Just listened to that along with the rest of Made in Japan, yesterday. Was just confirming in my mind what I already knew.Made in Japan = the best live hard rock album ever.
These are the ones I listened to the most. 1. Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same 2. Foghat Live 3. Frampton Comes Alive 4. Deep Purple - Made in Japan 5. Wings Over America
First of all, I would like to wish you Merry Christmas, and to express my gratitude for advising me (I was using a different nickname) to go and see Deep Purple on this tour! It was a great concert in Belgrade, Serbia, the arena was packed, great crowd, Don, Steve and Roger were on fire! Paice was solid, and Gillan was..you know :) Anyway, my favorite live albums are Kiss Alive! (although I become a fan because of Alive III) and DP Made in Japan, those bands are so good live, DP's virtuosity and jamming and Kiss's energy are something special - and these are my all time favourite rock bands. And Kiss is one of the few bands that could sound better live than in the studio.
Mountain- Twin peaks Judas Priest- Unleashed in the east Jethro Tull-bursting out Pat Travers- go for what you know Yes-yessongs Genesis-Secinds out Deep purple made in japan Hawkwind Jimi Hendrix band of gypsys Kiss -Alive II Nazareth - SNAZ
My favorite live album is CHICAGO Live at Carnegie Hall, which contains some of the very best bass guitar performances of all time. Peter Cetera was the Hendrix of bass players in the 1970's.... Take a listen and you just might agree with me.
I agree, it's a great live release. Much better than live in Japan IMO. Terry Kath is one of the best guitarists ever and you rarely hear him mentioned with the other top players.
Hi M K. Great comments. And I totally agree that Carnegie Hall is a much better live performance than Live in Japan. Terry Kath was a giant, and was underrated because he was a team player in a horn-based rock band instead of a guitar-based rock band.
@@JimmyPlato1 you can say what you want about 80s Chicago with Cetera as the frontman (I hated the musical direction they took) , but the guy was an excellent bassist. Carnegie really showcases that and also there's much more Kath guitar. That is always a good thing IMO.
Very pleasantly surprised to see this mentioned; I play it to this day. Kath was a great player, as was Cetera. Danny Seraphine shows what a monster and underrated drummer he is throughout the whole four album release! It gets beat up a lot because of the poor recorded sound and some sloppy playing here and there but it really showcases what a strong and talented group of musicians the originals were, especially during their early days!
@JimmyPlato totally agree with you about Chicago Live At Carnegie Hall Always couldn’t understand how it doesn’t get it’s just due...the sound quality is much much better than people complain about always Kath was a complete monster & Peter Cetera is just killing on the bass Danny Seraphine has always been one of the greatest drummers IMO The remastered 4 disc set put out maybe 15 years ago is an item I hope to pass down to my grandchildren some day if ever blessed
An underrated gem of heavy live blues rock is Fleetwood Mac’s “Live in Boston” (1970). Doesn’t get much better than the twin guitar attack of Peter Green and Danny Kirwan! Both of them at the top of their game on their Les Pauls.
Hey Pete, although we differ in favorites, I enjoy listening to how passionate you are regarding your love for your favorite bands, music, etc. very cool! My favorite s are strangers in the night, all the worlds a stage and live after death. Rick on! \m/
Made in Japan, probably the best recorded live album ever, especially The Mule. I used to play this selling Yamaha NS1000 speakers (£800 a pair in 1978!).
AC/DC If you want blood- exceptional live album which really captured how they were, Hate his politics to the core but Nugents Double Live Gonzo is in the top 25 and Lynyrd Skynyrd One more from the road- top stuff. Love the channel and the debates etc.

I like a lot of the albums mentioned but THE LIVE ALBUM for me has always been Lou Reed - Rock'n'Roll animal. I also like UFO - "Live" just as much as "Strangers in the night" . Rolling Stones - Brussels Affair. I wish they had released more from 71 - 73.
I'm glad my first live album ever was Live at Leeds. The next week, I got some extra cash and bought Made in Japan. This compilation of albums is solid gold; I respect the KISS choice 100% though I personally do not care for it.
A little disappointed not to see the first live album I ever bought. It's raw, it's powerful and it captures the bands live performance perfectly... I speak of course about the great "Slade Alive!"
I’m with you on Slade Alive. It’s up there with greatest live albums. It’s not better than Live at Leeds and Made in Japan though. It comes very close.
