It also felt like a week too late. It’s like “ok, we know what’s happening… oh, it’s a repeat”. It should have been a 2 parter where they gave us both episodes and completely destroyed CrunchyRoll’s servers.
Gear 5th is something that grows on you over time but I think my favorite part is not only the cartoony powers but also that the powers can affect EVERYTHING I was choking on laughter when I saw Law’s eyes pop out of his head but the lower half of his face remained stoic. The juxtaposition to the world is what I love the most
We also got used to Goku going ultra instinct, then not going “full ultra instinct” then Krillan probably dies (Krillan dying triggers all of Goku’s power ups) and he gets “true ultra instinct”. So that was annoying, but yeah, it’s ultra instinct. All it took was dying like 5 times.
I liked Luffy's Gear 5th since day 1 because of a few things: 1) Making Luffy a Rubberhose Cartoon is brilliant when you remember Oda's inspiration for the Gum-Gum powers was "I wanted my Main Character to fight in a Silly Way." 2) It retroactively makes Gear 4th have more sense because it was never rubber powers but rather cartoon powers, and cartoons change their look rather often. 3) IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW how Luffy always recovers so quickly, he is a goddamn Zoan DF user! and Zoan's recovery speed is busted!
I agree with no 3....Not just ordinary Zoan but a Mythical one, and to top all of that, it's God tier with the power of Imagination. So, other than the fast recovery speed, maybe Luffy imagine he can heal fast helps in that too
No, it's not cartoon powers. I genuinely don't know how half of the fandom seems to have this misunderstanding. Luffy's power is still having a rubber body. The awakening just lets him control it freely. Gear 4th was abusing his rubber body to force himself into a different form, but gear 5 is his natural transformation using the fruit for what it's supposed to be.
@@Spiffo0 It is still rubber based, but crafting goggles out of thin air/his hair isn't rubber based. So we'll just have to wait and see more of what gear 5 can do.
The day G5 happened in the Manga I was still anime only, and I was caught up. My friend who got me into OP demanded that I read the Manga to catch up before it got spoiled to me and I'm very glad that I did. Its crazy how even 16 months later finally seeing it animated has the same impact as when I first read it.
There's a theory that the reason Katakuri chose not to keep fighting Luffy at Wholecake Island and just fell on his back is that he'd looked into the future and saw what would happen if he killed Luffy, saw Luffy turning white and using him as a jump rope and thought "nope I'm not having any of that"
In my opinion Gear Fifth is an absolute metatextual triumph. There's a line when he first awakens where Luffy says something to the effect of 'I feel like I can do anything,' which is almost like Oda speaking directly to the reader. Luffy and Oda both achieved the highest level of freedom with Gear Fifth. It is said to have the power to put smiles on peoples faces and I for one grin ear to ear every time I see Gear Fifth in action. One Piece truly is a Laugh Tale.
That is the real genius behind gear 5 not the goofy op powers. The way it feels like something new, almost retconed for some bit at the same time luffy has always been someone that put smile on faces while fighting and be liberating individual and nations since day 1. All come in full circle, allowing the author and luffy to be free from any norms or restrictions
I actually really liked how they portrayed Kaido's response to defeating Luffy. He isn't happy about the way that he won, he seemingly gets angry and decides to immediately take that anger out on anyone left. Also Oda confirmed that gear 5 was greatly inspired by Tom & Jerry.
I think the personality change of Luffy in gear 5th can best be compared to the personality change of Goku in Super Saiyan. Goku just becomes more true to his saiyan heritage, and likewise Luffy just becomes more true to his own personality's instincts in face of all the freedom he experiences.
And here I was, literally JUST thinking about how Luffy's first Gear 5 transformation will unfortunately still be remembered as his "Super Saiyan Moment"... But you know what? I think, given time, it will actually be remembered as the moment that changed the game, so to speak. Great to see another video from ya Tekking, I was starting to feel a little bitter lol
Luffy def had his Super Saiyan moment here but this will not change the concept of transformations because: 1. Luffy activated after death (may play a role in copycat animes) 2. Luffy acts too carefree the practical opposite end of other famous transformations 3. Oda made his transformation too consulted that I do not foresee other shonen trying to imitate it when they can stick with the tried and true “train, get stronger, transform.”
I initially didn't like gear 5th in the manga that much. But from what I've seen so far this form was MADE for the anime. And then actually hearing the drums of liberation on the soundtrack is amazing.
I think the death/rebirth metaphor is something specific to the Gum Gum fruit. I imagine most devil fruit users just train their bodies to unlock the power, but Luffy unlocked his early because of the severe adrenaline shock of a near death experience. The literal interpretation of the drums of liberation being his heart going into overdrive trying to keep his body alive, pumping his blood even harder like an advanced version of what Gear 2 did.
What if Luffy looking old after G5 is ACTUALLY HOW HE LOOKS without his DF abilities. What if in those moments his DF is completely turned off. Once his DF restarts his skin is rubber again and regains its youthful look. Luffy has used his life span a bunch of times for different reasons and Oda hasn't addressed the ramifications at all. Maybe he's already shown us the consequences of using up life force.
I love this theory.. but it would be really bad for Luffy if it were true. There's so much One Piece left, so many big fights, and he looked so old. He very likely will use more abilities that burn his life span in those future fights, so... Law's gonna need to come in clutch with the Immortality Surgery... either that, or Luffy is gonna look like Brook soon.
I would say that gear 5 is also a culmination of the freedom he has given throughout the different journeys. Luffy has freed not only his crew(most of them), but the people in the islands and the friends they made on the way. For him to give the whole world joy, he must be the one with pure joy. The way Oda makes fans wonder and theorize is so joyous!
Far out there theory: Carrot teaches Luffy how to pace himself in Gear Fifth. Sulong is a power that turns the user Pure White, and it Kills the user if it goes on for too long. Luffy even first transformed into Gear Fifth under the Full Moon, and calls out Pedro straight afterwards.
If anyone is unaware, the next release of the One Piece TCG is getting a Gear 5th card with the highest rarity. It's a legitimately beautiful card Also I think a great "What if?" video could be What if Kaido won? Changes up soooo much about what's happening in the story now - Cross Guild is the only group that wouldn't be affected in anyway I can think of

