"Anytime you go looking for Scott, when you find him he's got like cameras on him, he's got his hand out "Well personally I believe..allow me to postulate on my thoughts concerning myself and others around me"
bob said let me get the fiddle then came back with God's fiddle
Hilarious!
One of my favorite things about TAB is how genuine and inclusive they are with their fans. Not only do we get to hear the finished product, but we get to see the creative process behind it. Thank you Crackerfarm for bringing this to us!
God this is so good. This is what I imagine when I think about how Avett songs come to be. It would be awesome to hear a sort of 'sessions' album where the album is full of just the first run of recordings. No post work and minimal mastering, just unadulterated jamming. Awesome work on capturing the magic for the fans!
totally agree, this is the best video on youtube
a sessions album would be so coool
Or what they did with magpie and the carpenter and release demos
I agree! Except I’d rather see a sessions documentary type of thing where you can really see and hear how they make their magic
Amazing what "Bitchin Banjo" turned into - my favorite new song. Keep 'em coming boyz.
This is fantastic - I love seeing how these guys work together. I will say just Scott + banjo is my favorite iteration of this song. It's so spare and haunting and bluesy. Bad ass, indeed.
Love seeing how things flesh out. It's very fascinating to me how they work out an idea. Thank you for sharing it with us!
I love how Seth takes off to write the rest of the song. He believed so much in what Scott presented him
Just bought true sadness last night and I've been listening to it all morning~ AHHHHMAZING ☺️👍🏼
Watching the creative process is so fun. These guys are so talented.
We are all ready for that full length doc Mike. This was amazing.
SO ready!!!
spotify, its out.
Documentary.
ohh my b. ya that would be tight
Documentary
So thankful that you record these behind the scenes moments to share with all of us. Amazing song too... I love this version AND the album version! Avetts rock!
This is one of my favorite songs off the album! It gets me pumped up singing!!
Fuck they should have left it like this on the album, So frustrating cause it IS so good. God damnit
Very sick, live versions of this song always makes my day! Nice moment of Candidness!
WOW, freak'n WOW!!!! Stripped down version is awesome! Album version is awesome!! Mind BLOWN!!!!
Thank you VERY MUCH for sharing this with all of us, crackerfarm. I appreciate all that you do.
Why have I only seen this now, this is so cool, it's like what they did with "I wish I was" in the documentary
HOLY SHIT THIS ORIGINAL VERSION WAS AWESOME!!!! I NEED THIS FULL VERSION LIKE I NEED AIR!!!!
"just for the sake of us having fun I am going to get the fiddle" haha I love this
This is so Raw, I Love it! This is an eye into the process of writing and laying it down, so thanks for the reinforcement...separate note, I'd say perfect response up above- the subjectivity of Art may be what makes its products some times as transcending and evocative as this song/version/video brings onto me. It feels like one of those recordings/songs that means something different each time you revisit it. And I'll be a frequent guest here! Peace.
how special to be able to see the moments that they first came up with this song and began developing it
This is fantastic. I love seeing how these guys work. I will say that just Scott plus banjo is my favorite iteration of this - it's so spare and haunting and bluesy.
These guys just keep impressing me. So cool to see how their minds work.
Love this video, one of my favorite Avett songs. As for the discussion on the Album version, It's their music and I don't think they let anyone else decide how they think it should sound. I almost never listen to any of the studio versions of songs, the Dead taught me the best way to experience what musicians have to say is to watch them play live. Might be the most transcendent version of a song you ever heard or they forget all the words and laugh at themselves. The Avett's just kill it in their shows and that is all I need to know.
Amazing. Thanks for capturing this.
I love how Seth pokes fun at Scott 😉
Fantastic! True talent. I'd watch the hell out of an Avett documentary btw
This was awesome. Thanks so much for sharing!
how incredible to get to watch the process of them coming up with the song
Wish this didn't happen to be over produced on the album
what a great song to bomb on late night tv. so humbling. lol
Walken might say more cowbell...
I say more stomp, or tap.
You guys rock.
I love just hearing these guys play these songs... sounds so amazing without all the synthetic (for lack of a better word) bullshit that rubin seems to be adding to the new record.
I was thrown at first, but then I was thinking, in The Devil Went Down to Georgia, the Devil's riff kicked ASS.. so when I hear the the "Devil's Riff" in this one, I recognized that it provides the right amount of discomfort that the Devil SHOULD produce (I assume). It's friggin art I tell you. I'll let you all know how it goes down at Red Rocks..WOO HOOOOOOOO JULYYYY!!
I love it I love it I love it...I would give anything to be in that room! so amazing...
I love seeing your process!