Pete, I am glad you picked Rush "All the World's a Stage" instead of "Exit Stage Left". Even though "Exit" has better sound and production, All the World a Stage is just so raw and energetic sounding even though Rush is so tight, it still sounds very spontaneous and atmospheric....and you can tell they are having the time of their life's playing their music!! Everytime I hear it, its like I am transported back in a time machine and I'm right front row center!! You also nailed Kiss "Alive as well. Life changing and set me on my path/journey of Hard Rock and Metal that to this day, I am thankful for!! Glad I didn't buy that Saturday Night Fever album. Kiss "Alive" saved me!!!! Thank God!!!!
My gateway live album was Little Feat Waiting For Columbus. Might have lead me in a slightly different direction. I was playing cornet in the school brass band. So having Tower Of Power playing with them, didn't make them difficult to like.
I guess I am too old for most of those albums but my number one at least made the charts and I certainly didn't expect that - Gentle Giant Playing the Fool. Merry Christmas and many thanks for all the work you do for us.
Live albums were gateways for so many of us, snapshots of a place in time, introductions to bands discographies, music genres, etc. Heck, this is why bootlegs became so popular. I would have added BOC's On your feet or on your knees, nevertheless great list and always a pleasure to listen to your programs! Thanks amigo!
What about MSG - One Night in Budokan? Ok, try to ignore Barden's voice, but Schenker's and his V are 'flying'! Rainbow - Live on Stage 1976/77. RJD's voice is EPIC!. Mistreated makes what's left of my hair stand on end!. All the best Pete. Cheers.
@@jake6887 Sorry pal, but Barden couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, even if he used both hands! Joking aside, I just don't think that it was ever a strong enough or good enough voice.
Hey Pete, I'm so glad you put Band of Gypsys on this list, and specifically mentioned the greatness of that Machine Gun. To me there is almost nothing greater than those soaring guitar moments in that song. Also, Robin Trower live!! That is another GREAT album.
GREAT STUFF PETE............GLAD YOU INCLUDED, "FREE" - 'LIVE'.........A CLASSIC FORGOTTEN ALBUM........AND IT WAS SAVAGED BY THE CRITICS WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT! It's funny. My best friend in high school had Deep Purple live in japan as his favorite. Me it was UFO SITN of course. I don't particularly like his favorite and he didnt like mine either :D It was hell at parties. We'd endup listening to Judas Priest unleashed in the east and other albums as a councellation .
The best thing for me about this whole series has been the opportunity to find out about and hear new live albums. One such is Gentle Giant's Playing The Fool; it's only in the past couple of years that I've been getting into their studio albums and this is a revelation on all levels, so thanks Pete! I know there'll be more to come as I pick up other albums from the series.
I found this one at a used book store last year. Excellent live album! I prefer many of the tracks on this to the actual studio tracks on the first 2 albums.
100% RIP, Randy... I wept when I first heard it (the solo to Goodbye to Romance, IIRC). The spotlight solo in Suicide Solution is worth the price of the album.

(although I become a fan because of Alive III) and DP Made in Japan, those bands are so good live, DP's virtuosity and jamming and Kiss's energy are something special - and these are my all time favourite rock bands. And Kiss is one of the few bands that could sound better live than in the studio.
Mountain- Twin peaks
Judas Priest- Unleashed in the east
Jethro Tull-bursting out
Pat Travers- go for what you know
Yes-yessongs
Genesis-Secinds out
Deep purple made in japan
Hawkwind
Jimi Hendrix band of gypsys
Kiss -Alive II
Nazareth - SNAZ
@JimmyPlato totally agree with you about Chicago Live At Carnegie Hall
Always couldn’t understand how it doesn’t get it’s just due...the sound quality is much much better than people complain about always
Kath was a complete monster & Peter Cetera is just killing on the bass
Danny Seraphine has always been one of the greatest drummers IMO
The remastered 4 disc set put out maybe 15 years ago is an item I hope to pass down to my grandchildren some day if ever blessed
Hi Pete... spot on 'Made in Japan' amazing, still remember the first moment I heard it... sounds great, no overdubs... keep coming back to it!
Love LZ's "How The West Was Won," but give me the "Dazed & Confuzed" version from "Song Remains The Same," just incredible!