G5 was my favorite thing to see, seeing Luffy bounce around and get cartoony which was something that made me smile it fit him to a T in how that form works and I do agree that G5 is gonna be great to see in the anime
Have you noticed these details from the preview for 1071? Luffy's shadow stretches for no reason in particular and the sash in Luffy's Wano costume is purple, gomu gomu fruit purple. Its a nice little touch Edit: If Luffy really is able to stretch his shadow in G5, he probably won't be affected by Moriah's fruit the same way anymore.
I LOVE that its simulateonously super op, while also clearly not outclassing prior villains. I can still imagine Akainu and Kizaru being big threats against this form of luffy
I do believe that oda has once stated that luffy is using his devil fruit the correct way, like he’s using it the same way the previous user did. As for the method for awakening devil fruits I think their entire personality must align perfectly with the original desire that created the devil fruit to begin with, if vegapunks theory is correct that is.
I love G5 because Oda the mad lad managed to create something that checks some of the most popular fan theories of what his power-up will be - and yet he manages to not only make it it's own thing and and as far as I know unique in anime.
Seems like it's an unspoken rule about transformations that your final form is more sleak and simple. Prior forms can go crazy, making characters into big monsters or whatever but the final form just looks like them with a small change.
I think the idea of the Hito Hito no mi model: Nika needing people to return from death in order to awaken the ability makes sense. The whole fruit is about freedom and I think in order to awaken the freedom fruit you need to be free from everything including the idea that death is the end Also: I'm not sure if this is true but I read somewhere that there is going to be a new opening starting from next episode in the anime as well as an ending which hasn't been in one piece for about a decade
I kinda like to think that Kaido’s quote about awakening a Devil fruit is about having your Mind and Body catch up to the power in your SOUL. And Devil Fruits are, atleast we think, connected to a person’s soul. So when they die, they finally become dis-connected, or perhaps even stay a part of it who knows. But the idea that Luffy’s soul is so strong that it took most of his life of training, fighting a Yonko, and DYING to give his body a chance to get strong enough to handle the awakening is pretty sick. I like to think that Luffy didn’t HAVE to die, but it was like a shortcut. Like, eventually, he would have his heart beat the Drums of Liberation eventually. But by dying, his soul basically forces his body to come back by beating his heart, which just so happens to be to the rhythm of the Drums of Liberation.
Nice thought... But I think it could be slightly different... We know or asume that zoan df have a litteral will of their own... So the power/soul has to be somehow sentient... Ruffys fruit specifically avoided the WG for centuries and ended up with Ruffy... A boy who wants nothing more than freedom... And thats exactly what Nika is all about... So the df is with the very best person it can be... My opinion is that the still remaining fruits soul/spirit actively helped Ruffy to reach this point in order to stay where it thought it belongs

The fruits spirit didnt need to help him because Ruffy had others around him figering things out... In addition Ruffy surounded himself with quite important individuals... Vivi a decendant of Lili, Robbin who can read Porneglyphs, Franky with the blueprints of a counterweapon to Pluton, shirahoshi the reincarnation of Poseidon, Momo who can talk to zounisha (part of Pluton maybe)... And therefore the spirit helped Ruffy to take this last step because it sees a chance for a better outcome when it stays where it is
Something in the anime scene makes me think its not the death that was the catalyst, but it was nakama (Otama and Nami highlighted in the episode) holding on to their belief in him, and doubling down on the thought that he'll return.
to go further on the whole "Zoans have a spirit inside them that can influence their wielder but Luffy's is just weird" I took part of what the Gorosei said about how the fruit always evades them and how it's own will has some... specific quirks, is that is doesn't really influence its wielder like that (aside from just cranking the dial on luffy until it breaks off). Instead, the whole thing with the fruit is it does all it can to pick wielders who match the character of the fruit. the fruit doesn't need to influence Luffy because he's basically already a perfect match. it just makes him more Luffy.
i honestly think Luffy’s base form feels just as free now as gear 5 as far as how he feels and his personality. Remember when he showed Bonney the form and when he got mad about there being no food, he temporarily hit a g5 pose in both of those instances. i think the fun part is just his constant state atp
Gear 5th was Great! Loved it when it was revealed. Style was good, waaaay better than Gear 4. Only thing I think could be better is to foreshadow it better. Maybe introduce The myth of Nikka at the impel down arc, sky island arc or something. Not just hinted at some fights before Luffy turns Gear 5.
IMO Gear 5 requiring death makes alot of sense, he is now the most free being ever, free of everything including the shackles and chains of life and death

