@@kevinsnodgrass6222 normally that would make sense. However I greatly prefer the Gabriel solo stuff to the overall output of Genesis. It’s just the way it hits me. I recognize and acknowledge the greatness of Genesis but I prefer Gabriel on his own.

Great seeing Martin choose Thin Lizzy as his favourite group. For me Philip Lynott was the coolest rock star ever to draw breath. I visited his grave at Howth, Dublin in 2021.

BOC doesn't quite crack my personal top 10, but -- they are definitely one of my favorites. A terrific band, with a DEEP catalog that goes way beyond the 2-3 radio hits that most people only know.
None of these crack my top 20. Neil Young and Crazy Horse would be in my top 10. @@kylez8010 they've been around a little over 20 years. If you like crossover thrash like D.R.I. and Animosity-era C.O.C. ,you might like them. Their themes usually venture around partying, horror and sci-fi. A great and fun band but tight and fast as fuck as well. They're really good musicians.

Genesis and Yes would be in my top 10 if they hadn't both completely lost the plot in their later years. Genesis were the first big band I saw live, but as they drifted into AOR territory they lost me completely as a fan. Yes produced some great songs in their later years, but so much dross as well :(
@@lightanddreamsphotography7140 Anyway i was always a great YES fan ....like other great bands Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Who, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Gentle Giant, Whitesnake, Uriah Heep etc...

Absolutely great podcast. I grew up on the Jam, the Stranglers and punk. The Jam's music just doesn't age. I've been listening to Paul Weller - modern classics a lot recently. One of the all time great songwriters.
Deep Purple, Rush, Dream Theater, Ten Years After, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Black Sabbath, Allman Brothers, Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd.
A big Fuck yes! For the Nazareth...another great band that could easily make a music playlist. One of my favorites! I think i could switch them out with any band on my top ten list. Favorite songs....morning dew(walk me out), this flight tonight, Vancouver Shakedown and definitely the entire Hair of the dog album. Cheers
I'm 54 years old. Was stuck in bed on my back with an injury two months ago. To get my mind off the pain, I binged on Popoff and Pardo. Had never listened to Sabbath in my life. Maybe I heard Iron Man at a party in high school. They are now easily in my top 5. It's been a great two months discovering them and now even searching for their LPs. You have good taste in music Curtis.
@@shizuokaBLUES That is awesome. Are you more into the 70's Sabbath or have you not made it all the way through the catalog yet? I personally like the Ozzy era the best.
@@Renegade8652 thanks, yes it is awesome considering I haven’t been charged up about a music group since the 90’s!! And having something fun and “light” to explore while injured and dealing with rehab and sleepless nights is very helpful! To answer your question, I’m the same as you-the 70’s are by the far the best with the Dio albums coming in a distant 2’d. listenable and rocking but can’t hold a candle to the best 4 of the first albums. I’m stunned I can find music this good again at my age! Many thanks to Pete and Martin. I’m guessing you haven’t seen them live with Ozzy, have you?
The Who, the Beatles. Yes, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix (Experience), King Crimson, and I have about eighteen candidates for the last three, but today let’s go with Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, and Jethro Tull.

I share the love for many of your choices! My list: 1. Iron Maiden: Unthreatened nr 1. Aside from their 90s albums, which I don't like that much, I consider them to have a flawless discography. 2. Judas Priest: Unthreatened nr 2. They have a handful of albums that aren't that strong (Nostradamus is NOT one of them!), but their importance to me is hard to deny and most of their albums are great! 3. Black Sabbath: They have always been a top 5 band for me, but the Tony Martin albums have helped them to take the 3rd place. 4. Rush: Rush have risen a lot for me in recent times. It's my go to if I'm need of some sophisticated, thoughtful music. 5. Dream Theater: The only band that have been able to threaten Maiden for the first place. I've calmed down to them in recent times though. Still adore them! 6. Genesis: Probably my favorite band if you only take the peak period into consideration. The 80s albums (Abacab onwards) lower them on the list. 7. Opeth: I'm hit or miss on their progressive rock albums, but their mid-period is unparalleled IMO. 8. AC/DC: Pure nostalgia. They have been a constant in my life and I always go to them if I'm in need of something fun and uplifting. 9. Pink Floyd: There is something magical about their peak period that few bands can match IMO. I can see them rise on the list, but Ummagumma and the post-Waters albums hold them back. 10. Metallica: Pure nostalgia. I can see them leave the list sooner or later, but the importance of their first 4 albums holds them on the list for me. I'm still young though, and I'm only in the initial phase of my musical journey. There are a lot of bands that I can see appear on the list with time. Some of these bands are Jethro Tull, Megadeth, Deep Purple, King Crimson, Thin Lizzy, Motörhead and Uriah Heep.