I totally agree, plus the NO QUARTER version from the same album.
An underrated gem of heavy live blues rock is Fleetwood Mac’s “Live in Boston” (1970). Doesn’t get much better than the twin guitar attack of Peter Green and Danny Kirwan! Both of them at the top of their game on their Les Pauls.
When you could honestly call the band . FLEETWOOD Mac!!!
Made in Japan
Who Live at Leeds
Little Feat Waiting For Columbus
Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya Yas Out
Allman Brothers FilmorebEast
Hey Pete, although we differ in favorites, I enjoy listening to how passionate you are regarding your love for your favorite bands, music, etc. very cool! My favorite s are strangers in the night, all the worlds a stage and live after death. Rick on! \m/
Made in Japan, probably the best recorded live album ever, especially The Mule. I used to play this selling Yamaha NS1000 speakers (£800 a pair in 1978!).
Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out, Rolling Stones, Live at MSG, November 1969. 😀
AC/DC If you want blood- exceptional live album which really captured how they were, Hate his politics to the core but Nugents Double Live Gonzo is in the top 25 and Lynyrd Skynyrd One more from the road- top stuff. Love the channel and the debates etc.
Yes....absolutely....AC/DC....If You Want Blood You've Got It.....Bon Scott....and what is hands down my favorite album cover....Uncle Ted....love his politics....not only Double Live Gonzo but Intensities in Ten Cities as well...( My Love is like a Tire Iron..) .and Lynyrd Skynyrd 's One More For the Road....one of the all time great live albums....." gimme a T for Texas gimme a T for Tennessee "
@@larrynolletti4594 there are a ton of great unofficial Bon Scott era live recordings on UA-cam. They could make some great releases if they chose to. Check it out some time if you haven't already.
@@mmk7340 Thanks...yes...I have....a lot of them I have on bootleg disc.....my favorites are Melbourne '74 and San Francisco '77...a killer Up to My Neck in You....yes...there is a ton of great AC/DC languishing...a lot of them were radio broadcasts....If You Want Blood surely should have been a double....I mean...Sin City was a staple and it's not on there....???...
I was a kid when that album came out, but Ted Nugent's Double Live Gonzo, is probably my all-time favorite live album
@@kurthanke5788 ...can't argue with that....I love everything he did thru Scream Dream....I can remember in high school buying Weekend Warrior....looking at this insane ballsy in your face album cover cranking up and hearing Need You Bad...for the first time....I'm telling you that was an adrenaline rush...
UFO - Strangers in the Night, Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes, Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East, Kiss - Alive, The Allman Brothers - At Fillmore East, Queen - Live Killers, Thin Lizzy - Life live, Uriah Heep - Live '73, Rainbow - On Stage, MSG - One Night At Budokan, Supertramp - Paris, Marillion - Real to Reel, Deep Purple - Made in Japan, Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed, Cheap Trick - At Budokan, Rush - All the World's a Stage, Kansas - Two For the Show, Black Sabbath - Live Evil, Peter Frampton- Frampton Comes Alive, Motorhead - No Sleep Till Hammersmith, Simple Minds - Live in the City of Light, U2 - Under the Blood Red Sky, Dire Straits - Alchemy, The Who - Live at Leeds, Rammstein - Volkerball.
A couple of my favourites that aren't mentioned often, if at all, are FM/Live by Climax Blues Band and Live by Johnny Winter And. Both are absolute killer albums.
I give a thumbs up just for mentioning Climax Blues Band !!!!
Good list. Here is my top in no order: Live album-Grand Funk Railroad, Rockin at the fillmore-Humble Pie, Live Nickelodeon-Masters Apprentices, You get what you play for-Reo Speedwagon, Live-Head East,Live at leeds- The Who, Exit stage left-Rush, Are you ready-Atlanta rhytm section, Live dates-Wishbone Ash....
Strangers In The Night is tops for me. Others I love include, Live and Dangerous, Made In Japan, That's How The West Was Won, Caught In The Act (GFR), Unleashed In The East, Live at The Rainbow 78 (Foreigner), Quo Live, All The World's A Stage, Two For The Show, Loud and Clear/All Night Long (Sammy Hagar) Live Evil. Just a few other personal favourites.
Honorable mentions and my personal favourites
1. On your feet or on your knees - Blue Oyster Cult
2. What do you want from live - The Tubes
Both exceptional albums...
knowing the channel, I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention BOC's On your feet on your knees.