The part you spoke of with Death being a factor for devil fruit awakwnings or the Nika fruit awakenings, would that have anything to do with why they introduced Kaido as a man seeking a way to die even though we've all seen the meme of 'the ocean is right there, Devil Fruit User'
That's what I believe It's why we've never heard about the absolute top tiers like Big Mom or Kaido being Awakened because they've not faced something capable of pushing them to the near death state required to Awaken
I love Luffy's sun nika form it is so cool probably my favorite form ever from Luffy. Gear fifth is different than all the others forms because Luffy has white sea anemone hair with white shorts and he looks more pale too. so cool I cannot wait for the next episode when Luffy turns his entire environment into rubber. Kind of like King Midas with the golden touch where everything he touched turned to gold. And turned Kaido into rubber from the inside and used him as a jump rope so funny. I also like Kaido's drunken phases that he goes through because he is heavy on drinking which is so funny. So all and all I am excited for future episodes great animation.
At 11:08 when he was talking about how Luffy had to die to awaken his fruit it really got me thinking about this. I mean, the only devil fruit that I would have expected to awaken with your death would have been the phoenix fruit. I mean, the legend is literally that it would ignite itself and from the ashes either an egg or a new Phoenix would arise. That’s literally the only story about it actually.
I think that Zoan awakenings have a time or power limit that you can use. Such as (spoilers ahead) after the fight with Lucci, he was tired out. And when he and Lucci teamed up, they didn’t use their awakenings. Luffy used gear 4 and Lucci just used his hybrid mode.
I think it’s just an issue of stamina… Gear 5th is still incredibly taxing on Luffy and will be for a long time, and Lucci might be in the same boat given that he awakened his DF within the past couple years as well.
When it comes to gear 5ths design I think it looks fine but am still very confused about why it changes his color, also dont like the retcon of it being turned into a mythical god zoan.
I'm hoping that its revealed that Robin's Demonio is in fact her Awakening, or at least part of it, and she and Luffy get a chance to use their Awakenings together. I would love that. I don't think Awakenings all need a near-death experience to happen. I don't really see Katakuri as ever having had one. I think the user just needs to face a certain amount of duress, perhaps different for each fruit.
It's funny that you'd use the word "ecstasy" to describe his mood because the main psychoactive drug in ecstasy called MDMA expends so much serotonin that your reserves are completely drained within a couple days of usage. When you start to come down from the drug you get so disappointed because you just wanna feel that way forever, so it's normal that people binge it for a couple of days in a row, but then the drug stops having any effect on them because they run out of serotonin. If they completely spend their serotonin then it's normal to get a few days of depression and low energy afterwards because of serotonin deficiency. Luffy's after-effects of Gear 5 match up with the expected neurochemistry of what would happen if you spend that much serotonin (and adrenaline), it's not completely fictional. It doesn't really reduce your lifespan though, it just feels shitty while you recover. You'd have to take a lot of MDMA very often for the neurotoxic effects to cause any irreversible damage.
I think that luffy had to awaken his fruit by dying because he would never really give his mind up to anything, so the devil fruit kind of did take over for a bit of the fight but I feel like luffy started gaining control later on in the fight.
One could say that luffy does have a devil inside of him, the devil fruit as it was said by Vegapunk is the embodiment of ones dreams manifested. And from what the Gorousei said once talking about the nika fruit: It was elluding them for hundreds of years, almost like it has a mind of its own. Luffy is the one in control, but I see the Nika fruit as having it's own mind, it's just so in sync with luffy that it isn't really noticed. That along with having to die, is the reason joyboy returned.
The way you described the whole power up in other stories reminds me that this might’ve all started or at least one of the earliest ones that inspired the ones you mentioned is Devilman, story premise is Akira Fudo being possessed by a demon but maintaining his sense of self unlike most other people, most iterations all there is to it is grappling with the new instincts and aggressive tendencies, others would have the demon actually be conscious and be fighting against Akira (and then the odd one out where the demon took Akira’s place and basically got pacified by his surroundings and love wanting to protect Akira’s friends and family). One can find a lot of parallels to the other examples especially with Akira being portrayed as a good person possibly one of the sweetest good willed person around (which is why he was the candidate for demon possession by his friend who learned of and tried to find a way to fight back choosing devil power to fight devils). Just a normal kid taking in the supernatural to fight the supernatural
Wano was my first start to finish arc reading the manga weekly, so i was definitely feeling it drag on by the time gear 5 was about to happen, but i was blown away by how much it fits his character especially since this probably wasnt heavily thought out back when oda begun one piece aside from the general idea. But im a huge fan of how Oda subverted the 'inner demon' trope with shounen protagonist surprise power ups. Although, now that we know that luffy has a zoan devil fruit, that might mean that he will stop fighting using his gears, and start transforming from his hybrid/base form into the full Nika transformation since the gears are shortening his life and also gear 5 can do all of the expandy stretchy stuff without having to blow into his body
It recontextualizes everything, every moment when a villain said "rubber doesn't suppose to do that!" now it makes sense. It always was the cartoon cartoon fruit.
What I like about gear 5th is the fandoms reaction; everyone loves how cartoonish it is, how it fits Luffy and the themes of One Piece unlike when everyone liked snake man because it was more serious and badass compared to bounce man. Really shows what you come to the series for.
I think most are just appreciating the novelty. It just happened. People did the same with Gear 4 then after a while started dumping on it. Snakeman has usually been overwhelmingly received in a positive light. Time will tell if G5 does the same because it’s taking a huge risk by incorporating a toon like theme that works well in manga but see if it can translate just as well in anime.
Maybe that's exactly how the OG Joy Boy died, he wasn't killed, he was just using that form so much, he just dropped at the battlefield and passed away And that's why history remembered him as Joy Boy, because he literally died with joy on his face
Recently went to a ln anime convention last weekend and sat in on a panel with some of the English VA's and the first thing they asked before it started was "did you hear the drums?" I'm very hyped to see the episode when it airs!
8:55 I adore the idea of Nika being within Luffy's mind the whole time though, living again through him and hoping that one day, he could really meet all of Luffy's friends- to him, *his* friends- in the flesh.
My thought is that there’s two ways to awaken a DF: Luffy’s way, through insane training and a near-death shock to his system; or Katakuri’s way, through multiple decades of more controlled training that allows him to eventually skip the near-death experience. Alternatively, the Hito Hito no Mi Model Nika, being a mythical Zoan, might not be able to awaken without the near-death experience no matter how long the user trains, explaining why it hasn’t been awakened in 800 years.
i believe the shift in personality would be similar to the additional "bloodlust" that carnivorous Zoan users get, still Luffy, just "liberated" I also think that Luffys awakening may be special compared to other fruits, since gear 5th needed his heart to have a unique beat having his heart stop would have been a important moment for luffy to awaken it.
Just a thought that popped in my mind about Luffy enjoying the excitement and exhuberance Gear 5th provides him: Let us not forget that, after getting separated from his crew and landing on Amazon Lily, Luffy's first idea to handle his sadness was to consume "happy mushrooms", something he apparently used to do as a kid. So yeah, Luffy is no stranger to artificially altering his mood and seems to rather enjoy that kinda stuff. Maybe worth keeping in mind for later, that could be a potential pitfall he'll have to navigate.
Man is luffy gonna have a drug addiction arc? Maybe at least a mini arc aboard the sunny between islands, like luffy keeps using gear 5 just because its so fun to do, and the crew get mad at him and tell him to knock it off
10:20 At first I was afraid that this power would imply that Luffy's progress was just because he got a powerful devil fruit but I think Oda did a great job at keeping it consistent with the whole "df is as good as the user's imagination" theme (quite literally with Luffy lmao). The only reason that Luffy even got to a point where he could harness the full power of his fruit was because he was so well-fitted for it already and used it in ingenious ways, it isn't just an automatic win button. If any other person with a different mindset had eaten the fruit I don't think it would've done much else than what Luffy's base form did.
Here’s something that people tend to overlook: To awaken a fruit is to have one’s body, mind and soul be in sync with it so the personality within the soul of Nika is by extension already similar to what Luffy is.