My favorite video yet! (Other then the one you made of me). Already picking it on my banjo!
More of this!! Everything about it.
I love this so much
Unreal!!!! Another vote on a documentary!!!
love love love
"bitchin' banjo riff"
This is so awesome
Very nice storytelling.
More behind the scene snippets like this, you know, wouldn't suck. ;)
Oh, hey, Seth is lefthanded!
this is spiritual
Oh goodness, Good shtuff boys!!
This is awesome. I would've much rather heard this version with just the strings than the studio version.
"That's gonna be badass, right Mike?"
God please, release the demos of these songs. The three piece at the end that is the soul of this song. Just press it!!!!!
Badass
the album version is incredible. It's sad people fail to realize it
+Trevor Bolliger I still don't like it
BanjoBandit I like both. The album version is powerful with the fiddle playing right at the beginning. But I love to see the raw unpolished side of the brothers that we only seem to get on UA-cam or live these days
Also known as "the making of a Grammy"
Wouldn't miss it for the world. Thanks fer noticin' Josh! :D
+Josh Turner , It's good to see YOU here. Your cover of Offering was the first time that I had ever heard of the Avett Brothers.. I wish I could repay you for how much that one cover changed my life haha. Glad to see your still keeping up with the boys :) Would love to know your thoughts on the new record.
@crackerfarm did you shoot this in like early 2014?
I loved the trad Banjo lick! I really enjoyed seeing how this song came to be, but unfortunately they slid over to the dark side with the synth sound. Ironically enough the banjo lick that inspired this song and video didn't make the finished cut.
i respectfully disagree with the tone of the comments here. I understand that a lot of people love the avetts because of their traditional style and...simple is not the right word, but not overly produced studio recordings. with that being said, in the context of the entire record, this song works perfectly. yes, it is more produced than usual, but it is phenomenal that way. let them cut loose a little. a little intensity every now and then never hurt anyone.
I do love this. But, as a veteran of reality television, I'm going to ask: Was Bob *actually* just in the bathroom when he just so happened to overhear what Scott and Seth were cooking up? Seemed just a little bit like a set piece. Or a re-created actual event.
In any event: Fun.
Sounds like you been listening to Phillip Roebuck! The man of the one man band!
There's banjo in this song?
I guess you haven't seen it live
+BanjoBandit I was being sarcastic
anyone got an I.D on these boots?
Rick Rubin absolutely BUTCHERED the production of this song
as per usual
I agree. I can't say too much about Rubin because he really has been quite successful. However, he really doesn't seem to understand the genre/simplicity/vibe that altogether IS The Avett Brothers. Everyone needs to hear the live version IN PERSON. It makes a heck of a difference.
+Carter Jenkins you nailed it. It's strange because Rubin is known for his simplistic production style, but he does the opposite when working with the avetts.
If they hated the final cut, they wouldn't have used it. They are doing what they want. Follow them or don't, but don't hate on them. They put a lot of effort into writing, recording, AND performing. Plus, both versions are awesome.
+Piper Lee I'm not saying they weren't happy with their record. I'm only saying that I don't believe what is on the album is their real vision for the song. The real thing is what we've seen live.
Too bad this song got ruined with all those synths when they recorded it
same. hate it on the record even tho its my favorite song
I like the duality. The album version is heavily produced and very "digital" while the live version is very real and "traditional." I think that duality makes hearing it live all that much better. Besides, you can't really capture their stage presence in a studio.
I would remind you of the incredible live version on Live, Vol. 3, the intensity of which, by the way, would be impossible to accurately and honestly replicate in a studio recording.
It's awesome both ways, man. Gotta have an open mind.
Exactly what I was going to say!!!!!!! You took the words right out of my mouth. Last time they payed it right was in Asheville nc. Halloween, plus they changed the words it's a complete disaster of a great song. I'm a produce and who ever recorded this shit with them didn't help them at all the whole new album is mediocre at best from the rest of their work.
love the song, love the band, but this could have at least pretended to be less staged. "what was that? sounded great. I d in the bathroom. just for fun, let me get my fiddle". Read like a script from How I Met Your Mother.
You can't fake realism. Maybe I'm wrong, but the question of realism never crossed my mind until recent albums.. Just saying.
this is only showing my obsession for them but if they staged this they've been holding on for it a long time considering Seth is rocking pig tails in this video which was a while ago lol
+MrTmlalways they've been working on the album for 3 years according to interviews.
+eatnosenuggets I know which is why I'm saying it'd be weird if it was staged only to release the video 3 years later.
+MrTmlalways Not really. Its plenty of time to polish a piece of marketing to promote an album.
This is promoting video...like fake lol
Oh goodness, Good shtuff boys!!
