Probably rather overlooked, but still gave the songs and albums more energy: Barriemore Barlow (drummer in Jethro Tull from This As A Brick up to Stormwatch).
Great dynamic drumming! By the way: Awesome channel, Pete. Really enjoy watching your videos! Cheers from a German 'UA-cam colleague'! :)
Glad to hear Gavin Harrison on this list. My favorite active drummer.
1.Bonham
2. Peart
3. Ward.
4. Moon
5 Collins.
Bonham, Baker, Peart, Copeland, Ward, Paice, Powell. In no particular order. Depends on my mood
Barriemore Barlow of Jethro Tull is one of the best
Milos Dunjic exactly! IMHO more original and innovative then Neil Peart.
His drum parts on Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play are jaw dropping!! Incredible musicians in that band!
A very under rated drummer I love his work
Nice choices. Phil Collins is the most underrated drummer from the 70’s. Also Vinnie Colluta from Zappa etc.
Cozy all the way! No one cooler ever sat down at or even got near a drum kit.
A few years ago on the anniversary of Powell's death, I had a couple glasses of wine and e-mailed one of the top classic rock DJ's in New York and asked for a tribute block to be played. Suggested Stargazer, Kill The King, Gates of Babylon, Lost In Hollywood, Slow an' Easy, etc. He e-mailed me back saying that none of his listeners ever heard of Cozy Powell or any of the songs I mentioned. I responded with, "that's because you never play them!!"
Anyway, radio is a lost cause, so thank GOD for people like Pete to discuss music too good for the masses and keep alive the legacy of legends like Cozy Powell. Thanks Pete, great channel and video!
Never heard of Cozy or above songs?
And these people present a rock show?🤣🤣🤣
That's a very, very sad state of affairs. Never heard of Cozy Powell, what kind of rock station is that.. Load of nonsense.
Great comeback by the way, that's because you never play them.
Absolute 100%..
Mitch Mitchell. Not remembered enough!
When Hendrix went nuts, Mitch had to keep up. A tall order!
@Johny2bikes .. agree 100%
sure he is - this younger generation doesn't know, but the rest of us love/respect the great Mitch Mitchell
Mich's drumming in the original Jimi Hendrix experience was amazing!
How can there be such a omission?...
@@stephaneherringtoniowritin9180 Absolutely.
Rest in peace, Neil Ellwood Peart.....
Mick Tucker is my all time drummer hero! R.I.P.
Yes he was brilliant and he was a big fan of Ian Paice of course. He doesn't get a huge mention because Sweet not really known outside Europe.
Amazing drummer
Billy Cobham is my #1 - consistently defies what should be possible for a human being. As a big fusion fan, I have to make a case for Pierre Moerlen, whose work on the Gong albums of the late ‘70s is magnificent. And if the role of a drummer is to achieve symbiosis with the bass in the rhythm section, Alan White must be mentioned: his playing (as one with Chris Squire) on Relayer (Yes’ contribution to fusion) is his very best work - only one of the jazz fusion greats, or perhaps one of the batch of supremely gifted younger technical magicians, could have rivaled Alan on Gates of Delirium and Soundchaser.
Neal Peart, John Bonham, Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Lee Kerslake, old Peter Criss, Mike Portnoy, Phil Rudd, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer, Phil Collins, Ginger Baker, Cozy Powell, Bill Bruford
My top 10 drummers:
1. John Bonham
2. Neil Peart
3. Nigel Olsson
4. Alex Van Halen
5. Buddy Rich
6. Keith Moon
7. Artimus Pyle
8. Roger Taylor
9. Ringo Starr
10. Mitch Mitchell
Honorable mentions:
Ginger Baker, Tommy Aldridge, Peter Criss, Nick Mason, and Phil Collins
You hit a lot of my favorites also thanks for mentioning Steve Smith, Steve Gadd as with Ian Paice. Three honorable mentions would include Stewart Copeland of the Police, Danny Carey of Tool, Nicko McBrain Iron Maiden.
Stewart Copeland doesn't get enough mention probably because The Police weren't hard rock, metal prog and so on. Harder for someone to get wider recogniton if they get known for being in a rock/pop band in the mainstream. I loved his playing off the beats.
1. Mike Portnoy
2. Bill Bruford
3. Phil Collins
4. Blake Richardson
5. Martin Lopez
6. John Bonham
7. Lenny White
8. Vinnie Colaiuta
9. Bill Ward
10. Carl Palmer
Awful news about Neil Peart's death. A giant of a man, drummer & lyricist.
who?
Rush Moving Pictures tour 1981. This was my first Rush concert. It was incredible
@@bishlap best drummer of all time
@@dennischritskou3631 LoL.. I know all about peart...good ROCK drummer, far from the BEST. There's Buddy Rich
Joe Morello,
Elvin Jones.. and everyone else.
Bonham hands down the best!
I disagree. It's Ginger Baker.
Bonham's playing is what _metallicized_ Led Zeppelin!
Gotta be Jeff Porcaro!
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 No, Charlie Watts. (That's a joke, man.)
Chris Partridge from the Partridge Family. Great chemistry with bassist Danny.
And how bout Jughead of the Archies?
Not even close to the groove that Peter Tork and Mickey Dolenz had
Who was better though brown haired Chris or blonde Chris?
Jay Osmond pwns all!