My top 10 favorites 10 … Aerosmith 9 … Ozzy Osbourne 8 … KISS 7 … Kix 6 … Scorpions 5 … Iron Maiden 4 … Led Zeppelin 3 … Van Halen 2 … Judas Priest 1 … AC/DC
Back in my high school days (in the 80’s) my top ten list was as follows: 1. The Sweet 2. Styx 3. Nazareth 4. Deep Purple 5. Aerosmith 6. Queen 7. Judas Priest 8. Iron Maiden 9. Black Sabbath 10. Scorpions Most of these bands remain because of sentimental reason (and because they’re awesome as well). But 40 years later I would ad bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Early Genesis, Helloween, Van Halen. Some of these bands I just came late to the party! Thanks to Sea of Tranquility for broadening my horizons.
1. Iron Maiden (by far my favourite) 2. Judas Priest 3. Motorhead 4. Slayer 5. Black Sabbath (the Dio line up is my personal favourite) 6. Metallica 7. Megadeth 8. Dio 9. Death 10. Cannibal Corpse
Great list. Sabbath and AC/DC are my top 2 too. I don't know which one is my absolute favorite, changes all the time so I have them both as 1. If Metallica could've continued a few more albums like their first 4 they'd share that top spot too. I still probably have them as 3(For me losing Cliff was gigantic). Ozzy Osbourne is another one like Metallica that if we got a couple more with Rhoads he'd probably be right up there.
I honestly dont get the appeal of AC/DC. I find the vocals annoying, dont like the guitar tone and most of their songs sound all the same to me. Im not trolling. I genuinely want to know what im missing. I do not like them and im yet to meet even 1 other rock fan that feels the way I do. Please fill me in.
Actually my list is in no particular order. I should have noted that. However I play guitar and when I started AC/DC were always there. Learning classic songs like Whole Lotta Rosie and Shoot to Thrill. Considered straight ahead and simple is what makes them. But like many I am a Bon Scott fan. Especially Highway to Hell, Powerage and Let There Be Rock.
I've always loved music and the emotion I would feel from it and I found AC/DC at a crucial period in my life that would shape my musical direction in the future. I remember being 12 years old when Thunderstruck came out. It was like someone shot me with 100cc's of pure adrenaline. I liked the other popular radio songs at the time like Enter Sandman, Teen Spirit etc..but nothing got me going like AC/DC. I love everything about them. It's hard to explain what it is since art is subjective but to me so many other bands don't hold a candle. Putting on Powerage and cranking Riff Raff, I don't get how someone could like rock music and not like it. They had fans from people that liked The Rolling Stones and other rock in that vein and they also have loads of fans that are into metal. They are accessible to a wide range of people. They are about the hardest form of rock you can be before being labeled metal. Back in the day when categorizing them, music magazine's that were more geared toward either rock or metal would still cover AC/DC a great deal. It's the purest form of hard unadulterated rock n roll. No wimpy ballads, both Brian and Bon have vocals that cut right through the storm of the instruments and are easy to understand, but what hits me the most is the swing and tightness of the drums, bass and guitar onslaught. I used to perform AC/DC live in the yard with my buddies using tennis rackets etc..I've must have watched the Live at Donnington VHS hundreds of times. I never thought all their songs sounded the same, I only started hearing that on the internet. Imo a ton of metal is way more repetitive. The guitars are clean but overdriven with a natural gain. I love Angus's playing and he has some of the best vibrato in rock. Can't say enough about the rhythm machine that is Malcolm. The first 15 years of AC/DC will always have a place in my heart. Made me pick up a guitar and favor Gibsons (Les Paul/SG's). Playing their riffs through a cranked Marshall Bluesbreaker always puts a smile on my face. I favor them over bands like Priest/Maiden and even Zeppelin. It's hard to pinpoint the reason I like them so much because I like the total package. It's the greatest storm of music I've ever heard. Their hits are popular and get played to death but their other deeper track are just as solid or better. The 12 minute live Let There Be Rock, Hell Aint A Bad Place To Be, the 14 minute Jailbreak at Donnington.. If the music wasn't good enough on its own, I finally see what the band was like on stage and was blown away. I didn't have mtv growing up so I was in the dark a lot about the appearance from many bands and when I saw them I saw nothing like them and still haven't. Sorry for the novel but I could keep going over a question such as what do I like about AC/DC. I love metal but AC/DC tops them all with their take on rock n roll. They are masters at it. The only other band for me that rivals them is 70's Sabbath with Ozzy.
