MOTO GUZZI V85TT 8000 mile REVIEW - Is it reliable - Is it worth Considering?

  • I have owned this V85 for just over 1 year now (purchased July 22). I have covered over 8000 miles in this time right through our British winter. I did coat the entire Bike in ACF-50 of which I can say amazing stuff. It was really hard for me who was normally a Sumer rider until I bought the TT to let the bike sit dirty over the winter so I didn't wear off the ACF coating.
I hope you like the review if you are considering a V85TT as your next bike. I certainly think it is a good alternative to the usual suspect that others buy in this 800cc segment..

For the indicator switch open it up and spray it with Super Servisol contact cleaner. Leave it for a few hours to fully dry out, then put it back together and it should work. When it evaporates, water leaves behind a residue that conducts with low currents so you end up with electronics not working. This should sort it and is much cheaper than a new switch block. Also check all connectors are pushed together properly as Guzzis shake a little.

Thank you for the review. I have '22 Centenario and really love the bike. I have not found the front headlights to be weak but also added the fog lights. Very happy with mine.

I guess it comes down to expectations. I remember my Old Saab 9-3 lights to be like candles in lights, where as my Golfs LED's active lights turn night into day. So when I saw that the V85 had LED's my expectation was they would be great. But I don't like that the Guzzi eagle DRL casts a dark spot in the middle of the road. The Riding lights fill this area. This is also the 1st bike I have owned in 35 yrs that I ride in winter. Summer sunset here is 11pm which means you don't really ride in the dark if you only ride in the summer. Winter sunset is 4pm, so thew guzzi gets used in the dark often.

Nice review. Is the indicator issue definitely due to the switch unit? Reason I ask is I had a Benelli that I took to Germany and for a miserable week it was in torrential rain. From that moment the indicators gradually stopped working. When i got home I checked the forum and it was a common issue. The indicator relays in that model were not waterproof and filled up with water. May be worth checking in the Guzzi club uk forum.

Helpful video mate, thanks for producing it. For a guy like yourself who (like myself), clearly does a lot of hard leaning it is strange that those tyres should square off so much. For what it is worth, I personally believe most people run their tyre pressures too high because the manual always errs on the side of caution (i.e. based on a 18 stone rider with a 16 stone wife and 50 lbs of luggage, but of course they cant say that because it is "fattest" or "overweight-phobic" or "luggage-phobic" something!) generally speaking I have found that lowering pressure a couple of pounds or more can solve that problem if I experience it. Of course it depends on the inherent rigidity of the tyre carcass etc so no given pressure is good across the board but you know where I am coming from. I once read an article on exactly how to discover what your tyre pressure should be based on your riding but I cant remember what it was called but the central point was that every rider is different and you should forget the manual and do your own experimentation. I do this and always find I am lowering pressure even though I am a quick rider and it not only reduces squaring considerably but also improves control and ride quality for a country back road scratcher like me.

    • @buckymoto1784
      @buckymoto1784  8 місяців тому +1

When I had chain bikes I religiously cleaned the chains every 600-800 miles. But when it comes to tyre pressures I'm a Lazy Bollox 🤣 But yea I tend to go with a few PSI under the norm also... They do have 8k on them which I thought wasn't too bad. Do you have a V85? or considering one if you don't..?

Fantastic review mate , good to see a detailed English review, I’m very interested in the upmap ? , I live in Australia and have a 2021 Centennio model , I’m up to 6000kms brought it new from a dealer 6 months ago . I haven’t done any performance mods as yet ( just an Australian made uni- Filter ) a form filter better for Australian dust conditions. And if you plan taking you bike off road at all . I sent my airbox and filter to them and are testing the first one in the world 🌍. It definitely breaths better I tested back to back . I am holding of on pipe mod at this stage as I don’t want to effect warranty. I had a problem with my EML coming on over 5500 RPM , apparently an issue with some 2021 models , like faulty valves ( some were recalled ) mine I think was a bug in the ecu and a recalibration of the sonic wheel , prior to resetting it valves had to b adjusted. Anyway hasn’t do it since so happy about that love the bike .
    Mods
    1. Screen deflector - buffering as you said
    2. GPS mount same as yours
    3. Givi tank ring for tank bag
    4. Sm- motech crash bars
    5. Have ordered the Sm- Motech pegs and don’t really like the standard ones
    6. Modified Benelli 1130’pannier racks to fit ( as I love the semi hard soft panniers that were on my 1130 .
    7. Round tube ( document holder ) can put tools etc in I put a “ snap Jack in it - means no Centerdtand , that only gets in way in corners 😂😂😂. Pelican case for a back box - cheaper than OEM panniers . I did a 5000 untube review on mine . My filing isn’t the best 😂😂😂.
Any way fantastic vid mate looking forward to more English stuff from you .
    Regards
    Paul from Australia