Hi Pete. I'm a Rock Drummer.
My favorites are in no order...
John 'f^*kin'' Bonham, Phil Collins, Buddy Rich, Bun E. Carlos, Mitch Mitchell, John Densmore, Stewart Copeland, Nick Mason, Bill Bruford, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, Neal Peart, Roger Taylor (Queen), Terry Bozzio, Alex Van Halen, Tommy Lee, David Grohl. and a few more.
I like your Channel. Btw. Good stuff 👍
Jerry Mercer: ex-April Wine - Killer!
Serge Chriqui Great call. Forgot about him!!!
@ Serge Chriqui ... Agreed, I included him in my top ten personal favourite drummers.
excellent drummer. excellent.
1. John Bonham
2. Danny Carey
3. Bill Ward
4. Ian Paice
5. Neil Peart
In no particular order: Dave Abbruzese, Jimmy Chamberlin, Gavin Harrison, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon, Nick Mason, Cozy Powell, Dave Grohl, Mick Fleetwood, Chad Gracey, Jeff Burrows(The Tea Party), Christian Tanna(I Mother Earth), Carter Beauford, Matt Cameron(with Soundgarden), Ginger Baker, Brad Wilk, Lars Ulrich, Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, Mario Duplantier
That's a great 5. That would probably be mine as well along with mitch mitchell and Keith moon
Ansley Dunbar / Amazing drummer. Seen him with Jefferson Starship in Baton Rouge in the early 80's, D Solo was awesome!
If we're just talking favorites: Sib Hashian, Jim Masdea & Doug Huffman (Boston), Jim Capaldi (Traffic), Phil Collins, Jim Gordon, Jeff Porcaro, Bernard Purdie, Alex Van Halen, Michael Shrieve, Steve Smith, Jody Stephens (Big Star).
Steve Seim Jeff Porcoro put the groove into any rock, jazz, metal he could do anything 👍🏻
Good to see Steve Smith on there. I still have a drumstick he gave me in 1979 on the Evolution tour. Great drummer :-)
It was Ian Paice who first got me to pay attention to drummers in a band. If you want to see what a stellar guy he is, check out his reaction to a young 10 year old drummer named Yoyoka doing a cover of Deep Purple's, Burn. You'll enjoy both his reaction and her drumming.
Phil Ehart, Danny Seraphine and Steve Upton are great, too.
Ginger Baker on Levitation (Hawkwind) 👌👌
It's true
Cozy Powell, John Bonham, Neil Peart--absolutely.
Bill ward
Original Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr. Loved his playing on the Killers album. May he rest in peace.
I saw Clive Burr live in 1980 and 1981
Fantastic drummer
Killers is the best hard rock album from the 80 's in my opinion
Good God was Clive Burr good on those early IRON MAIDEN records. NOTB was probably the greatest record I've ever heard and I have a library of music in my head. Killers was a stunner as well, 2nd favorite Maiden record. Nicko McBrain ( his replacement ) was equally a stunning drummer and had one of the greatest drumming songs of all time: Where Eagles Dare.
Clive was an amazing drummer sadly missed
Exactly. Remarkably eccentric patterns. He deserved the success that was coming. Very amiable guy. Great loss for Maiden.
Bonham's drumming on fool in the rain is the best i've ever heard
Inspired by Bernard Purdie’s epic shuffle.
He's playing the purdie shuffle.
@@jackthomson5047 no I've learnt both of them, it's a little different
And the shuffle was here before Purdie. Purdie did his own version of it just like Bonham did.
I'll give a top ten...
1. Carl Palmer
2. Neil Peart
3. Mario Duplantier (of Gojira)
4. Vinny Appice
5. Nicko McBrain
6. Bill Ward
7. Phil Collins
8. Mick Fleetwood
9. Stewart Copeland
10. Buddy Rich
Glad u included Vinnie and Mick. Very underrated and overlooked!
One of the greatest drum albums ever - Pictures at Eleven by Robert Plant with Cozy Powell and Phil Collins!
I know what u mean, but it was the engineering/sound that was fantastic more than anything the drummers did. I like Cozy and Phil had his moments, but that sound on Pictures @ 11 is all studio engineering. Plant learned something watching Page/Bonham.
Top 20 of mine.
1 John Bonham
2 Keith Moon
3 Neal Peart
4 Ian Paice
5 Ginger Baker
6 Carmine Appice
7 Jim Keltner

