Ep5. Install Glass Window In Fish Pond

  • This is the only time I felt very nervous in the entire backyard garden pond series. I have never installed a glass window prior to this and I am very excited that glass window is installed in the pond without any leakages. Before installing the glass window, I built a small frame on the inside of the pond where pond glass can fit. I covered the entire inside of fish pond with underlay and liner and pre-cut the liner where glass window would sit. This is something not many do but I thought to give it a go and it has been a successful pond window installation.
    Pond glass cost me quite a lot, it is 25.5mm toughen and laminated glass with polish edges. Dims are 142cm in length and 62cm in height. I have used idealseal MS290 as a pond sealant and used 2 tubes in total. I was very confident with my initial bead on the inside but later on found out that it wasn't enough. I filled remaining areas from the outside without making any mess. Window shims were used to lift the glass slightly off the frame and area was filled with silicone. If you want to learn in detail how to install glass window in a fish pond then read my article here www.fishaholic...
    Black paint around the glass frame, black silicone, black liner blends in really well. I decided to paint the top and 8 corner legs of fish pond black too. Let me know what do you think about this backyard garden pond and how good the glass looks at the front. I have some other landscape ideas which I will add to this series as I still have to build a filter for this pond and choose fish that could go in this pond. Let me know in the comment section your favorite pond fish.
    This is not the best garden pond in the backyard but I have put in quite a lot of hours and energy into building this pond. I really hope you will enjoy this video and might inspire some of you to build your own above ground fish pond. Please let me know your views in the comment section below and share this video if you find it useful and informative.
    Thank You

    This is great info. I am planning on making all my own larger indoor tanks with this style. I have been very nervously trying to find a way that is tested and that will actually show me the products used so thank you.

    How do you install the liner?
    Do you glue it together in the corners as to not have any folds?

    Hi looking to do a similar job in the UK. Did you just over lap the liner into the window frame then glue/seal the window into the opening then fully seal the back edges?

    • @Fishaholic
      @Fishaholic  Рік тому

      Thats right, glass is sealed to the glass and all the gaps between glass and window frame filled with the sealant.

    I just bought a giant second-hand fish tank instead and built a wooden frame around it but thats a still a good demonstration how its meant to be done.

    I am following your videos to build my pond in fl . Is it possible to get a little more info on installing the window. Im watching the vids and thats the only part that needs clarification for me.. after the underlayment n the pond liner is put in , do u stick the pond liner to the edges of the window frame before placing the window? Do u hold the window in place after u apply the silicone?

    • @Fishaholic
      @Fishaholic  6 місяців тому

      Hello, yes I stuck the pond liner to the frame so it doesn't move. Only minimal silicone was used at the corners.
      Apply applying silicone and placing the glass. I have used a piece of timber to hold the glass from falling back. Glass was placed in the window frame I have created.

      Hello, Glass is 25mm toughen and laminated. Cost me AUD 784 at that time. Bought it locally in Melbourne. I don't exactly remember the company. Did a good search and found a few suppliers, and I just picked one with a cheaper quote.

    • @Fishaholic

      Hi mate, it would have costed me somewhere between 4-5 grand. Expensive part of this build was glass and pond liner. Timber prices have gone up in AU and would have costed me around 1 grand. I did overkill it though. Thank you for your feedback

    This pond is so amazing! I've just been to B & Q in the UK to start ours tomorrow morning! Quick question if you don't mind... What is the purpose of the insulation inbetween the MDF and the cladding? It doesn't get too hot or too cold in the UK really so not sure if I would require it. Unless it aids with the moisture control? Thanks! :)

    • @Fishaholic

      Hi mate, its my first pond build so can't say anything based on experience. But added styrofoam so reduce heat transfer which inturns will reduce moisture transfer. Hope it make sense

    Why would you put the ridge side of the decking timber facing out?
    If you were going to use corner pieces as trim, you should have cut the horizontal pieces shorter instead of screwing the corner trim on top of it and having it stick out.
    The corners could have also been ripped down on a 45° angle to make a decent looking finish instead of just butting them together.
    Also there are plenty of cheap silicone finishing tools out there to use instead of a pencil.