Well said brother. No novel. It is what it is. We all like what we like. Pete didn't mention Ac/dc. Martin did. Yet he picked The Clash and The Jam. Ok. Whatever
This was a fantastic show! This is also an incredibly difficult assignment. My top 6 have been pretty set in stone over the years (with some internal movement). 7-10 is how I am feeling today...but it could all change. Here we go: 1. PINK FLOYD - the band that changed my life: part I. 2. RUSH - the band that changed my life: part 2. 3. BOSTON 4. THE ROLLING STONES 5. FLEETWOOD MAC 6. ZZ TOP 7. PORCUPINE TREE 8. TALKING HEADS 9. LED ZEPPELIN 10. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND The best of the rest (no order): Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, Camel, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Genesis, Heart, Iron Maiden, Kansas, Queen, Steely Dan, and Van Halen.
Just love the variety in everyone’s Top 10 and what makes us feel good and look up the differences in each other’s list. I can’t rank em! Top 10 bands that have sparked my musical odyssey of discovery and even re-appreciation after finding time. Top 10 in the order I discovered them. But I wish I’d have has all ten of these bands at my wedding! 1. Van Halen - 10 year old hearing their first album. That rush altered my DNA. 2. Zeppelin - hammer of the gods. Lore. 3. Doors - dangerous and led me John Lee Hooker 4. Janes Addiction - simply cleansed my 80’s hair band trap forever. 5. Dinosaur Jr - loudest shows ever. 6. Fu Manchu - Brant Bjork era drums post-Kyuss break up are so heavy and California cool that it took me back to early Sabbath catalog 7. Allman Brothers Band - sweetest dual leads that lead me to all dual guitar attacks - maiden, thin lizzy, 8. John Lee Hooker - true spirit of blues in rock. His 60s catalog is so brooding and deep 9. Rush - got back into vinyl two years ago. Read Martins books in the order I acquired their albums on vinyl. Just a special trip for me as a Canadian and relating to their immigrant experience and Neils travel books. Just love this band more than I ever did as a kid. 10. Miles Davis - from Tony Williams era on thru 75. Live or Studio. Mind. Blown. 11. Zappa - once I figured out Davis. Zappa from Hot Rats onward is genius. Paul Thanks for all the topics - just love early Nektar…. On and on….
Here’s my top 10…3 to 10 subject to change at a moments notice :) 1. The Rolling Stones (these guys have been my favorite since I was about 12, don’t think they can ever be unseated) 2. The Grateful Dead (my favorite American band, by far) 3. The Who (Pete Townshend is as good of a songwriter as anyone, ever) 4. Genesis (mostly the Gabriel Era, but I like a lot of the Phil lead stuff also…and a great, great live band all around) 5. Led Zeppelin (Can easily come in higher in my ranking, depends on the day….Jimmy Page my favorite hard rock guitar player of all time) 6. Yes (Saw them live the most of any band - along with maybe the Dead in all their various configurations - not a real big fan of their later albums but love, love, love the classics…including Drama !) 7. Black Sabbath (My favorite “heavy band”, but mostly the Ozzy period) 8. The Allman Brothers (2nd favorite American band, definitely my favorite Southern Rock band of all time) 9. The Beatles (I was always a little wary of them - due to them being almost unanimously chosen as the # 1 British Invasion Band to the Stones # 2 - so I came a little late to the party with them…but, hey: Can’t deny their enormous influence and staggering talent, so they really have to be on any classic rock music lovers top 10) 10. Jethro Tull (These guys moved way up in my ranking: Listened to them a lot when I was younger, forgot about them for a while but rediscovered their greatness very recently….Martin Barre is perhaps the most underrated guitarist in classic rock, and Ian Anderson is a phenomenal and prolific songwriter) Honorable mentions: Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain, ELP, Kiss….
@@gustafcederborg9744thanks :) They are a second tier band for me - along with the likes of Queen, Springsteen, and a few others that people seem to adore but I don’t get quite as much…But the first 2 albums Fleetwood Mac did with their “classic lineup” (Buckingham / Nicks) are 2 of the best ever, so I have to give them props for that alone. If anyone could move into the top tier of my list it would be a solo artist like Dylan or Elton John, but I stuck with the “Top 10 favorite bands” for this…And like I said, 3 thru 10 could change at a moments notice :)

