  • Are you wondering if your potential hydro-power site is feasible ?
    In this video, we will be covering all the techniques and formulas we need to determine measure if the head (height difference) and flow of a river are suitable for a vortex turbine, and we will also teach you how to apply these values in order to calculate the amount of power you will be able to generate.
    You can use these timecodes to easily navigate through the video :
    0:00 Introduction & Formula
    2:40 Head (height difference) measurment
    9:08 Flow measurment
    15:13 Efficiency factor
    16:45 Available power calculation

    Really exciting stuff here. Doing some research to see if I would be able to bring hydropower to my home and neighbors!

    Excellent videos, great job 👏. I am now big fan of vortex hydropower . Maybe we will install one or more of this in Bosnia😊.

    You can also use an ordinary (long) garden garden hosepipe together with short pieces of transparent piping attached to each end (in order to observe the water levels). Simply anchor one end of the hosepipe to the water head / high location and the other end of the hosepipe at the tail / low location. But at the tail / low end you must anchor the hosepipe as high as possible, approximately just above the estimated height of the head / high end. Then simply fill the hosepipe with water at the head / high end until it is full of water (you will be able to see the level through the short transparent piping). Then go to the tail / low end and adjust it vertically until you can clearly see the level of the water in the transparent piping. Measure the height of the water level at the tail / low end to the ground and that will be your water drop height

    @rivers with low gradient: Couldnt you rotate the turbine by 90 degrees (like the rotor of a ship) and use it that way?

    • @TurbulentHydro
      @TurbulentHydro  3 роки тому

      Probably by using only the rotor but producing less power

    Hello, looks great.
    If a measurements of the site are well suitable for hydropower, will you be able to bring a turbine for my site?

    Hi , Thank you for sharing. Very interesting! Could you please, help me for more details on how to measure head (height difference) in for example a river with a very small slope or downstream, and in rivers with some small waterfalls or canal falls?
    It was not so clear to me. Could you share more details please on how to measure it? Thank you in advance!

      Eles fizeram um sistema desses cá em Portugal. Seria interessante saber diretamente do cliente que tipo de licenças eles tiveram que pedir, seja câmara, pareceres, etc, para começar um projeto destes

    When getting results (let's say 10kW). Does this mean the turbine produces 10kW each hour or is that the daily output?
    Thank you for answering in advance.

    so is height difference measured from the sides of the river or from the bottom of the river?

    • @TurbulentHydro
      @TurbulentHydro  3 роки тому +1

      The height difference is measured from the upstream river surface to the downstream river surface.

  • @sanandakumara

    This "10kw" of power in the exemple is for second? Hour?

    • @harry356
      @harry356 4 роки тому +6

      10 kW is an energy flow. If the turbine produces 10 kW for the duration of one hour, you'll have 10 kilo Watt hour or 10 kWh.

    • @ThisRandomUsername
      @ThisRandomUsername 3 роки тому

      As others have said, power is the rate you get energy/do work. If you're using 10kW, you'll have used 20kWh of energy after 2 hours. If a solar panel collects 500W for 5 hours a day, it will produce 2,5kWh per day.

    What if you took a water tight container and put a smartphone or bicycle GPS recording device inside of it, then you simply just press record and then throw it into the river?

    daisy chain as many turbines that will fit down any canal system... same flow used over and over and over before it gets to the farmers fields... Poof, the towns all up and down stream all supply their own power.... citizens just pay for maintenance.