The point about Luffy dying. Perhaps the meaning behind the fruit is that when he dies, he is no longer shackled by the limits of being a living thing. Just a thought
I don't think you have to die to awaken (for example Katakuri, I doubt he's ever been near death unless Big Mom slapped him around once before Luffy arrived xD). I think Luffy just happened to be lucky, like if he'd died earlier on in the series he'd be dead, but cus he was just reaching the point of awakening as he died and because he's made of rubber he was able to restart his own heart by pumping it with his power and pure will unconciously.
I agree with your sentiment. To say that death is required would only be head Canon unless confirmed. The main statement for awakening was by kaido (body and mind reaching the potential to reach new peaks). All the training that luffy undertook made his body do just that as he was reaching new peaks during the fight. Then, by the end, as he said, "This is my peak, gear 5th." His death may have been the catalyst like maybe his body force a resuscitation through the very will of th devil fruit. Who knows. But I personally don't like the idea of death being a requirement.
I'm with you, it feels like a "different" Luffy but also you can tell it's still him... it's like an adrenaline rush or overstimulation rather than rage or possession 🤔
A cool thing of Gear 5 is the if something serious had to luffy like someone he cares about be hurt/killed is the he might be able to have a more shonen transformation bc he can fight however he want.🤔 I’m happy that it’s different but could be possible 😀
Actually, I still feel iffy about Franky's post timeskip design. It has been like 12 years, and it still doesn't sit right for me. Mostly because he doesn't really live up to his design. He got bigger for him to mostly just sit in a mech suit. I honestly can't really think of a single time where his actual new body did anything to his power. I feel everything he has done could also have been done pre timeskip. At the very least this should show that nothing he has done has been very memorable, besides his fight with Senor Pink, but that's just because it was against Senor Pink. I also feel he became more mellow and nicer.
13:50 - this is why you're my favorite OP content creator Tekking. You just get what OP is supposed to be about. Luffy is the embodiment of Joy and Freedom and acceptance (hence why his crew is made up of misfits) I always see people arguing and hating on certain decisions or aspects of one piece while claiming to be fans of it.. but to me, while they be fans, they're missing the entire point of the series. We're supposed to be getting along and allowing one piece to bring us together, not debate about the live action or whether g5 was the correct choice. Who cares? The story is awesome and our boy is about to whoop an emperor in the anime 😁 lets go!!
I never was big fan of Luffy, but I liked the implication that his power awoke because he died, as in, he was not afraid of life, and this love for freedom is what awaken his powers.

the only thing that made me feel iffy on gear 5 wasnt the transformation but the fruit. I think the story would have been more impactful if luffy became pirate king with just rubber powers from the gomu gomu no mi, a fruit that people dont really think should belong to a main character. now that luffy has a hito hito no mi model nika i just hope that oda doesnt go down the "chosen one" path for luffy, it would make all of his feats so far feel lack luster because hes somehow the chosen god now and all of his victories are just because of the plot. but whatever oda wants to do with it i fully trust him because at the end of the day this is my fav manga and it wont change any time soon.
I think he is only capable of awakening Joyboy *because* he is who he is so it works for me. The gorosei said others have had the fruit but no one's been capable of awakening it

I don't know why but my brain just imagined Luffy wrapping himself up, grabbing onto a nearby pole or something and then just spins himself fast letting go! Dude just becoming a straight up Beyblade! 😂 Gum gum Beyblade! 😂🤣 It's Luffy so it is possible! 😅
1:31 could be a good idea as a side series after one piece ends with multiple arcs showing what would happen and how each villain would lead their life after they defeated luffy and how the world would differ to the original timeline, name “one piece timelines”
About the devil fruit wills thing, I believe it’s more about compatibility that actual will. My current theory is to awaken a fruit you need to embody the fruit’s power. Doflamingo was a manipulator, a puppet master, he always pulled the strings behind the scenes. His personality lent himself well to a string based devil fruit. Mochi symbolizes sustenance and nobility due to being very filling which melds well with katakuri was a bit of a glutton and always presented himself as a “noble” or perfect being. The wills in a devil fruit are more so what the power symbolizes and if you sync well with your power it awakens. Only those whoms characteristics match the criteria will awaken which could be misconstrued as a form of will.
The resin thing was a nice theory. However, it is actually hilarious, because I had a theory that Luffy was either a Special Paramecia or a Mythical Zoan before he awakened. It was around the time the assault on Onigashima started. I thought he was a Special Paramecia in the same vein as Katakuri. Then I thought that it might be a Mythical Zoan because: Monkey D Luffy, wants to become King of the Pirates, Monkey.. King 🤔🤔. 😳🤦🏽♂️. How'd I not see it 🤦🏽♂️? In the end, it isn't completely like Sun Wukon; however it has its similarities.
Speaking of which, a Vtuber who is Japanese and live in Japan (Fubuki) somehow managed to avoid spoilers all the way up until the Gear 5 trailer, but she was still excited to see how it would unfold, and in a way was more excited for it.

