place to start. I thank you in advance.

This video is awesome! Thank you so much for the tips. I am looking to get into MTG, as I am older and not really on a budget, I was just to go out and buy deck builder tool kits, fatpacks, as well as a booster box. However, watching this I believe I have changed my mind. I already purchased the newest Magic game, at this time its Magic Duels for XBOX One and its free. I am getting there and thank you for the knowledge this video and the others I have watched have provided.

I'm lucky that I had experience playing another TCG before I started playing Magic, but if you don't have that then it really can be hard to find a place to start.

I have a couple questions that I hope you guys or Tolarian Community College could please answer:
    1. Building a league deck, with only 6 booster packs? How would one get mana into his/her deck, and how would one have enough mana to cast all the different types of cards that come in all of those booster packs?
    2. How old should one be to attend a Magic: The Gathering event? Wouldn't it be weird for a child to play a man in his 20's? I'm not saying I am a child, but I mean, I wouldn't think a parent would want to see their child play someone way over his age level that will most likely have blue hair, tattoos, earrings, and a pierced nose.
If you took the time to answer these questions, thank you! :D
And thank you, Tolarian Community College for this wonderful video! I've been watching them for a few days and I'm a beginner of MTG and I love your videos! Keep it up! :D

RedtedflatROBLOX I would say 14-16 is a great age to start playing. I even recommend people starting in their 16s. Since, im 16 myself and have learned a lot of the game. I almost got 3-0 in a pre-release. but went 2-1 because in my first match in the last ga,e lost to 1 life, but, it was so tense and epic that around us were like 6-8 people watching the game like if it was Pats vs. Seahawks. Good thing, i as playing a rather old person ( I think he was like 30 or something) which seemed weird considering the "random kid" is giving him a hard time. Also, about the league deck, the stores "lends" you land so you can make the deck, but everyone justs takes the land for themselves (lol).

I started playing at card stores when I was 10, 3 years later, and I'm still the only one with dyed hair. Most teens and adults from the stores I go to are nice to both children, and newcomers to the game, and if anyone is mean to each other, then they get banned from the store. The "blue hair, tattoos, earrings, and a pierced nose" stereotype you have is pretty inaccurate, if you ask me. As for the mana, the store you play at usually supplies it.

I love this! I really like your "Is it worth it?" videos but they seem too focused on the card's values. I agree that those are important points, but you have such a great way of organizing your thoughts and such an easy to listen to and understandable speaking voice that it just seemed a shame that you weren't doing more things like this. I agree with some of the other posters... it would be great to hear more of this for beginners (I didn't know you could get free 30 card packs for newbies) and more of just "normal" reviews, not based solely on card value.
Great video and great information for beginners!! Keep up the great work!

Honestly, I really do not regret both the Twisted Reality and Concerted Effort Intro packs being in my collection, then again, I got 2 "gideon, ally of zendikar" and a couple annihilators in the booster packs that came with it.

I went to my first game/tournament at my local store today and I went to modern with a standard deck, bad idea xD I went 0-3 and I had to leave early, but I'm going to FNM and the people there were amazing and so nice and even gave me tips on how to play and a couple of cards to improve my deck with, I was a little scared to go today, but I had a whole ton of fun and I encourage everybody to go to their local store and just have fun and learn :)