13 Danny Serephine
14 Johnny Badanjek
15 Lee Kerslake

Add Ansley Dunbar after Carmine Appice.
1 Bonham
2 Peart
3 Powell
4 Brufford
5 Collins
6 Palmer
7 Paice
8 Mason
9 Ulrich
10 Menza
Dont forget Bill Ward of Black Sabbath, amazing
Ulrich??? bro
Austrian Painter Hiding From The Algorithm check out and Justice for All, amazing drumming
Phil Ehart, Roger Taylor,
I thought about the same ones ! Sad !
yes rodger taylor deserves to be in anyones top five.
Ehart is one of the all-time greats
Forgot the great Charlie Watts, solid as a rock !
Yes for sure!! Charlie has influenced so many drummers with his unique style. Top 10 for sure!!!
Don’t you mean solid as a Stone? 😉
No Doubt. Charlie sets the groove and like a quiet smooth sounding engine powers the car. I love watching the Monkey Man video, that's how you discipline a Snare Drum. Really neat fact is that he has a big hand on stage design and set up.
He is, but I just like the guys I mentioned more.
Charlie is a human metronome!
Bruford and Collins on Seconds Out. 2 of the best on stage at the same time.
1) Cozy Powell
2) Ian Paice
3) Carl Palmer
4) Tommy Aldridge
5) Mickey Dee
Mikkey,Tommy both FKN monsters!!
Exactly my top 5, I wish I could find Cozy's solo album in my LP pile, think I lost it when I moved to California.
@@TechGently Cozy had a couple solo lps.
Over the Top was him on a motorcycle jumping his drumkit.
Ian Paice first, otherwise good.
My top 10:
1) Neil Peart
2) Mike Portnoy
3) Bobby Jarzombek
4) Deen Castronovo
5) Tommy Aldridge
6) Mikkey Dee
7) Keith Moon
8) Mark Zonder
9) Shannon Larkin
10) Nicko McBrain
Honorable mention: Todd Sucherman
Right on with Jarzombek. Have you heard his recent playing on the Arch/Matheos and Fates albums? Mickey Dee and Zonder both amazing as well!
Jarzombek is an absolute BEAST. The first time I heard him play was on the Riot album Thundersteel.
Another awesome drummer is Ken Mary.
Great video. I think Mick Tucker deserves a mention, tremendous and terribly underrated drummer.
Also:
Brian Blade
Elvin Jones
mark guiliana
Max Roach
Jorge Rossy
Fun video I fully respect your choices
that's a who's who.... rock fans have no clue. Elvin Jones might be the heaviest drummer ever, different from Buddy Rich, but same level talent.
Brian Downey💚🍀😍
🍀
1 Bruford
2 Peart
3 Palmer
4 Bonham
5 Paice
Nice. You are a musician!
I love that you put Simon Phillips and Steve Smith on your list. I really love their playing with Hiromi - absolutely fantastic!
Always a pleasure watching Pete, appreciate your time and hard work!!💯🤘🏻🎸
Another one I forgot Cesar Zuiderwijk from Golden Earring, still rocking.
I give all drummers huge props. I have no talent for playing music and drums seem as difficult as any instrument.
R.I.P. Neil Peart - my #1 drummer of all time. A very sad loss to the music world
1. Carl Palmer
2. Bill Bruford
3. Barriemore Barlow
Buddy Rich
Billy Cobham, Narada Micheal Walden,
Also my top-3.
@@zeelias_zezito65 :-)
Yup, Barlow is a phenomenal drummer! His playing was simply awesome on Yngwie Malmsteen's first solo album.
Great list!
I want to mention one drummer that you probably like a lot : ELVIN JONES the legendary John Coltrane drummer.
Bill Ward's Accountable Beasts is sadly under-rated....I love it!
Moonspell67 - Could not agree w/you more if I tried. Just sayin’. ✌🏼
Interesting list. Some of my favourites,Buddy Miles,Les Binks,Ringo Starr,Don Brewer,Miles Copeland,Lee Kerslake. As you say too many to mention.A good rhythm section is the backbone of any band and a good/versatile drummer is key.
In no order my top 5:
1) John Bonham
2) Danny Carey
3) Bill Ward
4) Joey Jordinson
5) Dave Grohl (mainly because of In Utero, what an album)
Two drummers who don't often get a mention.
1. Michael Shrieve (ex. Santana) - driving power both at Woodstock and on the band's first seven albums