I went back to watch the clip where she talked about it, and it does imply she has seen Gear 5th or "that White Luffy" before, but I am not sure. She had no idea about the next arc though, which she was also talking about (watch?v=KvE6sj9eg5w). While she doesn't mention the trailer, this clip is from 6 days ago, so she likely found out through the teaser trailer.
I think it's just luffy dying that awakens his fruit or that other fruits would awaken like this. The way i see it each fruit awakens differently, it requires the user to fully embody the fruit in essence and power, in the nika nika's case it would be embodying freedom and fighting for it to the point of putting ur life on the line with no regret and genuinely having fun while doing it. So when luffy fights his whole life with all the ideals bring truly represented and actually dies, showing how big his resolve is, specifically to kaido, a massively strong and freedom-threatning foe, he awakens. I dont think if he died in the barrel he would have awakened right there u know
What if Joyboy lost not because the WG beat him, but because they fought for so long and he kept on shortening his lifespan that he knew he was going to die and they were going to lose because of it (that's why he had the time to write the apology letter and plan out the poneglyphs, look at Roger, he knew he was going to die and he did the stuff he wanted to before he died)
I like to think that Luffy will have a hybrid form - that isn't more powerful than gear fifth, but that Luffy will see like 'Okay. I need to be careful about this' and will use a form that is not as strong as Fifth, but that he can be better than fourth And I think I have seen this in a fair lot of media, I just don't remember where. But, basically, I think that Luffy will find a way to stay in that form longer, but in a weaker version of it
Gear 5th is just Luffy but high. Most of the badass transformations in Shonen are a result of rage (Goku's first SSJ transformation, Gon's rampage). Luffy loves fighting. He may enter fights in a rage (Arlong, Lucci) but that isn't what drives him, it is the desire to free people from despair and the sheer love of the battle.. Gear 5th is the perfect embodiment of his desires and his unwavering commitment to that (Gon's transformation worked because it was a jarring departure from the character we knew and was short lived. It would take a lot to justify it as a permanent upgrade). It's because there is no departure for Luffy and he has had to work at it that Gear 5th easily surpasses its contemporaries.
Ever think that the reason we never hear luffys inner monologue is because there is a joy boy in there and that is why he was so easily able to identify what was going on with blackbeard and his split persona but to confirm that to early would ruin a story point.
Not a manga, but DC Comics Final Crisis has something like that with the shattering of time messing with the structure of the comics. If you like DC, highly recommend. Possibly my favorite crisis event (incredibly unpopular opinion) just based on how much of it is really commentary on the direction of the industry at the time.

Luffy awakening his power through death reminded me of Yusuke's Mazoku awakening (the OG Vasto Lorde). Not to mention the fact that both powers have unusual heartbeats as a result. Funny enough, Gear 5th is more honoring to the legacy of Walt Disney than Disney right now😂
I think it was less so that he had to die and more so that Luffy is synonymous with the fruits ideal that it just wouldn’t let him die, he had to be the one to bang the drums, the way it happens is just epic
Personally, I love Gear 5th. Unlike Super Saiyan or Sage Mode, or whatever other super form other Shounen have, I'm actually excited to see Gear 5th every single time it appears and not just the first time. Because every single time, it is-and so long as Oda remains the writer, will always be-FUN.

Gear 5th is something that grows on you over time but I think my favorite part is not only the cartoony powers but also that the powers can affect EVERYTHING I was choking on laughter when I saw Law’s eyes pop out of his head but the lower half of his face remained stoic. I liked Luffy's Gear 5th since day 1 because of a few things:
1) Making Luffy a Rubberhose Cartoon is brilliant when you remember Oda's inspiration for the Gum-Gum powers was "I wanted my Main Character to fight in a Silly Way."
2) It retroactively makes Gear 4th have more sense because it was never rubber powers but rather cartoon powers, and cartoons change their look rather often.
3) IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW how Luffy always recovers so quickly, he is a goddamn Zoan DF user! and Zoan's recovery speed is busted!

No, it's not cartoon powers. I genuinely don't know how half of the fandom seems to have this misunderstanding. Luffy's power is still having a rubber body. The awakening just lets him control it freely. Gear 4th was abusing his rubber body to force himself into a different form, but gear 5 is his natural transformation using the fruit for what it's supposed to be.

The day G5 happened in the Manga I was still anime only, and I was caught up. My friend who got me into OP demanded that I read the Manga to catch up before it got spoiled to me and I'm very glad that I did. Its crazy how even 16 months later finally seeing it animated has the same impact as when I first read it.
There's a theory that the reason Katakuri chose not to keep fighting Luffy at Wholecake Island and just fell on his back is that he'd looked into the future and saw what would happen if he killed Luffy, saw Luffy turning white and using him as a jump rope and thought "nope I'm not having any of that"

In my opinion Gear Fifth is an absolute metatextual triumph. There's a line when he first awakens where Luffy says something to the effect of 'I feel like I can do anything,' which is almost like Oda speaking directly to the reader. Luffy and Oda both achieved the highest level of freedom with Gear Fifth. It is said to have the power to put smiles on peoples faces and I for one grin ear to ear every time I see Gear Fifth in action.

That is the real genius behind gear 5 not the goofy op powers. The way it feels like something new, almost retconed for some bit at the same time luffy has always been someone that put smile on faces while fighting and be liberating individual and nations since day 1. I actually really liked how they portrayed Kaido's response to defeating Luffy. He isn't happy about the way that he won, he seemingly gets angry and decides to immediately take that anger out on anyone left.

