I live near Boone. When i first moved here in the early 80s, my grandmother had a true crime magazine with this story in it. I drove drove past Mr. Durham's car dealership every day and it always gave me the shivers. As forensic science grew and advanced, i always thought it would make it possible to solve this case. Sad that it took a story from a family member of a perpetrator to find answers after the killers lived a full life after their crime, but at least the aurviving family had some sort of closure. It troubles me though that the person who ordered the hit was never brought to justice.
The word around town at the time was that Jennys family didnt approve of her choice of husband, wouldnt allow him in their home and refused to contribute financially to their daughters new life. She and Troy were living in a small trailer and he was apparently upset because he thought he had married into a "rich" family but wasnt reaping any rewards. Both he and Jenny were suspected at the time but there was no evidence to prove it, moved away shortly after the funerals and divorced just a few years later. I cant say they or Troy alone are responsible for ordering a hit on the family as these were just rumors, but this was widely believed by those who knew the family at the time according to friends of my grandparents who had lived in Boone when it happened. Its possible we'll never know 🤷♀️
@momtammy3563 The way the older people made it sound was that she got a little something but not nearly everything her folks were worth, like a small inheritance but not the house or car dealership. I don't remember them going into detail about that like I do the other stuff tho so I can't be 100% certain. Maybe there's public records somewhere?
Very familiar with this area but have never heard of this story. Thanks for sharing and never change a thing about your channel. I’ve been following almost since the beginning and it is one of the best.
Thanks for another interesting episode. What a tragedy this case is. With so much time having passed. It is most likely that the motive for the murders will never be known. RIP to the Durhams
I live close to Boone. My stepson went to App. State. I've been there so many times that it's not even fun anymore. When it snows it snows, no joking around. You best get where you're going or risk getting stuck or in a wreck regardless of what you're driving. And they get snow when the surrounding counties wont get a flake. Its just so cold up there in the winter. I hadn't heard about this crime until a few yrs ago. But they have plenty of crime going on up there now. No where is safe anymore. And that wasn't how it was a few yrs ago.
I've lived about 40 miles from Boone my whole life and can't believe I've never heard of this case. Granted it happened 2 years before i was born but you'd think I'd have run across it before now. Thanks for sharing their story ❤
I don't know how the son-in-law would have taken long enough, even though he had to get his neighbor, but only 4 miles away and the perpetrators still had time to tie up and drown his mother-in-law.
John E. Douglas wrote "If a crime scene has dead body and something to do with water it has to do with staging." I'm paraphrasing, but his point is if the killer leaves the dead body where water is involved it has to do with staging. So, in this case the killer knew the at least one of the victims.
Boone is indeed a lovely area here is North Carolina. My 2 oldest grandsons live and thrive there. I live in a not so snowy area of North Carolina that is also very lovely. But don't think of moving here, we aren't taking any new residents. Lol!
Okay, I feel like this channel is messing with my head. I swear I commented on this about 3 days ago, saying, "Didn't you cover this case already?" The response was no, but here we are again...déjà vu. I'm going to check my notifications because I am concerned my about my mental health now. Lol
The original video was uploaded 3 days ago, however we took it down after 2 hours for a quick re-edit, then it was re-uploaded :) And to clarify, we had not covered this case before!
You should redo it with the home invasion DNA conclusion...it would seem more accurate...imo it wasn't a hit these guys operated as a crew...a Crime of Opportunity during a blizzard
No one said "SUV" in 1972. 😉 The term had not been invented yet, although today we might describe a 1970s GMC Jimmy as an SUV. It certainly is a precursor to the SUVs we know today -- but in 1972, they would have just said truck or Jimmy (or maybe Blazer, a near-identical vehicle made under the Chevrolet badge).
UR SCOTTISH ACCENT IS AWESOME & HELPS ME WITH MY DEPRESSION, ANXIETY & 💤😴! I KNOW 🌏🌍🌎HAS WORSE PROBLEMS THAN MY ABUSE I DEAL WITH OVER 20 YRS NOW!!! THANKS ALEX, DARK CURIOSITIES & HER " FAITHFUL SUBSCRIBERS!!✊🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴
I am sending kind and caring thoughts to you. I know about trauma and anxiety. I was savagely attacked in 1999. I am pleased to say that with lots of help and guidance and love ( I didn't ho anywhere for years) and my faith. I pray the same for you. Love from South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️ ❤
I believe the son-in-law was involved for sure. I don't believe the mother called him asking for help, I believe the intruders made her call so he could pretend to be trying to get to their home. Why didn't he call police from the friends home that drove him to the house? Why all the delays? The way they were murdered was very personal, letting each one see the first one put face first in that tub knowing you turn is coming. I don't believe the small town police did a very good job investigating and I would love have an update on what happened to the son in law after the divorce.