2.Paul Hammond (Atomic Rooster) - severely underrated drummer. He underpinned arguably the best work by Atomic Rooster (e.g. 'Death Walks Behind You' & 'In Hearing Of' albums)
Arthur Price totally agree with you Arthur. Paul Hammond is a killer for sure who hardly ever gets mentioned 🥁
Peart,Carey,Potney
Bonham and Carmine Appice
Another incredible and underrated talent deserves mention: original Santana drummer Michael Shrieve. I’m certain some of you remember that unbelievable solo he did on Soul Sacrifice From the Woodstock movie. Another worthy of mention who is not widely known for his drumming is Jan Hammer. Definitely something to be said for mastery of melody AND rhythm
Buddy Rich is the legend. He inspired drummers all over..
Along with Gene Krupa
Exactly. It's like naming all guitars players, but not Hendrix. All the drummers named were forged by Rich... But it's a great list. The guy has the right to not like Rich.
@@stephenbrown4211 Amen 🙏
Greatest drummer to ever walk planet earth.
NO ONE ELSE even close!!!
Saw him in concert , in '86 , for $ 5 ...
I believe Cozy was on the short list for Zeppelin, but in the end, they made the right decision for the band... RIP John & Cozy.
I was totally psyched back then when I heard those Cozy Powell rumors......there were also rumors of a combination of Zeppelin and YES members....YYZ.....there was no greater let down in rock and roll history than Led Zeppelin not only not continuing....but the unbelievable talent of Page and Plant completely disappearing overnight....the spell had been broken....it became painfully obvious of how it was over forever after we were subjected to absolutely hideous solo Plant...where he apparently had no voice....and the super lame and pathetic Firm....where apparently Page forgot how to play guitar....nothing they ever did even came close....Live Aid....No Quarter....further reminders....
@@larrynolletti4594 Unfortunately, the same applies with Rush... That wouldn't stop Alex & Geddy from doing new music, with, say, Gavin Harrison... That would be something to behold.
@@larrynolletti4594 They could do an Instrumental album, and it would rip!! I'd be first in line for that. I know, Dream on...
@@leddygee1896 yes...it would be....actually...whatever happened to the drummer on their first album....I know he didn't hold a candle to Neil.....but in the 70's I really did like that sound....there were a lot of kick ass Canadian bands back then....Triumph....April Wine....and one of my favorites....Moxy....the first 3 albums....got into them because Tommy Bolin played 6 solos on their first album....their guitarist was excellent...Earl Johnson...but apparently got into a fight with management and stormed out of the studio....Bolin filled in as a favor to the producer....
@@larrynolletti4594 I know all the bands of which you speak, but the other Canadian band that i really relate to is Max Webster. Kim Mitchell has a style all his own, and he's a huge fan of Zappa... And so am I.
Killer list.
Cozy Powell happens to be my most beloved drummer of all times. I miss him everyday.
Hi Pete, my fave is Jack de Johnette. Just listen to him on Miles' Cellar Door sessions - it's like one long drum concerto with Miles and Jarrett as accompanying musicians! Phil
the rock kids don't know de johnette, so he'd never show up in these silly polls, ANYWAY, Jack's a superman! I grew up a classic rock kid, but luckily a close family friend was a jazz fan and all he talked about was Buddy Rich, Art Blakey and Jack, oh, Louie Bellson too. He'd bring over those 33 records and I was blown away by the thunder - no/few vocals, yet the music was off the hook.
Great choices top to bottom. My top 10 choices would be:
Ian Paice
Neil Peart
JohnBonham
Cozy Powell
Mitch Mitchell
Ginger Baker
Keith Moon
Phil Collins
Clem Burke
Stewart Copeland
Here’s 10 greats that weren’t mentioned...