I think the personality change of Luffy in gear 5th can best be compared to the personality change of Goku in Super Saiyan. Goku just becomes more true to his saiyan heritage, and likewise Luffy just becomes more true to his own personality's instincts in face of all the freedom he experiences.
And here I was, literally JUST thinking about how Luffy's first Gear 5 transformation will unfortunately still be remembered as his "Super Saiyan Moment"... But you know what? I think, given time, it will actually be remembered as the moment that changed the game, so to speak. Great to see another video from ya Tekking, I was starting to feel a little bitter lol
Luffy def had his Super Saiyan moment here but this will not change the concept of transformations because:
1. Luffy activated after death (may play a role in copycat animes)
2. Luffy acts too carefree the practical opposite end of other famous transformations
3. Oda made his transformation too consulted that I do not foresee other shonen trying to imitate it when they can stick with the tried and true “train, get stronger, transform.”
I initially didn't like gear 5th in the manga that much. But from what I've seen so far this form was MADE for the anime. And then actually hearing the drums of liberation on the soundtrack is amazing.
I think the death/rebirth metaphor is something specific to the Gum Gum fruit. I imagine most devil fruit users just train their bodies to unlock the power, but Luffy unlocked his early because of the severe adrenaline shock of a near death experience. The literal interpretation of the drums of liberation being his heart going into overdrive trying to keep his body alive, pumping his blood even harder like an advanced version of what Gear 2 did.
What if Luffy looking old after G5 is ACTUALLY HOW HE LOOKS without his DF abilities. What if in those moments his DF is completely turned off. Once his DF restarts his skin is rubber again and regains its youthful look. Luffy has used his life span a bunch of times for different reasons and Oda hasn't addressed the ramifications at all. Maybe he's already shown us the consequences of using up life force.
I love this theory.. but it would be really bad for Luffy if it were true. There's so much One Piece left, so many big fights, and he looked so old. He very likely will use more abilities that burn his life span in those future fights, so...
Law's gonna need to come in clutch with the Immortality Surgery... either that, or Luffy is gonna look like Brook soon.
I would say that gear 5 is also a culmination of the freedom he has given throughout the different journeys. Luffy has freed not only his crew(most of them), but the people in the islands and the friends they made on the way. For him to give the whole world joy, he must be the one with pure joy. The way Oda makes fans wonder and theorize is so joyous!

G5 was my favorite thing to see, seeing Luffy bounce around and get cartoony which was something that made me smile it fit him to a T in how that form works and I do agree that G5 is gonna be great to see in the anime
Have you noticed these details from the preview for 1071? Luffy's shadow stretches for no reason in particular and the sash in Luffy's Wano costume is purple, gomu gomu fruit purple. Its a nice little touch

I love G5 because Oda the mad lad managed to create something that checks some of the most popular fan theories of what his power-up will be - and yet he manages to not only make it it's own thing and and as far as I know unique in anime.
Seems like it's an unspoken rule about transformations that your final form is more sleak and simple. Prior forms can go crazy, making characters into big monsters or whatever but the final form just looks like them with a small change.
I think the idea of the Hito Hito no mi model: Nika needing people to return from death in order to awaken the ability makes sense. The whole fruit is about freedom and I think in order to awaken the freedom fruit you need to be free from everything including the idea that death is the end
Also: I'm not sure if this is true but I read somewhere that there is going to be a new opening starting from next episode in the anime as well as an ending which hasn't been in one piece for about a decade

I kinda like to think that Kaido’s quote about awakening a Devil fruit is about having your Mind and Body catch up to the power in your SOUL.
And Devil Fruits are, atleast we think, connected to a person’s soul. So when they die, they finally become dis-connected, or perhaps even stay a part of it who knows.
But the idea that Luffy’s soul is so strong that it took most of his life of training, fighting a Yonko, and DYING to give his body a chance to get strong enough to handle the awakening is pretty sick.
I like to think that Luffy didn’t HAVE to die, but it was like a shortcut. Like, eventually, he would have his heart beat the Drums of Liberation eventually.
But by dying, his soul basically forces his body to come back by beating his heart, which just so happens to be to the rhythm of the Drums of Liberation.

My opinion is that the still remaining fruits soul/spirit actively helped Ruffy to reach this point in order to stay where it thought it belongs

In addition Ruffy surounded himself with quite important individuals... Vivi a decendant of Lili, Robbin who can read Porneglyphs, Franky with the blueprints of a counterweapon to Pluton, shirahoshi the reincarnation of Poseidon, Momo who can talk to zounisha (part of Pluton maybe)...
And therefore the spirit helped Ruffy to take this last step because it sees a chance for a better outcome when it stays where it is
i think Gear 5 is a perfect example of what i want out of a power up. Cool design, cool ability, good story reasoning and theme.
Something in the anime scene makes me think its not the death that was the catalyst, but it was nakama (Otama and Nami highlighted in the episode) holding on to their belief in him, and doubling down on the thought that he'll return.

I took part of what the Gorosei said about how the fruit always evades them and how it's own will has some... specific quirks, is that is doesn't really influence its wielder like that (aside from just cranking the dial on luffy until it breaks off). Instead, the whole thing with the fruit is it does all it can to pick wielders who match the character of the fruit.
the fruit doesn't need to influence Luffy because he's basically already a perfect match. it just makes him more Luffy.
i honestly think Luffy’s base form feels just as free now as gear 5 as far as how he feels and his personality. Remember when he showed Bonney the form and when he got mad about there being no food, he temporarily hit a g5 pose in both of those instances. i think the fun part is just his constant state atp

Gear 5th is my favorite power up in anime history. It’s absolutely amazing in both build up, and power.
Gear 5th was Great! Loved it when it was revealed. Style was good, waaaay better than Gear 4. Only thing I think could be better is to foreshadow it better. Maybe introduce The myth of Nikka at the impel down arc, sky island arc or something. Not just hinted at some fights before Luffy turns Gear 5.
They did mention nikka few times and there was a foreshadow back at the skypia arc