Jethro Tull live bursting out
Mountain-Twin Peaks
UFO - strangers in the night
Foghat live
Judas Priest- unleashed in the east
Talking Heads Stop Making Sense is my absolute favorite! listened probably 100 times, can't get enough
Completely agree with the top 2...Made in Japan and Strangers in the Night truly showed the musical brilliance of both bands.Rock Bottom on SITN is an Incredible version.......blew my mind 40 yrs ago as a teenager 😜
Jeff Beck with jam hammer live in london. Great recording. Great band line up. Amazing solos by both Jeff and Jan.
Saw the tour here in Houston, Tx fricken Awesome........
Lynyrd Skynyrd One More From The Road.
I think Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best American live band of the 1970s.
Agreed
One of the great live bands ever. Period.
Thanks for adding your list in the description, I can get why you may not always want to do but it is apricated.
Kiss Alive
Cheap Trick at Budokon
Simon & Garfunkel the concert in Central Park
Lou Reed Rock n Roll Animal....
Great list, Pete.
I guess I am too old for most of those albums but my number one at least made the charts and I certainly didn't expect that - Gentle Giant Playing the Fool. Merry Christmas and many thanks for all the work you do for us.
Gotta Have My Priest Unleashed In the East.
Cheers.
Just cause it doesn't make the top 25 doesn't mean I don't love it. I included well over 100 on this tournament, and I love all of them.
Both are in my top 10!!
Ignore Barden's voice???
@@jake6887 A friend of mine once described Barden as being "Brilliant and awful at the same time." I think that sums up his singing.
Love Grand Funk Live....Mel Schacher's driving bass.
You have a few of the same titles on my list, thanks for sharing.
Is The Concert for Bangladesh by George Harrison on your list, Pete? Well, if it is or if it is not, it's a great live album indeed!
GREAT STUFF PETE............GLAD YOU INCLUDED, "FREE" - 'LIVE'.........A CLASSIC FORGOTTEN ALBUM........AND IT WAS SAVAGED BY THE CRITICS WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT!
I'LL THROW IN 3 MORE............"LOU REED" - 'LIVE'/'ROCK 'N' ROLL ANIMAL' - TWIN ALBUM CLASSICS..............THE GUITARISTS ARE SENSATIONAL!
"THE GUESS WHO - 'LIVE' AT THE PARAMOUNT" IS ALSO A MIND-BENDING CLASSIC!
LOVE YOUR WORK, PETE!
Made in Japan fantastic Album was a masterpiece at the time probably my Favourite live album also
Merry Christmas Pete!🎁🎄🙏🏻Thank you so much for taking the time to not just doing the live album tournament, but also sharing your favorite live albums. We know the effort that goes into it. Excited for what’s in store for 2020.-Chris & Beth🎧🔥🎄🎁🎸🥁
It's funny. My best friend in high school had Deep Purple live in japan as his favorite. Me it was UFO SITN of course. I don't particularly like his favorite and he didnt like mine either :D It was hell at parties. We'd endup listening to Judas Priest unleashed in the east and other albums as a councellation .
The One Above All great choice
@@hermanhelmich Yes....I threw Sinner on last night....it's utterly impossible to argue with you...
Playing fool is without a doubt the greatest live album ever.GG is/was the greatest most epic legendary unique genius band ever.
Ozzy Osbourne Tribute to Randy Rhoads. Perfection!
Live and Dangerous...Strangers in the night....and everything else
I've been waiting for this! Merry Christmas Pete!
Yes. I shared the link to your video with quite a few UFO SITN videos on youtube to get more votes. Only took a few seconds and no one was stopping Deep Purple fans from doing the very same thing.
Yeah....well ..don't know if Purple fans bothered doing that....but the Rush fans sure as hell did....
@@larrynolletti4594 I guess that many in the Deep Purple camp havent quite grasped the concept of the internet yet :D
@@TheOneAboveAll ..well....not just the Deep Purple camp......but the Zeppelin camp....the Allmans camp...the Judas Priest camp....and many many more....were equally as ignorant....
KISS was my gateway band to everything too. Totally agree. Bought Rock And Roll Over in ‘77.
Thanks for this list Pete. I will give some of those a good listening to. 801 LIVE is my top pick.