This is one of the best crime channels in the world,I listen to many.

Unless it was that surviving member who was responsible for the hit. Isnt that what you do? Determine who benefited the most?
I could listen to your accent for hours, it's so soft and melodic! You could definitely have a career on a radio talk show!
I like the music, it gives atmosphere. Please don't change it
You always do a great job of finding and researching obscure and interesting cases that I don’t see anyone else covering.
I spent my first 25 years in this area and have somehow never heard of this case. Very interesting, thank you for sharing.
Please don't remove the background music in your videos! One of the things I absolutely love about your channel

Interesting. Would you happen to know if Jenny inherited?

@@codireed988 thank you for your response. It would probably only matter if there was a way to file charges, but that's not happening at this point.
This case was solved thru DNA
I bet he was in on it, and she may have been, too.
Very familiar with this area but have never heard of this story. Thanks for sharing and never change a thing about your channel. I’ve been following almost since the beginning and it is one of the best.
I'm glad that you got this one up: I could tell that something had gone wrong on Sunday, when it disappeared from my "Watch later" playlist.
Why did Virginia call her son-in-law, instead of the police?
Also why didn’t he call the police right away?
Whoever ordered the hit on them is more than likely never going to be caught knowing how long ago this crime occurred
4 inches of snow? That's just a dusting
Boone is on a mountain. In 1972, a lot of the roads were still dirt roads, very steep, twisted, narrow. Best to hunker down. 😆
Not for North Carolina lol
That makes me want to ask you if you live in Michigan lol
@@laurielyddy4890 Lol! Boone, NC and some parts of Michigan often have snowball fights.
Not in Tennessee
Did the Dixie mafia front or loan him money for the dealership?
Thanks for another interesting episode. What a tragedy this case is. With so much time having passed. It is most likely that the motive for the murders will never be known. RIP to the Durhams
Exactly what I needed to relax before bed! I always enjoy your videos! Thank you! 😊

My state of North Carolina.
This was tragic 😥
Stay safe out there everyone 🙏
Wilmington here! Ap-a-LACH-in State is the way we pronounce it.
NE NC here. Have friends in Boone.
@@shadykatie100I believe this was meant for the narrator. 😉
@@avnrulz8587 I wanted to see how everyone else pronounced it too who were from North Carolina.
NC state police as well as local police are extremely corrupt and 'on the take.' I avoid North Carolina at all costs.

So very sad for the victims who never got justice thank you DC 👏👏👏👏
Excellent Presentation as Usual😉👋
They were not known to have any known enemies that doesn't mean that they didn't have energy though i mean someone clearly targeted them
❤❤❤❤❤Love your videos

I was wondering what happened to this video it just seemed to have disappeared
me too. i started watching it the other day, had to stop and when i came back it was gone🤔🤔
My gut feeling is Jenny's husband.

Wow I was 12 at the time and live about 1hr Away in east Tn ! And never have heard about this one ! Thanks. : ((((
We lived down the hill from the Durhams, I remember this happening very well even tho I was only a small child..
Damn, this is my neck of the woods.
😭💔
Who get the house and money after their death......
Boone has a Baked Bean Festival😮
And a wooleyworm festival. 🐱
Sounds like my kind of town
They all look very old as for their ages.
These were some true blue gangsters. Never revealing who hired them. Respect
So much for CODIS and NDIS technology, unless of course the evidence was never entered into the system...

There were no such in 1972..there where station wagons
Not long after though. The 1974 Jeep Cherokee was called a "sports utility vehicle" in advertisements.
Jimmy 4×4 production started 1970
This case was solved by DNA

👎👎👎
This story scared me😢. The Dixie mafia is still alive and well.
The daughter "sued Durham?" This doesn't make any sense.
Their daughter's full name is Ginny Sue Durham.
😢😢😢😢😢I don't need the blah, blah blah about the towns and areas. Just get on with the story.
Yeah that AI generated, tourism blurb is thoroughly irritating.
Some of us like a bit of context. For those of you who don’t, just zip ahead a bit. Dark Curiosities is practically perfect in every way. 😎♥️