I love Luffy's sun nika form it is so cool probably my favorite form ever from Luffy. Gear fifth is different than all the others forms because Luffy has white sea anemone hair with white shorts and he looks more pale too. so cool I cannot wait for the next episode when Luffy turns his entire environment into rubber. Kind of like King Midas with the golden touch where everything he touched turned to gold. And turned Kaido into rubber from the inside and used him as a jump rope so funny. I also like Kaido's drunken phases that he goes through because he is heavy on drinking which is so funny. So all and all I am excited for future episodes great animation.
At 11:08 when he was talking about how Luffy had to die to awaken his fruit it really got me thinking about this. I mean, the only devil fruit that I would have expected to awaken with your death would have been the phoenix fruit. I mean, the legend is literally that it would ignite itself and from the ashes either an egg or a new Phoenix would arise. That’s literally the only story about it actually.
I think that Zoan awakenings have a time or power limit that you can use. Such as (spoilers ahead) after the fight with Lucci, he was tired out. And when he and Lucci teamed up, they didn’t use their awakenings. Luffy used gear 4 and Lucci just used his hybrid mode.
I think it’s just an issue of stamina… Gear 5th is still incredibly taxing on Luffy and will be for a long time, and Lucci might be in the same boat given that he awakened his DF within the past couple years as well.
When it comes to gear 5ths design I think it looks fine
but am still very confused about why it changes his color, also dont like the retcon of it being turned into a mythical god zoan.
I'm hoping that its revealed that Robin's Demonio is in fact her Awakening, or at least part of it, and she and Luffy get a chance to use their Awakenings together. I would love that.
I don't think Awakenings all need a near-death experience to happen. I don't really see Katakuri as ever having had one. I think the user just needs to face a certain amount of duress, perhaps different for each fruit.
It's funny that you'd use the word "ecstasy" to describe his mood because the main psychoactive drug in ecstasy called MDMA expends so much serotonin that your reserves are completely drained within a couple days of usage. When you start to come down from the drug you get so disappointed because you just wanna feel that way forever, so it's normal that people binge it for a couple of days in a row, but then the drug stops having any effect on them because they run out of serotonin. If they completely spend their serotonin then it's normal to get a few days of depression and low energy afterwards because of serotonin deficiency. Luffy's after-effects of Gear 5 match up with the expected neurochemistry of what would happen if you spend that much serotonin (and adrenaline), it's not completely fictional.
It doesn't really reduce your lifespan though, it just feels shitty while you recover. You'd have to take a lot of MDMA very often for the neurotoxic effects to cause any irreversible damage.
I think that luffy had to awaken his fruit by dying because he would never really give his mind up to anything, so the devil fruit kind of did take over for a bit of the fight but I feel like luffy started gaining control later on in the fight.
One could say that luffy does have a devil inside of him, the devil fruit as it was said by Vegapunk is the embodiment of ones dreams manifested. And from what the Gorousei said once talking about the nika fruit: It was elluding them for hundreds of years, almost like it has a mind of its own.
Luffy is the one in control, but I see the Nika fruit as having it's own mind, it's just so in sync with luffy that it isn't really noticed. That along with having to die, is the reason joyboy returned.

The way you described the whole power up in other stories reminds me that this might’ve all started or at least one of the earliest ones that inspired the ones you mentioned is Devilman, story premise is Akira Fudo being possessed by a demon but maintaining his sense of self unlike most other people, most iterations all there is to it is grappling with the new instincts and aggressive tendencies, others would have the demon actually be conscious and be fighting against Akira (and then the odd one out where the demon took Akira’s place and basically got pacified by his surroundings and love wanting to protect Akira’s friends and family). One can find a lot of parallels to the other examples especially with Akira being portrayed as a good person possibly one of the sweetest good willed person around (which is why he was the candidate for demon possession by his friend who learned of and tried to find a way to fight back choosing devil power to fight devils). Just a normal kid taking in the supernatural to fight the supernatural

Wano was my first start to finish arc reading the manga weekly, so i was definitely feeling it drag on by the time gear 5 was about to happen, but i was blown away by how much it fits his character especially since this probably wasnt heavily thought out back when oda begun one piece aside from the general idea.
But im a huge fan of how Oda subverted the 'inner demon' trope with shounen protagonist surprise power ups.
Although, now that we know that luffy has a zoan devil fruit, that might mean that he will stop fighting using his gears, and start transforming from his hybrid/base form into the full Nika transformation since the gears are shortening his life and also gear 5 can do all of the expandy stretchy stuff without having to blow into his body
It recontextualizes everything, every moment when a villain said "rubber doesn't suppose to do that!" now it makes sense. It always was the cartoon cartoon fruit.
What I like about gear 5th is the fandoms reaction; everyone loves how cartoonish it is, how it fits Luffy and the themes of One Piece unlike when everyone liked snake man because it was more serious and badass compared to bounce man. Really shows what you come to the series for.
I think most are just appreciating the novelty. It just happened. People did the same with Gear 4 then after a while started dumping on it.

8:55 I adore the idea of Nika being within Luffy's mind the whole time though, living again through him and hoping that one day, he could really meet all of Luffy's friends- to him, *his* friends- in the flesh.
My thought is that there’s two ways to awaken a DF: Luffy’s way, through insane training and a near-death shock to his system; or Katakuri’s way, through multiple decades of more controlled training that allows him to eventually skip the near-death experience. Alternatively, the Hito Hito no Mi Model Nika, being a mythical Zoan, might not be able to awaken without the near-death experience no matter how long the user trains, explaining why it hasn’t been awakened in 800 years.
i believe the shift in personality would be similar to the additional "bloodlust" that carnivorous Zoan users get, still Luffy, just "liberated"
I also think that Luffys awakening may be special compared to other fruits, since gear 5th needed his heart to have a unique beat having his heart stop would have been a important moment for luffy to awaken it.

Let us not forget that, after getting separated from his crew and landing on Amazon Lily, Luffy's first idea to handle his sadness was to consume "happy mushrooms", something he apparently used to do as a kid.
So yeah, Luffy is no stranger to artificially altering his mood and seems to rather enjoy that kinda stuff. Maybe worth keeping in mind for later, that could be a potential pitfall he'll have to navigate.

10:20 At first I was afraid that this power would imply that Luffy's progress was just because he got a powerful devil fruit but I think Oda did a great job at keeping it consistent with the whole "df is as good as the user's imagination" theme (quite literally with Luffy lmao). The only reason that Luffy even got to a point where he could harness the full power of his fruit was because he was so well-fitted for it already and used it in ingenious ways, it isn't just an automatic win button. If any other person with a different mindset had eaten the fruit I don't think it would've done much else than what Luffy's base form did.
Here’s something that people tend to overlook: To awaken a fruit is to have one’s body, mind and soul be in sync with it so the personality within the soul of Nika is by extension already similar to what Luffy is.