3. Pink Floyd
4. Judas Priest
5. Soundgarden
6. Alice In Chains
7. Her's
8. Type O Negative
9. King Crimson
10. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
(I know Her's is gonna raise a few eyebrows... Just a really cool inde rock band, the greatest indie rock/pop band, for my money.)
And I chose to stick with 'bands'. If we're talking artists, Billy Joel has been one of my favourite artists since when I didn't have to bend over to get under tables.
My top 10 favourite bands, based on what I always go to when thinking of certain albums to listen to and/or present to others:
Status Quo
Queen
Genesis
Thin Lizzy
Rush
Dire Straits
AC/DC
Blue Oyster Cult
Pink Floyd
Uriah Heep
Quo tops my list, been a fan for nearly 50 years...
Here’s my 10 favorite bands of all time:
1) Killing Joke
2) Led Zeppelin
3) Black Sabbath
4) The Damned
5) Thin Lizzy
6) Motörhead
7) Cro Mags
8) Ramones
9) Pink Floyd
10) The Rolling Stones
I share the love for many of your choices! My list:
Good to see Martin hyping The Jam for a band that split up so young early 20’s they achieved so much …thanks for this Martin.

Most of these bands remain because of sentimental reason (and because they’re awesome as well). But 40 years later I would ad bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Early Genesis, Helloween, Van Halen. Some of these bands I just came late to the party! Thanks to Sea of Tranquility for broadening my horizons.

1. AC/DC 2. Black Sabbath 3. Judas Priest 4. Led Zeppelin 5. Van Halen 6. Rush 7. Yes 8. Blue Oyster Cult 9. Thin Lizzy. 10. Pink Floyd
Here we go:

Just love the variety in everyone’s Top 10 and what makes us feel good and look up the differences in each other’s list.
I can’t rank em! Top 10 bands that have sparked my musical odyssey of discovery and even re-appreciation after finding time. Top 10 in the order I discovered them.
But I wish I’d have has all ten of these bands at my wedding!
1. Van Halen - 10 year old hearing their first album. That rush altered my DNA.
2. Zeppelin - hammer of the gods. Lore.
3. Doors - dangerous and led me John Lee Hooker
4. Janes Addiction - simply cleansed my 80’s hair band trap forever.
5. Dinosaur Jr - loudest shows ever.
6. Fu Manchu - Brant Bjork era drums post-Kyuss break up are so heavy and California cool that it took me back to early Sabbath catalog
7. Allman Brothers Band - sweetest dual leads that lead me to all dual guitar attacks - maiden, thin lizzy,
8. John Lee Hooker - true spirit of blues in rock. His 60s catalog is so brooding and deep
On and on….
Here’s my top 10…3 to 10 subject to change at a moments notice :)
1. The Rolling Stones (these guys have been my favorite since I was about 12, don’t think they can ever be unseated)
2. The Grateful Dead (my favorite American band, by far)
3. The Who (Pete Townshend is as good of a songwriter as anyone, ever)
4. Genesis (mostly the Gabriel Era, but I like a lot of the Phil lead stuff also…and a great, great live band all around)
5. Led Zeppelin (Can easily come in higher in my ranking, depends on the day….Jimmy Page my favorite hard rock guitar player of all time)
6. Yes (Saw them live the most of any band - along with maybe the Dead in all their various configurations - not a real big fan of their later albums but love, love, love the classics…including Drama !)
7. Black Sabbath (My favorite “heavy band”, but mostly the Ozzy period)
8. The Allman Brothers (2nd favorite American band, definitely my favorite Southern Rock band of all time)
9. The Beatles (I was always a little wary of them - due to them being almost unanimously chosen as the # 1 British Invasion Band to the Stones # 2 - so I came a little late to the party with them…but, hey: Can’t deny their enormous influence and staggering talent, so they really have to be on any classic rock music lovers top 10)
10. Jethro Tull (These guys moved way up in my ranking: Listened to them a lot when I was younger, forgot about them for a while but rediscovered their greatness very recently….Martin Barre is perhaps the most underrated guitarist in classic rock, and Ian Anderson is a phenomenal and prolific songwriter)
Honorable mentions: Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain, ELP, Kiss….
great list curious where would u rank fleetwood mac in your discography?