4. Pierre Moerlen
5. Jimmy Ayoub
6. Chris Slade
7. Bobby Chouinard
8. Jon Hiseman
9. Thom Mooney
10. Carl Canedy

marhill77 Brilliant call with Carl Canedy from the Rods. Stefan Kaufmann from Accept was very influential at that time as well.

I'm so glad you mentioned Mitch Mitchell. Like you said about drummers not always getting their due diligence and maybe being overshadowed, Mitch is one of those guys.
My top 5 : Ian Paice, Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio, Alex Van Halen, Dave Lombardo. As a drummer myself those are my main influences.

The two best songs with the best drumming is Slow&Easy and Don't Break My Heart Again from Whitesnake and the drummers are Cozy Powell &
Ian Paice
How about Burn which also features Ian Paice?
Cozy Powell * I stand up * what a legend, I love his works on Rainbow, Whitesnake and Brian May. It's a shame who passed away 20 years ago
Nice list, all great players!
Awesome list Pete, your best list yet, loved your honorable mentions: Hoglan, Lombardo, Gadd and Colaiuta, you more or less covered every genre.
Bobby Caldwell from Captain Beyond.
Rand Kelly
AND he wrote the music for that perfect first album!
I know about a great singer with that exact same name.
@@MrClassicmetal It s him. Same guy . He also played with Keith Relf ( Yardbirds singer) in a band called Armegeddon.
Great call on Bobby Caldwell. He played drums for Johnny Winter.
I believe he did some great playing on a Rick Derringer album, gez he sounded so good.
I love listening to this guy speak, he could make a list of top 10 best crayon colours and it would still be good viewing.
Turquiose nr. 1.
Excellent list. So many talented drummers. One of my favorite drummers that sometimes is easy to forget about is Roger Taylor from Queen. Full of energy!!
Great list, so thrilled to watch Paice that up.
One Cozy Powell album that rarely is mentioned are "Emerson Lake And Powell" from 1986. It doesn't really sound like classic Emerson, Lake and Palmer and is very 80's but also very catchy and powerful. I don't own the album but wouldn't hesitate a second to buy it if I did find it!
It’s a great album.
Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts the two most underrated drummers of all time without those two the Beatles and the Stones may not have been the rock legends that they are
My heart's top 10:
1. Ian Paice
2. Nicko McBrain
3. John Bonham
4. Neil Peart
5. Phil Collins
6. Simon Phillips
7. Chad Smith
8. Keith Moon
9.Tommy Clufetos
10. Eric Carr
Bill Ward definitely added a jazzy groove to Sabbath. His hi hat on war pigs is uniquely him. I also like the Appice brothers,Vinny’s work in Dio is great..and who hasn’t Carmine played with I love his drumming with Cactus.
Vinny has that swing Bill Ward's drumming has and the massive fills of Peart. Fabulous! I saw an early Dio performance recently and was blown away! And yes, Bill Ward also phenomenal, especially some of his early live recordings. So powerful but with that swing!
Great list! I would add Phil Ehart (Kansas), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), Nigel Olsson (Elton John), and Munetaka Higuchi (Lazy, Loudness).
AudiophileTubes
Munetaka Higuchi is immensely underrated, RIP to him
Great shout out for Phil Ehart! Vastly underrated drummer!
@@martinkulkarni3569 He truly is! Was listening to Kansas in my car this morning, whilst on route for my morning coffee and bagel. His fills and timing are uncanny... a great prog rock drummer.