The point about Luffy dying. Perhaps the meaning behind the fruit is that when he dies, he is no longer shackled by the limits of being a living thing. Just a thought
I don't think you have to die to awaken (for example Katakuri, I doubt he's ever been near death unless Big Mom slapped him around once before Luffy arrived xD). I think Luffy just happened to be lucky, like if he'd died earlier on in the series he'd be dead, but cus he was just reaching the point of awakening as he died and because he's made of rubber he was able to restart his own heart by pumping it with his power and pure will unconciously.
I agree with your sentiment. To say that death is required would only be head Canon unless confirmed. The main statement for awakening was by kaido (body and mind reaching the potential to reach new peaks). All the training that luffy undertook made his body do just that as he was reaching new peaks during the fight. Then, by the end, as he said, "This is my peak, gear 5th." His death may have been the catalyst like maybe his body force a resuscitation through the very will of th devil fruit. Who knows. But I personally don't like the idea of death being a requirement.

Actually, I still feel iffy about Franky's post timeskip design. It has been like 12 years, and it still doesn't sit right for me. Mostly because he doesn't really live up to his design. He got bigger for him to mostly just sit in a mech suit. I honestly can't really think of a single time where his actual new body did anything to his power. I feel everything he has done could also have been done pre timeskip. At the very least this should show that nothing he has done has been very memorable, besides his fight with Senor Pink, but that's just because it was against Senor Pink. I also feel he became more mellow and nicer.

I always see people arguing and hating on certain decisions or aspects of one piece while claiming to be fans of it.. but to me, while they be fans, they're missing the entire point of the series. We're supposed to be getting along and allowing one piece to bring us together, not debate about the live action or whether g5 was the correct choice. Who cares? The story is awesome and our boy is about to whoop an emperor in the anime 😁 lets go!!
I never was big fan of Luffy, but I liked the implication that his power awoke because he died, as in, he was not afraid of life, and this love for freedom is what awaken his powers.

I think the story would have been more impactful if luffy became pirate king with just rubber powers from the gomu gomu no mi, a fruit that people dont really think should belong to a main character. now that luffy has a hito hito no mi model nika i just hope that oda doesnt go down the "chosen one" path for luffy, it would make all of his feats so far feel lack luster because hes somehow the chosen god now and all of his victories are just because of the plot. but whatever oda wants to do with it i fully trust him because at the end of the day this is my fav manga and it wont change any time soon.
I think he is only capable of awakening Joyboy *because* he is who he is so it works for me. The gorosei said others have had the fruit but no one's been capable of awakening it

About the devil fruit wills thing, I believe it’s more about compatibility that actual will. My current theory is to awaken a fruit you need to embody the fruit’s power. Doflamingo was a manipulator, a puppet master, he always pulled the strings behind the scenes. His personality lent himself well to a string based devil fruit. Mochi symbolizes sustenance and nobility due to being very filling which melds well with katakuri was a bit of a glutton and always presented himself as a “noble” or perfect being.
The wills in a devil fruit are more so what the power symbolizes and if you sync well with your power it awakens. Only those whoms characteristics match the criteria will awaken which could be misconstrued as a form of will.
The resin thing was a nice theory.
However, it is actually hilarious, because I had a theory that Luffy was either a Special Paramecia or a Mythical Zoan before he awakened. It was around the time the assault on Onigashima started. I thought he was a Special Paramecia in the same vein as Katakuri. Then I thought that it might be a Mythical Zoan because: Monkey D Luffy, wants to become King of the Pirates, Monkey.. King 🤔🤔. 😳🤦🏽♂️.

I went back to watch the clip where she talked about it, and it does imply she has seen Gear 5th or "that White Luffy" before, but I am not sure. She had no idea about the next arc though, which she was also talking about (watch?v=KvE6sj9eg5w). While she doesn't mention the trailer, this clip is from 6 days ago, so she likely found out through the teaser trailer.

I think it's just luffy dying that awakens his fruit or that other fruits would awaken like this. The way i see it each fruit awakens differently, it requires the user to fully embody the fruit in essence and power, in the nika nika's case it would be embodying freedom and fighting for it to the point of putting ur life on the line with no regret and genuinely having fun while doing it. So when luffy fights his whole life with all the ideals bring truly represented and actually dies, showing how big his resolve is, specifically to kaido, a massively strong and freedom-threatning foe, he awakens. I dont think if he died in the barrel he would have awakened right there u know
What if Joyboy lost not because the WG beat him, but because they fought for so long and he kept on shortening his lifespan that he knew he was going to die and they were going to lose because of it (that's why he had the time to write the apology letter and plan out the poneglyphs, look at Roger, he knew he was going to die and he did the stuff he wanted to before he died)
I like to think that Luffy will have a hybrid form - that isn't more powerful than gear fifth, but that Luffy will see like 'Okay. I need to be careful about this' and will use a form that is not as strong as Fifth, but that he can be better than fourth
And I think I have seen this in a fair lot of media, I just don't remember where. But, basically, I think that Luffy will find a way to stay in that form longer, but in a weaker version of it

Gear 5th is just Luffy but high. Most of the badass transformations in Shonen are a result of rage (Goku's first SSJ transformation, Gon's rampage). Luffy loves fighting. He may enter fights in a rage (Arlong, Lucci) but that isn't what drives him, it is the desire to free people from despair and the sheer love of the battle.. Gear 5th is the perfect embodiment of his desires and his unwavering commitment to that (Gon's transformation worked because it was a jarring departure from the character we knew and was short lived. It would take a lot to justify it as a permanent upgrade). It's because there is no departure for Luffy and he has had to work at it that Gear 5th easily surpasses its contemporaries.
The good thing too is he can probably still pull off a badass form in G5. G5 when he's angry might be pretty menacing.
Ever think that the reason we never hear luffys inner monologue is because there is a joy boy in there and that is why he was so easily able to identify what was going on with blackbeard and his split persona but to confirm that to early would ruin a story point.
Not a manga, but DC Comics Final Crisis has something like that with the shattering of time messing with the structure of the comics. If you like DC, highly recommend. Possibly my favorite crisis event (incredibly unpopular opinion) just based on how much of it is really commentary on the direction of the industry at the time.

Luffy awakening his power through death reminded me of Yusuke's Mazoku awakening (the OG Vasto Lorde). Not to mention the fact that both powers have unusual heartbeats as a result.

Personally, I love Gear 5th.
Unlike Super Saiyan or Sage Mode, or whatever other super form other Shounen have, I'm actually excited to see Gear 5th every single time it appears and not just the first time.