Thank you for your kind words. I enjoy showcasing my V85 as it isn't the go-to bike in this segment, and I always like the underdog in anything I buy. I also love showing our country off in a motorcyclist's light.. I have just purchased LOMO panniers and a 40ltr roll bag. I need to buy some Givi racks so I can modify them for a Lomo soft pannier bag set. This will be my winter project. I have the K&N filter, but I have heard that in dusty environments it lets grit through to the intakes. But Dust isn't something we are troubled with in Ireland and it's Rain LOL... I also loathe the centre stand, I am trying my best to avoid it.
      Future Mods:
      1. Pannier Racks for Lomo Soft Luggage
      2. Paint the Front Alternator cover and figure out a possible alloy bash plate extender. as I don't like the caponord fender mod
      3. Change tyres to Anakee Adventure
      4. ADV-style folding mirrors
      5. Looking at the Mosko Moto Tank bag for my Drone when out riding to get quick access

TBF, I think it was more down to the rear shock being too soft. I've not touched down the peg since screwing it up 1 notch and 2 notches when luggage is onboard. A lighter person won't have an issue, you will run out of tyre wall before you have issues imo. I'm 93kilo. Those tyres really do inspire confidence. Moto Guzzi seems to use the Dunlop or Anakee adventure tyre on the V85's. The Dunlop would be the more road orientated tyre of the 2. I've just watched it all back on the big TV and when i was talking about chicken strips the light grey mark around the tyre that's about 1" from the edge of the tyre is from be riding up a gravel road. If the tyres wer clean you'd see the lean has been right down to 10mm from the edge of the tyre and I've never felt they wer squirmy

I had the trailsmart max, which I liked, then trailmax meridians which were not as good in the wet. I have Metzler roadtec 01 on now and have got so much more confidence to lean into turns I've hit my boots off the road a couple of times and now ride with my feet turned in more. there's no hero blobs to give you an early warning. to be fair it's an adventure bike so I can't complain... at those angles it's right on the edge of the tyre anyway so as Bucky said, you'll run out of tyre before you run out of lean (assuming you don't have big feet like me lol)

I have a set of Michelin Anakee Adventure ordered to give them a try.. They are a little bit more gravel orientated that the Trail smarts..

Great review and you have made the bike better .
Just done exactly the same one year and just over 7k loved every mile and agree with your report.
I've been let down by bullshit dealership experience and servicing so she as gone. Valves never checked in 2 service visits us jobs not carried out but charged for. Then told my bike was making odd noise from transmission and they would need it for a "few" days. No courtesy bike just leave me without transport.
    Indicator switch is poor.
    Side stand switch came loose.
    Couple of fasteners needed tightening.
Exhaust guards will slice through fingers when cleaning.
    Sad too see it go.

I like to say it how it is without pro reviewer BS.. If it's crap I'll say it crap. I don't wear rose tinted glasses. But I still love the bike I also loved my Mk1 Multistrada and it's bag of spanners dry clutch. 🤣 I am drawn to quirky things in life..
Sorry you had a bad dealer experience. I had the same and as a result I rode 200 miles to get my 1st service done via a different dealer. My local one is 💩...

If you have not solved the problem of water in the switches, try removing the cluster, shake out any water and spray with WD40. I had the same problem on my Stelvio and rode home in a downpour with high and low beams on at the same time, it cured it completely and that was 9 years ago. I nearly bought a V85TT when my Stelvio engine seized due to an oil pump gear failure but opted to keep the Stelvio. I also had a height issue and the Stelvio is taller than the V85, my solution was to run the rear suspension about 4 clicks lower than recommended and slide the forks up through the yokes by about 15mm to lower the front end, it handles better than standard, feels a lot safer and I can get both feet flat on the ground.

Thanks for the information. I was able to get them working again using contact spray. I did try WD40, but it didn't work. They were completly dead.. Even the contact spray took a week of spraying and using the bike before they eventually went back to normal. And so far so good this winter they have stayed working.

I removed the rubber bumpers under the seat. Then I installed a -25mm MShock. I had a welder remove 2cm from the sidestand. Am 5' 8" and now I can flatfoot it. The handling is improved and also wheeling it out of the garage feels much easier. That top heavy feeling is gone. I really love the bike, even more than I had expected.