Great list! and you're spot-on about Steve Smith's drum solos! They're so rhythmic, it's like he's playing a song all by himself!
Seen Def Leppard live in Halifax, was really cool to see Rick Allen do a drum solo with one arm. I know there’s more talented drummers but he will forever be one of my favourites
Great list Pete. Some of my favorites would include Lee "The Bear" Kerslake, who like Ward and Bonham is an immensely powerful drummer, Christian Vander of Magma, Elvin Jones, who of course played with Coltrane among many other projects, Thor Harris of Swans fame, the madman Jamie Muir, Chris Reifert of Death and Autopsy fame and Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine and Matching Mole before he became a paraplegic.
Hey Pete I was very impressed with your list . Before I started the video Simon Phillips came to my mind ,you got him .Also loved your jazz and fusion choices .When getting to the end Cozy Powell came to my mind and you got him .I am a drummer .This was amazing!!! We sure think alike!!

It seems odd to have a drummer list without Stewart Copeland.
It's not that I don't love his playing...just like the guys that I mentioned more. Can't mention everyone.
you could say the same about ANY LIST, cupcaked to baseball players - someone always gonna be left out/off.
I disagree about Stewart Copeland. Not that important. He plays on 3 instead of 2 and 4. All reggae drummers do that, anyway.
It seems a bit more odd to expect every drummer you enjoy to be on a list of ONLY 25 DRUMMERS, but to each his own.
Well I agree with the Stewart Copeland P.O.V but everything has a sting in the tail
Partial to Boston's Roy Haynes-played with Miles Davis, Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Coltrane, etc.
Moon's playing on "A Quiet One" on the Rolling Stone's Rock and Roll Circus dvd shows his incredible raw power, odd ingenuity and improvisation, and absolute joy and madness. The band's performance right there is why the Stones didn't release the dvd for almost 35 years. The Who blew them off the stage and they knew it.

I forgot about him. So good! An extreme metal drummer friend of mine always says Stuart & Phil Collins are his favorites, which is cool as heck to me.
Tony Lema yea. Copeland is one of my favorites. Unique time signatures and amazing ability on cymbals that you don’t hear from other players. Has his own sound😎
You are absolutely correct Tony, Stuart Copeland not being listed here and not even mentioned in the honorable mention sort of pissed me off.....He's definitely in my top 5 and may even be my number one...……..Amazing drummer...…..
Why would it piss you off? Aren’t we allowed to have our own favorites? Last I checked these were my favorites not yours. He’s a fine drummer but not among my top favorites.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Not really pissed off just misread Tony's reply, he was talking about someone giving his reply a thumbs down not your lists so maybe you could say i was a bit disappointed that you didn't have Copeland on your list but your taste are gonna be different than mine no problems with that....sorry if I riled you up a bit......I've just thought of another of my favorite drummers who's not on your list or has even been mentioned yet and that's Mick Tucker of The Sweet.....he may be my number one.....Very Underrated......
I just played with Ian Paice about a month ago. Just like you said, complete non rockstar attitude, super nice guy...and plays excellent at 71!!

2.Ian Paice
3.Dave Weckl
4.Marco Minnemann
5.Neal Peart
Great list Pete! We loved your thoughts on this. We loved that you mentioned Dennis Chambers, we were fortunate enough to see him perform with Victor Wooten a couple of years ago. A drummer I think people may overlook is Mike Mangini, the current drummer of Dream Theater-phenomenal! 🥁Thank you for sharing buddy.
